Et rex Antiochus perambulabat superiores regiones,And king Antiochus was traveling through the upper regions,et audivit esse civitatem Elymaidem in Perside nobilissimam, et copiosam in argento et auro, and he heard that the city of Elymais in Persia was very noble and abundant in silver and gold,
templumque in ea locuples valde, and that the temple in it was very opulent, and that there were,et illic velamina aurea,in that place, coverings of gold,et loricæ, et scuta, and breastplates and shields,quæ reliquit Alexander Philippi rex Macedo, which Alexander, the son of Philip, king of Macedonia, qui regnavit primus in Græcia.who reigned first in Greece, had left behind.
Et venit,So he cameet quærebat capere civitatem, and sought to seize the cityet deprædari eam:and to pillage it.et non potuit,And he was not able, quoniam innotuit sermo his qui erant in civitate:because this plan became known to those who were in the city.
et insurrexerunt in prælium,And they rose up in battle,et fugit inde, and he fled away from there,et abiit cum tristitia magna, and he departed with great sadness,et reversus est in Babyloniam.and he returned into Babylon.
Et venit qui nuntiaret ei in Perside,And someone arrived to report to him in Persia, quia fugata sunt castra quæ erant in terra Juda:that those who were in the land of Judah were forced to flee the camp,
et quia abiit Lysias cum virtute forti in primis, and that Lysias went forth with a particularly strong army,et fugatus est a facie Judæorum, and he was forced to flee before the face of the Jews,et invaluerunt armis, et viribus, and that they were strengthened by the weapons,et spoliis multis, and resources,quæ ceperunt de castris, quæ exciderunt:and many spoils which they seized from the camps they demolished,
et quia diruerunt abominationem, and that they had destroyed the abomination, quam ædificaverat super altare quod erat in Jerusalem:which he had established on the altar that was in Jerusalem,et sanctificationem, and that the sanctuary, sicut prius, just as before, circumdederunt muris excelsis, had been encircled with high walls, sedalong with Bethzur,et Bethsuram civitatem suam.his city.
Et factum est ut audivit rex sermones istos,And it happened that, expavit, when the king heard these words,et commotus est valde:he was terrified and very moved.et decidit in lectum,And he fell down on his bed,et incidit in languorem præ tristitia, and he fell into feebleness out of grief.quia non factum est ei sicut cogitabat. For it had not happened to him as he had intended.
Et erat illic per dies multos,And he was in that place through many days.quia renovata est in eo tristitia magna,For a great grief was renewed in him,et arbitratus est se mori.and he concluded that he would die.
Et vocavit omnes amicos suos,And he called all his friends,et dixit illis:and he said to them:Recessit somnus ab oculis meis,“Sleep has withdrawn from my eyes,et concidi, and I am declining,et corrui corde præ sollicitudine:and my heart has collapsed out of anxiety.
et dixi in corde meo:And I said in my heart:In quantam tribulationem deveni,How much trouble has come to me,et in quos fluctus tristitiæ,and what floods of sorrow there are,in qua nunc sum:where I am now!qui jucundus eram,I used to be cheerfulet dilectus in potestate mea!and beloved in my power!
Nunc vero reminiscor malorum quæ feci in Jerusalem,Truly, undenow,et abstuli omnia spolia aureaI remember the evils that I did in Jerusalem,et argentea quæ erant in ea,from which place I also took away all the spoils of gold and silver that were in it,et misi auferre habitantes Judæam sine causa.and I sent to carry away the inhabitants of Judah without cause.
Cognovi ergo quia propterea invenerunt me mala ista:Therefore, I know that it is because of this that these evils have found me.et ecce pereo tristitia magna in terra aliena. And behold, I perish with great sorrow in a foreign land.”
Et vocavit Philippum,Then he called Philip, unum de amicis suis, one of his friends,et præposuit eum super universum regnum suum:and he placed him first over all his kingdom.
et dedit ei diadema,And he gave him the diadem,et stolam suam, and his robe,et annulum, and his ring,ut adduceret Antiochum filium suum,so that he would guide Antiochus, his son,et nutriret eum, et regnaret.and raise him, and so that he would reign.
