Et rex Ægypti congregavit exercitum,And the king of Egypt gathered together an army, sicut arena quæ est circa oram maris, like the sand that is along the shore of the sea,et naves multas:and many ships.et quærebat obtinere regnum Alexandri dolo,And he sought to obtain the kingdom of Alexander by deceit,et addere illud regno suo.and to add it to his own kingdom.

Et exiit in Syriam verbis pacificis,And he departed into Syria with words of peace,et aperiebant ei civitates, and they opened the cities to him,et occurrebant ei:and they were meeting with him.quia mandaverat Alexander rex exire ei obviam,For king Alexander had commanded them to go out to meet him,eo quod socer suus esset.because he was his father-in-law.

Cum autem introiret civitatem Ptolemæus,But when Ptolemy entered a city, ponebat custodias militum in singulis civitatibus.he placed garrisons of soldiers in each of the cities.

Et ut appropiavit Azoto,And when he drew near to Azotus, ostenderunt ei templum Dagon succensum igni, they revealed to him that the temple of Dagon had been burned with fire,et Azotum, and Azotuset cetera ejus demolita, and its suburbs had been demolished,et corpora projecta, and bodies had been abandoned,et eorum, and that, qui cæsi erant in bello, for those who had been cut to pieces in the war, tumulos quos fecerant secus viam.they had made a tomb along the way.

Et narraverunt regi quia hæc fecit Jonathas,And they told the king that Jonathan had done these things,ut invidiam facerent ei:so as to make him hated.et tacuit rex.But the king remained silent.

Et occurrit Jonathas regi in Joppen cum gloria,And Jonathan went to meet the king at Joppa with glory,et invicem se salutaverunt, and they greeted one another,et dormierunt illic.and they stayed there.

Et abiit Jonathas cum rege usque ad fluvium qui vocatur Eleutherus:And Jonathan went with the king as far as the river, which is called Eleutherus.et reversus est in Jerusalem. And he returned to Jerusalem.

Rex autem Ptolemæus obtinuit dominium civitatum usque Seleuciam maritimam,But king Ptolemy obtained the dominion of the coastal cities, as far as Seleucia,et cogitabat in Alexandrum consilia mala.and he devised evil plans against Alexander.

Et misit legatos ad Demetrium,And he sent ambassadors to Demetrius, dicens:saying:Veni,“Come, componamus inter nos pactum, let us compose a pact between us,et dabo tibi filiam meam, and I will give you my daughter, quam habet Alexander, whom Alexander had,et regnabis in regno patris tui:and you will reign in the kingdom of your father.

pœnitet enim me quod dederim illi filiam meam:For I regret that I have given him my daughter.quæsivit enim me occidere. For he has sought to kill me.”

Et vituperavit eum,And he slandered him, propterea quod concupierat regnum ejus.because he coveted his kingdom.

Et abstulit filiam suam,And he took away his daughter,et dedit eam Demetrio, and he gave her to Demetrius,et alienavit se ab Alexandro, and he alienated himself from Alexander,et manifestæ sunt inimicitiæ ejus.and his hostilities were made manifest.

Et intravit Ptolemæus Antiochiam,And Ptolemy entered Antioch,et imposuit duo diademata capiti suo,and he placed two diadems upon his head,Ægyptithat of Egypt,et Asiæ.and that of Asia.

Alexander autem rex erat in Cilicia illis temporibus:Now king Alexander was in Cilicia at that time, quia rebellabant qui erant in locis illis.because the people of those places were rebelling.

Et audivit Alexander,And when Alexander heard of it,et venit ad eum in bellum:he came against him in warfare.et produxit Ptolemæus rex exercitum,And king Ptolemy led forth his army,et occurrit ei in manu valida, and he met him with a strong hand,et fugavit eum.and he put him to flight.

Et fugit Alexander in Arabiam,And Alexander fled into Arabia,ut ibi protegeretur:so as to be protected there.rex autem Ptolemæus exaltatus est.And king Ptolemy was exalted.

Et abstulit Zabdiel Arabs caput Alexandri,And Zabdiel the Arab took off the head of Alexander,et misit Ptolemæo.and he sent it to Ptolemy.

Et rex Ptolemæus mortuus est in die tertia:And king Ptolemy died on the third day,et qui erant in munitionibus, perierunt ab his qui erant intra castra.and those who were in the strongholds were destroyed by those who were in the camp.

Et regnavit Demetrius anno centesimo sexagesimo septimo. And Demetrius reigned in the one hundred and sixty-seventh year.

In diebus illis congregavit Jonathas eos qui erant in Judæa,In those days, Jonathan gathered together those who were in Judea,ut expugnarent arcem quæ est in Jerusalem:in order to fight against the stronghold that was in Jerusalem.et fecerunt contra eam machinas multas. And they made many machines of war against it.

