Quomodo obtexit caligine in furore suo Dominus filiam Sion;ALEPH. O how the Lord has covered the daughter of Zion with gloom in his fury!projecit de cælo in terram inclytam Israël, et non est recordatus scabelli pedum suorum in die furoris sui!O how he has thrown down from heaven to earth the famous one of Israel, and he has not remembered his footstool in the day of his fury.
Præcipitavit Dominus,BETH. The Lord has cast down, nec pepercit omnia speciosa Jacob:and he has not been lenient, with all the beauties of Jacob.destruxit in furore suo munitiones virginis Juda,In his fury, he has destroyed the fortifications of the virgin of Judah,et dejecit in terram; polluit regnum et principes ejus.and he has thrown them down to the ground. He has polluted the kingdom and its leaders.
Confregit in ira furoris sui omne cornu Israël;GHIMEL. In the anger of his fury, he has broken the entire horn of Israel.avertit retrorsum dexteram suam a facie inimici,He has drawn back his right hand before the face of the enemy.et succendit in Jacob quasi ignem flammæ devorantis in gyro. And he has kindled within Jacob a flaming fire, devouring all around.
Tetendit arcum suum quasi inimicus,DALETH. He has bent his bow like an enemy.firmavit dexteram suam quasi hostis,He has fixed his right hand like an adversary.et occidit omne quod pulchrum erat visu in tabernaculo filiæ Sion; And he has cut down all that was beautiful to behold in the tabernacle of the daughter of Zion.effudit quasi ignem indignationem suam.He has poured out his indignation like fire.
Factus est Dominus velut inimicus,HE.præcipitavit Israël:The Lord has become like an enemy.præcipitavit omnia mœnia ejus,He has thrown down Israel.dissipavit munitiones ejus,He has thrown down all of his defenses.et replevit in filia Juda humiliatumHe has torn apart his fortifications.et humiliatam. And he has filled the daughter of Judah with humbled men and humbled women.
Et dissipavit quasi hortum tentorium suum;VAU. And he has torn apart her tent like a garden.demolitus est tabernaculum suum.He has demolished her tabernacle.Oblivioni tradidit Dominus in Sion festivitatem et sabbatum; et in opprobrium,In Zion, the Lord has delivered feast and Sabbath into oblivion,et in indignationem furoris sui,and king and priest into disgrace, regem et sacerdotem.and into the indignation of his fury.
Repulit Dominus altare suum;ZAIN. The Lord has pushed away his own altar.maledixit sanctificationi suæ:He has cursed his own sanctuary.tradidit in manu inimici muros turrium ejus.He has delivered the walls of its towers into the hand of the enemy.Vocem dederunt in domo Domini sicut in die solemni. They have made a noise in the house of the Lord, as if on the day of a solemnity.
Cogitavit Dominus dissipare murum filiæ Sion;HETH. The Lord has decided to tear down the wall of the daughter of Zion.tetendit funiculum suum,He has stretched out his measuring line,et non avertit manum suam a perditione:and he has not turned away his hand from perdition.luxitque antemurale,And the rampart has mourned,et murus pariter dissipatus est.and with the wall it has been torn apart.
Defixæ sunt in terra portæ ejus,TETH. Her gates have been buried in the ground.perdidit et contrivit vectes ejus;He has ruined and crushed its bars.regem ejus et principes ejus in gentibus:Her king and her princes are with the Gentiles.non est lex,There is no law,et prophetæ ejus non invenerunt visionem a Domino.and her prophets have found no vision from the Lord.
Sederunt in terra, conticuerunt senes filiæ Sion;JOD. The elders of the daughter of Zion have become idle;consperserunt cinere capita sua, they sit on the ground. They have sprinkled their heads with ashes.accincti sunt ciliciis:They have been wrapped with haircloth.abjecerunt in terram capita sua virgines Jerusalem. The virgins of Jerusalem have cast their heads down to the ground.
Defecerunt præ lacrimis oculi mei,CAPH. My eyes have exhausted their tears.conturbata sunt viscera mea;My internal organs have become disturbed.effusum est in terra jecur meum super contritione filiæ populi mei,My liver has been poured out on the earth, over the grief of the daughter of my people, cum deficeret parvulus et lactens in plateis oppidi.when the little ones and the infants passed away in the streets of the town.
