Machabæus autem, et qui cum eo erant,But Maccabeus and those who were with him,Domino se protegente, the Lord protecting them, templum quidem et civitatem recepit:even recovered the temple and the city.
aras autem quas alienigenæ per plateas exstruxerant,Then he demolished the altars, which the foreigners had constructed in the streets, itemque delubra demolitus est:and likewise the shrines.
et purgato templo,And, having purged the temple, aliud altare fecerunt, they made another altar. And,et de ignitis lapidibus igne concepto sacrificia obtulerunt post biennium, taking glowing stones from the fire, they began to offer sacrifices again after two years,et incensum, et lucernas, and they set out incense,et panes propositionis posuerunt.and lamps, and the bread of the Presence.
Quibus gestis,Having done these things, rogabant Dominum prostrati in terram, they petitioned the Lord,ne amplius talibus malis inciderent:lying prostrate on the ground, sed et,lest they should fall once more into such evils, siquando peccassent, but also,ut ab ipso mitius corriperentur,if they should at any time sin,et non barbaristhat they might be chastised by him more mildly,ac blasphemis hominibus traderentur.and not be delivered over to barbarians and blasphemous men.
Qua die autem templum ab alienigenis pollutum fuerat,Then, on the day that the temple had been polluted by the foreigners, contigit eadem die purificationem fieri,it happened on the same day that the purification was accomplished, vigesima quinta mensis qui fuit Casleu.on the twenty-fifth day of the month, which was Kislev.
Et cum lætitia diebus octo egerunt in modum tabernaculorum, recordantes quod ante modicum temporis diem solemnem tabernaculorum in montibus et in speluncis more bestiarum egerant. And they celebrated for eight days with joy, in the manner of the Feast of Tabernacles, remembering that, a little time before, they had celebrated the solemn days of the Feast of Tabernacles in mountains and caves, in the manner of wild beasts.
Propter quod thyrsos,Because of this,et ramos virides, they now preferred to carry boughs and green branches and palms,et palmas præferebant ei qui prosperavit mundari locum suum.for him who had prospered the cleansing of his place.
Et decreverunt communi præceptoAnd they decreed a common precept and decree,et decreto universæ genti Judæorum omnibus annis agere dies istos.that all the people of the Jews should keep those days every year.
Et Antiochi quidem,Now certainly Antiochus, qui appellatus est Nobilis, who was called illustrious, vitæ excessus ita se habuit.held himself to be so at the passing of his life.
Nunc autem de Eupatore Antiochi impii filio quæ gesta sunt narrabimus,But next we will describe what happened with Eupator, the son of the impious Antiochus, breviantes mala quæ in bellis gesta sunt.abridging the evils which happened in the wars.
Hic enim suscepto regno,For when he assumed the kingdom, constituit super negotia regni Lysiam quemdam,he appointed, over the affairs of the kingdom, a certain Lysias,Phœnicis et Syriæ militiæ principem.leader of the Phoenician and Syrian military.
Nam Ptolemæus,For Ptolemy, qui dicebatur Macer, who was called Macer, justi tenax erga Judæos esse constituit, decided to be strict in justice toward the Jews,et præcipue propter iniquitatem quæ facta erat in eos, especially because of the iniquity that had been done to them,et pacifice agere cum eis.and to deal with them peacefully.
Sed ob hoc accusatus ab amicis apud Eupatorem,But, for this reason, he was accused before Eupator by his friends, cum frequenter proditor audiret, and was frequently called a traitor.eo quod Cyprum creditam sibi a Philometore deseruisset,For he had deserted Cyprus, which Philometor had entrusted to him.et ad Antiochum Nobilem translatus etiam ab eo recessisset,And so, transferring to Antiochus the illustrious, he even withdrew from him.veneno vitam finivit. And he ended his life by poison.
Gorgias autem cum esset dux locorum,But Gorgias, when he was the leader of the places, assumptis advenis, taking to him new arrivals, frequenter Judæos debellabat.frequently made war against the Jews.
Judæi vero qui tenebant opportunas munitiones,In truth, the Jews, who held the strategic fortresses, fugatos ab Jerosolymis suscipiebant, took in those who were fleeing from Jerusalem,et bellare tentabant.and they attempted to make war.
Hi vero qui erant cum Machabæo,In fact, those who were with Maccabeus, per orationes Dominum rogantes ut esset sibi adjutor, petitioning the Lord through prayers to be their helper, impetum fecerunt in munitiones Idumæorum:made a forceful attack upon the fortresses of the Idumeans.
multaque vi insistentes,And, persevering with much force, loca obtinuerunt, occurrentes interemerunt, they obtained the places, killing those they met,et omnes simul non minus viginti millibus trucidaverunt.and cutting down in all no less than twenty thousand.
Quidam autem cum confugissent in duas turres valde munitas,Yet certain ones, when they had fled into two well-fortified towers, omnem apparatum ad repugnandum habentes, gave all appearance of fighting back.
Machabæus ad eorum expugnationem relicto Simone,So Maccabeus left behind Simon and Joseph, and likewise Zachaeus,et Josepho, itemque Zachæo,and those who were with them, to fight against them.eisque qui cum ipsis erant satis multis, ipse ad eas quæ amplius perurgebant pugnas conversus est.And since those who were with them were sufficient in number, he turned back to those who attacked more forcefully.
