1Et misit rex Antiochus filius Demetrii epistolas ab insulis maris Simoni sacerdoti,And king Antiochus, the son of Demetrius, sent letters from the islands of the sea to Simon,et principi gentis Judæorum,the priest and leader of the nation of the Jews,et universæ genti:and to all the people.

2et erant continentes hunc modum:And these continued in this way:Rex Antiochus Simoni sacerdoti magno,“King Antiochus to Simon, the great priest,et genti Judæorum salutem.and to the people of the Jews: greetings.

3Quoniam quidem pestilentes obtinuerunt regnum patrum nostrorum,Since certain pestilent persons have obtained the kingdom of our fathers,volo autem vendicare regnum,it is my will, then,et restituere illud sicut erat antea:to vindicate the kingdom and to restore it,et electam feci multitudinem exercitus,just as it was before. And so, I have chosen a great army,et feci naves bellicas.and I have built ships of war.

4Volo autem procedere per regionem ut ulciscar in eos,Furthermore,qui corruperunt regionem nostram,I intend to pass through the region,et qui desolaverunt civitates multas in regno meo.so that I may take revenge on those who have corrupted our country and who have desolated many cities in my kingdom.

5Nunc ergo statuo tibi omnes oblationes, quas remiserunt tibi ante me omnes reges, et quæcumque alia dona remiserunt tibi:Now, therefore, I confirm to you all the oblations that all the kings before me have remitted to you, and whatever other gifts they remitted to you.

6et permitto tibi facere percussuram proprii numismatis in regione tua:And I permit you to make a striking of your own coins for your country.

7Jerusalem autem sanctam esse,Moreover, let Jerusalem be holy and free.et liberam: et omnia arma,And all the weapons that have been made,quæ fabricata sunt, et præsidia,and the fortresses that you have constructed,quæ construxisti,or that you hold,quæ tenes, maneant tibi.let them remain with you.

8Et omne debitum regis,And all that is owed to the king,et quæ futura sunt regi,and what should belong to the king in the future,ex hocfrom this time and for all time,et in totum tempus remittuntur tibi.is remitted to you.

9Cum autem obtinuerimus regnum nostrum,Yet,glorificabimus te,when we have obtained our kingdom,et gentem tuam,we will glorify you,et templum,and your nation,gloria magna,and the temple with great glory,ita ut manifestetur gloria vestra in universa terra.so much so that your glory shall be made manifest in all the earth.”

10Anno centesimo septuagesimo quarto exiit Antiochus in terram patrum suorum,In the one hundred and seventy-fourth year, Antiochus went into the land of his fathers,et convenerunt ad eum omnes exercitus,and all the armies came over to him,ita ut pauci relicti essent cum Tryphone.so that few were left with Trypho.

11Et insecutus est eum Antiochus rex,And king Antiochus followed him as he fled along the sea coastet venit Doram fugiens per maritimam:and came to Dora.

12sciebat enim quod congregata sunt mala in eum,For he knew that evils had gathered together upon him,et reliquit eum exercitus:and that his troops had forsaken him.

13et applicuit Antiochus super Doram cum centum viginti millibus virorum belligeratorum,And Antiochus took up a position above Dora,et octo millibus equitum:with one hundred and twenty thousand men of warfare and eight thousand horsemen.

14et circuivit civitatem,And he encircled the city,et naves a mari accesserunt:and the ships drew near by sea.et vexabant civitatem a terra et mari,And they assailed the city by land and by sea,et neminem sinebant ingredi vel egredi.and they permitted no one to go in or out.

15Venit autem Numenius,But Numenius,et qui cum eo fuerant,and those who had been with him,ab urbe Roma,came from the city of Rome,habentes epistolas regibus et regionibus scriptas,having letters written to the kings and the regions,in quibus continebantur hæc:in which was contained these things:

16Lucius consul Romanorum,“Lucius, consul of the Romans,Ptolemæo regi salutem.to king Ptolemy: greetings.

17Legati Judæorum venerunt ad nos amici nostri,The ambassadors of the Jews, our friends,renovantes pristinam amicitiam et societatem,came to us, to renew the former friendship and alliance,missi a Simone principe sacerdotum et populo Judæorum.having been sent from Simon, the leader of the priests and the people of the Jews.

18Attulerunt autem et clypeum aureum mnarum mille.And they also brought a shield of gold of over a thousand pounds.

19Placuit itaque nobis scribere regibusAnd so,et regionibus,it was pleasing to us to write to the kings and the regions,ut non inferant illis mala,that they should do no harm to them,neque impugnent eos,nor fight against them,et civitates eorum,and their cities,et regiones eorum:and their regions,et ut non ferant auxilium pugnantibus adversus eos.and that they should bear no assistance to those fighting against them.

20Visum autem est nobis accipere ab eis clypeum.And it seemed good to us to receive the shield from them.

21Si qui ergo pestilentes refugerunt de regione ipsorum ad vos,If, therefore, those who are pestilent have taken refuge with you from their region,tradite eos Simoni principi sacerdotum,hand them over to Simon, the leader of the priests,ut vindicet in eos secundum legem suam.so that he may give a verdict to them according to their law.”