Et mortuus est illic Antiochus rex anno centesimo quadragesimo nono. And king Antiochus died there, in the one hundred and forty-ninth year.
Et cognovit Lysias quoniam mortuus est rex,And Lysias knew that the king was dead,et constituit regnare Antiochum filium ejus, and he appointed Antiochus, his son, to reign, quem nutrivit adolescentem:whom he had raised from adolescence.et vocavit nomen ejus Eupator. And he called his name Eupator.
Et hi qui erant in arce, concluserant Israël in circuitu sanctorum:And those who were in the stronghold had enclosed the Israelites by surrounding the holy places.et quærebant eis mala semper, et firmamentum gentium. And they continually sought to do evil to them and to support the Gentiles.
Et cogitavit Judas disperdere eos:And Judas intended to disperse them.et convocavit universum populum,And he called together all the people,ut obsiderent eos.in order to besiege them.
Et convenerunt simul, et obsederunt eos anno centesimo quinquagesimo,And they came together and besieged them in the one hundred and fiftieth year,et fecerunt ballistas et machinas.and they made catapults and other machines.
Et exierunt quidam ex eis qui obsidebantur:And certain ones of these, who were besieged, escaped.et adjunxerunt se illis aliqui impii ex Israël,And some of the impious out of Israel joined themselves to them.
et abierunt ad regem,And they went to the king,et dixerunt:and they said:Quousque non facis judicium,“How long will you not act with judgmentet vindicas fratres nostros?and vindicate our brothers?
Nos decrevimus servire patri tuo,We resolved to serve your father,et ambulare in præceptis ejus, and to walk according to his precepts,et obsequi edictis ejus:and to obey his edicts.
et filii populi nostri propter hoc alienabant se a nobis,And because of this,et quicumque inveniebantur ex nobis, the sons of our people have alienated themselves from us,interficiebantur, and they have put to death as many of us as they could find,et hæreditates nostræ diripiebantur.and they have torn apart our inheritances.
Et non ad nos tantum extenderunt manum,And they have not extended their hand against us only, sed et in omnes fines nostros:but also against all within our borders.
et ecce applicuerunt hodie ad arcem Jerusalem occupare eam,And behold, this day they have taken a position near the stronghold of Jerusalem to occupy it,et munitionem Bethsuram munierunt:and they have fortified the stronghold of Bethzur.
et nisi præveneris eos velocius,And, unless you quickly act to prevent them, majora quam hæc facient, they will do greater things than these,et non poteris obtinere eos.and you will not be able to subdue them.”
Et iratus est rex, ut hæc audivit:And the king was angry when he heard this.et convocavit omnes amicos suos,And he called together all his friends,et principes exercitus sui,and the leaders of his army,et eos qui super equites erant:and those who were over the horsemen.
sed et de regnis aliis et de insulis maritimis venerunt ad eum exercitus conductitii. But there even came to him mercenary armies from other kingdoms and from the islands of the sea.
Et erat numerus exercitus ejus, centum millia peditum,And the number of his army was one hundred thousand footmen,et viginti millia equitum, and twenty thousand horsemen,et elephanti triginta duo, docti ad prælium.and thirty-two elephants trained for battle.
Et venerunt per Idumæam,And they traveled through Idumea,et applicuerunt ad Bethsuram, and they took a position near Bethzur.et pugnaverunt dies multos:And they fought for many days,et fecerunt machinas, and they made machines of war.et exierunt,But they came outet succenderunt eas igni, and burnt them with fire,et pugnaverunt viriliter.and they fought manfully.
Et recessit Judas ab arce,And Judas departed from the stronghold,et movit castra ad Bethzacharam contra castra regis.and he moved the camp to Bethzechariah, opposite the camp of the king.