Hi vero qui cum Simone erant,In truth, cupiditate ducti, those who were with Simon,a quibusdam qui in turribus erant, being led by avarice, suasi sunt pecunia:were persuaded by money from certain ones who were in the towers.et septuaginta millibus didrachmis acceptis,And accepting seventy thousand didrachmas, dimiserunt quosdam effugere.they allowed certain ones to flee.
Cum autem Machabæo nuntiatum esset quod factum est,But when what was done had been reported to Maccabeus, principibus populi congregatis accusavit quod pecunia fratres vendidissent, gathering together the leaders of the people, he accused those who had sold their brothers for money, adversariis eorum dimissis.having sent away their adversaries.
Hos igitur proditores factos interfecit,Therefore, he executed these who had acted as traitors,et confestim duas turres occupavit.and he quickly captured the two towers.
Armis autem ac manibus omnia prospere agendo in duabus munitionibus plus quam viginti millia peremit. And so, having success in arms and in all things that he took in hand, he destroyed more than twenty thousand in the two fortresses.
At Timotheus,And Timothy, qui prius a Judæis fuerat superatus, who had been overcome by the Jews before, convocato exercitu peregrinæ multitudinis, calling together a multitude of foreign troopset congregato equitatu Asiano, and gathering horsemen from Asia, advenit quasi armis Judæam capturus.arrived as if he would capture Judea with arms.
Machabæus autem et qui cum ipso erant,But Maccabeus, appropinquante illo, and those who were with him, deprecabantur Dominum,as he was approaching, caput terra aspergentes, beseeched the Lord, lumbosque ciliciis præcincti, sprinkling dirt on their heads and wrapping their waists with haircloth.
ad altaris crepidinem provoluti,And lying prostrate at the pedestal of the altar,ut sibi propitius, they beseeched him to be forgiving to them, inimicis autem eorum esset inimicus, but to be an enemy to their enemies,et adversariis adversaretur, and an adversary to their adversaries, sicut lex dicit.just as the law says.
Et ita post orationem,And so, after prayer, sumptis armis, taking up arms, longius de civitate procedentes, they proceeded further from the city, and,et proximi hostibus effecti, reaching close proximity to the enemies, resederunt.they settled in.
Primo autem solis ortu utrique commiserunt:But, as soon as the sun rose, both sides joined battle:isti quidem victoriæ et prosperitatis sponsorem cum virtute Dominum habentes:these ones having the guarantee of victory and success by the strength of the Lord, illi autem ducem belli animum habebant.yet the others having courage as their leader in battle.
Sed cum vehemens pugna esset,But, while they were fighting vehemently, apparuerunt adversariis de cælo viri quinque in equis, frenis aureis decori,to the adversaries there appeared from heaven five men on horses, which were adorned with bridles of gold, ducatum Judæis præstantes:providing leadership to the Jews.
ex quibus duo Machabæum medium habentes,Two of them, armis suis circumseptum incolumem conservabant:having Maccabeus in the middle and surrounding him with their weapons,in adversarios autem telakept him safe.et fulmina jaciebant,But,ex quoat the enemy,et cæcitate confusithey cast darts and lightning,et repleti perturbatione,so that they fell down, cadebant.being both confused with blindness and filled with disturbances.
Interfecti sunt autem viginti millia quingenti,Moreover, there were slain twenty thousand five hundred,et equites sexcenti.along with six hundred horsemen.
Timotheus vero confugit in Gazaram præsidium munitum,In fact, Timothy fled away to Gazara, to a fortified stronghold, cui præerat Chæreas.where Chaereas was in charge.
Machabæus autemThen Maccabeus,et qui cum eo erant, and those who were with him,lætantes obsederunt præsidium diebus quatuor.joyfully besieged the stronghold for four days.
At hi qui intus erant,But those who were inside, loci firmitate confisi, trusting to the strength of the place, supra modum maledicebant, spoke evil without limitet sermones nefandos jactabant.and cast out nefarious words.
Sed cum dies quinta illucesceret,But when the fifth day began to dawn, viginti juvenes ex his qui cum Machabæo erant, twenty youths of those who were with Maccabeus, accensi animis propter blasphemiam, inflamed in soul because of the blasphemy, viriliter accesserunt ad murum, manfully approached to the wall, and,et feroci animo incedentes ascendebant:advancing with fierce courage, ascended it.
sedMoreover,et alii similiter ascendentes, others also getting up after them, turres portasque succendere aggressi sunt, went to set fire to the towers and the gates, atque ipsos maledicos vivos concremare.and to burn the blasphemers alive.
Per continuum autem biduum præsidio vastato,Then, having continued throughout two days to lay waste to the fortress,Timotheum occultantem se in quodam repertum loco peremerunt:they killed Timothy, who was found hiding himself in a certain place.et fratrem illius Chæream et Apollophanem occiderunt. And they also killed his brother Chaereas, and Apollophanes.
Quibus gestis,When this was done,in hymnis et confessionibus benedicebant Dominum, they blessed the Lord with hymns and confessions, qui magna fecit in Israël, et victoriam dedit illis.who had done great things in Israel and had given them the victory.
