Factum est autem in diebus illis,And it happened in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, exiit edictum a Cæsare Augusto ut describeretur universus orbis.so that the whole world would be enrolled.

Hæc descriptio prima facta est a præside Syriæ Cyrino:This was the first enrollment; it was made by the ruler of Syria, Quirinius.

et ibant omnes ut profiterentur singuli in suam civitatem. And all went to be declared, each one to his own city.

Ascendit autemThen Joseph also ascended from Galilee,et Joseph a Galilæa de civitate Nazareth in Judæam,from the city of Nazareth,in civitatem David, into Judea,quæ vocatur Bethlehem:to the city of David,eo quod esset de domowhich is called Bethlehem,et familia David, because he was of the house and family of David,

ut profiteretur cum Maria desponsata sibi uxore prægnante.in order to be declared, with Mary his espoused wife, who was with child.

Factum est autem,Then it happened that, cum essent ibi, while they were there, impleti sunt dies ut pareret.the days were completed, so that she would give birth.

Et peperit filium suum primogenitum,And she brought forth her firstborn son.et pannis eum involvit,And she wrapped him in swaddling clotheset reclinavit eum in præsepio:and laid him in a manger, quia non erat eis locus in diversorio.because there was no room for them at the inn.

Et pastores erant in regione eadem vigilantes,And there were shepherds in the same region,et custodientes vigilias noctis super gregem suum.being vigilant and keeping watch in the night over their flock.

Et ecce angelus Domini stetit juxta illos,And behold, an Angel of the Lord stood near them,et claritas Dei circumfulsit illos, and the brightness of God shone around them,et timuerunt timore magno.and they were struck with a great fear.

Et dixit illis angelus:And the Angel said to them:Nolite timere:“Do not be afraid.ecce enim evangelizo vobis gaudium magnum,For, behold, I proclaim to you a great joy, quod erit omni populo:which will be for all the people.

quia natus est vobis hodie Salvator, qui est Christus Dominus,For today a Savior has been born for you in the city of David:in civitate David.he is Christ the Lord.

Et hoc vobis signum:And this will be a sign for you:invenietis infantem pannis involutum, you will find the infant wrapped in swaddling clotheset positum in præsepio.and lying in a manger.”

Et subito facta est cum angelo multitudo militiæ cælestis laudantium Deum,And suddenly there was with the Angel a multitude of the celestial army,et dicentium:praising God and saying,

Gloria in altissimis Deo,“Glory to God in the highest,et in terra pax hominibus bonæ voluntatis.and on earth peace to men of good will.”

Et factum est,And it happened that,ut discesserunt ab eis angeli in cælum:when the Angels had departed from them into heaven, pastores loquebantur ad invicem:the shepherds said to one another,Transeamus usque Bethlehem,“Let us cross over to Bethlehemet videamus hoc verbum, and see this word, quod factum est, which has happened, quod Dominus ostendit nobis.which the Lord has revealed to us.”

Et venerunt festinantes:And they went quickly.et invenerunt Mariam,And they found Maryet Joseph, and Joseph;et infantem positum in præsepio.and the infant was lying in a manger.

Videntes autem cognoverunt de verbo, quod dictum erat illis de puero hoc. Then, upon seeing this, they understood the word that had been spoken to them about this boy.

Et omnes qui audierunt, mirati sunt:And all who heard it were amazed by this,et de his quæ dicta erant a pastoribus ad ipsos.and by those things which were told to them by the shepherds.

Maria autem conservabat omnia verba hæc,But Mary kept all these words, conferens in corde suo.pondering them in her heart.

Et reversi sunt pastores glorificantes et laudantes Deum in omnibus quæ audierant et viderant,And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, sicut dictum est ad illos.just as it was told to them.

Et postquam consummati sunt dies octo,And after eight days were ended,ut circumcideretur puer,so that the boy would be circumcised, vocatum est nomen ejus Jesus, his name was called JESUS,quod vocatum est ab angelo priusquam in utero conciperetur.just as he was called by the Angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Et postquam impleti sunt dies purgationis ejus secundum legem Moysi,And after the days of her purification were fulfilled, according to the law of Moses, tulerunt illum in Jerusalem, they brought him to Jerusalem,ut sisterent eum Domino,in order to present him to the Lord,

sicut scriptum est in lege Domini:just as it is written in the law of the Lord,Quia omne masculinum adaperiens vulvam, sanctum Domino vocabitur:“For every male opening the womb shall be called holy to the Lord,”

et ut darent hostiam secundum quod dictum est in lege Domini, and in order to offer a sacrifice, par turturum, according to what is said in the law of the Lord, aut duos pullos columbarum.“a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”

Et ecce homo erat in Jerusalem,And behold, cui nomen Simeon, there was a man in Jerusalem,et homo iste justus, whose name was Simeon,et timoratus, and this man was just and God-fearing,exspectans consolationem Israël:awaiting the consolation of Israel.et Spiritus Sanctus erat in eo.And the Holy Spirit was with him.

