Appropinquabat autem dies festus azymorum,Now the days of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called Passover, qui dicitur Pascha:were approaching.
et quærebant principes sacerdotum,And the leaders of the priests, and the scribes,et scribæ, quomodo Jesum interficerent:were seeking a way to execute Jesus. Yet truly, timebant vero plebem.they were afraid of the people.
Intravit autem Satanas in Judam,Then Satan entered into Judas, qui cognominabatur Iscariotes, who was surnamed Iscariot, unum de duodecim:one of the twelve.
et abiit,And he went outet locutus est cum principibus sacerdotum, and was speaking with the leaders of the priests,et magistratibus, and the magistrates, quemadmodum illum traderet eis.as to how he might hand him over to them.
Et gavisi sunt,And they were glad,et pacti sunt pecuniam illi dare.and so they made an agreement to give him money.
Et spopondit,And he made a promise.et quærebat opportunitatem ut traderet illum sine turbis. And he was seeking an opportunity to hand him over, apart from the crowds.
Venit autem dies azymorum,Then the day of Unleavened Bread arrived,in qua necesse erat occidi pascha.on which it was necessary to kill the Pascal lamb.
Et misit PetrumAnd he sent Peter and John,et Joannem, saying, dicens:“Go out,Euntes parate nobis pascha, and prepare the Passover for us,ut manducemus.so that we may eat.”
At illi dixerunt:But they said,Ubi vis paremus?“Where do you want us to prepare it?”
Et dixit ad eos:And he said to them: “Behold,Ecce introëuntibus vobis in civitatem occurret vobis homo quidam amphoram aquæ portans:as you are entering into the city, a certain man will meet you, carrying a pitcher of water.sequimini eum in domum, in quam intrat,Follow him to the house into which he enters.
et dicetis patrifamilias domus:And you shall say to the father of the household:Dicit tibi Magister:‘The Teacher says to you:Ubi est diversorium,Where is the guestroom, ubi pascha cum discipulis meis manducem?where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’
Et ipse ostendet vobis cœnaculum magnum stratum,And he will show you a large cenacle, fully furnished. And so,et ibi parate.prepare it there.”
Euntes autem invenerunt sicut dixit illis,And going out, they found it to be just as he had told them.et paraverunt pascha. And they prepared the Passover.
Et cum facta esset hora,And when the hour had arrived, discubuit,he sat down at table,et duodecim apostoli cum eo.and the twelve Apostles with him.
Et ait illis:And he said to them:Desiderio desideravi hoc pascha manducare vobiscum,“With longing have I desired to eat this Passover with you, antequam patiar.before I suffer.
Dico enim vobis,For I say to you, quia ex hoc non manducabo illud, that from this time, I will not eat it,donec impleatur in regno Dei.until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
Et accepto calice gratias egit,And having taken the chalice,et dixit:he gave thanks,Accipite, and he said:et dividite inter vos.“Take this and share it among yourselves.
Dico enim vobis quod non bibam de generatione vitis donec regnum Dei veniat. For I say to you, that I will not drink from the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God arrives.”
Et accepto pane gratias egit,And taking bread,et fregit, et dedit eis, dicens:he gave thanks and broke it and gave it to them,Hoc est corpus meum, saying: “This is my body, quod pro vobis datur:which is given for you.hoc facite in meam commemorationem.Do this as a commemoration of me.”
SimiliterSimilarly also,et calicem,he took the chalice, postquam cœnavit, after he had eaten the meal, dicens:saying:Hic est calix novum testamentum in sanguine meo,“This chalice is the new covenant in my blood, qui pro vobis fundetur.which will be shed for you.
Verumtamen ecce manus tradentis me, mecum est in mensa. But in truth, behold, the hand of my betrayer is with me at table.
Et quidem Filius hominis,And indeed, secundum quod definitum est,the Son of man goes according to what has been determined.vadit:And yet, verumtamen væ homini illi per quem tradetur.woe to that man by whom he will be betrayed.”
Et ipsi cœperunt quærere inter se quis esset ex eis qui hoc facturus esset. And they began to inquire among themselves, as to which of them might do this.
Facta est autem et contentio inter eos,Now there was also a contention among them, quis eorum videretur esse major.as to which of them seemed to be the greater.
Dixit autem eis:And he said to them:Reges gentium dominantur eorum:“The kings of the Gentiles dominate them;et qui potestatem habent super eos, benefici vocantur.and those who hold authority over them are called beneficent.
