Anno centesimo quinquagesimo primo,In the one hundred and fifty-first year, Demetrius, exiit Demetrius Seleuci filius ab urbe Roma, the son of Seleucus, departed from the city of Rome,et ascendit cum paucis viris in civitatem maritimam, and he went up with a few men to a maritime city,et regnavit illic.and he reigned there.

Et factum est,And it happened that,ut ingressus est domum regni patrum suorum,as he entered into the house of the kingdom of his fathers, comprehendit exercitus Antiochum et Lysiam, the army captured Antiochus and Lysias,ut adducerent eos ad eum.to bring them to him.

Et res ei innotuit,And the matter became known to him,et ait:and he said,Nolite mihi ostendere faciem eorum.“Do not show me their face.”

Et occidit eos exercitus. And so the army killed them.Et sedit Demetrius super sedem regni sui.And Demetrius sat upon the throne of his kingdom.

Et venerunt ad eum viri iniqui et impii ex Israël:And there came to him iniquitous and impious men from Israel.et Alcimus dux eorum,And Alcimus was their leader, qui volebat fieri sacerdos.who wanted to be made a priest.

Et accusaverunt populum apud regem,And they accused the people to the king, dicentes:saying:Perdidit Judas et fratres ejus omnes amicos tuos,“Judas and his brothers have destroyed all your friends,et nos dispersit de terra nostra.and he has scattered us from our land.

Nunc ergo mitte virum,Now, therefore, send a man,cui credis, whom you trust,ut eat, et videat exterminium omne quod fecit nobis, et regionibus regis:and let him go and see all the destruction he has done to us and to the regions of the king.et puniat omnes amicos ejus, et adjutores eorum. And let him punish all his friends and their helpers.”

Et elegit rex ex amicis suis Bacchidem,And so the king chose, from among his friends, Bacchides, qui dominabatur trans flumen magnum in regno, et fidelem regi:who ruled across the great river in the kingdom, and who was faithful to the king.et misit eum,And he sent him

ut videret exterminium quod fecit Judas:to see the destruction that Judas had done.sedMoreover,et Alcimum impium constituit in sacerdotium,he appointed the wicked Alcimus to the priesthood,et mandavit ei facere ultionem in filios Israël.and he commanded him to take revenge on the sons of Israel.

Et surrexerunt,And they rose up and came forth with a great army into the land of Judah.et venerunt cum exercitu magno in terram Juda:And they sent messengers,et miserunt nuntios, who spoke to Judas and his brothers with words of peace,et locuti sunt ad Judam et ad fratres ejus verbis pacificis in dolo.in deceitfulness.

Et non intenderunt sermonibus eorum:But they did not heed their words, viderunt enim quia venerunt cum exercitu magno.for they saw that they arrived with a great army.

Et convenerunt ad Alcimum et Bacchidem congregatio scribarum requirere quæ justa sunt:Then there assembled to Alcimus and Bacchides, a congregation of scribes, to seek just terms.

et primi,And first,Assidæi qui erant in filiis Israël:the Hasideans, who were among the sons of Israel,et exquirebant ab eis pacem.also sought peace from them.

Dixerunt enim:For they said,Homo sacerdos de semine Aaron venit;“A man who is a priest from the offspring of Aaron has arrived;non decipiet nos:he will not deceive us.”

et locutus est cum eis verba pacifica,And he spoke to them peaceful words,et juravit illis, and he swore to them, dicens:saying,Non inferemus vobis malum,“We will not carry out any evil against youneque amicis vestris.or your friends.”

Et crediderunt ei:And they believed him.et comprehendit ex eis sexaginta viros,And he captured sixty of their menet occidit eos in una die,and killed them in one day, secundum verbum quod scriptum est:according to the word that is written:

Carnes sanctorum tuorum,The flesh of your saints,et sanguinem ipsorum effuderunt in circuitu Jerusalem, and their blood, they have poured out all around Jerusalem,et non erat qui sepeliret.and there was no one who would bury them.

