Et assumpsit Gorgias quinque millia virorum,Then Gorgias took five thousand menet mille equites electos:and a thousand chosen horsemen,et moverunt castra nocte, and they moved out of the camp by night,

ut applicarent ad castra Judæorum, et percuterent eos subito:so that they might set upon the camp of the Jews and strike them suddenly.et filii, qui erant ex arce, erant illis duces. And the sons who were from the stronghold were their guides.

Et audivit Judas,And Judas heard of it,et surrexit ipseand he rose up,et potentes percutere virtutem exercituum regis, with his powerful men,qui erant in Emmaum:to strike the force from the king’s army that was in Emmaus.

adhuc enim dispersus erat exercitus a castris. For the army was still dispersed from the camp.

Et venit Gorgias in castra Judæ noctu,And Gorgias came by night, into the camp of Judas,et neminem invenit:and found no one,et quærebat eos in montibus, and he sought them in the mountains.quoniam dixit: Fugiunt hi a nobis. For he said, “These men flee from us.”

Et cum dies factus esset,And when it had become day, apparuit Judas in campo cum tribus millibus virorum tantum,Judas appeared in the plain with only three thousand men,qui tegumenta et gladios non habebant:who had neither armor nor swords.

et viderunt castra gentium valida,And they saw the strength of the camp of the Gentiles,et loricatosand the men in armor,et equitatus in circuitu eorum, and the horsemen surrounding them,et hi docti ad prælium.and that these were trained to fight.

Et ait Judas viris, qui secum erant:And Judas said to the men who were with him:Ne timueritis multitudinem eorum,“Do not be afraid of their multitude,et impetum eorum ne formidetis.and do not dread their attack.

Mementote qualiter salvi facti sunt patres nostri in mari Rubro,Remember in what way salvation came to our fathers in the Red Sea,cum sequeretur eos Pharao cum exercitu multo.when Pharaoh pursued them with a great army.

Et nunc clamemus in cælum:And now, let us cry out to heaven,et miserebitur nostri Dominus, and the Lord will have mercy on us,et memor erit testamenti patrum nostrorum, and he will remember the covenant of our fathers,et conteret exercitum istum ante faciem nostram hodie:and he will crush this army before our face this day.

et scient omnes gentes quia est qui redimat et liberet Israël.And all nations shall know that there is One who redeems and frees Israel.”

Et elevaverunt alienigenæ oculos suos,And the foreigners lifted up their eyes,et viderunt eos venientes ex adverso.and they saw them coming against them.

Et exierunt de castris in prælium,And they went out of the camp into battle,et tuba cecinerunt hi qui erant cum Juda.and those who were with Judas sounded the trumpet.

Et congressi sunt:And they came together.et contritæ sunt gentes,And the Gentiles were crushed,et fugerunt in campum.and they fled into the plains.

Novissimi autem omnes ceciderunt in gladio,But the last of them all fell by the sword,et persecuti sunt eos usque Gezeron, and they pursued them even to Gazara,et usque in campos Idumææ,and even to the plains of Idumea,et Azoti, and Azotus,et Jamniæ:and Jamnia.et ceciderunt ex illis usque ad tria millia virorum. And there fell from them as many as three thousand men.

Et reversus est Judas,And Judas returned,et exercitus ejus sequens eum.with his army following him.

Dixitque ad populum:And he said to the people:Non concupiscatis spolia:“Do not desire the spoils;quia bellum contra nos est,for there is war before us.

et GorgiasAnd Gorgias and his army are near us on the mountain.et exercitus ejus prope nos in monte:But stand firm now against our enemies, sed state nunc contra inimicos nostros, and fight against them,et expugnate eos,and you shall take the spoils afterwards,et sumetis postea spolia securi.securely.”

Et adhuc loquente Juda hæc,And while Judas was speaking these words, ecce apparuit pars quædam prospiciens de monte.behold, a certain part of them appeared, looking out from the mountain.

Et vidit Gorgias quod in fugam conversi sunt sui,And Gorgias saw that his men were put to flight,et succenderunt castra: fumus enim, and that they had set fire to the camp.qui videbatur, declarabat quod factum est.For the smoke that he saw declared what had happened.

Quibus illi conspectis timuerunt valde,When they had seen this, aspicientes simul et Judam, they became very afraid,et exercitum in campo paratum ad prælium.seeing at the same time both Judas and his army in the plains prepared to do battle.

