Lætamur itaque de gloria vestra. And so, we rejoice at your glory.

Nos autem circumdederunt multæ tribulationes,But many tribulationset multa prælia, and many wars have surrounded us,et impugnaverunt nos reges qui sunt in circuitu nostro.and the kings who are around us have fought against us.

Noluimus ergo vobis molesti esse,But we are not willing to trouble you, neque ceteris sociisnor the rest of our allies and friends,et amicis nostris in his præliis:about these battles.

habuimus enim de cælo auxilium,For we have assistance from heaven,et liberati sumus nos,and we have been delivered,et humiliati sunt inimici nostri.and our enemies have been humbled.

Elegimus itaque Numenium Antiochi filium,And so, we have chosen Numenius, the son of Antiochus,et Antipatrem Jasonis filium, and Antipater, the son of Jason,et misimus ad Romanos renovare cum eis amicitiam et societatem pristinam.and we have sent them to the Romans, to renew the former peace treaty and alliance with them.

Arius rex Spartiatarum Oniæ sacerdoti magno salutem.“Arius, king of the Spartans, to Onias, the great priest: greetings.

Inventum est in scriptura de Spartiatis,It is found in scripture,et Judæis,about the Spartans and the Jews, quoniam sunt fratres, that they are brothers,et quod sunt de genere Abraham.and that they are of the family of Abraham.

Et nunc ex quo hæc cognovimus,And since we know these things, benefacitis scribentes nobis de pace vestra.you would do well to write to us about your peace.

And so,nostræ: mandavimus itaque hæc nuntiari vobis.we have commanded that these things should be announced to you.”

Et audivit Jonathas quoniam regressi sunt principes Demetrii cum exercitu multo supra quam prius,And Jonathan heard that the leaders from Demetrius had returned again with a greater army than before, pugnare adversus eum:so as to fight against him.

et exiit ab Jerusalem,And so, he departed from Jerusalem,et occurrit eis in Amathite regione:and he met them in the region of Hamath.non enim dederat eis spatium ut ingrederentur regionem ejus. For he did not give them time to enter into his own region.

Et misit speculatores in castra eorum:And he sent spies into their camp, and,et reversi renuntiaverunt quod constituunt supervenire illis nocte.returning, they reported that they planned to come upon them in the night.

Cum occidisset autem sol,And when the sun had set,præcepit Jonathas suis vigilare,Jonathan instructed his men to stand watch,et esse in armis paratos ad pugnam tota nocte:and to be in arms, ready to fight, all night long,et posuit custodes per circuitum castrorum.and he stationed guards around the camp.

Et audierunt adversarii quod paratus est Jonathas cum suis in bello:And the adversaries heard that Jonathan was prepared, with his own, for warfare.et timuerunt, et formidaverunt in corde suo:And they were struck with fear and dread in their heart.et accenderunt focos in castris suis. And they kindled fires in their camp.

Jonathas autem,But Jonathan,et qui cum eo erant, and those who were with him,non cognoverunt usque mane:did not know about it until morning.videbant autem luminaria ardentia,For they saw the lights burning.

et secutus est eos Jonathas,And Jonathan pursued them,et non comprehendit eos:but did not overtake them.transierant enim flumen Eleutherum. For they had crossed the river Eleutherus.

Et divertit Jonathas ad Arabas,And Jonathan diverted toward the Arabians, qui vocantur Zabadæi:who are called Zabadeans.et percussit eos,And he struck themet accepit spolia eorum.and took their spoils.

Et junxit,And he regroupedet venit Damascum, and came to Damascus,et perambulabat omnem regionem illam.and he passed through all that region.

Simon autem exiit,But Simon went forthet venit usque ad Ascalonem, and came as far as Askalon,et ad proxima præsidia:and the nearby fortresses,et declinavit in Joppen, but he turned aside to Joppaet occupavit eamand occupied it,

(audivit enim quod vellent præsidium tradere partibus Demetrii),(for he had heard that they intended to hand over the fortress that was on the side of Demetrius)et posuit ibi custodes ut custodirent eam.and he stationed a guard there to keep it.

Et reversus est Jonathas,And Jonathan returned,et convocavit seniores populi, and he called together the elders of the people,et cogitavit cum eis ædificare præsidia in Judæa,and he decided with them to build fortresses in Judea,

et ædificare muros in Jerusalem, and to build up the walls in Jerusalem,et exaltare altitudinem magnam inter medium arcis et civitatis, and to raise a great height between the stronghold and the city,ut separaret eam a civitate,in order to separate it from the city,ut esset ipsa singulariter, et neque emant,so that it would stand alone and would have neither buying, neque vendant.nor selling there.