Et incubuit timor et tremor in omnem populum:Then fear and trembling hovered over all the people.quia dixerunt:For they said:Non est veritas, et judicium in eis:“There is no truth or judgment among them.transgressi sunt enim constitutum, et jusjurandum quod juraverunt. For they have transgressed the agreement and the oath that they swore.”

Et movit Bacchides castra ab Jerusalem,And Bacchides moved the camp from Jerusalem,et applicuit in Bethzecha:and he took up a position at Bethzaith.et misit,And he sentet comprehendit multos ex eis qui a se effugerant:and captured many of those who had fled from him,et quosdam de populo mactavit, and some of the people he killed in sacrifice,et in puteum magnum projecit.and he threw them into a great pit.

Et commisit regionem Alcimo,Then he committed the country to Alcimus,et reliquit cum eo auxilium in adjutorium ipsi.and he left behind troops with him to assist him.Et abiit Bacchides ad regem:And so Bacchides went away to the king.

et satis agebat Alcimus pro principatu sacerdotii sui:And Alcimus did what he pleased by means of his leadership of the priesthood.

et convenerunt ad eum omnes, qui perturbabant populum suum,And all those who disturbed the people assembled before him,et obtinuerunt terram Juda, and they obtained the land of Judah,et fecerunt plagam magnam in Israël.and they caused a great scourging in Israel.

Et vidit Judas omnia mala quæ fecit Alcimus et qui cum eo erant filiis Israël,And Judas saw all the evils that Alcimus, and those who were with him, did to the sons of Israel, multo plus quam gentes:even more than the Gentiles did.

et exiit in omnes fines Judææ in circuitu,And he went out into all the parts surrounding Judea,et fecit vindictam in viros desertores, and he took vengeance on the men who had rebelled,et cessaverunt ultra exire in regionem.and they ceased to go forth into the region any longer.

Vidit autem Alcimus quod prævaluit Judas et qui cum eo erant,But Alcimus saw that Judas, and those who were with him, prevailed.et cognovit quia non potest sustinere eos:And he knew that he was not able to withstand them.et regressus est ad regem,And so he returned to the king,et accusavit eos multis criminibus.and he accused them of many crimes.

Et misit rex Nicanorem,And the king sent Nicanor, unum ex principibus suis nobilioribus, one of his principal noblemen, qui erat inimicitias exercens contra Israël:who was a cultivator of hostility against Israel.et mandavit ei evertere populum. And he commanded him to overthrow the people.

Et venit Nicanor in Jerusalem cum exercitu magno,And Nicanor came to Jerusalem with a great army,et misit ad Judamand he sent to Judas and his brothers words of peace,et ad fratres ejus verbis pacificis cum dolo, with deceitfulness,

dicens:saying:Non sit pugna inter me et vos:“Let there be no fighting between me and you.veniam cum viris paucis,I will come with a few men,ut videam facies vestras cum pace.to see your faces with peace.”

Et venit ad Judam,And he came to Judas,et salutaverunt se invicem pacifice:and they greeted one another in turns, peaceably.et hostes parati erant rapere Judam. And the enemies were prepared to abduct Judas.

Et innotuit sermo Judæ quoniam cum dolo venerat ad eum:And the plan became known to Judas, that he came to him with deceit.et conterritus est ab eo,And so he became very afraid of him,et amplius noluit videre faciem ejus.and he was no longer willing to see his face.

Et cognovit Nicanor quoniam denudatum est consilium ejus:And Nicanor knew that his plan had been exposed,et exivit obviam Judæ in pugnam juxta Capharsalama.and he went out to meet Judas in battle near Capharsalama.

Et ceciderunt de Nicanoris exercitu fere quinque millia viri,And there fell of the army of Nicanor nearly five thousand men,et fugerunt in civitatem David.and they fled into the city of David.

Et post hæc verba ascendit Nicanor in montem Sion:And after these events,et exierunt de sacerdotibus populi salutare eum in pace,Nicanor ascended to mount Zion.et demonstrare ei holocautomata,And some of the priests of the people went out to greet him in peace,quæ offerebantur pro rege.and to show him the holocausts that were offered for the king.