Et fugerunt omnes in campum alienigenarum:So they all fled away into the encampment of the foreigners.

et Judas reversus est ad spolia castrorum,And Judas returned to take the spoils of the camp,et acceperunt aurum multum, and they obtained much goldet argentum, and silver,et hyacinthinum, and hyacinth,et purpuram marinam, and purple of the sea,et opes magnas.and great riches.

Et conversi,And returning, hymnum canebant, they sang a canticle,et benedicebant Deum in cælum, and they blessed God in heaven, quoniam bonus est, because he is good, quoniam in sæculum misericordia ejus.because his mercy is with every generation.

Et facta est salus magna in Israël in die illa. And so, a great salvation occurred in Israel in that day.

Quicumque autem alienigenarum evaserunt, venerunt, et nuntiaverunt Lysiæ universa quæ acciderant. But those among the foreigners who escaped went and reported to Lysias all that had happened.

Quibus ille auditis,And when he heard these things, consternatus animo deficiebat:he was discouraged, quod non qualia voluit, being alarmed to his very soul.talia contigerunt in Israël,For things had not occurred in Israel according to his wishes,et qualia mandavit rex.nor as the king had commanded.

Et sequenti anno,And,congregavit Lysias virorum electorum sexaginta millia,in the following year,et equitum quinque millia,Lysias gathered together sixty thousand chosen men and five thousand horsemen,ut debellaret eos.so that he might defeat them in warfare.

Et venerunt in Judæam,And they came into Judea,et castra posuerunt in Bethoron, and they positioned their camp in Bethzur,et occurrit illis Judas cum decem millibus viris.and Judas met them with ten thousand men.

Et viderunt exercitum fortem,And they saw the strength of the army,et oravit, and so he prayed,et dixit:and he said:Benedictus es,“Blessed are you, salvator Israël,Savior of Israel, qui contrivisti impetum potentis in manu servi tui David, who crushed the assault of the powerful by the hand of your servant David,et tradidisti castra alienigenarum in manu Jonathæ filii Saul, and who delivered up the camp of the foreigners into the hand of Jonathan, the son of Saul,et armigeri ejus.and his armor bearer.

Conclude exercitum istum in manu populi tui Israël,Enclose this army in the hand of your people Israel,et confundantur in exercitu suo et equitibus.and let them be confounded in their soldiers and their horsemen.

Da illis formidinem,Strike them with dread,et tabefac audaciam virtutis eorum, and melt away the boldness of their strength,et commoveantur contritione sua.and let them shudder in their grief.

Dejice illos gladio diligentium te:Cast them down with the sword of those who love you,et collaudent te omnes, qui noverunt nomen tuum, in hymnis.and let all who know your name praise you with hymns.”

Et commiserunt prælium:And they went forth to battle,et ceciderunt de exercitu Lysiæ quinque millia virorum.and there fell from the army of Lysias five thousand men.

Videns autem Lysias fugam suorum, et Judæorum audaciam,But Lysias, seeing their flight and the boldness of the Jews,et quod parati sunt aut vivere, aut mori fortiter, and that they were prepared either to live or to die with fortitude, abiit Antiochiam, et elegit milites, went to Antioch and chose soldiers,ut multiplicati rursus venirent in Judæam.so that they might come back to Judea with greater numbers.

Dixit autem Judas, et fratres ejus:Then Judas and his brothers said:Ecce contriti sunt inimici nostri:“Behold, our enemies have been crushed.ascendamus nunc mundare sancta, et renovare.Let us go up now to cleanse and renew the holy places.”

Et congregatus est omnis exercitus,And all the army gathered together,et ascenderunt in montem Sion.and they ascended to Mount Zion.

Et viderunt sanctificationem desertam,And they saw the sanctuary deserted,et altare profanatum, and the altar profaned,et portas exustas, and the gates burned,et in atriis virgulta nata sicut in saltuand weeds growing up in the courts, vel in montibus,as in a forest or as on the mountains,et pastophoria diruta.and the adjoining chambers demolished.

Et sciderunt vestimenta sua,And they rent their garments,et planxerunt planctu magno, and they made a great wailing,et imposuerunt cinerem super caput suum, and they placed ashes on their heads.

et ceciderunt in faciem super terram,And they fell to the ground on their faces,et exclamaverunt tubis signorum, and they sounded the trumpets of alarm,et clamaverunt in cælum.and they cried out toward heaven.

Tunc ordinavit Judas viros ut pugnarent adversus eos qui erant in arce,Then Judas numbered men to fight against those who were in the stronghold, donec emundarent sancta.until they had cleansed the holy places.

