Post hæc autem designavit DominusThen,et alios septuaginta duos:after these things,et misit illos binos ante faciem suam in omnem civitatemthe Lord also designated another seventy-two.et locum,And he sent them in pairs before his face, quo erat ipse venturus.into every city and place where he was to arrive.
Et dicebat illis:And he said to them:Messis quidem multa,“Certainly the harvest is great, operarii autem pauci.but the workers are few.Rogate ergo dominum messis ut mittat operarios in messem suam. Therefore, ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers into his harvest.
Ite:Go forth.ecce ego mitto vos sicut agnos inter lupos.Behold, I send you out like lambs among wolves.
Nolite portare sacculum,Do not choose to carry a purse, neque peram, nor provisions, neque calceamenta, nor shoes;et neminem per viam salutaveritis.and you shall greet no one along the way.
In quamcumque domum intraveritis,Into whatever house you will have entered, primum dicite:first say,Pax huic domui:‘Peace to this house.’
et si ibi fuerit filius pacis,And if a son of peace is there, requiescet super illum pax vestra:your peace will rest upon him.sin autem,But if not,ad vos revertetur.it will return to you.
In eadem autem domo manete,And remain in the same house, edentes et bibentes quæ apud illos sunt:eating and drinking the things that are with them.dignus est enim operarius mercede sua.For the worker is worthy of his pay.Nolite transire de domo in domum.Do not choose to pass from house to house.
Et in quamcumque civitatem intraveritis,And into whatever city you have enteredet susceperint vos,and they have received you, manducate quæ apponuntur vobis:eat what they set before you.
et curate infirmos, qui in illa sunt,And cure the sick who are in that place,et dicite illis:and proclaim to them,Appropinquavit in vos regnum Dei.‘The kingdom of God has drawn near to you.’
In quamcumque autem civitatem intraveritis,But into whatever city you have enteredet non susceperint vos,and they have not received you, exeuntes in plateas ejus, going out into its main streets, dicite:say:
Etiam pulverem, qui adhæsit nobis de civitate vestra,‘Even the dust which clings to us from your city, extergimus in vos: tamen hoc scitote,we wipe away against you. Yet know this:quia appropinquavit regnum Dei.the kingdom of God has drawn near.’
Dico vobis,I say to you, quia Sodomis in die illa remissius erit, that in that day, quam illi civitati.Sodom will be forgiven more than that city will be.
Væ tibi Corozain!Woe to you, Chorazin!væ tibi Bethsaida!Woe to you, Bethsaida!quia si in Tyro et Sidone factæ fuissent virtutes quæ factæ sunt in vobis,For if the miracles that have been wrought in you, had been wrought in Tyre and Sidon, olim in cilicio et cinere sedentes pœniterent.they would have repented long ago, sitting in haircloth and ashes.
Verumtamen Tyro et Sidoni remissius erit in judicio,Yet truly, quam vobis.Tyre and Sidon will be forgiven more in the judgment than you will be.
Et tu Capharnaum,And as for you, Capernaum, usque ad cælum exaltata, who would be exalted even up to Heaven:usque ad infernum demergeris.you shall be submerged into Hell.
Qui vos audit,Whoever hears you,me audit:hears me.et qui vos spernit,And whoever despises you,me spernit.despises me.Qui autem me spernit,And whoever despises me,spernit eum qui misit me.despises him who sent me.”
Reversi sunt autem septuaginta duo cum gaudio,Then the seventy-two returned with gladness, dicentes:saying,Domine,“Lord, etiam dæmonia subjiciuntur nobis in nomine tuo.even the demons are subject to us, in your name.”
Et ait illis:And he said to them:Videbam Satanam sicut fulgor de cælo cadentem.“I was watching as Satan fell like lightning from heaven.
Ecce dedi vobis potestatem calcandi supra serpentes,Behold,et scorpiones,I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions,et super omnem virtutem inimici:and upon all the powers of the enemy,et nihil vobis nocebit.and nothing shall hurt you.
Verumtamen in hoc nolite gaudere quia spiritus vobis subjiciuntur:Yet truly, do not choose to rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you;gaudete autem, quod nomina vestra scripta sunt in cælis.but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
In ipsa hora exsultavit Spiritu Sancto,In the same hour, he exulted in the Holy Spirit,et dixit:and he said:Confiteor tibi Pater,“I confess to you, Father,Domine cæli et terræ,Lord of heaven and earth, quod abscondisti hæc a sapientibus et prudentibus, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the prudent,et revelasti ea parvulis.and have revealed them to little ones.Etiam Pater:It is so, Father, quoniam sic placuit ante te.because this way was pleasing before you.