Et abierunt quidam qui oderant gentem suam viri iniqui ad regem Demetrium, et renuntiaverunt ei quod Jonathas obsideret arcem. And so, certain men of iniquity, who hated their own people, went forth to king Demetrius, and they reported to him that Jonathan was besieging the stronghold.

Et ut audivit,And when he heard it,iratus est:he became angry.et statim venit ad Ptolemaidam,And immediately he came to Ptolemais,et scripsit Jonathæ ne obsideret arcem, and he wrote to Jonathan that he should not besiege the stronghold, sed occurreret sibi ad colloquium festinato.but that he should meet with him promptly, for a discussion.

Ut audivit autem Jonathas,But when Jonathan heard this, jussit obsidere:he ordered them to besiege it.et elegit de senioribus Israël,And he chose some from the elders of Israelet de sacerdotibus, and from the priests,et dedit se periculo.and he put himself in danger.

Et accepit aurum,And he took gold,et argentum, and silver,et vestem, and vestments,et alia xenia multa, and many other presents,et abiit ad regem Ptolemaidam:and he went to the king at Ptolemais,et invenit gratiam in conspectu ejus, and he found favor in his sight.

et interpellabant adversus eum quidam iniqui ex gente sua.And some of the iniquitous from his nation came forward with objections against him.

Et fecit ei rex sicut fecerant ei qui ante eum fuerant:And the king treated him just as those who were before him had treated him.et exaltavit eum in conspectu omnium amicorum suorum,And he exalted him in the sight of all his friends.

et statuit ei principatum sacerdotii,And he confirmed him in the high priesthoodet quæcumque alia habuit prius pretiosa, and in all the other honors that he held before,et fecit eum principem amicorum.and he made him the leader of his friends.

Et postulavit Jonathas a rege ut immunem faceret Judæam,And Jonathan requested of the king that he would make Judea free from tribute,et tres toparchias, along with the three districts,et Samariamand Samaria,et confines ejus:and its confines.et promisit ei talenta trecenta. And he promised him three hundred talents.

Et consensit rex:And the king consented.et scripsit Jonathæ epistolas de his omnibus,And he wrote letters to Jonathan about all these things, hunc modum continentes:continuing in this way:

Rex Demetrius fratri Jonathæ salutem,“King Demetrius to his brother Jonathan,et genti Judæorum.and to the nation of the Jews: greetings.

Exemplum epistolæ, quam scripsimus Lastheni parenti nostro de vobis,We are sending you a copy of the letter that we wrote to Lasthenes, our parent, misimus ad vos ut sciretis:about you, so that you will know.

Rex Demetrius Lastheni parenti salutem.‘King Demetrius to Lasthenes, his parent: greetings.

Genti Judæorum amicis nostris,We have determined to do good to the people of the Jews,et conservantibus quæ justa sunt apud nos,who are our friends and who keep to what is just with us,decrevimus benefacere propter benignitatem ipsorum, because of their good will, quam erga nos habent.which they hold toward us.

Statuimus ergo illis omnes fines Judææ,Therefore,et tres civitates,we have assigned to them all the parts of Judea,Lydan, and the three cities,et Ramathan,Lydda and Ramatha,quæ additæ sunt Judææ ex Samaria, which were added to Judea from Samaria,et omnes confines earum, and all their confines, sequestrari omnibus sacrificantibus in Jerosolymis pro his quæ ab eis prius accipiebat rex per singulos annos,to be set apart for all those sacrificing in Jerusalem,et pro fructibus terræin place of that which the king previously received from them each year,et pomorum.and in place of the fruits of the land and of the fruit trees.

Et alia quæ ad nos pertinebant decimarum et tributorum ex hoc tempore,And,remittimus eis:as for the rest of that which pertains to us from tithes and tributes,et areas salinarum, from this time forward,et coronas,we release them from these,quæ nobis deferebantur,as well as from the drying areas of salt and the crowns that were presented to us.

omnia ipsis concedimus:All these,et nihil horum irritum erit,we concede to them,ex hoc,and nothing of these shall be revoked,et in omne tempus.from this time forward and for all time.

Nunc ergo curate facere horum exemplum,Now, therefore, take care to make a copy of these things,et detur Jonathæ, et ponatur in monte sancto, and let it be given to Jonathan and set upon the holy mountain,in loco celebri.in an honorable place.’”

Et videns Demetrius rex quod siluit terra in conspectu suo,And king Demetrius,et nihil ei resistit, seeing that the land was quieted in his sight and that nothing resisted him, dimisit totum exercitum suum, sent all his forces away, unumquemque in locum suum, each one to his own place, excepto peregrino exercitu, except the foreign army, quem contraxit ab insulis gentium:which he had drawn together from the islands of the nations.et inimici erant ei omnes exercitus patrum ejus. And so all the troops of his fathers were hostile to him.

