3et pertransiit usque ad fines terræ:And he passed through even to the ends of the earth.et accepit spolia multitudinis gentium,And he received the spoils of many nations.et siluit terra in conspectu ejus.And the earth was silenced in his sight.
4Et congregavit virtutem,And he gathered together power,et exercitum fortem nimis:and an exceedingly strong army.et exaltatum est,And he was exalted,et elevatum cor ejus:and his heart was lifted up.
5et obtinuit regiones gentium,And he captured the regions of nationset tyrannos:and of sovereign leaders,et facti sunt illi in tributum.and they became tributaries to him.
6Et post hæc decidit in lectum,And after these things, he fell down on his bed,et cognovit quia moreretur.and he knew that he would die.
7Et vocavit pueros suos nobiles,And he called his servants,qui secum erant nutriti a juventute:nobles who were raised with him from his youth.et divisit illis regnum suum,And he divided his kingdom to them,cum adhuc viveret.while he was still alive.
8Et regnavit Alexander annis duodecim,And Alexander reigned twelve years,et mortuus est.and then he died.
9Et obtinuerunt pueri ejus regnum,And his servants obtained his kingdom,unusquisque in loco suo:each one in his place.
10et imposuerunt omnes sibi diademata post mortem ejus,And they all put diadems on themselves after his death,et filii eorum post eos annis multis,and their sons after them, for many years;et multiplicata sunt mala in terra.and evils were multiplied on the earth.
11Et exiit ex eis radix peccatrix,And there went forth from among them a sinful root,Antiochus illustris,Antiochus the illustrious,filius Antiochi regis,the son of king Antiochus,qui fuerat Romæ obses:who had been a hostage at Rome.et regnavit in anno centesimo trigesimo septimo regni Græcorum.And he reigned in the one hundred and thirty-seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks.
12In diebus illis, exierunt ex Israël filii iniqui,In those days, there went forth from Israel sons of iniquity,et suaserunt multis, dicentes:and they persuaded many,Eamus,saying:et disponamus testamentum cum gentibus, quæ circa nos sunt:“Let us go and negotiate a covenant with the Gentiles that are all around us.quia ex quo recessimus ab eis,For since we have withdrawn from them,invenerunt nos multa mala.many evils have found us.”
13Et bonus visus est sermo in oculis eorum.And the word seemed good in their eyes.
14Et destinaverunt aliqui de populo,And some of the people determined to do this,et abierunt ad regem:and they went to the king.et dedit illis potestatem ut facerent justitiam gentium.And he gave them the power to act according to the justice of the Gentiles.
15Et ædificaverunt gymnasium in Jerosolymis secundum leges nationum:And they built a sports arena in Jerusalem, according to the laws of the Nations.
16et fecerunt sibi præputia,And they made themselves uncircumcised,et recesserunt a testamento sancto,and they withdrew from the holy covenant,et juncti sunt nationibus,and they were joined to the nations,et venundati sunt ut facerent malum.and they were sold into evil-doing.
17Et paratum est regnum in conspectu Antiochi,And the kingdom was ready in the sight of Antiochus,et cœpit regnare in terra Ægypti ut regnaret super duo regna.and he began to reign over the land of Egypt, so that he might reign over two kingdoms.
18Et intravit in Ægyptum in multitudine gravi,And he entered into Egypt with an oppressive multitude,in curribus,with swift chariots,et elephantis,and elephants,et equitibus,and horsemen,et copiosa navium multitudine:and a great abundance of ships.
19et constituit bellum adversus Ptolemæum regem Ægypti,And he appointed a war against Ptolemy, the king of Egypt,et veritus est Ptolemæus a facie ejus,and Ptolemy was filled with dread before his face,et fugit,and he fled,et ceciderunt vulnerati multi.and many fell down wounded.
20Et comprehendit civitates munitas in terra Ægypti,And he took hold of the fortified cities in the land of Egypt,et accepit spolia terræ Ægypti.and he received the spoils of the land of Egypt.
21Et convertit Antiochus,And Antiochus turned back,postquam percussit Ægyptum in centesimoafter he struck Egypt,et quadragesimo tertio anno:in the one hundred and forty-third year,et ascendit ad Israël,and he ascended against Israel.
22et ascendit Jerosolymam in multitudine gravi.And he ascended to Jerusalem, with an oppressive multitude.