23et in omnes regiones:and to all the regions,et Lampsaco,and to Lampsacuset Spartiatis,and to the Spartans,et in Delum,and to Delos,et in Myndum,and Myndos,et in Sicyonem,and Sicyon,et in Cariam,and Caria,et in Samum,and Samos,et in Pamphyliam,and Pamphylia,et in Lyciam,and Lycia,et in Alicarnassum,and Halicarnassus,et in Coo,and Cos,et in Siden,and Side,et in Aradon,and Aradus,et in Rhodum,and Rhodes,et in Phaselidem,and Phaselis,et in Gortynam,and Gortyna,et Gnidum,and Gnidus,et Cyprum,and Cyprus,et Cyrenen.and Cyrene.

24Exemplum autem eorum scripserunt Simoni principi sacerdotum, et populo Judæorum.Moreover, they wrote a copy of these things to Simon, the leader of the priests and the people of the Jews.

25Antiochus autem rex applicuit castra in Doram secundo,But king Antiochus positioned his camp near Dora a second time,admovens ei semper manus,moving his hand against it continually,et machinas faciens:and making machines of war.et conclusit Tryphonem,And he enclosed Trypho,ne procederet:lest he escape.

26et misit ad eum Simon duo millia virorum electorum in auxilium,And Simon sent two thousand chosen men to him as auxiliaries,et argentum,and silver,et aurum,and gold,et vasa copiosa:and an abundance of equipment.

27et noluit ea accipere,And he was not willing to receive them,sed rupit omnia, quæ pactus est cum eo antea,but he broke all of the pact that he made with him before,et alienavit se ab eo.and he alienated himself from him.

28Et misit ad eum Athenobium unum de amicis suis,And he sent to him Athenobius,ut tractaret cum ipso,one of his friends,dicens:to deal with him,Vos tenetis Joppen,saying:et Gazaram,“You hold Joppaet arcem,and Gazara,quæ est in Jerusalem,and the stronghold that is in Jerusalem,civitates regni mei:which are cities of my kingdom.

29fines earum desolastis,You have desolated their parts,et fecistis plagam magnam in terra,and you have caused a great scourging in the land,et dominati estis per loca multa in regno meo.and you have become ruler throughout many places in my kingdom.

30Nunc ergo tradite civitates quas occupastis,Now, therefore, hand over the cities that you occupy,et tributa locorum in quibus dominati estis extra fines Judææ:and the tributes of the places where you have become ruler beyond the borders of Judea.

31sin autem,But if not,date pro illis quingenta talenta argenti,give me for them five hundred talents of silver,et exterminii,and for the destruction that you have caused,quod exterminastis,and for the tributes of the cities,et tributorum civitatum alia talenta quingenta:another five hundred talents.sin autem,But if not,veniemus,we will comeet expugnabimus vos.and fight against you.”

32Et venit Athenobius amicus regis in Jerusalem,So Athenobius,et vidit gloriam Simonis,the friend of the king,et claritatem in auro,came to Jerusalem and saw the glory of Simon,et argento,and his splendor in gold and silver,et apparatum copiosum:and his abundance of equipment,et obstupuit,and he was astonished.et retulit ei verba regis.And he repeated the words of the king to him.

33Et respondit ei Simon,And Simon responded to him,et dixit ei:and he said to him:Neque alienam terram sumpsimus,“We have not taken foreign land,neque aliena detinemus:nor do we hold anything foreign,sed hæreditatem patrum nostrorum,but we hold the inheritance of our fathers,quæ injuste ab inimicis nostris aliquo tempore possessa est.which was for some time unjustly possessed by our enemies.

34Nos vero tempus habentes,In truth, since we have the opportunity,vindicamus hæreditatem patrum nostrorum.we claim the inheritance of our fathers.

35Nam de JoppeAnd as to Joppa and Gazara,et Gazara quæ expostulas,which you demand,ipsi faciebant in populo plagam magnam,they brought a great scourging on the people and our country.et in regione nostra:For these,horum damus talenta centum.we will give one hundred talents.”Et non respondit ei Athenobius verbum.And Athenobius did not respond a word to him.

36Reversus autem cum ira ad regem,But, returning with anger to the king,renuntiavit ei verba ista,he reported to him these words,et gloriam Simonis,and the glory of Simon,et universa quæ vidit,and all that he had seen.et iratus est rex ira magna.And the king became angry with a great anger.

37Tryphon autem fugit navi in Orthosiada.But Trypho fled by ship to Orthosia.

38Et constituit rex Cendebæum ducem maritimum,And the king appointed Cendebeus as commander of the seacoast,et exercitum peditum et equitum dedit illi.and he gave him an army of foot soldiers and horsemen.

39Et mandavit illi movere castra contra faciem Judææ:And he commanded him to move with his camp against the face of Judea.et mandavit ei ædificare Gedorem,And he commanded him to build up Kedron,et obstruere portas civitatis,and to barricade the gates of the city,et debellare populum.and to make war against the people.Rex autem persequebatur Typhonem.But the king pursued Trypho.

40Et pervenit Cendebæus Jamniam,And Cendebeus passed through to Jamnia,et cœpit irritare plebem,and he began to provoke the populace,et conculcare Judæam,and to trample Judea,et captivare populum,and to take the people captive,et interficere,and to execute,et ædificare Gedorem.and to build up Kedron.

41Et collocavit illic equites et exercitum,And he stationed horsemen and an army there,ut egressi perambularent viam Judææ,so that they could go out and travel through the ways of Judea,sicut constituit ei rex.as the king appointed him to do.