Et irridens sprevit eos,But he mocked and despised them,et polluit:and he defiled them.et locutus est superbe,And he spoke arrogantly,

et juravit cum ira,and he swore with anger, dicens:saying,Nisi traditus fuerit Judas et exercitus ejus in manus meas,“Unless Judas and his army have been delivered into my hands, continuo cum regressus fuero in pace, when I return in peace, succendam domum istam.I will burn this house.”Et exiit cum ira magna. And he went out with great anger.

Et intraverunt sacerdotes,And the priests went in and stood before the face of the altar and the temple.et steterunt ante faciem altaris et templi,And weeping,et flentes dixerunt:they said:

Tu,“You,Domine,O Lord, elegisti domum istam ad invocandum nomen tuum in ea,have chosen this house so that your name may be invoked in it,ut esset domus orationis et obsecrationis populo tuo:so that it may be a house of prayer and supplication for your people.

fac vindictam in homine isto et exercitu ejus,Accomplish vindication with this man and his army,et cadant in gladio:and let them fall by the sword.memento blasphemias eorum,Remember their blasphemies,et ne dederis eis ut permaneant.and do not allow them to continue.”

Et exiit Nicanor ab Jerusalem,Then Nicanor departed from Jerusalem,et castra applicuit ad Bethoron:and he positioned his camp near Bethhoron,et occurrit illi exercitus Syriæ.and an army of Syria met him there.

Et Judas applicuit in Adarsa cum tribus millibus viris:And Judas took a position in Adasa with three thousand men.et oravit Judas,And Judas prayed,et dixit:and he said:

Qui missi erant a rege Sennacherib,“O Lord,Domine, when those who were sent by king Sennacherib blasphemed against you, quia blasphemaverunt te,an angel went outexiit angelus, and struck one hundredet percussit ex eis centum octoginta quinque millia:and eighty-five thousand of them.

sic contere exercitum istum in conspectu nostro hodie:Just so, crush this army in our sight today,et sciant ceteri quia male locutus est super sancta tua:and so let the others know that he has spoken evil against your sanctuary.et judica illum secundum malitiam illius. And judge him according to his wickedness.”

Et commiserunt exercitus prælium tertiadecima die mensis Adar:And the armies were sent into battle together on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar.et contrita sunt castra Nicanoris,And the camp of Nicanor was crushed,et cecidit ipse primus in prælio.and he himself was among the first slain in the battle.

Ut autem vidit exercitus ejus quia cecidisset Nicanor,So then, projecerunt arma sua, when his army saw that Nicanor had fallen,et fugerunt:they threw away their weapons and fled.

et persecuti sunt eos viam unius diei ab Adazer usquequo veniatur in Gazara,And they pursued them for one day’s journey from Adasa, even until one comes into Gazara,et tubis cecinerunt post eos cum significationibus:and they sounded the trumpets after them with signals.

et exierunt de omnibus castellis Judææ in circuitu,And they went forth from all of the towns all around Judea.et ventilabant eos cornibus,And they herded them with the horns,et convertebantur iterum ad eos,and they turned back again to them,et ceciderunt omnes gladio, and they were all felled with the sword,et non est relictus ex eis nec unus.and there was not so much as one of them left behind.

Et acceperunt spolia eorum in prædam:And they took their spoils like a prey,et caput Nicanoris amputaverunt, and they cut off the head of Nicanor,et dexteram ejus, and his right hand, quam extenderat superbe, which he had extended arrogantly,et attulerunt, and they brought it,et suspenderunt contra Jerusalem.and hung it up opposite Jerusalem.

Et lætatus est populus valde,And the people rejoiced exceedingly,et egerunt diem illam in lætitia magna.and they spent that day in great joy.

Et constituit agi omnibus annis diem istam tertiadecima die mensis Adar. And he established that this day should be kept every year, on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar.

Et siluit terra Juda dies paucos. And the land of Judah was quieted for a brief time.