23Et intravit in sanctificationem cum superbia,And he entered into the sanctuary with arrogance,et accepit altare aureum,and he took the golden altar,et candelabrum luminis,and the lampstand of light,et universa vasa ejus,and all the vessels,et mensam propositionis,and the table for the bread of the Presence,et libatoria,and the vessels of libation,et phialas,and the vials,et mortariola aurea,and the little mortars of gold,et velum,and the veil,et coronas,and the crowns,et ornamentum aureum,and the golden ornament,quod in facie templi erat:which was at the face of the temple.et comminuit omnia.And he crushed them all.
24Et accepit argentum,And he took the silveret aurum,and gold,et vasa concupiscibilia:and the precious vessels,et accepit thesauros occultos,and he took the hidden treasures,quos invenit:which he found.et sublatis omnibus,And having taken all these things away,abiit in terram suam.he departed into his own land.
25Et fecit cædem hominum,And he caused a massacre of men,et locutus est in superbia magna.and he was speaking with great arrogance.
26Et factus est planctus magnus in Israël,And there was great wailing in Israelet in omni loco eorum:and in all of their places.
27et ingemuerunt principes et seniores;And the leaders and elders mourned,virgines et juvenes infirmati sunt:and the virgins and young men became weak,et speciositas mulierum immutata est.and the splendor of the women was changed.
28Omnis maritus sumpsit lamentum,Every bridegroom took up lamentation,et quæ sedebant in thoro maritali, lugebant:and those who sat in the marriage bed mourned.
29et commota est terra super habitantes in ea,And the land shook on behalf of the inhabitants in it,et universa domus Jacob induit confusionem.and the entire house of Jacob was clothed with confusion.
30Et post duos annos dierum,And after two years of days,misit rex principem tributorum in civitates Juda,the king sent the prince of his tributes to the cities of Judah,et venit Jerusalem cum turba magna.and he came to Jerusalem with a great crowd.
31Et locutus est ad eos verba pacifica in dolo:And he spoke peaceful words to them, in deceitfulness;et crediderunt ei.and they believed him.
32Et irruit super civitatem repente,And he rushed upon the city suddenly,et percussit eam plaga magna,and he struck it with a great scourging,et perdidit populum multum ex Israël.and he destroyed many of the people of Israel.
33Et accepit spolia civitatis:And he took the spoils of the city,et succendit eam igni,and he burned it with fire,et destruxit domos ejus,and he destroyed its houseset muros ejus in circuitu:and the walls around it.
34et captivas duxerunt mulieres,And they led away the women as captives,et natos et pecora possederunt.and they possessed the children and the cattle.
35Et ædificaverunt civitatem David muro magno et firmo,And they built up the city of David with a great and strong wall,et turribus firmis,and with strong towers,et facta est illis in arcem:and it became a stronghold for them.
36et posuerunt illic gentem peccatricem viros iniquos,And they set up in that place a sinful people,et convaluerunt in ea:wicked men,et posuerunt arma,and together they grew strong in it.et escas,And they stored up weapons and provisions.et congregaverunt spolia Jerusalem:And they gathered together the spoils of Jerusalem,
37et reposuerunt illic:and deposited them in that place.et facti sunt in laqueum magnum.And they became a great snare.
38Et factum est hoc ad insidias sanctificationi,And this became a place of ambush against the sanctuaryet in diabolum malum in Israël:and a diabolical evil in Israel.
39et effuderunt sanguinem innocentem per circuitum sanctificationis,And they poured out innocent blood around the sanctuary,et contaminaverunt sanctificationem.and they contaminated the sanctuary.
40Et fugerunt habitatores Jerusalem propter eos,And the inhabitants of Jerusalem fled because of them,et facta est habitatio exterorum,and the city became the dwelling place of outsiders,et facta est extera semini suo,and she became a stranger to her own offspring,et nati ejus reliquerunt eam.and her own children abandoned her.
41Sanctificatio ejus desolata est sicut solitudo;Her sanctuary was desolate, like a place of solitude,dies festi ejus conversi sunt in luctum,her feast days were turned into mourning,sabbata ejus in opprobrium,her Sabbaths into disgrace,honores ejus in nihilum.her honors into nothing.
42Secundum gloriam ejus multiplicata est ignominia ejus,Her shame was multiplied according to her glory,et sublimitas ejus conversa est in luctum.and her loftiness was turned into lamentation.
43Et scripsit rex Antiochus omni regno suo ut esset omnis populus unus:And king Antiochus wrote to all his kingdom, that all the people must be one,et relinqueret unusquisque legem suam.and that each one should relinquish his own law.
44Et consenserunt omnes gentes secundum verbum regis Antiochi:And all Gentiles consented, according to the word of king Antiochus.
