Et nunc hic sumus orantes pro vobis. And now, in this place, we are praying for you.

Regnante Demetrio,When Demetrius reigned, anno centesimo sexagesimo nono,in the one hundred and sixty-ninth year, nos Judæi scripsimus vobis in tribulatione et impetu qui supervenit nobis in istis annis,we Jews wrote to you during the tribulation and assaults which overcame us in those years,ex quo recessit Jason a sancta terra, et a regno.from the time that Jason withdrew from the holy land and from the kingdom.

Portam succenderunt,They burnt the gate,et effuderunt sanguinem innocentem:and they shed innocent blood.et oravimus ad Dominum, et exauditi sumus,And we prayed to the Lord and were heard,et obtulimus sacrificium et similaginem, and we brought forth sacrifices and fine wheat flour,et accendimus lucernas, et proposuimus panes.and we kindled the lamps and set forth the loaves.

Et nunc frequentate dies scenopegiæ mensis Casleu. And now, celebrate the days of shelters in the month of Kislev.

Anno centesimo octogesimo octavo,In the one hundred and eighty-eighth year, populus qui est Jerosolymis et in Judæa,from the people who are at Jerusalem and in Judea, senatusque et Judas, and from the Senate and Judas:Aristobolo magistro Ptolemæi regis,to Aristobulus, the magistrate of king Ptolemy, qui est de genere christorum sacerdotum, who is of the ancestry of anointed priests,et his qui in Ægypto sunt Judæis,and to those Jews who are in Egypt:salutem et sanitatem.greetings and good health.

De magnis periculis a Deo liberati,Having been freed by God from great peril, magnifice gratias agimus ipsi,we give thanks to him greatly, utpote qui adversus talem regem dimicavimus.in as much as we have been struggling against so great a king.

Ipse enim ebullire fecit de Perside eos qui pugnaverunt contra nos et sanctam civitatem. For he caused those who fought against us and against the holy city to burst forth from Persia.

Nam cum in Perside esset dux ipse,For when the commander himself was in Persia,et cum ipso immensus exercitus, and with him an immense army, cecidit in templo Naneæ,he fell in the temple of Nanea, consilio deceptus sacerdotum Naneæ.having been deceived by the counsel of the priests of Nanea.

Etenim cum ea habitaturus venit ad locum AntiochusFor Antiochus also came to the place with his friends,et amici ejus,as if to live with her,et ut acciperet pecunias multas dotis nomine.and so that he would receive much money in the name of a dowry.

Cumque proposuissent eas sacerdotes Naneæ,And when the priests of Nanea had made the proposal,et ipse cum paucis ingressus esset intra ambitum fani, and he had entered with a few men into the vestibule of the shrine, clauserunt templum, they closed the temple,

cum intrasset Antiochus:after Antiochus had entered.apertoque occulto aditu templi,And throwing open a hidden entrance to the temple, mittentes lapides percusserunt ducem et eos qui cum eo erant:they cast stones, and they struck the leader and those who were with him. And,et diviserunt membratim, et capitibus amputatis foras projecerunt.having severed their limbs and cut off their heads, they threw them outside.

Per omnia benedictus Deus,Blessed be God through all things, qui tradidit impios.who has delivered up the impious.

Facturi igitur quintaTherefore,et vigesima die mensis Casleu purificationem templi, establishing the purification of the temple on the twenty-fifth day of the month of Kislev, necessarium duximus significare vobis:we considered it necessary to signify this to you, utso that you,et vos quoque agatis diem scenopegiæ,likewise,et diem ignis, may keep the day of shelters, qui datus est quando Nehemias ædificato temploand the day of the fire that was given when Nehemiah offered sacrifice,et altari obtulit sacrificia.after the temple and the altar had been built.

Nam cum in Persidem ducerentur patres nostri,For when our fathers were led into Persia, the priests, sacerdotes qui tunc cultores Dei erant, who at that time were worshippers of God,acceptum ignem de altari occulte absconderunt in valle, secretly took the fire from the altar, and they kept it hidden in a valley, ubi erat puteus altus et siccus, where there was a deep and dry pit,et in eo contutati sunt eum,and they kept it safe in that place, ita ut omnibus ignotus esset locus.in such a way that the place would be unknown to all.