Vos autem non sic:But it must not be so with you.sed qui major est in vobis,Instead, whoever is greater among you, fiat sicut minor:let him become the lesser.et qui præcessor est,And whoever is the leader, sicut ministrator.let him become the server.
Nam quis major est,For who is greater:qui recumbit,he who sits at table,an qui ministrat?or he who serves?nonne qui recumbit? Is not he who sits at table?Ego autem in medio vestrum sum, sicut qui ministrat:Yet I am in your midst as one who serves.
vos autem estis, qui permansistis mecum in tentationibus meis. But you are those who have remained with me during my trials.
Et ego dispono vobis sicut disposuit mihi Pater meus regnum,And I dispose to you, just as my Father has disposed to me, a kingdom,
ut edatisso that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom,et bibatis super mensam meam in regno meo,and so that you may sit upon thrones,et sedeatis super thronos judicantes duodecim tribus Israël.judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
Ait autem Dominus:And the Lord said:Simon,“Simon,Simon,Simon!ecce Satanas expetivit vos ut cribraret sicut triticum:Behold, Satan has asked for you, so that he may sift you like wheat.
ego autem rogavi pro te ut non deficiat fides tua:But I have prayed for you, so that your faith may not fail,et tu aliquando conversus, and so that you, once converted, confirma fratres tuos.may confirm your brothers.”
Qui dixit ei: Domine,And he said to him, “Lord, tecum paratus sum et in carcerem et in mortem ire.I am prepared to go with you, even to prison and to death.”
At ille dixit:And he said,Dico tibi,“I say to you,Petre,Peter, non cantabit hodie gallus, the rooster will not crow this day, donec ter abneges nosse me.until you have three times denied that you know me.”Et dixit eis:And he said to them,
Quando misi vos sine sacculo,“When I sent you without moneyet pera,or provisionset calceamentis,or shoes, numquid aliquid defuit vobis?did you lack anything?”
At illi dixerunt:And they said,Nihil.“Nothing.”Dixit ergo eis:Then he said to them:Sed nunc qui habet sacculum,“But now, tollat;let whoever has money take it,similiter et peram:and likewise with provisions.et qui non habet,And whoever does not have these, vendat tunicam suam et emat gladium.let him sell his coat and buy a sword.
Dico enim vobis,For I say to you, quoniam adhuc hoc quod scriptum est, oportet impleri in me:that what has been written must still be fulfilled in me:Et cum iniquis deputatus est.‘And he was esteemed with the wicked.’Etenim ea quæ sunt de me finem habent.Yet even these things about me have an end.”
At illi dixerunt:So they said, “Lord,Domine, behold, ecce duo gladii hic.there are two swords here.”At ille dixit eis: Satis est.But he said to them, “It is sufficient.”
Et egressus ibat secundum consuetudinem in monte Olivarum. Secuti sunt autem illum et discipuli. And departing, he went out, according to his custom, to the Mount of Olives. And his disciples also followed him.
Et cum pervenisset ad locum,And when he had arrived at the place, dixit illis:he said to them:Orate ne intretis in tentationem.“Pray, lest you enter into temptation.”
Et ipse avulsus est ab eis quantum jactus est lapidis:And he was separated from them by about a stone’s throw.et positis genibus orabat,And kneeling down, he prayed,
dicens:saying:Pater,“Father,si vis, transfer calicem istum a me:if you are willing, take this chalice away from me.verumtamen non mea voluntas,Yet truly, let not my will, sed tua fiat.but yours, be done.”
Apparuit autem illi angelus de cælo,Then an Angel appeared to him from heaven,confortans eum.strengthening him.Et factus in agonia,And being in agony,prolixius orabat.he prayed more intensely;
Et factus est sudor ejus sicut guttæ sanguinis decurrentis in terram.and so his sweat became like drops of blood, running down to the ground.
Et cum surrexisset ab oratione et venisset ad discipulos suos,And when he had risen up from prayer and had gone to his disciples, invenit eos dormientes præ tristitia.he found them sleeping out of sorrow.
Et ait illis:And he said to them:Quid dormitis?“Why are you sleeping?surgite,Rise up,orate, pray,ne intretis in tentationem.lest you enter into temptation.”
Adhuc eo loquente, ecce turba:While he was still speaking, behold,et qui vocabatur Judas, unus de duodecim,a crowd arrived. And he who is called Judas, antecedebat eos,one of the twelve,et appropinquavit Jesu ut oscularetur eum.went ahead of them and approached Jesus, in order to kiss him.
Jesus autem dixit illi:And Jesus said to him,Juda,“Judas, osculo Filium hominis tradis?do you betray the Son of man with a kiss?”