45et multi ex Israël consenserunt servituti ejus,And many out of Israel consented to his servitude,et sacrificaverunt idolis,and they sacrificed to idols,et coinquinaverunt sabbatum.and they polluted the Sabbath.
46Et misit rex libros per manus nuntiorum in Jerusalem,And the king sent letters, by the hand of messengers,et in omnes civitates Juda,to Jerusalem and to all the cities of Judah:ut sequerentur leges gentium terræ,that they should follow the law of the Nations of the earth,
47et prohiberent holocausta et sacrificia, et placationes fieri in templo Dei,and that they should prohibit holocausts and sacrifices and atonements to be made in the temple of God,
48et prohiberent celebrari sabbatum,and that they should prohibit the celebration of the Sabbathet dies solemnes:and the solemn days.
49et jussit coinquinari sancta,And he ordered the holy places to be defiled,et sanctum populum Israël.along with the holy people of Israel.
50Et jussit ædificari aras,And he ordered altars to be built,et templa,and temples,et idola,and idols,et immolari carnes suillas,and he ordered the immolation of the flesh of swineet pecora communia,and of unclean cattle,
51et relinquere filios suos incircumcisos,and that they should leave their sons uncircumcised,et coinquinari animas eorum in omnibus immundis,and defile their souls with all that is unclean,et abominationibus,and with abominations,ita ut obliviscerentur legem,so that they would forget the lawet immutarent omnes justificationes Dei:and would alter all the justifications of God,
52et quicumque non fecissent secundum verbum regis Antiochi, morerentur.and that whoever would not act according to the word of king Antiochus should be put to death.
53Secundum omnia verba hæc scripsit omni regno suo:According to all these words, he wrote to all his kingdom.et præposuit principes populo,And he appointed leaders over the people,qui hæc fieri cogerent.who would compel them to do these things.
54Et jusserunt civitatibus Juda sacrificare.And these ordered the cities of Judah to sacrifice.
55Et congregati sunt multi de populo ad eos qui dereliquerant legem Domini,And many from the people, who had abandoned the law of the Lord, were gathered together by them.et fecerunt mala super terram:And they committed evils upon the land.
56et effugaverunt populum Israël in abditis,And they drove the people of Israel into hidinget in absconditis fugitivorum locis.and into the secret places of fugitives.
57Die quintadecima mensis Casleu,On the fifteenth day of the month of Kislev,quinto et quadragesimo et centesimo anno,in the one hundred and forty-fifth year,ædificavit rex Antiochus abominandum idolum desolationis super altare Dei,king Antiochus set up the abominable idol of desolation on the altar of God,et per universas civitates Juda in circuitu ædificaverunt aras:and they built altars throughout all the surrounding cities of Judah.
58et ante januas domorum et in plateis incendebant thura,And they burned frankincense,et sacrificabant:and they sacrificed before the doors of houses and in the streets.
59et libros legis Dei combusserunt igni,And they cut up the books of the law of Godscindentes eos:and destroyed them with fire.
60et apud quemcumque inveniebantur libri testamenti Domini,And all those who were found with the books of the testament of the Lord,et quicumque observabat legem Domini,and whoever observed the law of the Lord,secundum edictum regis trucidabant eum.they butchered, according to the edict of the king.
61In virtute sua faciebant hæc populo Israël,By their power, they did these things to the people of Israel,qui inveniebatur in omni mense et mense in civitatibus.as they were discovered in the cities, month after month.
62Et quinta et vigesima die mensis sacrificabant super aram,And on the twenty-fifth day of the month,quæ erat contra altare.they sacrificed on that altar which was opposite the high altar.
63Et mulieres, quæ circumcidebant filios suos,And the women who circumcised their sons were butchered,trucidabantur secundum jussum regis Antiochi,according to the order of king Antiochus.
64et suspendebant pueros a cervicibus per universas domos eorum:And they suspended the children by their necks in all their houses,et eos, qui circumciderant illos,and those who had circumcised them,trucidabant.they butchered.
65Et multi de populo Israël definierunt apud se, ut non manducarent immunda:And many of the people of Israel decided within themselves that they would not eat unclean things.et elegerunt magis mori,And they chose to die,quam cibis coinquinari immundis:rather than to be defiled with unclean foods.
66et noluerunt infringere legem Dei sanctam,And they were not willing to infringe upon the holy law of God,et trucidati sunt:and they were butchered.
67et facta est ira magna super populum valde.And there was a very great wrath upon the people.