Cum autem præterissent anni multi,But when many years had passed,et placuit Deo ut mitteretur Nehemias a rege Persidis, and it pleased God that Nehemiah should be sent by the king of Persia, nepotes sacerdotum illorum qui absconderant,he sent some of the posterity of those priests who had hidden it to seek the fire.misit ad requirendum ignem:And,et sicut narraverunt nobis, just as they told us,non invenerunt ignem, they did not find fire, sed aquam crassam.but only deep water.

Et jussit eos haurire, et afferre sibi:Then he ordered them to draw it up and to carry it to him.et sacrificia quæ imposita erant,And the priest, Nehemiah, ordered the sacrifices, jussit sacerdos Nehemias aspergi ipsa aqua:which had been set out, to be sprinkled with the same water,et ligna, et quæ erant superposita.both the wood and those things that were placed on it.

Utque hoc factum est,And when this was done,et tempus affuit quo sol refulsit, and the time came when the sun shined brightly, qui prius erat in nubilo, which before was in a cloud, accensus est ignis magnus, there was kindled a great fire, ita ut omnes mirarentur.so much so that all were filled with wonder.

Orationem autem faciebant omnes sacerdotes,But all the priests were reciting prayer, dum consummaretur sacrificium, while the sacrifice was being consumed,Jonatha inchoante, with Jonathan beginningceteris autem respondentibus.and the rest answering.

Et Nehemiæ erat oratio hunc habens modum:And the prayer of Nehemiah was held in this way:Domine Deus omnium creator,“O Lord God, Creator of all, terribilis et fortis, terrible and strong, justus et misericors, just and merciful, qui solus est bonus rex,you alone are the good King.

solus præstans,You alone are excellent, solus justus et omnipotens et æternus, you alone are just, and all-powerful, and eternal, qui liberas Israël de omni malo;who frees Israel from all evil, qui fecisti patres electos, et sanctificasti eos:who created the chosen fathers and sanctified them.

accipe sacrificium pro universo populo tuo Israël,Receive the sacrifice on behalf of all of your people Israel,et custodi partem tuam, and preserveet sanctifica.and sanctify your portion.

Congrega dispersionem nostram,Gather together our dispersion, libera eos qui serviunt gentibus, free those who are in servitude to the Gentiles,et contemptos et abominatos respice, and respect those who are despised and abhorred,ut sciant gentes quia tu es Deus noster.so that the Gentiles may know that you are our God.

Afflige opprimentes nos,Afflict those who, in their arrogance,et contumeliam facientes in superbia.are oppressing us and treating us abusively.

Constitue populum tuum in loco sancto tuo,Establish your people in your holy place, sicut dixit Moyses.just as Moses said.”

Sacerdotes autem psallebant hymnos usquequo consumptum esset sacrificium. And so the priests sang hymns until the sacrifice had been consumed.

Cum autem consumptum esset sacrificium,But when the sacrifice had been consumed,ex residua aqua Nehemias jussit lapides majores perfundi.Nehemiah ordered the remainder of the water to be poured upon the great stones.

Quod ut factum est,When this had been done,ex eis flamma accensa est:a flame was kindled from them, sed ex lumine quod refulsit ab altari, consumpta est.but it was consumed by the light that shined brightly from the altar.

Ut vero manifestata est res,In truth, when this thing became known, renuntiatum est regi Persarum quod in loco in quo ignem absconderent hi qui translati fuerant sacerdotes,it was reported to the king of Persia that in the place where the fire had been hidden by those priests who had been led away, aqua apparuit, water appeared,de qua Nehemias,by which Nehemiah,et qui cum eo erant, purificaverunt sacrificia.and those who were with him, purified the sacrifices.

Considerans autem rex,But the king,et rem diligenter examinans, considering and examining the matter diligently, fecit ei templum, made a temple for it,ut probaret quod factum erat:so that he might study what had happened.

et cum probasset,And when he had studied it,sacerdotibus donavit multa bona,he gave the priests many goods and presents,et alia atque alia munera:of one kind or another,et accipiens manu sua,and using his own hands, tribuebat eis.he distributed these.

Appellavit autem Nehemias hunc locum Nephthar,And Nehemiah called this place Nephthar, quod interpretatur Purificatio:which is interpreted as Purification.vocatur autem apud plures Nephi. But with many it is called Nephi.
