Et factum est deinceps,And it happened afterwards that he was making a journey through the citieset ipse iter faciebat per civitates, and towns,et castella prædicans, preachinget evangelizans regnum Dei:and evangelizing the kingdom of God.et duodecim cum illo,And the twelve were with him,

et mulieres aliquæ,along with certain women who had been healed of evil spiritsquæ erant curatæ a spiritibus malignis et infirmantibus:and infirmities:Maria,Mary,quæ vocatur Magdalene, who is called Magdalene,de qua septem dæmonia exierant, from whom seven demons had departed,

et Joanna uxor Chusæ procuratoris Herodis, and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward,et Susanna, and Susanna,et aliæ multæ,and many other women,quæ ministrabant ei de facultatibus suis.who were ministering to him from their resources.

Cum autem turba plurima convenirent,Then,et de civitatibus properarent ad eum, when a very numerous crowd was gathering together and hurrying from the cities to him, dixit per similitudinem:he spoke using a comparison:

Exiit qui seminat, seminare semen suum.“The sower went out to sow his seed.Et dum seminat,And as he sowed, aliud cecidit secus viam, some fell beside the way;et conculcatum est, et volucres cæli comederunt illud.and it was trampled and the birds of the air devoured it.

Et aliud cecidit supra petram:And some fell upon rock; and having sprung up,et natum aruit,it withered away, quia non habebat humorem.because it had no moisture.

Et aliud cecidit inter spinas,And some fell among thorns;et simul exortæ spinæ suffocaverunt illud.and the thorns, rising up with it, suffocated it.

Et aliud cecidit in terram bonam:And some fell upon good soil; and having sprung up,et ortum fecit fructum centuplum.it produced fruit one hundredfold.”Hæc dicens clamabat:As he said these things,Qui habet aures audiendi,he cried out, “Whoever has ears to hear, audiat.let him hear.”

Interrogabant autem eum discipuli ejus, quæ esset hæc parabola. Then his disciples questioned him as to what this parable might mean.

Quibus ipse dixit:And he said to them:Vobis datum est nosse mysterium regni Dei,“To you it has been given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God.ceteris autem in parabolis:But to the rest, it is in parables,ut videntes non videant,so that: seeing, they may not perceive,et audientes non intelligant.and hearing, they may not understand.

Est autem hæc parabola:Now the parable is this:Semen est verbum Dei.The seed is the word of God.

Qui autem secus viam, hi sunt qui audiunt:And those beside the way are those who hear it,deinde venit diabolus, et tollit verbum de corde eorum, but then the devil comes and takes the word from their heart,ne credentes salvi fiant.lest by believing it they may be saved.

Nam qui supra petram,Now those upon rock are those who,qui cum audierint, when they hear it,cum gaudio suscipiunt verbum:accept the word with joy,et hi radices non habent:but these have no roots.qui ad tempus credunt,So they believe for a time,et in tempore tentationis recedunt.but in a time of testing, they fall away.

Quod autem in spinas cecidit: hi sunt qui audierunt,And those which fell among thorns are those who have heard it,et a sollicitudinibus, but as they go along,et divitiis, et voluptatibus vitæ euntes, suffocantur, they are suffocated by the concerns and riches and pleasures of this life,et non referunt fructum.and so they do not yield fruit.

Quod autem in bonam terram:But those which were on good soil are those who,hi sunt qui in corde bonoupon hearing the word with a good and noble heart,et optimo audientes verbum retinent, retain it,et fructum afferunt in patientia.and they bring forth fruit in patience.

Nemo autem lucernam accendens,Now no one, lighting a candle, operit eam vase, aut subtus lectum ponit:covers it with a container, or sets it under a bed.sed supra candelabrum ponit,Instead, he places it on a lampstand,ut intrantes videant lumen.so that those who enter may see the light.

Non est enim occultum,For there is nothing secret, quod non manifestetur:which will not be made clear, nec absconditum, nor is there anything hidden, quod non cognoscatur, which will not be knownet in palam veniat.and be brought into plain sight.

Videte ergo quomodo audiatis? Therefore,Qui enim habet, take care how you listen.dabitur illi:For whoever has,et quicumque non habet,it will be given to him;etiam quod putat se habere, and whoever does not have, auferetur ab illo.even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.”

Venerunt autem ad illum mater et fratres ejus,Then his mother and brothers came to him;et non poterant adire eum præ turba.but they were not able to go to him because of the crowd.

Et nuntiatum est illi:And it was reported to him,Mater tua et fratres tui stant foris,“Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, volentes te videre.wanting to see you.”

