Et audivit Simon quod congregavit Tryphon exercitum copiosum ut veniret in terram Juda,And Simon heard that Trypho had gathered together an immense army to come to the land of Judahet attereret eam.and to lay waste to it.

Videns quia in tremore populus est,Seeing that the people were fearfulet in timore, and trembling, ascendit Jerusalem,he went up to Jerusalem,et congregavit populum:and he gathered together the people.

et adhortans dixit:And exhorting them,Vos scitis quanta ego,he said:et fratres mei,“You know what great battles I,et domus patris mei,and my brothers, fecimus pro legibus et pro sanctis, and the house of my father,prælia, have fought for the laws and for the holy places,et angustias quales vidimus:and the anguish that we have seen.

horum gratia perierunt fratres mei omnes propter Israël,As a result of these things, all my brothers have perished for the sake of Israel,et relictus sum ego solus.and I have been left alone.

Et nunc non mihi contingat parcere animæ meæ in omni tempore tribulationis:And now, it is not necessary for me to spare my life in any time of tribulation.non enim melior sum fratribus meis. For I am not better than my brothers.

Vindicabo itaque gentem meam,And so,et sancta,I will vindicate my people and the sanctuary, natos quoque nostros, and likewise our children and wives.et uxores:For all the Gentiles have gathered together to crush us,quia congregatæ sunt universæ gentes conterere nos inimicitiæ gratia.solely out of malice.”

Et accensus est spiritus populi simul ut audivit sermones istos:And the spirit of the people was immediately enkindled, when they heard these words.

et responderunt voce magna,And they responded with a loud voice, dicentes:saying:Tu es dux noster loco Judæ,“You are our leader in place of Judas and of Jonathan,et Jonathæ fratris tui:your brother.

pugna prælium nostrum:Fight our battles,et omnia, quæcumque dixeris nobis, faciemus.and we will do whatever you tell us to do.”

Et congregans omnes viros bellatores,And so, gathering together all the men of war, acceleravit consummare universos muros Jerusalem,he accelerated the completion of all the walls of Jerusalem,et munivit eam in gyro.and he fortified it all around.

Et misit Jonathan filium Absalomi,And he sent Jonathan, the son of Absalom,et cum eo exercitum novum in Joppen, and with him a new army, into Joppa,et ejectis his qui erant in ea,and he cast out those who were in it,remansit illic ipse.and he himself remained there.

Et movit Tryphon a Ptolemaida cum exercitu multo,And Trypho moved from Ptolemais, with a great army,ut veniret in terram Juda,to come into the land of Judah,et Jonathas cum eo in custodia.and Jonathan was with him in custody.

Simon autem applicuit in Addus contra faciem campi. But Simon took up a position at Addus, opposite the face of the plains.

Et ut cognovit Tryphon quia surrexit Simon loco fratris sui Jonathæ,And when Trypho realized that Simon rose up in the place of his brother, Jonathan,et quia commissurus esset cum eo prælium, and that he would be joining in battle with him, misit ad eum legatos,he sent messengers to him,

dicens: Pro argento, quod debebat frater tuus Jonathas in ratione regis propter negotia quæ habuit, detinuimus eum.saying: “We have detained your brother, Jonathan, because of the money that he owed to the king’s account, because of the matters for which he was responsible.

Et nunc mitte argenti talenta centum,And now, send a hundred talents of silver,et duos filios ejus obsides, and two of his sons for hostages,ut non dimissus fugiat a nobis,so that when he is dismissed, he may not flee from us.et remittemus eum.And then we will release him.”

Et cognovit Simon quia cum dolo loqueretur secum:And Simon knew that he was speaking deceitfully to him.jussit tamen dari argentum et pueros,Yet he ordered the money and the boys to be given,ne inimicitiam magnam sumeret ad populum Israël,lest he should bring upon himself a great hostility from the people of Israel, dicentem:who might have said,

Quia non misit ei argentum, et pueros, propterea periit.“It is because he did not send the money and the boys that he perished.”

Et misit pueros,So he sent the boyset centum talenta:and one hundred talents.et mentitus est,And he was lyinget non dimisit Jonathan.and did not dismiss Jonathan.