Omnia mihi tradita sunt a Patre meo.All things have been delivered to me by my Father.Et nemo scit quis sit Filius,And no one knows who the Son is,nisi Pater:except the Father,et quis sit Pater, and who the Father is,nisi Filius, except the Son,et cui voluerit Filius revelare.and those to whom the Son has chosen to reveal him.”
Et conversus ad discipulos suos,And turning to his disciples, dixit:he said:Beati oculi qui vident quæ vos videtis.“Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.
Dico enim vobis quod multi prophetæFor I say to you,et reges voluerunt videre quæ vos videtis, that many prophets and kings wanted to see the things that you see,et non viderunt:and they did not see them,et audire quæ auditis, and to hear the things that you hear,et non audierunt.and they did not hear them.”
Et ecce quidam legisperitus surrexit tentans illum,And behold, a certain expert in the law rose up,et dicens: Magister, testing him and saying, quid faciendo vitam æternam possidebo?“Teacher, what must I do to possess eternal life?”
At ille dixit ad eum:But he said to him:In lege quid scriptum est?“What is written in the law?quomodo legis? How do you read it?”
Ille respondens dixit:In response, he said:Diliges Dominum Deum tuum ex toto corde tuo,“You shall love the Lord your God from your whole heart,et ex tota anima tua,and from your whole soul,et ex omnibus virtutibus tuis, and from all your strength,et ex omni mente tua:and from all your mind,et proximum tuum sicut teipsum.and your neighbor as yourself.”
Dixitque illi:And he said to him:Recte respondisti:“You have answered correctly.hoc fac,Do this,et vives.and you will live.”
Ille autem volens justificare seipsum,But since he wanted to justify himself, dixit ad Jesum:he said to Jesus,Et quis est meus proximus?“And who is my neighbor?”
Suscipiens autem Jesus,Then Jesus, taking this up, said:dixit: Homo quidam descendebat ab Jerusalem in Jericho,“A certain man descended from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he happened upon robbers,et incidit in latrones, who now also plundered him.qui etiam despoliaverunt eum:And inflicting him with wounds,et plagis impositis abierunt semivivo relicto.they went away, leaving him behind, half-alive.
Accidit autem ut sacerdos quidam descenderet eadem via:And it happened that a certain priest was descending along the same way.et viso illo præterivit. And seeing him, he passed by.
Similiter et Levita,And similarly a Levite, cum esset secus locum, when he was near the place,et videret eum, also saw him, pertransiit.and he passed by.
Samaritanus autem quidam iter faciens,But a certain Samaritan, being on a journey, venit secus eum:came near him.et videns eum,And seeing him, misericordia motus est.he was moved by mercy.
Et appropians alligavit vulnera ejus,And approaching him, infundens oleumhe bound up his wounds,et vinum:pouring oil and wine on them.et imponens illum in jumentum suum,And setting him on his pack animal, duxit in stabulum,he brought him to an inn,et curam ejus egit.and he took care of him.
Et altera die protulit duos denarios,And the next day, he took out two denarii,et dedit stabulario, et ait:and he gave them to the proprietor,Curam illius habe:and he said: ‘Take care of him.et quodcumque supererogaveris,And whatever extra you will have spent, ego cum rediero reddam tibi.I will repay to you at my return.’
Quis horum trium videtur tibi proximus fuisse illi,Which of these three, does it seem to you,qui incidit in latrones?was a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?”
At ille dixit:Then he said,Qui fecit misericordiam in illum.“The one who acted with mercy toward him.”Et ait illi Jesus:And Jesus said to him,Vade,“Go,et tu fac similiter.and act similarly.”
Factum est autem,Now it happened that, dum irent, while they were traveling,et ipse intravit in quoddam castellum:he entered into a certain town.et mulier quædam,And a certain woman,Martha nomine, named Martha, excepit illum in domum suam, received him into her home.
et huic erat soror nomine Maria,And she had a sister, named Mary,quæ etiam sedens secus pedes Domini, who, while sitting beside the Lord’s feet, audiebat verbum illius.was listening to his word.
Martha autem satagebat circa frequens ministerium:Now Martha was continually busying herself with serving.quæ stetit, et ait:And she stood still and said:Domine,“Lord, non est tibi curæ quod soror mea reliquit me solam ministrare?is it not a concern to you that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore, dic ergo illi ut me adjuvet.speak to her, so that she may help me.”
Et respondens dixit illi Dominus:And the Lord responded by saying to her:Martha,“Martha,Martha,Martha, sollicita es,you are anxiouset turbaris erga plurima, and troubled over many things.
porro unum est necessarium. And yet only one thing is necessary.Maria optimam partem elegit,Mary has chosen the best portion,quæ non auferetur ab ea.and it shall not be taken away from her.”
