Dicebat autem et parabolam ad illos,Now he also told them a parable, quoniam oportet semper orare et non deficere, that we should continually pray and not cease,
dicens:saying:Judex quidam erat in quadam civitate,“There was a certain judge in a certain city, qui Deum non timebat, who did not fear Godet hominem non reverebatur.and did not respect man.
Vidua autem quædam erat in civitate illa,But there was a certain widow in that city,et veniebat ad eum,and she went to him, dicens:saying,Vindica me de adversario meo.‘Vindicate me from my adversary.’
Et nolebat per multum tempus. And he refused to do so for a long time.Post hæc autem dixit intra se:But afterwards, he said within himself:Etsi Deum non timeo, nec hominem revereor:‘Even though I do not fear God, nor respect man,
tamen quia molesta est mihi hæc vidua, yet because this widow is pestering me, I will vindicate her, vindicabo illam, lest by returning,ne in novissimo veniens sugillet me.she may, in the end, wear me out.’”
Ait autem Dominus:Then the Lord said:Audite quid judex iniquitatis dicit:“Listen to what the unjust judge said.
Deus autem non faciet vindictam electorum suorum clamantium ad se die ac nocte,So then, will not God grant the vindication of his elect, who cry out to him day and night?et patientiam habebit in illis?Or will he continue to endure them?
Dico vobis quia cito faciet vindictam illorum.I tell you that he will quickly bring vindication to them.Verumtamen Filius hominis veniens,Yet truly, putas, when the Son of man returns, inveniet fidem in terra?do you think that he will find faith on earth?”
Dixit autem et ad quosdam qui in se confidebant tamquam justi,Now about certain persons who consider themselves to be just,et aspernabantur ceteros, while disdaining others, parabolam istam:he told also this parable:
Duo homines ascenderunt in templum ut orarent:“Two men ascended to the temple, in order to pray.unus pharisæus et alter publicanus. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a tax collector.
Pharisæus stans, hæc apud se orabat:Standing, the Pharisee prayed within himself in this way:Deus,‘O God,gratias ago tibi, quia non sum sicut ceteri hominum:I give thanks to you that I am not like the rest of men:raptores, robbers, unjust, injusti, adulterers, adulteri, velut etiam hic publicanus:even as this tax collector chooses to be.
jejuno bis in sabbato,I fast twice between Sabbaths.decimas do omnium quæ possideo.I give tithes from all that I possess.’
Et publicanus a longe stans,And the tax collector, standing at a distance, nolebat nec oculos ad cælum levare: sed percutiebat pectus suum, was not willing to even lift up his eyes to heaven. But he struck his chest, dicens:saying:Deus propitius esto mihi peccatori.‘O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.’
Dico vobis,I say to you, descendit hic justificatus in domum suam ab illo:this one descended to his house justified, but not the other.quia omnis qui se exaltat, humiliabitur,For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled;et qui se humiliat, exaltabitur.and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
Afferebant autem ad illum et infantes,And they were bringing little children to him,ut eos tangeret.so that he might touch them.Quod cum viderent discipuli,And when the disciples saw this, increpabant illos.they rebuked them.
Jesus autem convocans illos,But Jesus, calling them together, dixit:said:Sinite pueros venire ad me,“Allow the children to come to me,et nolite vetare eos:and do not be an obstacle to them.talium est enim regnum Dei.For of such is the kingdom of God.
Amen dico vobis,Amen, I say to you, quicumque non acceperit regnum Dei sicut puer, whoever will not accept the kingdom of God like a child, non intrabit in illud.will not enter into it.”
Et interrogavit eum quidam princeps,And a certain leader questioned him, dicens:saying:Magister bone,“Good teacher, quid faciens vitam æternam possidebo?what should I do to possess eternal life?”
Dixit autem ei Jesus:Then Jesus said to him:Quid me dicis bonum?“Why do you call me good?nemo bonus nisi solus Deus.No one is good except God alone.
Mandata nosti:You know the commandments:non occides; You shall not kill.non mœchaberis; You shall not commit adultery.non furtum facies; You shall not steal.non falsum testimonium dices; You shall not give false testimony.honora patrem tuum et matrem.Honor your father and mother.”
