Quomodo sedet sola civitas plena populo!ALEPH. O how a city once filled with people now sits alone!Facta est quasi vidua domina gentium; The Governess of the Gentiles has become like a widow.princeps provinciarum facta est sub tributo. The Prince of the provinces has been placed under tribute.

Plorans ploravit in nocte,BETH. Weeping, she has wept through the night,et lacrimæ ejus in maxillis ejus:and her tears are on her cheeks.non est qui consoletur eam ex omnibus caris ejus; There is no one to be a comfort to her and to all her beloved.omnes amici ejus spreverunt eam,All her friends have spurned her,et facti sunt ei inimici.and they have become her enemies.

Migravit Judas propter afflictionem,GHIMEL.et multitudinem servitutis;Judah has migrated because of affliction and great servitude.habitavit inter gentes,She has lived among the nations and not found rest.nec invenit requiem:All of her persecutors have apprehended her, omnes persecutores ejus apprehenderunt eam inter angustias.amid torments.

Viæ Sion lugent,DALETH. The pathways of Zion mourn,eo quod non sint qui veniant ad solemnitatem:because there are none who approach for the solemnity.omnes portæ ejus destructæ,All her gates are destroyed.sacerdotes ejus gementes; Her priests groan.virgines ejus squalidæ,Her virgins are filthy.et ipsa oppressa amaritudine. And she is overwhelmed with bitterness.

Facti sunt hostes ejus in capite;HE. Her enemies have been made her leaders;inimici ejus locupletati sunt:her adversaries have been enriched.quia Dominus locutus est super eam propter multitudinem iniquitatum ejus. For the Lord has spoken against her, because of the multitude of her iniquities.Parvuli ejus ducti sunt in captivitatem ante faciem tribulantis. Her little ones have been led into captivity before the face of the tribulator.

Et egressus est a filia Sion omnis decor ejus;VAU. And all her elegance has departed, from the daughter of Zion.facti sunt principes ejus velut arietes non invenientes pascua,Her leaders have become like rams that cannot find pasture,et abierunt absque fortitudine ante faciem subsequentis.and they have gone away without strength before the face of the pursuer.

Recordata est Jerusalem dierum afflictionis suæ,ZAIN.et prævaricationis,Jerusalem has remembered the days of her afflictionomnium desiderabilium suorum, and the betrayal of all her desirable ones,quæ habuerat a diebus antiquis, whom she held from the days of antiquity, cum caderet populus ejus in manu hostili, when her people fell into the hand of the enemy,et non esset auxiliator:and there was no one to be a helper.viderunt eam hostes,The enemies have looked upon heret deriserunt sabbata ejus.and mocked her Sabbaths.

Peccatum peccavit Jerusalem,HETH. Jerusalem has sinned a grievous sinz.propterea instabilis facta est;Because of this, she has become unstable.omnes qui glorificabant eam spreverunt illam, quia viderunt ignominiam ejus:All who glorified her have spurned her, because they have looked upon her disgrace.ipsa autem gemens conversa est retrorsum. Then she groaned and turned away again.

Sordes ejus in pedibus ejus,TETH.nec recordata est finis sui;Her filth is on her feet, deposita est vehementer, and her end has not been remembered.non habens consolatorem. She has been vehemently put down,Vide, having no consolation.Domine,O Lord, afflictionem meam, look upon my affliction, quoniam erectus est inimicus.for the adversary has been lifted up.

Manum suam misit hostis ad omnia desiderabilia ejus,JOD. The enemy has sent his hand against all her desirable ones.quia vidit gentes ingressas sanctuarium suum,For she has watched the Gentiles enter her sanctuary,de quibus præceperas ne intrarent in ecclesiam tuam.even though you instructed that they should not enter into your church.

Omnis populus ejus gemens, et quærens panem;CAPH. All her people are groaning and seeking bread.dederunt pretiosa quæque pro cibo ad refocillandam animam. Vide,They have given up whatever was precious in exchange for food, so as to remain alive.Domine,See, O Lord,et considera quoniam facta sum vilis!and consider, for I have become vile.