Et post hæc venit Tryphon intra regionem,And after this, Trypho came into the country,ut contereret eam: et gyraverunt per viam quæ ducit Ador:to crush it. And they circled around by the way that leads to Adora.et Simon et castra ejus ambulabant in omnem locum quocumque ibant. And Simon and his camp marched into every place, wherever they went.

Qui autem in arce erant, miserunt ad Tryphonem legatos,But those who were in the stronghold sent messengers to Trypho,ut festinaret venire per desertum,so that he would hurry to come through the desert,et mitteret illis alimonias.and to send them provisions.

Et paravit Tryphon omnem equitatum, ut veniret illa nocte:And Trypho prepared all his horsemen to arrive on that night.erat autem nix multa valde,But there was a very great snowfall,et non venit in Galaaditim.and he did not come into Gilead.

Et cum appropinquasset Bascaman,And when he approached toward Baskama, occidit Jonathan et filios ejus illic.he killed Jonathan and his sons there.

Et convertit Tryphon,And Trypho turned backet abiit in terram suam.and went into his own land.

Et misit Simon, et accepit ossa Jonathæ fratris sui,And Simon sent and took the bones of Jonathan, his brother,et sepelivit ea in Modin civitate patrum ejus.and he buried them in Modin, the city of his fathers.

Et planxerunt eum omnis Israël planctu magno,And all Israel bewailed him with great lamentation.et luxerunt eum dies multos. And they mourned him for many days.

Et ædificavit Simon super sepulchrum patris sui et fratrum suorum ædificium altum visu, lapide polito retro et ante. And Simon built, over the sepulcher of his father and of his brothers, a building, lofty to see, of polished stone, front and back.

Et statuit septem pyramidas,And he set up seven pyramids, unam contra unam, one against another, patrifor his father,et matri, and his mother,et quatuor fratribus:and his four brothers.

et his circumposuit columnas magnas:And around these he placed great columns;et super columnas arma, and upon the columns, weapons,ad memoriam æternam:as a continual memorial;et juxta arma naves sculptas, and beside the weapons, carvings of ships,quæ viderentur ab omnibus navigantibus mare:which might be seen by all those who sail the sea.

hoc est sepulchrum,This is the sepulcher that he made in Modin, quod fecit in Modin usque in hunc diem.even to this day.

Tryphon autem cum iter faceret cum Antiocho rege adolescente,But Trypho, when he was on a journey with the young king, Antiochus, dolo occidit eum:killed him by deceit.

et regnavit loco ejus,And he reigned in his place,et imposuit sibi diadema Asiæ,and he put on the diadem of Asia,et fecit plagam magnam in terra.and he caused great scourges upon the land.

Et ædificavit Simon præsidia Judææ,And Simon built up the strongholds of Judea, muniens ea turribus excelsis, fortifying them with high towers,et muris magnis, and great walls,et portis, and gateset seris:and bars.et posuit alimenta in munitionibus. And he placed provisions in the fortresses.

Et elegit Simon viros,And Simon chose men,et misit ad Demetrium regem ut faceret remissionem regioni:and he sent to king Demetrius, so that he would grant a remission to the region, quia actus omnes Tryphonis per direptionem fuerant gesti.for all that Trypho did was to carry out plundering.

Et Demetrius rex ad verba ista respondit ei,And king Demetrius responded to this word,et scripsit epistolam talem:and he wrote a letter in this manner:

Rex Demetrius Simoni summo sacerdoti“King Demetrius to Simon,et amico regum, the high priest and friend of kings,et senioribus, and to the elders,et genti Judæorum, and to the people of the Jews:salutem.greetings.

Coronam auream, et bahem, quam misistis,The golden crown and the bahem that you sent, suscepimus:we have received.et parati sumus facere vobiscum pacem magnam,And we are prepared to make a great peace with you,et scribere præpositis regis remittere vobis quæ indulsimus.and to write to the officers of the king to remit to you the things that we have released.