Et convenerunt ut ædificarent civitatem:And they came together to build up the city.et cecidit murus qui erat super torrentem ab ortu solis,And the wall that was over the brook, toward the rising of the sun, was fallen.et reparavit eum, qui vocatur Caphetetha:And he repaired that which is called Chaphenatha.

et Simon ædificavit Adiada in Sephela,And Simon rebuilt Adida in Shephelah,et munivit eam,and he fortified it,et imposuit portas et seras.and he set up gates and bars.

Et cum cogitasset Tryphon regnare Asiæ,And so, when Trypho had decided to reign over Asia,et assumere diadema, and to assume the diadem,et extendere manum in Antiochum regem:and to extend his hand against king Antiochus,

timens ne forte non permitteret eum Jonathas,he was afraid, sed pugnaret adversus eum, lest Jonathan might not permit him,quærebat comprehendere eum,but might fight against him.et occidere. So he sought to seize him and to kill him.Et exsurgens abiit in Bethsan. And he rose up and went to Bethshan.

Et exivit Jonathas obviam illi cum quadraginta millibus virorum electorum in prælium,And Jonathan went out to meet him with forty thousand men chosen for battle,et venit Bethsan.and he came to Bethshan.

Et vidit Tryphon quia venit Jonathas cum exercitu multo ut extenderet in eum manus:And when Trypho saw that Jonathan came with a great army to extend his hand against him, timuit,he was afraid.

et excepit eum cum honore,And so he received him with honor,et commendavit eum omnibus amicis suis, and he commended him to all his friends,et dedit ei munera:and he gave him gifts.et præcepit exercitibus suis ut obedirent ei,And he instructed his troops to obey him, sicut sibi.just as himself.

Et dixit Jonathæ:And he said to Jonathan:Ut quid vexasti universum populum,“Why have you troubled all the people, cum bellum nobis non sit?when there is no war between us?

et nunc remitte eos in domos suas:And now, send them back to their houses, elige autem tibi viros paucos, but choose for yourself a few men,qui tecum sint, who may remain with you,et veni mecum Ptolemaidam, and come with me to Ptolemais,et tradam eam tibi, and I will deliver it to you,et reliqua præsidia, et exercitum, and the rest of the fortresses, and the army,et universos præpositos negotii:and all who are in charge of governing,et conversus abibo:and I will turn and go away.propterea enim veni. For this is the reason that I came.”

Et credidit ei,And Jonathan believed him,et fecit sicut dixit:and he did as he said.et dimisit exercitum,And he sent away his army,et abierunt in terram Juda.and they departed into the land of Judah.

Retinuit autem secum tria millia virorum:But he retained with him three thousand men,ex quibus remisit in Galilæam duo millia:of whom he sent two thousand into Galilee, mille autem venerunt cum eo.and one thousand came with him.

Ut autem intravit Ptolemaidam Jonathas,But when Jonathan entered into Ptolemais, clauserunt portas civitatis Ptolemenses, those of Ptolemais closed the gates of the city,et comprehenderunt eum:and they captured him.et omnes qui cum eo intraverant,And all those who entered with him, gladio interfecerunt.they executed with the sword.

Et misit Tryphon exercitum et equites in Galilæam et in campum magnum,And Trypho sent an army and horsemen into Galilee, and into the great plain,ut perderent omnes socios Jonathæ.to destroy all the associates of Jonathan.

At illi cum cognovissent quia comprehensus est Jonathas,But,et periit, when they had thought that Jonathan had been captured and slain,et omnes qui cum eo erant, along with all who were with him, hortati sunt semetipsos, they encouraged one another,et exierunt parati in prælium.and they went out prepared for battle.

Et videntes hi qui insecuti fuerant,Then those who had pursued them, quia pro anima res est illis, seeing that they stood for their lives, reversi sunt:were turned back.

illi autem venerunt omnes cum pace in terram Juda. And so, they all came into the land of Judah with peace.Et planxerunt Jonathan,And they bewailed Jonathan,et eos qui cum ipso fuerant, valde:and those who had been with him, exceedingly.et luxit Israël luctu magno. And Israel mourned with great lamentation.

Et quæsierunt omnes gentes quæ erant in circuitu eorum conterere eos:Then all the nations that were all around them sought to crush them.dixerunt enim:For they said:

Non habent principem et adjuvantem:“They have no leader or helper.nunc ergo expugnemus illos,Now therefore,et tollamus de hominibus memoriam eorum.let us fight against them and take away the memory of them from among men.”