Videntes autem hi qui circa ipsum erant,Then those who were around him, quod futurum erat, realizing what was about to happen, dixerunt ei:said to him:Domine,“Lord,si percutimus in gladio?shall we strike with the sword?”
Et percussit unus ex illis servum principis sacerdotum,And one of them struck the servant of the high priestet amputavit auriculam ejus dexteram.and cut off his right ear.
Respondens autem Jesus,But in response, ait:Jesus said,Sinite usque huc.“Permit even this.”Et cum tetigisset auriculam ejus,And when he had touched his ear, sanavit eum.he healed him.
Dixit autem Jesus ad eos qui venerant ad se principes sacerdotum,Then Jesus said to the leaders of the priests, and the magistrates of the temple,et magistratus templi, et seniores:and the elders, who had come to him:Quasi ad latronem existis cum gladiis et fustibus?“Have you gone out, as if against a thief, with swords and clubs?
Cum quotidie vobiscum fuerim in templo,When I was with you each day in the temple, non extendistis manus in me:you did not extend your hands against me.sed hæc est hora vestra,But this is your houret potestas tenebrarum.and that of the power of darkness.”
Comprehendentes autem eum,And apprehending him, duxerunt ad domum principis sacerdotum:they led him to the house of the high priest.Petrus vero sequebatur a longe.Yet truly, Peter followed at a distance.
Accenso autem igne in medio atriiNow as they were sitting around a fire,et circumsedentibus illis, which had been kindled in the middle of the atrium, erat Petrus in medio eorum.Peter was in their midst.
Quem cum vidisset ancilla quædam sedentem ad lumen,And when a certain woman servant had seen him sitting in its light,et eum fuisset intuita, and had looked at him intently, dixit:she said,Et hic cum illo erat.“This one was also with him.”
At ille negavit eum, dicens:But he denied him by saying,Mulier,“Woman, non novi illum.I do not know him.”
Et post pusillum alius videns eum,And after a little while, another one, seeing him, dixit: Et tu de illis es.said, “You also are one of them.”Petrus vero ait:Yet Peter said,O homo,“O man,non sum.I am not.”
Et intervallo facto quasi horæ unius,And after the interval of about one hour had passed, alius quidam affirmabat, someone else affirmed it,dicens:saying:Vere et hic cum illo erat:“Truly, this one also was with him.nam et Galilæus est.For he is also a Galilean.”
Et ait Petrus:And Peter said:Homo,“Man,nescio quid dicis.I do not know what you are saying.”Et continuo,And at once, adhuc illo loquente, while he was still speaking, cantavit gallus.the rooster crowed.
Et conversus Dominus respexit Petrum,And the Lord turned aroundet recordatus est Petrus verbi Domini, and looked at Peter.sicut dixerat:And Peter remembered the word of the Lord that he had said:Quia priusquam gallus cantet,“For before the rooster crows, ter me negabis.you will deny me three times.”
Et egressus foras Petrus flevit amare. And going out, Peter wept bitterly.
Et viri qui tenebant illum, illudebant ei, cædentes. And the men who were holding him ridiculed him and beat him.
Et velaverunt eum, et percutiebant faciem ejus:And they blindfolded him and repeatedly struck his face.et interrogabant eum,And they questioned him, dicentes:saying:Prophetiza,“Prophesy!quis est, qui te percussit?Who is it that struck you?”
Et alia multa blasphemantes dicebant in eum.And blaspheming in many other ways, they spoke against him.
Et ut factus est dies,And when it was daytime, convenerunt seniores plebis, the elders of the people,et principes sacerdotum, and the leaders of the priests,et scribæ,and the scribes convened.et duxerunt illum in concilium suum,And they led him into their council, dicentes:saying,Si tu es Christus,“If you are the Christ, dic nobis.tell us.”
Et ait illis:And he said to them:Si vobis dixero,“If I tell you,non credetis mihi:you will not believe me.
si autem et interrogavero,And if I also question you,non respondebitis mihi, you will not answer me.neque dimittetis.Neither will you release me.
Ex hoc autem erit Filius hominis sedens a dextris virtutis Dei.But from this time, the Son of man will be sitting at the right hand of the power of God.”
Dixerunt autem omnes:Then they all said,Tu ergo es Filius Dei?“So you are the Son of God?”Qui ait:And he said.Vos dicitis, quia ego sum.“You are saying that I am.”
At illi dixerunt:And they said:Quid adhuc desideramus testimonium?“Why do we still require testimony?ipsi enim audivimus de ore ejus. For we have heard it ourselves, from his own mouth.”
