Et surrexit Judas,And his son Judas, qui vocabatur Machabæus,who was called Maccabeus, filius ejus, pro eo:rose up in his place.
et adjuvabant eum omnes fratres ejus,And all his brothers assisted him,et universi qui se conjunxerant patri ejus, along with all those who had joined themselves to his father.et præliabantur prælium Israël cum lætitia. And they fought the battle of Israel with rejoicing.
Et dilatavit gloriam populo suo,And he expanded the glory of his people,et induit se loricam sicut gigas, and he clothed himself with a breastplate like a giant,et succinxit se arma bellica sua in præliis, and he surrounded himself his weapons of war in battles,et protegebat castra gladio suo.and he protected the camp with his sword.
Similis factus est leoni in operibus suis,In his actions, he became like a lion,et sicut catulus leonis rugiens in venatione.and like a young lion roaring in the hunt.
Et persecutus est iniquos perscrutans eos:And he pursued the wicked and tracked them down.et qui conturbabant populum suum,And those who disturbed his people, eos succendit flammis:he burned with fire.
et repulsi sunt inimici ejus præ timore ejus,And his enemies were repelled by the fear of him,et omnes operarii iniquitatis conturbati sunt:and all the workers of iniquity were troubled.et directa est salus in manu ejus. And salvation was well-directed in his hand.
Et exacerbabat reges multos,And he provoked many kings,et lætificabat Jacob in operibus suis, and he gave joy to Jacob by his works,et in sæculum memoria ejus in benedictione.and his memory will be a blessing for all generations.
Et perambulavit civitates Juda,And he traveled through the cities of Judah,et perdidit impios ex eis,and he destroyed the impious out of them,et avertit iram ab Israël.and he turned wrath away from Israel.
Et nominatus est usque ad novissimum terræ,And he was renowned, even to the utmost part of the earth,et congregavit pereuntes.and he gathered together those who were perishing.
Et congregavit Apollonius gentes,And so Apollonius gathered together the Gentiles,et a Samaria virtutem multamwith a numerous and great army from Samaria,et magnam ad bellandum contra Israël.to make war against Israel.
Et cognovit Judas,And Judas knew about it,et exiit obviam illi:and he went forth to meet him.et percussit,And he struck himet occidit illum:and killed him.et ceciderunt vulnerati multi,And many fell down wounded,et reliqui fugerunt.and the rest fled away.
Et accepit spolia eorum:And he took away their spoils.et gladium Apollonii abstulit Judas,And Judas took possession of the sword of Apollonius,et erat pugnans in eo omnibus diebus.and he fought with it during all his days.
Et audivit Seron princeps exercitus Syriæ,And Seron, quod congregavit Judas congregationem fidelium, the leader of the army of Syria,et ecclesiam secum, heard that Judas had gathered together a company of the faithful and an assembly with him.
et ait:And he said,Faciam mihi nomen,“I will make a name for myself,et glorificabor in regno, and I will be glorified in the kingdom,et debellabo Judam, and I will defeat Judas in warfare,et eos qui cum ipso sunt, and those who are with him,qui spernebant verbum regis.who have spurned the word of the king.”
Et præparavit se:And he prepared himself.et ascenderunt cum eo castra impiorum fortes auxiliarii ut facerent vindictam in filios Israël.And the camp of the impious went up with him, with strong auxiliaries, so as to act with vengeance upon the sons of Israel.
Et appropinquaverunt usque ad Bethoron:And they approached even as far as Bethhoron.et exivit Judas obviam illi cum paucis. And Judas went forth to meet him, with a few men.
Ut autem viderunt exercitum venientem sibi obviam,But when they saw the army coming to meet them, dixerunt Judæ:they said to Judas,Quomodo poterimus pauci pugnare contra multitudinem tantam,“How will we few be able to fight against so greatet tam fortem, and so strong a multitude,et nos fatigati sumus jejunio hodie?even though we are weakened by fasting today?”
Et ait Judas:And Judas said:Facile est concludi multos in manus paucorum:“It is easy for many to be enclosed in the hands of a few,et non est differentia in conspectu Dei cæli liberare in multis, for there is no difference in the sight of the God of heaven to liberate by means of many,et in paucis:or by means of few.
quoniam non in multitudine exercitus victoria belli,For victory in warfare is not in the multitude of the army, sed de cælo fortitudo est.but in the strength from heaven.
Ipsi veniunt ad nos in multitudine contumaci,They come to us with a contemptuous multitudeet superbia, and with arrogance,ut disperdant nos,in order to destroy us,et uxores nostras, with our wiveset filios nostros, and our sons,et ut spolient nos:and to despoil us.
nos vero pugnabimus pro animabus nostris,In truth,et legibus nostris:we will fight on behalf of our souls and our laws.
et ipse Dominus conteret eos ante faciem nostram:And the Lord himself will crush them before our face.vos autem ne timueritis eos.But as for you, do not fear them.”