Qui respondens,And in response, dixit ad eos:he said to them,Mater mea et fratres mei hi sunt, qui verbum Dei audiunt et faciunt.“My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”

Factum est autem in una dierum:Now it happened,et ipse ascendit in naviculam,on a certain day,et discipuli ejus, that he climbed into a little boat with his disciples.et ait ad illos:And he said to them,Transfretemus trans stagnum.“Let us make a crossing over the lake.”Et ascenderunt. And they embarked.

Et navigantibus illis,And as they were sailing, obdormivit,he slept.et descendit procella venti in stagnum,And a windstorm descended over the lake.et complebantur,And they were taking on wateret periclitabantur.and were in danger.

Accedentes autem suscitaverunt eum,Then, drawing near, they awakened him, dicentes:saying, “Teacher,Præceptor, perimus.we are perishing.”At ille surgens,But as he rose up,increpavit ventum, et tempestatem aquæ,he rebuked the wind and the raging water,et cessavit:and they ceased.et facta est tranquillitas. And a tranquility occurred.

Dixit autem illis:Then he said to them,Ubi est fides vestra?“Where is your faith?”Qui timentes,And they, mirati sunt ad invicem, being afraid, dicentes:were amazed,Quis putas hic est, saying to one another, quia et ventis,“Who do you think this is,et mari imperat,so that he commands both wind and sea,et obediunt ei?and they obey him?”

Et navigaverunt ad regionem Gerasenorum,And they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes,quæ est contra Galilæam.which is opposite Galilee.

Et cum egressus esset ad terram,And when he had gone out to the land, occurrit illi vir quidam,a certain man met him,qui habebat dæmonium jam temporibus multis, who had now had a demon for a long time.et vestimento non induebatur,And he did not wear clothes, neque in domo manebat, nor did he stay in a house, sed in monumentis.but among the sepulchers.

Is,And when he saw Jesus,ut vidit Jesum,he fell down before him.procidit ante illum:And crying out in a loud voice,et exclamans voce magna,he said:dixit:“What is there between meQuid mihi et tibi est,and you,Jesu Fili Dei Altissimi?Jesus, obsecro te,Son of the Most High God?ne me torqueas.I beg you not to torture me.”

Præcipiebat enim spiritui immundo ut exiret ab homine. For he was ordering the unclean spirit to depart from the man.Multis enim temporibus arripiebat illum,For on many occasions, it would seize him,et vinciebatur catenis, et compedibus custoditus.and he was bound with chains and held by fetters.Et ruptis vinculis agebatur a dæmonio in deserta. But breaking the chains, he was driven by the demon into deserted places.

Interrogavit autem illum Jesus,Then Jesus questioned him, dicens:saying,Quod tibi nomen est?“What is your name?”At ille dixit:And he said,Legio:“Legion,”quia intraverant dæmonia multa in eum.because many demons had entered into him.

Et rogabant illum ne imperaret illis ut in abyssum irent. And they petitioned him not to order them to go into the abyss.

Erat autem ibi grex porcorum multorum pascentium in monte:And in that place, there was a herd of many swine, pasturing on the mountain.et rogabant eum, ut permitteret eis in illos ingredi. And they petitioned him to permit them to enter into them.Et permisit illis. And he permitted them.

Exierunt ergo dæmonia ab homine,Therefore, the demons departed from the man,et intraverunt in porcos:and they entered into the swine.et impetu abiit grex per præceps in stagnum,And the herd rushed violently down a precipice into the lake,et suffocatus est.and they were drowned.

Quod ut viderunt factum qui pascebant, fugerunt,And when those who were pasturing them had seen this,et nuntiaverunt in civitatem et in villas.they fled and reported it in the city and the villages.

Exierunt autem videre quod factum est,Then they went out to see what was happening,et venerunt ad Jesum, and they came to Jesus.et invenerunt hominem sedentem,And they found the man,a quo dæmonia exierant, from whom the demons had departed, vestitum ac sana mente, sitting at his feet,ad pedes ejus, clothed as well as in a sane mind,et timuerunt.and they were afraid.

Nuntiaverunt autem illis et qui viderant, quomodo sanus factus esset a legione:Then those who had seen this also reported to them how he had been healed from the legion.

et rogaverunt illum omnis multitudo regionis Gerasenorum ut discederet ab ipsis:And the entire multitude from the region of the Gerasenes pleaded with him to depart from them.quia magno timore tenebantur. For they were seized by a great fear.Ipse autem ascendens navim,Then, climbing into the boat, reversus est.he went back again.