Et elegit sacerdotes sine macula,And he chose priests without blemish, voluntatem habentes in lege Dei:whose will held to the law of God.

et mundaverunt sancta,And they cleansed the holy places,et tulerunt lapides contaminationis in locum immundum.and they took away the stones of defilement to an unclean place.

Et cogitavit de altari holocaustorum,And he considered the altar of holocausts, quod profanatum erat, which had been profaned, quid de eo faceret.as to what he should do with it.

Et incidit illis consilium bonum ut destruerent illud:And a good counsel fell upon them, to destroy it,ne forte illis esset in opprobrium, lest it might become a reproach to them, quia contaminaverunt illud gentes, because the Gentiles had defiled it;et demoliti sunt illud.so they demolished it.

Et reposuerunt lapides in monte domus in loco apto,And they stored the stones in the mountain house, in a fitting place, quoadusque veniret propheta, until there should come a prophet,et responderet de eis.who would provide an answer about these.

Et acceperunt lapides integros secundum legem,Then they took whole stones, according to the law,et ædificaverunt altare novum secundum illud quod fuit prius:and they built a new altar, according to that which was before.

et ædificaverunt sancta,And they rebuilt the holy placeset quæ intra domum erant intrinsecus:and the things that were in the inner parts of the temple,et ædem, and they sanctified the templeet atria sanctificaverunt.and the courts.

Et fecerunt vasa sancta nova,And they made new holy vessels,et intulerunt candelabrum, and they brought the lampstand,et altare incensorum, and the altar of incense,et mensam, in templum.and the table into the temple.

Et incensum posuerunt super altare,And they placed incense on the altar,et accenderunt lucernas quæ super candelabrum erant, and they lit the lamps, which were on the lampstand,et lucebant in templo.and they gave light in the temple.

Et posuerunt super mensam panes,And they placed the bread on the table,et appenderunt vela, and they hung up the veils,et consummaverunt omnia opera quæ fecerant.and they completed all the works which they had begun.

Et ante matutinum surrexerunt quinta et vigesima die mensis noni (hic est mensis Casleu) centesimi quadragesimi octavi anni:And they arose before the morning, on the twenty-fifth day of the ninth month, (which is the month of Kislev) in the one hundred and forty-eighth year.

et obtulerunt sacrificium secundum legem super altare holocaustorum novum, quod fecerunt. And they offered sacrifice, according to the law, on the new altar of holocausts that they made.

Secundum tempus et secundum diem in qua contaminaverunt illud gentes,According to the time and according to the day, on which the Gentiles had contaminated it,in ipsa renovatum est in canticis, et citharis,on the same day, it was renewed with canticles,et cinyris, and lutes,et in cymbalis.and lyres, and cymbals.

Et cecidit omnis populus in faciem,And all the people fell upon their faces,et adoraverunt, and they adored,et benedixerunt in cælum eum,and they blessed, toward heaven, qui prosperavit eis.him that had prospered them.

Et fecerunt dedicationem altaris diebus octo,And they kept the dedication of the altar for eight days,et obtulerunt holocausta cum lætitia, and they offered holocausts with joy,et sacrificium salutaris et laudis.and sacrifices of salvation and praise.

Et ornaverunt faciem templi coronis aureis et scutulis,And they adorned the face of the temple with crowns of gold and small shields.et dedicaverunt portas et pastophoria,And they dedicated the gates and the adjoining chambers,et imposuerunt eis januas.and they set up doors on them.

Et facta est lætitia in populo magna valde,And there was very great rejoicing among the people,et aversum est opprobrium gentium.and the disgrace of the Gentiles was averted.

Et statuit Judas,And Judas,et fratres ejus, and his brothers,et universa ecclesia Israël,and all the assembly of Israel decreed that the day of the dedication of the altar must be kept in its time,ut agatur dies dedicationis altaris in temporibus suis ab anno in annum per dies octo a quintafrom year to year,et vigesima die mensis Casleu, for eight days, cum lætitiafrom the twenty-fifth day of the month of Kislev,et gaudio.with joy and gladness.

Et ædificaverunt in tempore illo montem Sion,And they built up, at that time, Mount Zion,et per circuitum muros altos et turres firmas, with high walls and strong towers all around, nequando venirent gentes, et conculcarent eum sicut antea fecerunt.lest the Gentiles should at any time come and trample upon it, as they did before.

Et collocavit illic exercitum,And he stationed a garrison there, to keep it,ut servarent eum,and he fortified it,et munivit eum ad custodiendum Bethsuram, ut haberet populus munitionem contra faciem Idumææ.in order to guard Bethzur, so that the people might have a fortification opposite the face of Idumea.