Et surrexit rex ante lucem,And the king rose up, before it was light,et concitavit exercitus in impetum contra viam Bethzacharam:and he forced his troops to march toward the way of Bethzechariah.et comparaverunt se exercitus in prælium,And the armies prepared themselves for battle,et tubis cecinerunt:and they sounded the trumpets.
et elephantis ostenderunt sanguinem uvæ et mori,And they showed the elephants the blood of grapes and mulberries,ad acuendos eos in prælium:to provoke them to fight.
et diviserunt bestias per legiones,And they divided the beasts by the legions,et astiterunt singulis elephantis mille viri in loricis concatenatis, and there stood by every elephant a thousand men,et galeæ æreæ in capitibus eorum:with shields joined together and with brass helmets on their heads.et quingenti equites ordinati unicuique bestiæ electi erant. And five hundred well-ordered horsemen were chosen for every beast.
Hi ante tempus,These were ready beforehand, ubicumque erat bestia, and wherever the beast was,ibi erant:they were there;et quocumque ibat, and whenever it moved, ibant, they moved,et non discedebant ab ea.and they did not depart from it.
Sed et turres ligneæ super eos firmæ protegentes super singulas bestias:Moreover, upon them there were strong wooden turrets, watching over every beast,et super eas machinæ:with machines upon them,et super singulas viri virtutis triginta duo,and on them were thirty-two valiant men,qui pugnabant desuper:who fought from above,et Indus magister bestiæ.and an Indian to rule each beast.
Et residuum equitatum hincAnd the rest of the horsemen,et inde statuit in duas partes,he stationed here and there, tubis exercitum commovere,in two parts,et perurgere constipatos in legionibus ejus.with trumpets to stir up the army and to urge on those who were slow to move within its legions.
Et ut refulsit sol in clypeos aureosAnd so,et æreos, when the sun reflected off the shields of gold and of brass, resplenduerunt montes ab eis,the mountains were resplendent from them,et resplenduerunt sicut lampades ignis.and they glowed like lamps of fire.
Et distincta est pars exercitus regis per montes excelsos,And part of the king’s army was divided to the high mountains,et alia per loca humilia:and the other part to the low places.et ibant caute et ordinate. And they went forth with order and caution.
Et commovebantur omnes inhabitantes terram a voce multitudinis,And all the inhabitants of the land were shaken at the voice of their multitude,et incessu turbæ,and at the advance of the company,et collisione armorum:and at the clash of the armor.erat enim exercitus magnus valde,For the army was very greatet fortis.and strong.
Et appropiavit Judas et exercitus ejus in prælium,And Judas and his army drew near for battle.et ceciderunt de exercitu regis sexcenti viri. And there fell of the king’s army six hundred men.
Et vidit Eleazar filius Saura unam de bestiis loricatam loricis regis:And Eleazar, the son of Saura, saw one of the beasts shielded with the king’s shield,et erat eminens super ceteras bestias, and it was higher than the other beasts.et visum est ei quod in ea esset rex:So it seemed to him that the king must be on it.
et dedit se ut liberaret populum suum,And he gave himself for the freedom of his people,et acquireret sibi nomen æternum.and to obtain for himself a name in eternity.
Et cucurrit ad eam audacter in medio legionis,And he ran up to it boldly in the midst of the legion, interficiens a dextris et a sinistris, killing on the right and on the left,et cadebant ab eo huc atque illuc.and they fell down before him on this side and that.
Et ivit sub pedes elephantis,And he went between the feet of the elephant,et supposuit se ei,and put himself under it,et occidit eum:and he killed it.et cecidit in terram super ipsum,And it fell to the ground upon him,et mortuus est illic.and he died there.
Et videntes virtutem regis,And,et impetum exercitus ejus, seeing the strength of the king and the forcefulness of his army, diverterunt se ab eis.they turned themselves away from them.
