Et ascendit Joannes de Gazaris,And so, John came up from Gazara,et nuntiavit Simoni patri suo quæ fecit Cendebæus in populo ipsorum.and he reported to Simon, his father, what Cendebeus had done against their people.

Et vocavit Simon duos filios seniores,And Simon called his two eldest sons,Judam et Joannem,Judas and John,et ait illis: Ego,and he said to them:et fratres mei,“I and my brothers,et domus patris mei expugnavimus hostes Israël ab adolescentia usque in hunc diem:and my father’s house, have fought against the enemies of Israel from our youth, even to this day.et prosperatum est in manibus nostris liberare Israël aliquoties. And this work has prospered in our hands, so that we have delivered Israel several times.

Nunc autem senui:And now that I am old,sed estote loco meo,you must act in place of me and my brothers,et fratres mei,and go out to fight for our nation.et egressi pugnate pro gente nostra:Truly, auxilium vero de cælo vobiscum sit.may the help of heaven be with you.”

Et elegit de regione viginti millia virorum belligeratorum,Then he chose from the region twenty thousand men of warfare,et equites:and horsemen;et profecti sunt ad Cendebæum,and they started out toward Cendebeus.et dormierunt in Modin. And they rested in Modin.

Et surrexerunt mane,And they rose up in the morning and went out into the plains.et abierunt in campum:And behold,et ecce exercitus copiosus in obviam illis peditum et equitum:an abundant army of foot soldiers and horsemen was there to meet them,et fluvius torrens erat inter medium ipsorum.and there was a river flowing between them.

Et admovit castra contra faciem eorum ipse et populus ejus,And he and his people moved their camp opposite their face,et vidit populum trepidantem ad transfretandum torrentem:and he saw the trepidation of the people to cross over the river,et transfretavit primus, and so he crossed over first.et viderunt eum viri,And seeing him,et transierunt post eum.the men also crossed after him.

Et divisit populum et equites in medio peditum:And he divided the people and the horsemen into the midst of the foot soldiers.erat autem equitatus adversariorum copiosus nimis. But the horsemen of the adversary were exceedingly numerous.

Et exclamaverunt sacris tubis,And they sounded the holy trumpets.et in fugam conversus est Cendebæus et castra ejus:And Cendebeus and his army were turned back.et ceciderunt ex eis multi vulnerati:And many of them fell wounded.residui autem in munitionem fugerunt. But the rest fled into the fortress.

Tunc vulneratus est Judas frater Joannis:Then Judas, the brother of John,Joannes autem insecutus est eos,was wounded. But John pursued them, donec venit Cedronem, until he came to Kedron, quam ædificavit:which he had built.

et fugerunt usque ad turres, quæ erant in agris Azoti,And they fled all the way to the towers that were in the fields of Azotus,et succendit eas igni.and he burnt them with fire.Et ceciderunt ex illis duo millia virorum,And there fell of them two thousand men,et reversus est in Judæam in pace.and he returned to Judea in peace.

Et Ptolemæus filius Abobi constitutus erat dux in campo Jericho,Now Ptolemy, the son of Abubus, was appointed commander over the plain of Jericho,et habebat argentum et aurum multum:and he held much silver and gold.

erat enim gener summi sacerdotis. For he was the son-in-law of the high priest.

Et exaltatum est cor ejus,And his heart was exalted,et volebat obtinere regionem, and he wanted to obtain the region,et cogitabat dolum adversus Simonem et filios ejus, and he devised treachery against Simon and his sons,ut tolleret eos.so as to destroy them.

Simon autem, perambulans civitates quæ erant in regione Judææ,Now when Simon was traveling through the cities that were in the region of Judea,et sollicitudinem gerens earum, and acting with concern for them, descendit in Jericho ipse,he went down to Jericho,et Mathathias filius ejus,he and Mattathias and Judas,et Judas, his sons, anno centesimo septuagesimo septimo,in the one hundred and seventy-seventh year, mense undecimo:in the eleventh month;hic est mensis Sabath.this is the month of Shevat.

Et suscepit eos filius Abobi in munitiunculam,And the son of Abubus received them, with deceitfulness,quæ vocatur Doch, cum dolo, into a little fortress, which is called Dok,quam ædificavit:that he had built.et fecit eis convivium magnum,And he made them a great feast,et abscondit illic viros.and he hid men there.

Et cum inebriatus esset Simon et filii ejus,And when Simon and his sons became inebriated, surrexit Ptolemæus cum suis,Ptolemy and his men rose up,et sumpserunt arma sua,and took their weapons,et intraverunt in convivium:and entered into the gathering.et occiderunt eum,And they killed him,et duos filios ejus, and his two sons,et quosdam pueros ejus:and some of his servants.

et fecit deceptionem magnam in Israël,And he committed a great treachery in Israel,et reddidit mala pro bonis.and he repaid good with evil.

Et scripsit hæc Ptolemæus,And Ptolemy wrote about these things,et misit regi ut mitteret ei exercitum in auxilium, and he sent to the king,et traderet ei regionem,so that he would send him an army to assist him,et civitates eorum, and he could deliver to him the region,et tributa.and their cities and tributes.

Et misit alios in Gazaram tollere Joannem:And he sent others to Gazara to destroy John.et tribunis misit epistolas, ut venirent ad se,And he sent letters to the tribunes to come to him,et daret eis argentum, and he would give them silver,et aurum, and gold,et dona.and gifts.

Et alios misit occupare Jerusalem et montem templi. And he sent others to occupy Jerusalem and the mountain of the temple.

Et præcurrens quidam,Now a certain one, running ahead, nuntiavit Joanni in Gazara quia periit pater ejus et fratres ejus, reported to John in Gazara, that his father and his brothers perished,et quia misit te quoque interfici.and that “he sent to kill you also.”

Ut audivit autem,But when he heard it,vehementer expavit:he was very afraid,et comprehendit viros, qui venerant perdere eum,and he apprehended the men who came to destroy him,et occidit eos:and he killed them.cognovit enim quia quærebant eum perdere. For he knew that they sought to destroy him.

Et cetera sermonum Joannis, et bellorum ejus,And the rest of the stories about John, and his wars,et bonarum virtutum, quibus fortiter gessit, and the virtuous deeds that he performed with fortitude,et ædificii murorum, quos exstruxit, and the building of the walls that he raised,et rerum gestarum ejus:and the things that he did,

ecce hæc scripta sunt in libro dierum sacerdotii ejus, behold, these have been written in the book of the days of his priesthood,ex quo factus est princeps sacerdotum post patrem suum.from the time that he became high priest, after his father.