Tryphon autem erat quidam partium Alexandri prius:But there was a certain one, Trypho, who was previously on Alexander’s side.et vidit quoniam omnis exercitus murmurabat contra Demetrium,And he saw that all the army murmured against Demetrius,et ivit ad Emalchuel Arabem, and so he went to Imalkue the Arab, qui nutriebat Antiochum filium Alexandri:who raised Antiochus, the son of Alexander.

et assidebat ei, ut traderet eum ipsi,And he persuaded him to deliver him to him,ut regnaret loco patris sui:so that he would reign in his father’s place.et enuntiavit ei quanta fecit Demetrius,And he reported to him what Demetrius had done,et inimicitias exercituum ejus adversus illum.and that his army was hostile to him.Et mansit ibi diebus multis. And he remained there for many days.

Et misit Jonathas ad Demetrium regem,And Jonathan sent to king Demetrius,ut ejiceret eos qui in arce erant in Jerusalem,so that he would cast out those who were in the stronghold in Jerusalemet qui in præsidiis erant:and those who were with the garrisons, quia impugnabant Israël.because they fought against Israel.

Et misit Demetrius ad Jonathan,And Demetrius sent to Jonathan, dicens:saying:Non hæc tantum faciam tibi,“I will not only do this for youet genti tuæ,and your people, sed gloria illustrabo te,but I will elevate your gloryet gentem tuam, and your nation, cum fuerit opportunum.when opportunity shall serve.

Nunc ergo recte feceris,Now, therefore,si miseris in auxilium mihi viros:you will do well if you send men as auxiliaries to me.quia discessit omnis exercitus meus. For all my army has withdrawn from me.”

Et misit ei Jonathas tria millia virorum fortium Antiochiam:And Jonathan sent three thousand strong men to him at Antioch.et venerunt ad regem,And they came to the king,et delectatus est rex in adventu eorum.and the king was delighted at their arrival.

Et convenerunt qui erant de civitate,And those who were of the city gathered together, centum viginti millia virorum, one hundred and twenty thousand men,et volebant interficere regem.and they wanted to execute the king.

Et fugit rex in aulam:And the king fled into the royal court.et occupaverunt qui erant de civitate,And those who were of the city, itinera civitatis, occupied the passageways of the city,et cœperunt pugnare.and they began to fight.

Et vocavit rex Judæos in auxilium,And the king called the Jews to his assistance.et convenerunt omnes simul ad eum,And they came together before him at the same time,et dispersi sunt omnes per civitatem:and then they all dispersed themselves throughout the city.

et occiderunt in illa die centum millia hominum,And they killed, in that day, one hundred thousand men,et succenderunt civitatem, and they set fire to the city,et ceperunt spolia multa in die illa, and they seized many spoils in that day,et liberaverunt regem.and they freed the king.

Et viderunt qui erant de civitate,And those who were of the city saw that the Jews had taken the city, quod obtinuissent Judæi civitatem sicut volebant:just as they wanted,et infirmati sunt mente sua,and they were weakened in their resolve,et clamaverunt ad regem cum precibus, and they cried out to the king with supplication, dicentes:saying,

Da nobis dextras,“Grant us a pledge,et cessent Judæi oppugnare nos,and let the Jews cease from assailing uset civitatem.and the city.”

Et projecerunt arma sua,And they threw down their arms,et fecerunt pacem, and they made peace.et glorificati sunt Judæi in conspectu regis,And the Jews were glorified in the sight of the king and in the sight of all who were in his realm.et in conspectu omnium qui erant in regno ejus,And they became renowned in the kingdom,et nominati sunt in regno:and they returned to Jerusalem,et regressi sunt in Jerusalem habentes spolia multa.holding many spoils.

Et sedit Demetrius rex in sede regni sui:And so king Demetrius sat on the throne of his kingdom.et siluit terra in conspectu ejus. And the land was quieted in his sight.

Et mentitus est omnia quæcumque dixit,And he falsified everything whatsoever that he had said.et abalienavit se a Jonatha,And he alienated himself from Jonathan,et non retribuit ei secundum beneficia quæ sibi tribuerat, and he did not repay him according to the benefits that he had received in tribute from him.et vexabat eum valde. And he vexed him greatly.

Post hæc autem reversus est Tryphon,But after this, Trypho returned,et Antiochus cum eo puer adolescens, and with him was Antiochus, the adolescent boy,et regnavit, and he reigned,et imposuit sibi diadema.and he put a diadem on himself.

Et congregati sunt ad eum omnes exercitus,And there assembled before him all the troops, quos disperserat Demetrius, which Demetrius had dispersed,et pugnaverunt contra eum:and they fought against him.et fugit,And he turned his backet terga vertit.and fled.