Castra autem regis ascenderunt contra eos in Jerusalem,But the king’s camp went up against them in Jerusalem.et applicuerunt castra regis ad Judæam,And the king’s camp took up a position near Judeaet montem Sion.and Mount Zion.
Et fecit pacem cum his qui erant in Bethsura:And he made peace with those who were in Bethzur.et exierunt de civitate,And they went out of the city, quia non erant eis ibi alimenta conclusis, because they had no provisions in their confinement, quia sabbata erant terræ.for it was the Sabbath of the land.
Et comprehendit rex Bethsuram:And the king captured Bethzur,et constituit illic custodiam servare eam.and he stationed a garrison there to keep it.
Et convertit castra ad locum sanctificationis dies multos:And he turned his camp against the place of sanctification for many days.et statuit illic ballistas,And he stationed there catapultset machinas, and other machines:et ignis jacula, machines to cast fire,et tormenta ad lapides jactandos, and windlasses to cast stoneset spicula, and darts,et scorpios ad mittendas sagittas, and small catapults to cast arrowset fundibula.and metal.
Fecerunt autem et ipsi machinas adversus machinas eorum,But they also made machines against their machines,et pugnaverunt dies multos.and they fought for many days.
Escæ autem non erant in civitate,But there were no foods in the city,eo quod septimus annus esset:because it was the seventh year.et qui remanserant in Judæa de gentibus,And those who had remained in Judea were from the Gentiles, consumpserant reliquias eorum, quæ repositæ fuerant.so they consumed all that they had left from what had been stored up.
Et remanserunt in sanctis viri pauci,And there remained in the holy places a few men, quoniam obtinuerat eos fames:for the famine had prevailed over them.et dispersi sunt unusquisque in locum suum. And they were scattered, each one to his own place.
Et audivit Lysias quod Philippus,Then Lysias heard that Philip, quem constituerat rex Antiochus cum adhuc viveret, whom king Antiochus had appointed, when he was still alive,ut nutriret Antiochum filium suum,to raise his son, Antiochus,et regnaret, and to reign,
reversus esset a Perside et Media, had returned from Persia and Media,et exercitus qui abierat cum ipso, with the army that went with him,et quia quærebat suscipere regni negotia:and that he sought to take upon himself the affairs of the kingdom.
festinavit ire, et dicere ad regem, et duces exercitus:He hurried to go and to say to the king and the commanders of the army:Deficimus quotidie,“We are weakened every day,et esca nobis modica est;and our food is limited,et locus, quem obsidemus, and the place that we besiege is strong, est munitus, et incumbit nobis ordinare de regno.and it is incumbent upon us to put the kingdom in order.
Nunc itaque demus dextras hominibus istis,And so now,et faciamus cum illis pacem, let us bestow a pledge to these men,et cum omni gente eorum:and make peace with them and with all their nation.
et constituamus illis ut ambulent in legitimis suis sicut prius:And let us establish for them that they may walk according to their own laws, propter legitima enim ipsorum, just as before. For, because of their laws,quæ despeximus, which we despised, irati sunt, et fecerunt omnia hæc.they have become angry and have done all these things.”
Et placuit sermo in conspectu regis et principum:And the idea was pleasing in the sight of the king and the leaders.et misit ad eos pacem facere,And he sent to them to make peace.et receperunt illam. And they accepted it.
Et juravit illis rex et principes,And the king and the leaders swore to them.et exierunt de munitione. And they went out of the stronghold.
Et intravit rex montem Sion,Then the king entered into Mount Zion,et vidit munitionem loci:and saw the fortifications of the place,et rupit citius juramentum quod juravit, and so he abruptly broke the oath that he had sworn,et mandavit destruere murum in gyro.and he commanded the surrounding wall to be destroyed.
Et discessit festinanter,And he departed in hasteet reversus est Antiochiam, and returned to Antioch,et invenit Philippum dominantem civitati:where he found Philip ruling the city.et pugnavit adversus eum,And he fought against himet occupavit civitatem.and occupied the city.