Qui ait:And he said,Hæc omnia custodivi a juventute mea.“I have kept all these things from my youth.”
Quo audito,And when Jesus heard this,Jesus ait ei:he said to him:Adhuc unum tibi deest:“One thing is still lacking for you.omnia quæcumque habes vende,Sell all the things that you have,et da pauperibus, and give to the poor.et habebis thesaurum in cælo:And then you will have treasure in heaven.et veni,And come, sequere me.follow me.”
His ille auditis,When he heard this, contristatus est:he became very sorrowful.quia dives erat valde. For he was very rich.
Videns autem Jesus illum tristem factum,Then Jesus, seeing him brought to sorrow, dixit:said:Quam difficile, qui pecunias habent, in regnum Dei intrabunt!“How difficult it is for those who have money to enter into the kingdom of God!
facilius est enim camelum per foramen acus transire quam divitem intrare in regnum Dei.For it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a wealthy man to enter into the kingdom of God.”
Et dixerunt qui audiebant:And those who were listening to this said,Et quis potest salvus fieri?“Then who is able to be saved?”
Ait illis:He said to them,Quæ impossibilia sunt apud homines, possibilia sunt apud Deum.“Things that are impossible with men are possible with God.”
Ait autem Petrus:And Peter said, “Behold,Ecce nos dimisimus omnia et secuti sumus te.we have left everything, and we have followed you.”
Qui dixit eis:And he said to them:Amen dico vobis,“Amen, I say to you, nemo est qui reliquit domum, aut parentes, there is no one who has left behind home, or parents, aut fratres,or brothers, or a wife, aut uxorem,or children, aut filios propter regnum Dei,for the sake of the kingdom of God,
et non recipiat multo plura in hoc tempore, who will not receive much more in this time,et in sæculo venturo vitam æternam.and in the age to come eternal life.”
Assumpsit autem Jesus duodecim,Then Jesus took the twelve aside,et ait illis:and he said to them:Ecce ascendimus Jerosolymam,“Behold, we are ascending to Jerusalem,et consummabuntur omnia quæ scripta sunt per prophetas de Filio hominis:and everything shall be completed which was written by the prophets about the Son of man.
tradetur enim gentibus,For he will be handed over to the Gentiles,et illudetur, and he will be mockedet flagellabitur, and scourgedet conspuetur:and spit upon.
et postquam flagellaverint,And after they have scourged him, occident eum, they will kill him.et tertia die resurget. And on the third day, he will rise again.”
Et ipsi nihil horum intellexerunt,But they understood none of these things.et erat verbum istud absconditum ab eis,For this word was concealed from them,et non intelligebant quæ dicebantur.and they did not understand the things that were said.
Factum est autem,Now it happened that, cum appropinquaret Jericho,as he was approaching Jericho,cæcus quidam sedebat secus viam,a certain blind man was sitting beside the way,mendicans.begging.
Et cum audiret turbam prætereuntem,And when he heard the multitude passing by,interrogabat quid hoc esset.he asked what this was.
Dixerunt autem ei quod Jesus Nazarenus transiret. And they told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by.
Et clamavit,And he cried out,dicens:saying,Jesu,“Jesus,fili David,Son of David,miserere mei.take pity on me!”
Et qui præibant, increpabant eum ut taceret. And those who were passing by rebuked him, so that he would be silent.Ipse vero multo magis clamabat:Yet truly, he cried out all the more,Fili David,“Son of David, miserere mei.take pity on me!”
Stans autem Jesus jussit illum adduci ad se.Then Jesus, standing still, ordered him to be brought to him.Et cum appropinquasset,And when he had drawn near, interrogavit illum,he questioned him,
dicens:saying,Quid tibi vis faciam? At ille dixit:“What do you want, that I might do for you?”Domine,So he said,ut videam.“Lord, that I may see.”
Et Jesus dixit illi:And Jesus said to him:Respice,“Look around.fides tua te salvum fecit.Your faith has saved you.”
Et confestim vidit,And immediately he saw.et sequebatur illum magnificans Deum. And he followed him, magnifying God.Et omnis plebs ut vidit,And all the people, when they saw this, dedit laudem Deo.gave praise to God.
