Convocatis autem duodecim Apostolis,Then calling together the twelve Apostles, dedit illis virtutem et potestatem super omnia dæmonia, et ut languores curarent.he gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases.
Et misit illos prædicare regnum Dei,And he sent them to preach the kingdom of Godet sanare infirmos.and to heal the infirm.
Et ait ad illos:And he said to them:Nihil tuleritis in via,“You should take nothing for the journey, neque virgam, neither staff, neque peram, nor traveling bag, neque panem, nor bread, neque pecuniam, nor money;neque duas tunicas habeatis.and you should not have two tunics.
Et in quamcumque domum intraveritis,And into whatever house you shall enter, ibi manete, lodge there,et inde ne exeatis.and do not move away from there.
Et quicumque non receperint vos:And whoever will not have received you, exeuntes de civitate illa, upon departing from that city, etiam pulverem pedum vestrorum excutite in testimonium supra illos.shake off even the dust on your feet, as a testimony against them.”
Egressi autem circuibant per castella evangelizantes,And going forth, they traveled around, through the towns,et curantes ubique.evangelizing and curing everywhere.
Audivit autem Herodes tetrarcha omnia quæ fiebant ab eo,Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all the things that were being done by him,et hæsitabat eo quod dicereturbut he doubted, because it was said
a quibusdam: Quia Joannes surrexit a mortuis:by some, “For John has risen from the dead,”a quibusdam vero:yet truly, by others,Quia Elias apparuit:“For Elijah has appeared,”ab aliis autem:and by still others,Quia propheta unus de antiquis surrexit.“For one of the prophets from of old has risen again.”
Et ait Herodes:And Herod said:Joannem ego decollavi:“I beheaded John. So then, quis est autem iste, de quo ego talia audio?who is this, about whom I hear such things?”Et quærebat videre eum.And he sought to see him.
Et reversi Apostoli,And when the Apostles returned, narraverunt illi quæcumque fecerunt:they explained to him all the things that they had done.et assumptis illis secessit seorsum in locum desertum,And taking them with him, he withdrew to a deserted place apart, qui est Bethsaidæ.which belongs to Bethsaida.
Quod cum cognovissent turbæ,But when the crowd had realized this, secutæ sunt illum:they followed him.et excepit eos, et loquebatur illis de regno Dei,And he received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God.et eos, qui cura indigebant,And those who were in need of cures, sanabat.he healed.
Dies autem cœperat declinare,Then the day began to decline.et accedentes duodecim dixerunt illi:And drawing near, the twelve said to him:Dimitte turbas,“Dismiss the crowds,ut euntes in castella villasque quæ circa sunt,so that, by going into the surrounding towns and villages, divertant, et inveniant escas:they may separate and find food.quia hic in loco deserto sumus. For we are here in a deserted place.”
Ait autem ad illos:But he said to them,Vos date illis manducare. At illi dixerunt:“You give them something to eat.” And they said,Non sunt nobis plus quam quinque panes et duo pisces:“There is with us no more than five loaves and two fish, nisi forte nos eamus, et emamus in omnem hanc turbam escas.unless perhaps we are to go and buy food for this entire multitude.”
Erant autem fere viri quinque millia. Now there were about five thousand men.Ait autem ad discipulos suos:So he said to his disciples,Facite illos discumbere per convivia quinquagenos.“Have them recline to eat in groups of fifty.”
Et ita fecerunt:And they did so.et discumbere fecerunt omnes. And they caused them all to recline to eat.
Acceptis autem quinque panibus et duobus piscibus,Then, taking the five loaves and the two fish, respexit in cælum,he gazed up to heaven,et benedixit illis: et fregit, et distribuit discipulis suis, and he blessed and broke and distributed them to his disciples,ut ponerent ante turbas.in order to set them before the crowd.
Et manducaverunt omnes,And they all ateet saturati sunt.and were satisfied.Et sublatum est quod superfuit illis,And twelve baskets of fragments were taken up,fragmentorum cophini duodecim.which were left over from them.
Et factum est cum solus esset orans,And it happened that, erant cum illowhen he was praying alone,et discipuli:his disciples also were with him,et interrogavit illos, and he questioned them, dicens:saying:Quem me dicunt esse turbæ?“Who do the multitudes say that I am?”
At illi responderunt,But they answered by saying:et dixerunt:“John the Baptist.Joannem Baptistam,But some say Elijah.alii autem Eliam,Yet truly, alii vero quia unus propheta de prioribus surrexit.others say that one of the prophets from before has risen again.”
Dixit autem illis:Then he said to them,Vos autem quem me esse dicitis?“But who do you say that I am?”Respondens Simon Petrus,In response, dixit:Simon Peter said,Christum Dei.“The Christ of God.”