Ut cessavit autem loqui,And as soon as he had ceased speaking, insiluit in eos subito:he attacked them suddenly.et contritus est Seron et exercitus ejus in conspectu ipsius:And Seron and his army were crushed in his sight.
et persecutus est eum in descensu Bethoron usque in campum,And he pursued him from the descent of Bethhoron, even to the plains.et ceciderunt ex eis octingenti viri,And eight hundred of their men were cut down, reliqui autem fugerunt in terram Philisthiim.but the rest fled into the land of the Philistines.
Et cecidit timor JudæAnd the fear and dread of Judas,ac fratrum ejus,as well as his brothers,et formido super omnes gentes in circuitu eorum:fell upon all the nations around them.
et pervenit ad regem nomen ejus,And his name reached even to the king,et de præliis Judæ narrabant omnes gentes.and all the nations told stories of the battles of Judas.
Ut audivit autem rex Antiochus sermones istos,But when king Antiochus heard these accounts, iratus est animo:he was angry to his very soul.et misit,And he sentet congregavit exercitum universi regni sui,and gathered together forces from his entire kingdom, castra fortia valde:a very strong army.
et aperuit ærarium suum,And he opened his treasury,et dedit stipendia exercitui in annum:and he gave out stipends to the army for a year.et mandavit illis ut essent parati ad omnia. And he commanded them to make ready for all things.
Et vidit quod defecit pecunia de thesauris suis,And he saw that the money from his treasures had failed,et tributa regionis modica propter dissensionem et plagam quam fecit in terra, and that the tributes of the country were small,ut tolleret legitima, because of the dissension and the scourging that he had caused on earth in order to take away the legitimate laws,quæ erant a primis diebus:which had been since the first days.
et timuit ne non haberet ut semel et bis,And he feared, lest he not have enough the second time as the first,in sumptus et donaria, quæ dederat ante larga manu:for expenses and gifts, which he had given before with a liberal hand.et abundaverat super reges qui ante eum fuerant. For his excesses were more than the kings who had been before him.
Et consternatus erat animo valde,And he was alarmed to his very soul,et cogitavit ire in Persidem, and he intended to go into Persia,et accipere tributa regionum, and to take tributes from the regions,et congregare argentum multum.and to gather together much money.
Et reliquit Lysiam hominem nobilem de genere regali,And he left behind Lysias, a nobleman of royal family, super negotia regia, a flumine Euphrate usque ad flumen Ægypti,to preside over the kingdom from the river Euphrates, even to the river of Egypt,
et ut nutriret Antiochum filium suum, and to raise his son, Antiochus, donec rediret.until he would return.
Et tradidit ei medium exercitum,And he handed over to him half of the army,et elephantos:and the elephants.et mandavit ei de omnibus quæ volebat,And he commanded him concerning all that he wanted,et de inhabitantibus Judæam,and concerning the inhabitants of Judeaet Jerusalem:and Jerusalem:
et ut mitteret ad eos exercitum ad conterendam et extirpandam virtutem Israël, et reliquias Jerusalem,so that he would send an army against them to crush and to root out the virtue of Israel and the remnant of Jerusalem,et auferendam memoriam eorum de loco:and to take away the memory of them from that place,
et ut constitueret habitatores filios alienigenas in omnibus finibus eorum, and so that he would establish dwelling places for the sons of foreigners in all their parts,et sorte distribueret terram eorum.and would distribute their land by lot.
Et rex assumpsit partem exercitus residui,And so, the king took the remaining part of the army,et exivit ab Antiochia civitate regni sui anno centesimo et quadragesimo septimo:and he went forth from Antioch, the city of his kingdom, in the one hundred and forty-seventh year.et transfretavit Euphraten flumen,And he crossed over the river Euphrates,et perambulabat superiores regiones.and he traveled through the upper regions.
Et elegit Lysias Ptolemæum filium Dorymini,Then Lysias chose Ptolemy,et Nicanorem, the son of Dorymenes,et Gorgiam, and Nicanor and Gorgias, viros potentes ex amicis regis:powerful men from among the king’s friends.
et misit cum eis quadraginta millia virorum,And he sent them with forty thousand men,et septem millia equitum, and seven thousand horsemen,ut venirent in terram Juda,to enter into the land of Judah,et disperderent eam secundum verbum regis.and to destroy it, according to the word of the king.
Et processerunt cum universa virtute sua,And so, they proceeded with all their power,et venerunt, et applicuerunt Emmaum in terra campestri.and they arrived and took a position near Emmaus, in the land of the plains.