Quæcumque enim constituimus, vobis constant:For whatever we have established remains in force for you.munitiones, quas ædificastis,The strongholds that you have built, vobis sint:let them be yours.

remittimus quoque ignorantias et peccata usque in hodiernum diem,Likewise, any oversight or fault, even to this day,et coronam quam debebatis:we forgive it, along with the crown that you owed.et si quid aliud erat tributarium in Jerusalem,And if anything else was taxed in Jerusalem, jam non sit tributarium.now let it not be taxed.

Et si qui ex vobis apti sunt conscribi inter nostros,And if any of you is fit to be enrolled among our own, conscribantur, let them be enrolled.et sit inter nos pax.And let there be peace between us.”

Anno centesimo septuagesimo,In the one hundred and seventieth year, ablatum est jugum gentium ab Israël.the yoke of the Gentiles was taken away from Israel.

Et cœpit populus Israël scribere in tabulis,And the people of Israel began to write in the tablets and the public records,et gestis publicis,in the first year under Simon:anno primo sub Simone summo sacerdote, high priest, magno duce, great commander,et principe Judæorum.and leader of the Jews.

In diebus illis applicuit Simon ad Gazam,In those days,et circumdedit eam castris,Simon took up a position at Gaza,et fecit machinas, and he encamped around it,et applicuit ad civitatem, and he made machines of war,et percussit turrem unam, and he applied them to the city,et comprehendit eam.and he struck one tower and captured it.

Et eruperant qui erant intra machinam in civitatem,And those who were within the machine broke forth into the city.et factus est motus magnus in civitate. And a great commotion occurred in the city.

Et ascenderunt qui erant in civitate cum uxoribusAnd those who were in the city ascended upon the wall,et filiis supra murum, with their wives and children, scissis tunicis suis, having torn their tunics.et clamaverunt voce magna,And they cried out with a loud voice, postulantes a Simone dextras sibi dari, asking Simon to grant them a pledge.

et dixerunt:And they said,Non nobis reddas secundum malitias nostras,“Do not repay us according to our malice, sed secundum misericordias tuas.but according to your mercy.”

Et flexus Simon, non debellavit eos:And weeping, Simon did not destroy them.ejecit tamen eos de civitate,Yet he cast them out of the city,et mundavit ædes in quibus fuerant simulacra, and he cleansed the buildings, in which there had been idols.et tunc intravit in eam cum hymnis benedicens Dominum:And then he entered into it with hymns, blessing the Lord.

et ejecta ab ea omni immunditia,And,collocavit in ea viros qui legem facerent:having cast out of it all uncleanness,et munivit eam,he placed in it men who would observe the law.et fecit sibi habitationem. And he fortified it and made it his dwelling place.

Qui autem erant in arce Jerusalem, prohibebantur egredi et ingredi regionem,But those who were in the stronghold of Jerusalem were prohibited from going out and entering the region,et emere ac vendere:and from buying and selling.et esurierunt valde,And they were very hungry,et multi ex eis fame perierunt, and many of them perished through famine.

et clamaverunt ad Simonem ut dextras acciperent:And they cried out to Simon, that they might receive a pledge,et dedit illis:and he granted it to them.et ejecit eos inde,And he cast them out of there,et mundavit arcem a contaminationibus:and he cleansed the stronghold from contaminations.

et intraverunt in eam tertia et vigesima die secundi mensis,And they entered into it on the twenty-third day of the second month, anno centesimo septuagesimo primo,in the one hundred and seventy-first year, cum laude, with thanksgiving,et ramis palmarum, and palm branches,et cinyris, and lyres,et cymbalis, and cymbals,et nablis, and psalteries,et hymnis, and hymns,et canticis, and canticles, quia contritus est inimicus magnus ex Israël.because a great enemy had been crushed out of Israel.

Et constituit ut omnibus annis agerentur dies hi cum lætitia. And he established that these days should be kept every year with rejoicing.

Et munivit montem templi,And he fortified the mountain of the temple, qui erat secus arcem, which was near the stronghold,et habitavit ibi ipse, and he lived there himself,et qui cum eo erant.along with those who were with him.

Et vidit Simon Joannem filium suum,And Simon saw that John, his son, quod fortis prælii vir esset:was a valiant man in battle.et posuit eum ducem virtutum universarum:And so he appointed him as commander of all the forces.et habitavit in Gazaris. And he lived in Gazara.
