Anno autem quintodecimo imperii Tiberii Cæsaris,Then, procurante Pontio Pilato Judæam,in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, tetrarcha autem Galilææ Herode,Pontius Pilate being procurator of Judea,Philippo autem fratre ejus tetrarcha Iturææ,and Herod tetrarch of Galilee,et Trachonitidis regionis, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis,et Lysania Abilinæ tetrarcha, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

sub principibus sacerdotum Anna et Caipha:under the high priests Annas and Caiaphas:factum est verbum Domini super Joannem, the word of the Lord came to John,Zachariæ filium, the son of Zechariah,in deserto.in the wilderness.

Et venit in omnem regionem Jordanis,And he went into the entire region of the Jordan,prædicans baptismum pœnitentiæ in remissionem peccatorum, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins,

sicut scriptum est in libro sermonum Isaiæ prophetæ:just as it has been written in the book of the sermons of the prophet Isaiah:Vox clamantis in deserto:“The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:Parate viam Domini;Prepare the way of the Lord.rectas facite semitas ejus:Make straight his paths.

omnis vallis implebitur,Every valley shall be filled,et omnis mons, and every mountainet collis humiliabitur:and hill shall be brought low.et erunt prava in directa,And what is crooked shall be made straight.et aspera in vias planas:And the rough paths shall be made into level ways.

et videbit omnis caro salutare Dei.And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”

Dicebat ergo ad turbas quæ exibant ut baptizarentur ab ipso:Therefore, he said to the crowd that went out in order to be baptized by him:Genimina viperarum,“You progeny of vipers!quis ostendit vobis fugere a ventura ira?Who told you to flee from the approaching wrath?

Facite ergo fructus dignos pœnitentiæ,So then, produce fruits worthy of repentance.et ne cœperitis dicere:And do not begin to say,Patrem habemus Abraham.‘We have Abraham as our father.’Dico enim vobis quia potens est Deus de lapidibus istis suscitare filios Abrahæ.For I tell you that God has the power to raise up sons to Abraham from these stones.

Jam enim securis ad radicem arborum posita est.For even now the axe has been placed at the root of the trees.Omnis ergo arbor non faciens fructum bonum,Therefore, excidetur, every tree that does not produce good fruit shall be cut downet in ignem mittetur.and cast into the fire.”

Et interrogabant eum turbæ,And the crowed was questioning him, dicentes:saying,Quid ergo faciemus?“What then should we do?”

Respondens autem dicebat illis:But in response, he said to them:Qui habet duas tunicas, det non habenti:“Whoever has two coats, let him give to those who do not have.et qui habet escas,And whoever has food, similiter faciat.let him act similarly.”

Venerunt autem et publicani ut baptizarentur,Now the tax collectors also came to be baptized,et dixerunt ad illum:and they said to him,Magister,“Teacher, quid faciemus?what should we do?”

At ille dixit ad eos:But he said to them,Nihil amplius, quam quod constitutum est vobis, faciatis.“You should do nothing more than what has been appointed to you.”

Interrogabant autem eum et milites,Then the soldiers also questioned him, dicentes:saying,Quid faciemus et nos?“And what should we do?”Et ait illis:And he said to them:Neminem concutiatis,“You should strike no one, neque calumniam faciatis:and you should not make false accusations.et contenti estote stipendiis vestris. And be content with your pay.”

Existimante autem populo,Now all were thinking about John in their hearts,et cogitantibus omnibus in cordibus suis de Joanne, ne forte ipse esset Christus, and the people were supposing that perhaps he might be the Christ.

respondit Joannes,John responded by saying to everyone:dicens omnibus:“Indeed,Ego quidem aqua baptizo vos:I baptize you with water.veniet autem fortior me,But there will arrive one stronger than me,cujus non sum dignus solvere corrigiam calceamentorum ejus:the laces of whose shoes I am not worthy to loosen.ipse vos baptizabit in Spiritu SanctoHe will baptize you in the Holy Spirit,et igni:and with fire.

cujus ventilabrum in manu ejus,His winnowing fan is in his hand.et purgabit aream suam,And he will purify his threshing floor.et congregabit triticum in horreum suum,And he will gather the wheat into the barn.paleas autem comburet igni inextinguibili. But the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

Multa quidem et alia exhortans evangelizabat populo.Indeed, he also proclaimed many other things, exhorting the people.

Herodes autem tetrarcha cum corriperetur ab illo de Herodiade uxore fratris sui,But Herod the tetrarch, when he was corrected by him concerning Herodias, his brother’s wife,et de omnibus malis quæ fecit Herodes, and concerning all the evils that Herod had done,

adjecitadded this also,et hoc super omnia, above all else:et inclusit Joannem in carcere.that he confined John to prison.

Factum est autem cum baptizaretur omnis populus,Now it happened that, when all the people were being baptized,et Jesu baptizato,Jesus was baptized;et orante, apertum est cælum:and as he was praying, heaven was opened.

et descendit Spiritus Sanctus corporali specie sicut columba in ipsum:And the Holy Spirit, in a corporal appearance like a dove, descended upon him.et vox de cælo facta est:And a voice came from heaven:Tu es filius meus dilectus,“You are my beloved Son. In you,in te complacui mihi.I am well pleased.”