Et accepit Tryphon bestias,And Trypho took the elephants,et obtinuit Antiochiam.and he obtained Antioch.

Et scripsit Antiochus adolescens Jonathæ,And young Antiochus wrote to Jonathan, dicens:saying:Constituo tibi sacerdotium,“I confirm you in the priesthood,et constituo te super quatuor civitates, and I appoint you over the four cities,ut sis de amicis regis.so as to be among the king’s friends.”

Et misit illi vasa aurea in ministerium,And he sent him vessels of gold for his ministry,et dedit ei potestatem bibendi in auro, and he gave him the authority to drink from gold,et esse in purpura, and to be clothed in purple,et habere fibulam auream:and to have a golden clasp.

et Simonem fratrem ejus constituit ducem a terminis Tyri usque ad fines Ægypti. And he appointed his brother Simon as governor, from the borders of Tyre, all the way to the borders of Egypt.

Et exiit Jonathas,Then Jonathan went out,et perambulabat trans flumen civitates:and he passed through the cities across the river.et congregatus est ad eum omnis exercitus Syriæ in auxilium,And all the armies of Syria were gathered together in assistance to him,et venit Ascalonem, and he came to Askalon,et occurrerunt ei honorifice de civitate.and those from the city met him honorably.

Et abiit inde Gazam:And he went from there to Gaza.et concluserunt se qui erant Gazæ:And those who were in Gaza closed themselves in.et obsedit eam,And so he besieged it,et succendit quæ erant in circuitu civitatis, and he burned all that was around the city,et prædatus est ea.and he plundered it.

Et rogaverunt Gazenses Jonathan,And those of Gaza petitioned Jonathan,et dedit illis dexteram:and he pledged to them with his right hand,et accepit filios eorum obsides, and he accepted their sons as hostages and sent them to Jerusalem.et misit illos in Jerusalem:And he traveled through the country,et perambulavit regionem usque Damascum.as far as Damascus.

Et audivit Jonathas quod prævaricati sunt principes Demetrii in Cades,And Jonathan heard that the leaders of Demetrius were acting treacherously at Kadesh,quæ est in Galilæa,which is in Galilee, cum exercitu multo, with a great army, volentes eum removere a negotio regni:intending to remove him from the affairs of the kingdom.

et occurrit illis:And he went to meet them.fratrem autem suum Simonem reliquit intra provinciam. But he left his brother Simon behind in the countryside.

Et applicuit Simon ad Bethsuram,And Simon took a position against Bethzur,et expugnabat eam diebus multis, and he assailed it for many days,et conclusit eos.and he closed them in.

Et postulaverunt ab eo dextras accipere,And they asked him to accept a pledge,et dedit illis:and he granted this to them.et ejecit eos inde,And he cast them out of there,et cepit civitatem, and he seized the city,et posuit in ea præsidium.and he placed a garrison in it.

Et Jonathas et castra ejus applicuerunt ad aquam Genesar,And Jonathan and his camp took a position by the water of Gennesaret, and,et ante lucem vigilaverunt in campo Asor:before first light, they were standing watch in the plains of Hazor.

et ecce castra alienigenarum occurrebant in campo,And behold, an army of foreigners met him in the plains.et tendebant ei insidias in montibus:And they set up an ambush against him in the mountains.ipse autem occurrit ex adverso. But he met them from the opposite direction.

Insidiæ vero exsurrexerunt de locis suis,Yet those lying in ambush then rose up from their placeset commiserunt prælium.and joined them in combat.

Et fugerunt qui erant ex parte Jonathæ omnes,And all those who were from Jonathan’s side fled,et nemo relictus est ex eis,and not one of them was left, nisi Mathathias filius Absolomi, except Mattathias, the son of Absalom,et Judas filius Calphi, and Judas, the son of Chalphi, princeps militiæ exercitus.the leader of military training.

Et scidit Jonathas vestimenta sua,And so Jonathan tore his garments,et posuit terram in capite suo,and he placed dirt on his head,et oravit.and he prayed.

Et reversus est Jonathas ad eos in prælium,And Jonathan turned back toward them in battle,et convertit eos in fugam, and he put them to flight,et pugnaverunt.and they fought.

Et viderunt qui fugiebant partis illius,And when those from his side, who had fled,et reversi sunt ad eum,saw this, they returned to him,et insequebantur cum eo omnes usque Cades ad castra sua,and with him they all pursued them, even to Kadesh, to their camp,et pervenerunt usque illuc:and they even passed beyond there.

et ceciderunt de alienigenis in die illa tria millia virorum:And there fell from the foreigners on that day three thousand men.et reversus est Jonathas in Jerusalem. And Jonathan returned to Jerusalem.