Et audierunt mercatores regionum nomen eorum:And the merchants of the regions heard of their name.et acceperunt argentum,And they took very much silver,et aurum multum valde, and gold,et pueros, and servants,et venerunt in castra ut acciperent filios Israël in servos, and they came into the camp to take the sons of Israel into servitude.et additi sunt ad eos exercitus Syriæ,And armies from Syriaet terræ alienigenarum.and from the lands of foreigners were added to them.
Et vidit Judas et fratres ejus, quia multiplicata sunt mala,And Judas and his brothers saw that evils were being multiplied,et exercitus applicabant ad fines eorum:and that armies had been positioned near their borders.et cognoverunt verba regis,And they knew the words of the king,quæ mandavit populo facere in interitum et consummationem:which ordered the people to be put to death and to be utterly consumed.
et dixerunt unusquisque ad proximum suum:And they said,Erigamus dejectionem populi nostri, each one to his neighbor,et pugnemus pro populo nostro,“Let us relieve the dejection of our people,et sanctis nostris.and let us fight on behalf of our people and our sacred places.”
Et congregatus est conventus ut essent parati in prælium,And an assembly was gathered together, so that they would be prepared for battle,et ut orarent et peterent misericordiam et miserationes.and so that they could pray and ask for mercy and compassion.
Et Jerusalem non habitabatur,Now Jerusalem was not inhabited, sed erat sicut desertum:but was like a desert.non erat qui ingrederetur et egrederetur de natis ejus. There was no one who entered or exited from among her children.Et sanctum conculcabatur:And the sanctuary was trampled upon,et filii alienigenarum erant in arce;and the sons of foreigners were in the stronghold.ibi erat habitatio gentium:This place was the habitation of the Gentiles.et ablata est voluptas a Jacob,And delight was taken away from Jacob,et defecit ibi tibia et cithara.and the music of flute and harp ceased in that place.
Et congregati sunt, et venerunt in Maspha contra Jerusalem,And they gathered together and came to Mizpah, opposite Jerusalem.quia locus orationis erat in Maspha ante in Israël.For a place of prayer was in Mizpah, in the former Israel.
Et jejunaverunt illa die,And they fasted on that day,et induerunt se ciliciis, and they clothed themselves with haircloth,et cinerem imposuerunt capiti suo,and they placed ashes on their heads,et disciderunt vestimenta sua:and they tore their garments.
et expanderunt libros legis,And they laid open the books of the law,de quibus scrutabantur gentes similitudinem simulacrorum suorum:in which the Gentiles searched for the likeness of their idols.
et attulerunt ornamenta sacerdotalia,And they brought the priestly ornaments,et primitias, and the first fruitset decimas:and tithes,et suscitaverunt Nazaræos,and they roused the Nazirites, qui impleverant dies, who had fulfilled their days.
et clamaverunt voce magna in cælum,And they cried out with a loud voice toward heaven, dicentes:saying:Quid faciemus istis,“What shall we do with these,et quo eos ducemus?and where shall we take them?
et sancta tua conculcata sunt,For your holy things have been trampledet contaminata sunt, and defiled,et sacerdotes tui facti sunt in luctum, and your priests have been in mourninget in humilitatem:and in humiliation.
et ecce nationes convenerunt adversum nos ut nos disperdant:And behold, the Nations gather together against us, to destroy us.tu scis quæ cogitant in nos.You know what they intend against us.
Quomodo poterimus subsistere ante faciem eorum,How shall we be able to stand before their face, nisi tu,unless you,Deus,O God,adjuves nos?assist us?”
Et tubis exclamaverunt voce magna. Then they sounded the trumpets with a loud call.
Et post hæc constituit Judas duces populi,And after this, Judas appointed commanders over the people:tribunos, over thousands,et centuriones, and over hundreds,et pentacontarchos, and over fifties,et decuriones.and over tens.
Et dixit his, qui ædificabant domos,And he said to those who were building houses,et sponsabant uxores,or who had betrothed wives,et plantabant vineas, who were planting vineyards,et formidolosis,or who were terribly afraid,ut redirent unusquisque in domum suam secundum legem.that they should return, each one to his own house, according to the law.
Et moverunt castra,So they moved the camp,et collocaverunt ad austrum Emmaum.and relocated to the south of Emmaus.
Et ait Judas:And Judas said:Accingimini,“Gird yourselves,et estote filii potentes, and be sons of power,et estote parati in mane, and be ready in the morning,ut pugnetis adversus nationes has quæ convenerunt adversus nos disperdere nos,so that you may fight against these nations that have assembled against us,et sancta nostra:so as to destroy us and our sacred things.
quoniam melius est nos mori in bello,For it is better for us to die in battle, quam videre mala gentis nostræ,than to see evils come to our nationet sanctorum.and to the sacred places.
Sicut autem fuerit voluntas in cælo,Nevertheless, as it shall be willed in heaven, sic fiat.so let it be.”