Matribus suis dixerunt:LAMED.Ubi est triticumThey said to their mothers,et vinum?“Where is the wheat and the wine?”cum deficerent quasi vulnerati in plateis civitatis, when they fell like the wounded in the streets of the city, cum exhalarent animas suas in sinu matrum suarum.when they breathed out their lives into the bosoms of their mothers.
Cui comparabo te,MEM.vel cui assimilabo te,To what shall I compare you, filia Jerusalem?or to what shall I liken you,cui exæquabo te,O daughter of Jerusalem?et consolabor te,To what shall I equate you, virgo,so as to console you, filia Sion?O virgin daughter of Zion?magna est enim velut mare contritio tua:For your destruction is as great as the sea.quis medebitur tui?Who will cure you?
Prophetæ tui viderunt tibi falsa et stulta;NUN.nec aperiebant iniquitatem tuam,Your prophets have seen false and foolish things for you.ut te ad pœnitentiam provocarent; And they have not laid open your iniquity, viderunt autem tibi assumptiones falsas,so as to provoke you to repentance.et ejectiones.Yet they have seen for you false revelations and banishments.
Plauserunt super te manibus omnes transeuntes per viam;SAMECH.sibilaverunt et moverunt caput suum super filiam Jerusalem:All those who passed by the way have clapped their hands over you.Hæccine est urbs,They have hissed and shook their heads over the daughter of Jerusalem, dicentes, saying, perfecti decoris,“Is this the city of perfect dignity, gaudium universæ terræ?the joy of all the earth?”
Aperuerunt super te os suum omnes inimici tui:PHE. All your enemies have opened their mouth over you.sibilaverunt, et fremuerunt dentibus,They have hissed and gnashed their teeth,et dixerunt:and they said:Devorabimus:“We will devour her.en ista est dies quam exspectabamus;Yes, this is the day we waited for. We have found it,invenimus, vidimus.we have seen it.”
Fecit Dominus quæ cogitavit;AIN. The Lord has done what he decided to do.complevit sermonem suum,He has fulfilled his word, quem præceperat a diebus antiquis:which he instructed since the days of antiquity.destruxit,He has destroyed,et non pepercit, and he has not been lenient,et lætificavit super te inimicum, and he has caused the enemy to rejoice over you,et exaltavit cornu hostium tuorum.and he has exalted the horn of your adversaries.
Clamavit cor eorum ad Dominum super muros filiæ Sion:SADE.Deduc quasi torrentem lacrimas per diemTheir heart cried out to the Lord from the walls of the daughter of Zion.et noctem;Let tears run down like a torrent throughout the day and the night.non des requiem tibi,Do not give rest to yourself, neque taceat pupilla oculi tui.and do not allow the pupil of your eye to cease.
Consurge,COPH. Rise up.lauda in nocte,Give praise in the night,in principio vigiliarum;in the first of the watches.effunde sicut aquam cor tuum ante conspectum Domini:Pour out your heart like water before the sight of the Lord.leva ad eum manus tuas pro anima parvulorum tuorum,Lift up your hands to him on behalf of the souls of your little ones, qui defecerunt in fame in capite omnium compitorum.who have passed away from famine at the head of all the crossroads.
Vide,RES.Domine,O Lord,et considera quem vindemiaveris ita.see and consider those whom you have made into such a vintage.Ergone comedent mulieres fructum suum,So then, parvulos ad mensuram palmæ?shall women eat their own fruit,si occiditur in sanctuario Domini sacerdoslittle ones measured by the palm of the hand?et propheta?Shall priest and prophet be killed in the sanctuary of the Lord?
Jacuerunt in terra foris puer et senex;SIN. The boy and the old man lie down on the ground outside.virgines meæ et juvenes mei ceciderunt in gladio:My virgins and my youths have fallen by the sword.interfecisti in die furoris tui,You have slain them in the day of your fury.percussisti,You have struck down, nec misertus es.and you have not shown pity.
Vocasti quasi ad diem solemnem,THAU. You have called, as if to a day of solemnity, qui terrerent me de circuitu;those who would terrify me all around.et non fuit in die furoris Domini qui effugeret,And there was no one, in the day of the fury of the Lord,et relinqueretur:who escaped or was left behind.quos educavi et enutrivi, inimicus meus consumpsit eos. Those whom I educated and nourished, my enemy has consumed.