O vos omnes qui transitis per viam,LAMED.attendite,O all you who pass by the way,et videte si est dolor sicut dolor meus!attend, quoniam vindemiavit me,and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow.ut locutus est Dominus,For he has made me a vintage,in die iræ furoris sui.just as the Lord has spoken in the day of his furious anger.

De excelso misit ignem in ossibus meis,MEM. From on high, he has sent fire into my bones,et erudivit me:and he has educated me.expandit rete pedibus meis,He has spread a net for my feet;convertit me retrorsum; posuit me desolatam,he has turned me back. He has placed me in desolation, tota die mœrore confectam.consumed by grief, all day long.

Vigilavit jugum iniquitatum mearum;NUN. Vigilant is the yoke of my iniquities.in manu ejus convolutæ sunt, et impositæ collo meo. They have been folded together in his hand and imposed on my neck.Infirmata est virtus mea:My virtue has been weakened.dedit me Dominus in manu de qua non potero surgere. The Lord has given me into a hand, out of which I am not able to rise.

Abstulit omnes magnificos meos Dominus de medio mei;SAMECH. The Lord has taken away all of my great ones from my midst.vocavit adversum me tempus ut contereret electos meos.He has called forth time against me, so as to crush my elect ones.Torcular calcavit Dominus virgini filiæ Juda. The Lord has trampled the winepress, which was for the virgin daughter of Judah.

Idcirco ego plorans,AIN. For this I weep,et oculus meus deducens aquas, and my eyes bring forth water.quia longe factus est a me consolator, convertens animam meam. For the consoler has been far away from me, changing my soul.Facti sunt filii mei perditi,My sons have become lost, quoniam invaluit inimicus.because the enemy has prevailed.

Expandit Sion manus suas;PHE. Zion has reached out her hands;non est qui consoletur eam.there is no one to console her.Mandavit Dominus adversum Jacob in circuitu ejus hostes ejus; The Lord has given orders against Jacob; his enemies are all around him.facta est Jerusalem quasi polluta menstruis inter eos.Jerusalem among them is like a woman made unclean by menstruation.

Justus est Dominus,SADE.quia os ejus ad iracundiam provocavi. The Lord is just,Audite, for it is I who has provoked his mouth to wrath.obsecro,I beg all people to listenuniversi populi, and to see my sorrow.et videte dolorem meum:My virginsvirgines meæ et juvenes mei abierunt in captivitatem.and my youths have gone into captivity.

Vocavi amicos meos,COPH. I called for my friends,et ipsi deceperunt me;but they deceived me.sacerdotes mei et senes mei in urbe consumpti sunt,My priests and my elders have been consumed in the city.quia quæsierunt cibum sibi ut refocillarent animam suam. For they were seeking their food, so as to revive their life.

Vide,RES. See,Domine,O Lord, quoniam tribulor:that I am in tribulation.conturbatus est venter meus,My bowels have been disturbed, subversum est cor meum in memetipsa,my heart has been subverted within me,quoniam amaritudine plena sum.for I am filled with bitterness.Foris interfecit gladius,Outside, the sword puts to death,et domi mors similis est.and at home there is a similar death.

Audierunt quia ingemisco ego,SIN.et non est qui consoletur me;They have heard that I groan and that there is no one to console me.omnes inimici mei audierunt malum meum,All my enemies have heard of my misfortune;lætati sunt quoniam tu fecisti:they have rejoiced that you caused it.adduxisti diem consolationis,You have brought in a day of consolation,et fient similes mei.and so they shall become like me.

Ingrediatur omne malum eorum coram te:THAU. Let all their evil enter before you.et vindemia eos,And make vintage of them, sicut vindemiasti me propter omnes iniquitates meas:just as you made vintage of me, because of all my iniquities.multi enim gemitus mei,For my sighs are many,et cor meum mœrens.and my heart is grieving.