At ille increpans illos,But speaking sharply to them,præcepit ne cui dicerent hoc,he instructed them not to tell this to anyone,
dicens:saying,Quia oportet Filium hominis multa pati,“For the Son of man must suffer many things,et reprobari a senioribus, and be rejected by the elderset principibus sacerdotum, and the leaders of the priestset scribis, and the scribes,et occidi, and be killed,et tertia die resurgere.and on the third day rise again.”
Dicebat autem ad omnes:Then he said to everyone:Si quis vult post me venire,“If anyone is willing to come after me:abneget semetipsum, let him deny himself,et tollat crucem suam quotidie, and take up his cross every day,et sequatur me.and follow me.
Qui enim voluerit animam suam salvam facere,For whoever will have saved his life, perdet illam:will lose it.nam qui perdiderit animam suam propter me,Yet whoever will have lost his life for my sake, salvam faciet illam.will save it.
Quid enim proficit homo,For how does it benefit a man,si lucretur universum mundum,if he were to gain the whole world,se autem ipsum perdat, yet lose himself,et detrimentum sui faciat?or cause himself harm?
Nam qui me erubuerit, et meos sermones: hunc Filius hominis erubescet cum venerit in majestate sua, et Patris, et sanctorum angelorum. For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words: of him the Son of man will be ashamed, when he will have arrived in his majesty and that of his Father and of the holy Angels.
Dico autem vobis vere:And yet, I tell you a truth:sunt aliqui hic stantes, qui non gustabunt mortem donec videant regnum Dei.There are some standing here who shall not taste death, until they see the kingdom of God.”
Factum est autem post hæc verba fere dies octo,And it happened that,et assumpsit Petrum, about eight days after these words,et Jacobum,he took Peter and James and John,et Joannem, and he ascended onto a mountain,et ascendit in montem ut oraret.so that he might pray.
Et facta est,And while he was praying, dum oraret, the appearance of his countenance was altered, species vultus ejus altera:and his vestment became whiteet vestitus ejus albus et refulgens.and shining.
Et ecce duo viri loquebantur cum illo. And behold, two men were talking with him.Erant autem Moyses et Elias,And these were Moses and Elijah, appearing in majesty.
visi in majestate: et dicebant excessum ejus,And they spoke of his departure, quem completurus erat in Jerusalem.which he would accomplish at Jerusalem.
Petrus vero,Yet truly,et qui cum illo erant, gravati erant somno.Peter and those who were with him were weighed down by sleep.Et evigilantes viderunt majestatem ejus, et duos viros qui stabant cum illo. And becoming alert, they saw his majesty and the two men who were standing with him.
Et factum est cum discederent ab illo,And it happened that, as these were departing from him,ait Petrus ad Jesum:Peter said to Jesus:Præceptor,“Teacher, bonum est nos hic esse:it is good for us to be here.et faciamus tria tabernacula,And so, let us make three tabernacles:unum tibi, one for you,et unum Moysi, and one for Moses,et unum Eliæ:and one for Elijah.”nesciens quid diceret. For he did not know what he was saying.
Hæc autem illo loquente,Then, facta est nubes,as he was saying these things,et obumbravit eos:a cloud came and overshadowed them.et timuerunt,And as these were entering into the cloud, intrantibus illis in nubem.they were afraid.
Et vox facta est de nube,And a voice came from the cloud, dicens:saying:Hic est Filius meus dilectus,“This is my beloved Son.ipsum audite.Listen to him.”
Et dum fieret vox, inventus est Jesus solus. Et ipsi tacuerunt, et nemini dixerunt in illis diebus quidquam ex his quæ viderant. And while the voice was being uttered, Jesus was found to be alone. And they were silent and told no one, in those days, any of these things, which they had seen.
Factum est autem in sequenti die,But it happened on the following day that, descendentibus illis de monte,as they were descending from the mountain, occurrit illis turba multa.a great crowd met him.
Et ecce vir de turba exclamavit,And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, dicens:saying,Magister,“Teacher, obsecro te,I beg you, respice in filium meum quia unicus est mihi:look kindly on my son, for he is my only son.
et ecce spiritus apprehendit eum,And behold, a spirit takes hold of him,et subito clamat, and he suddenly cries out,et elidit, et dissipat eum cum spuma, and it throws him down and convulses him, so that he foams.et vix discedit dilanians eum:And though it tears him apart, it leaves him only with difficulty.
et rogavi discipulos tuos ut ejicerent illum,And I asked your disciples to cast him out,et non potuerunt.and they were unable.”