Et rogabat illum vir, a quo dæmonia exierant,And the man from whom the demons had departed pleaded with him,ut cum eo esset. Dimisit autem eum Jesus,so that he might be with him. But Jesus sent him away, dicens:saying,

Redi in domum tuam,“Return to your houseet narra quanta tibi fecit Deus.and explain to them what great things God has done for you.”Et abiit per universam civitatem,And he traveled through the entire city,prædicans quanta illi fecisset Jesus.preaching about the great things that Jesus had done for him.

Factum est autem cum rediisset Jesus,Now it happened that, when Jesus had returned, excepit illum turba:the crowd received him.erunt enim omnes exspectantes eum.For they were all waiting for him.

Et ecce venit vir,And behold, a man came, cui nomen Jairus, whose name was Jairus,et ipse princeps synagogæ erat:and he was a leader of the synagogue.et cecidit ad pedes Jesu, rogans eum ut intraret in domum ejus,And he fell down at the feet of Jesus, asking him to enter into his house.

quia unica filia erat ei fere annorum duodecim,For he had an only daughter, nearly twelve years old, and she was dying.et hæc moriebatur. And it happened that,Et contigit, dum iret,as he was going there,a turba comprimebatur.he was hemmed in by the crowd.

Et mulier quædam erat in fluxu sanguinis ab annis duodecim,And there was a certain woman, with a flow of blood for twelve years,quæ in medicos erogaverat omnem substantiam suam, nec ab ullo potuit curari:who had paid out all her substance on physicians, and she was unable to be cured by any of them.

accessit retro,She approached him from behind,et tetigit fimbriam vestimenti ejus:and she touched the hem of his garment.et confestim stetit fluxus sanguinis ejus. And at once the flow of her blood stopped.

Et ait Jesus:And Jesus said,Quis est,“Who is it that touched me?”qui me tetigit? But as everyone was denying it,Negantibus autem omnibus,Peter, dixit Petrus, and those who were with him,et qui cum illo erant:said:Præceptor,“Teacher, turbæ te comprimunt, the crowd hems you inet affligunt, and presses upon you,et dicis:and yet you say,Quis me tetigit?‘Who touched me?’”

Et dicit Jesus:And Jesus said:Tetigit me aliquis:“Someone has touched me.nam ego novi virtutem de me exiisse. For I know that power has gone out from me.”

Videns autem mulier,Then the woman, quia non latuit, upon seeing that she was not hidden, tremens venit, came forward,et procidit ante pedes ejus:trembling,et ob quam causam tetigerit eum,and she fell down before his feet.indicavit coram omni populo:And she declared before all the people the reason that she had touched him,et quemadmodum confestim sanata sit.and how she had been immediately healed.

At ipse dixit ei:But he said to her:Filia,“Daughter, fides tua salvam te fecit:your faith has saved you.vade in pace.Go in peace.”

Adhuc illo loquente,While he was still speaking, venit quidam ad principem synagogæ,someone came to the ruler of the synagogue, dicens ei:saying to him:Quia mortua est filia tua,“Your daughter is dead.noli vexare illum.Do not trouble him.”

Jesus autem,Then Jesus, audito hoc verbo, upon hearing this word, respondit patri puellæ:replied to the father of the girl:Noli timere,“Do not be afraid.crede tantum,Only believe,et salva erit.and she will be saved.”

Et cum venisset domum,And when he had arrived at the house, non permisit intrare secum quemquam,he would not permit anyone to enter with him, nisi Petrum, except Peteret Jacobum, and Jameset Joannem, and John,et patrem, and the fatheret matrem puellæ.and mother of the girl.

Flebant autem omnes,Now all were weepinget plangebant illam.and mourning for her.At ille dixit:But he said:Nolite flere:“Do not weep.non est mortua puella,The girl is not dead, sed dormit.but only sleeping.”

Et deridebant eum,And they derided him, scientes quod mortua esset.knowing that she had died.

Ipse autem tenens manum ejus clamavit,But he, taking her by the hand, cried out, dicens: Puella, saying, “Little girl,surge.arise.”

Et reversus est spiritus ejus,And her spirit returned,et surrexit continuo.and she immediately rose up.Et jussit illi dari manducare. And he ordered them to give her something to eat.

Et stupuerunt parentes ejus,And her parents were stupefied.quibus præcepit ne alicui dicerent quod factum erat. And he instructed them not to tell anyone what had happened.