Et responsum acceperat a Spiritu Sancto,And he had received an answer from the Holy Spirit:non visurum se mortem, nisi prius videret Christum Domini.that he would not see his own death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord.

Et venit in spiritu in templum. And he went with the Spirit to the temple.Et cum inducerent puerum Jesum parentes ejus,And when the child Jesus was brought in by his parents,ut facerent secundum consuetudinem legis pro eo,in order to act on his behalf according to the custom of the law,

et ipse accepit eum in ulnas suas:he also took him up,et benedixit Deum, into his arms,et dixit:and he blessed God and said:

Nunc dimittis servum tuum Domine,“Now you may dismiss your servant in peace, secundum verbum tuum in pace:O Lord, according to your word.

quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum,For my eyes have seen your salvation,

quod parasti ante faciem omnium populorum:which you have prepared before the face of all peoples:

lumen ad revelationem gentium, the light of revelation to the nationset gloriam plebis tuæ Israël.and the glory of your people Israel.”

Et erat pater ejusAnd his father and mother were wondering over these things,et mater mirantes super his quæ dicebantur de illo.which were spoken about him.

Et benedixit illis Simeon,And Simeon blessed them,et dixit ad Mariam matrem ejus:and he said to his mother Mary:Ecce positus est hic in ruinam“Behold,et in resurrectionem multorum in Israël,this one has been set for the ruin and for the resurrection of many in Israel,et in signum cui contradicetur:and as a sign which will be contradicted.

et tuam ipsius animam pertransibit gladius ut revelentur ex multis cordibus cogitationes. And a sword will pass through your own soul, so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

Et erat Anna prophetissa,And there was a prophetess, Anna, filia Phanuel,a daughter of Phanuel,de tribu Aser: hæc processerat in diebus multis, from the tribe of Asher. She was very advanced in years,et vixerat cum viro suo annis septem a virginitate sua.and she had lived with her husband for seven years from her virginity.

Et hæc vidua usque ad annos octoginta quatuor:And then she was a widow,quæ non discedebat de templo, even to her eighty-fourth year.jejuniisAnd without departing from the temple,et obsecrationibus serviens nocteshe was a servant to fasting and prayer,ac die.night and day.

Et hæc, ipsa hora superveniens,And entering at the same hour, confitebatur Domino:she confessed to the Lord.et loquebatur de illo omnibus, qui exspectabant redemptionem Israël.And she spoke about him to all who were awaiting the redemption of Israel.

Et ut perfecerunt omnia secundum legem Domini,And after they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, reversi sunt in Galilæam in civitatem suam Nazareth.they returned to Galilee, to their city, Nazareth.

Puer autem crescebat,Now the child grew,et confortabatur plenus sapientia:and he was strengthened with the fullness of wisdom.et gratia Dei erat in illo. And the grace of God was in him.

Et ibant parentes ejus per omnes annos in Jerusalem,And his parents went every year to Jerusalem,in die solemni Paschæ.at the time of the solemnity of Passover.

Et cum factus esset annorum duodecim,And when he had become twelve years old, ascendentibus illis Jerosolymam secundum consuetudinem diei festi, they ascended to Jerusalem, according to the custom of the feast day.

consummatisque diebus,And having completed the days, cum redirent, when they returned, remansit puer Jesus in Jerusalem, the boy Jesus remained in Jerusalem.et non cognoverunt parentes ejus. And his parents did not realize this.

Existimantes autem illum esse in comitatu,But,venerunt iter diei, supposing that he was in the company,et requirebant eum inter cognatosthey went a day’s journey,et notos.seeking him among their relatives and acquaintances.

Et non invenientes,And not finding him, regressi sunt in Jerusalem, they returned to Jerusalem, requirentes eum.seeking him.

Et factum est,And it happened that, post triduum invenerunt illum in templo sedentem in medio doctorum, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, audientem illos, et interrogantem eos.listening to them and questioning them.

Stupebant autem omnes qui eum audiebant,But all who listened to him were astonished over his prudencesuper prudentia et responsis ejus.and his responses.

Et videntes admirati sunt. And upon seeing him, they wondered.Et dixit mater ejus ad illum:And his mother said to him: “Son,Fili, quid fecisti nobis sic?why have you acted this way toward us?ecce pater tuus et ego dolentes quærebamus te.Behold, your father and I were seeking you in sorrow.”

Et ait ad illos:And he said to them:Quid est quod me quærebatis?“How is it that you were seeking me?nesciebatis quia in his quæ Patris mei sunt, oportet me esse? For did you not know that it is necessary for me to be in these things which are of my Father?”

Et ipsi non intellexerunt verbum quod locutus est ad eos.And they did not understand the word that he spoke to them.

Et descendit cum eis,And he descended with themet venit Nazareth:and went to Nazareth.et erat subditus illis. And he was subordinate to them.Et mater ejus conservabat omnia verba hæc in corde suo.And his mother kept all these words in her heart.