Respondens autem Jesus,And in response, dixit:Jesus said:O generatio infidelis,“O unfaithfulet perversa, and perverse generation!usquequo ero apud vos,How long will I be with youet patiar vos?and endure you?adduc huc filium tuum.Bring your son here.”
Et cum accederet,And as he was approaching him, elisit illum dæmonium, the demon threw him downet dissipavit.and convulsed him.
Et increpavit Jesus spiritum immundum,And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit,et sanavit puerum, and he healed the boy,et reddidit illum patri ejus.and he restored him to his father.
Stupebant autem omnes in magnitudine Dei:And all were astonished at the greatness of God.omnibusque mirantibus in omnibus quæ faciebat,And as everyone was wondering over all that he was doing, dixit ad discipulos suos:he said to his disciples:Ponite vos in cordibus vestris sermones istos:“You must set these words in your hearts.Filius enim hominis futurum est ut tradatur in manus hominum. For it shall be that the Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men.”
At illi ignorabant verbum istud,But they did not understand this word,et erat velatum ante eos ut non sentirent illud:and it was concealed from them, so that they did not perceive it.et timebant eum interrogare de hoc verbo. And they were afraid to question him about this word.
Intravit autem cogitatio in eos quis eorum major esset. Now an idea entered into them, as to which of them was greater.
At Jesus videns cogitationes cordis illorum,But Jesus, apprehendit puerum, perceiving the thoughts of their hearts,et statuit illum secus se,took a child and stood him beside him.
et ait illis:And he said to them:Quicumque susceperit puerum istum in nomine meo,“Whoever will receive this child in my name,me recipit:receives me;et quicumque me receperit, and whoever receives me,recipit eum qui me misit.receives him who sent me.Nam qui minor est inter vos omnes,For whoever is the lesser among you all,hic major est.the same is greater.”
Respondens autem Joannes dixit:And responding, John said:Præceptor,“Teacher, vidimus quemdam in nomine tuo ejicientem dæmonia,we saw a certain one casting out demons in your name.et prohibuimus eum:And we prohibited him, quia non sequitur nobiscum.for he does not follow with us.”
Et ait ad illum Jesus:And Jesus said to him:Nolite prohibere:“Do not prohibit him.qui enim non est adversum vos,For whoever is not against you,pro vobis est.is for you.”
Factum est autem dum complerentur dies assumptionis ejus,Now it happened that, while the days of his dissipation were being completed,et ipse faciem suam firmavit ut iret in Jerusalem.he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem.
Et misit nuntios ante conspectum suum:And he sent messengers before his face.et euntes intraverunt in civitatem Samaritanorum ut parerent illi. And going on, they entered into a city of the Samaritans, to prepare for him.
Et non receperunt eum,And they would not receive him, quia facies ejus erat euntis in Jerusalem.because his face was going toward Jerusalem.
Cum vidissent autem discipuli ejus JacobusAnd when his disciples,et Joannes,James and John, dixerunt:had seen this,Domine, they said, vis dicimus ut ignis descendat de cælo,“Lord,et consumat illos?do you want us to call for fire to descend from heaven and consume them?”
Et conversus increpavit illos,And turning, he rebuked them, saying:dicens: Nescitis cujus spiritus estis.“Do you not know of whose spirit you are?
Filius hominis non venit animas perdere,The Son of man came, not to destroy lives, sed salvare.but to save them.”Et abierunt in aliud castellum. And they went into another town.
Factum est autem:And it happened that, ambulantibus illis in via,as they were walking along the way, dixit quidam ad illum:someone said to him,Sequar te quocumque ieris.“I will follow you, wherever you will go.”
Dixit illi Jesus:Jesus said to him:Vulpes foveas habent,“Foxes have dens,et volucres cæli nidos:and the birds of the air have nests.Filius autem hominis non habet ubi caput reclinet. But the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head.”
Ait autem ad alterum:Then he said to another,Sequere me:“Follow me.”ille autem dixit:But he said,Domine,“Lord, permitte mihi primum ire, permit me first to goet sepelire patrem meum.and bury my father.”
Dixitque ei Jesus:And Jesus said to him:Sine ut mortui sepeliant mortuos suos:“Let the dead bury their dead.tu autem vade,But you goet annuntia regnum Dei.and announce the kingdom of God.”
Et ait alter:And another said:Sequar te Domine,“I will follow you,sed permitte mihi primum renuntiare his quæ domi sunt.Lord. But permit me first to explain this to those of my house.”
Ait ad illum Jesus:Jesus said to him,Nemo mittens manum suam ad aratrum,“No one who puts his hand to the plow,et respiciens retro, and then looks back, aptus est regno Dei.is fit for the kingdom of God.”
