Sed parvo post tempore,But a short time afterwards,Lysias procurator regisLysias,et propinquus, the procurator of the king and a near relative,ac negotiorum præpositus, who also was in charge of the government, graviter ferens de his quæ acciderant, was heavily weighed upon by what had happened.
congregatis octoginta millibus,Gathering together eight thousand,et equitatu universo, along with all the horsemen, veniebat adversus Judæos,he came against the Jews, existimans se civitatem quidem captam gentibus habitaculum facturum, thinking that the city would certainly be captured, making it a dwelling place for the Gentiles,
templum vero in pecuniæ quæstum,in truth, sicut cetera delubra gentium, also thinking to make a profit in money from the temple, habiturum, just as from the other shrines of the Gentiles,et per singulos annos venale sacerdotium:and to put the priesthood up for sale every year.
nusquam recogitans Dei potestatem,Never recognizing the power of God, but inflated in mind, sed mente effrenatus in multitudine peditum,he trusted in the multitude of the foot soldiers,et in millibus equitum, et in octoginta elephantis confidebat.and in the thousands of horsemen, and in the eighty elephants.
Ingressus autem Judæam,And so, he entered Judea,et appropians Bethsuræ,and, approaching Bethzur,quæ erat in angusto loco, which was in a narrow place,ab Jerosolyma intervallo quinque stadiorum,at an interval of five stadia from Jerusalem, illud præsidium expugnabat.he laid siege to that stronghold.
Ut autem Machabæus et qui cum eo erant cognoverunt expugnari præsidia,But when Maccabeus and those who were with him realized that the strongholds were besieged, cum fletu et lacrimis rogabant Dominum, et omnis turba simul, they and all the crowd together petitioned the Lord with weeping and tears,ut bonum angelum mitteret ad salutem Israël.that he would send a good Angel to save Israel.
Et ipse primus Machabæus,And so the leader Maccabeus, sumptis armis, taking up arms, ceteros adhortatus est simul secum periculum subire, exhorted the others, to undergo the peril together with him,et ferre auxilium fratribus suis.and to bring assistance to their brothers.
Cumque pariter prompto animo procederent,And when they together were going forth with a ready spirit,Jerosolymis apparuit præcedens eos eques in veste candida, there appeared at Jerusalem a horseman, preceding them in radiant clothing and with weapons of gold, armis aureis hastam vibrans.waving a spear.
Tunc omnes simul benedixerunt misericordem Dominum,Then they all together blessed the merciful Lord,et convaluerunt animis:and strengthened their souls, non solum homines, being prepared to break through not only men,sed et bestias ferocissimas, but also the most ferocious beastset muros ferreos parati penetrare.and walls of iron.
Ibant igitur prompti,Thus, they went forth readily,de cælo habentes adjutorem et miserantem super eos Dominum.having a helper from heaven, and with the Lord taking pity on them.
Leonum autem more impetu irruentes in hostes,Then, rushing violently against the enemy, in the manner of lions, prostraverunt ex eis undecim millia peditum, et equitum mille sexcentos:they struck down from among them: eleven thousand foot soldiers and one thousand six hundred horsemen.
universos autem in fugam verterunt,And they turned all the rest to flight.plures autem ex eis vulnerati nudi evaserunt. But many of them, being wounded, escaped with nothing.Sed et ipse Lysias turpiter fugiens evasit. And Lysias himself also escaped, fleeing in disgrace.
Et quia non insensatus erat,And because he was not irrational, secum ipse reputans factam erga se diminutionem, thinking to himself about the loss that had happened against him,et intelligens invictos esse Hebræos, omnipotentis Dei auxilio innitentes, and understanding the Hebrews to be invincible because they depend upon the help of Almighty God,misit ad eos:he sent to them,
promisitque se consensurum omnibus quæ justa sunt, and he promised that he would agree to all things that are just,et regem compulsurum amicum fieri.and that he would persuade the king to be their friend.
Annuit autem Machabæus precibus Lysiæ,Then Maccabeus assented to the request of Lysias,in omnibus utilitati consulens:considering it useful in every way.et quæcumque Machabæus scripsit Lysiæ de Judæis,And whatever Maccabeus wrote to Lysias, concerning the Jews,ea rex concessit.the king consented to it.
Nam erant scriptæ Judæis epistolæ a Lysia quidem hunc modum continentes: Lysias populo Judæorum salutem. For there were letters written to the Jews from Lysias, which, indeed, were composed in this way: “Lysias, to the people of the Jews: greetings.
Joannes et Abesalom,John and Absalom, qui missi fuerant a vobis, tradentes scripta, who had been sent from you to deliver your writings, postulabant ut ea quæ per illos significabantur, implerem.requested that I would implement these things that were signified by them.
Quæcumque igitur regi potuerunt perferri,Therefore, exposui:whatever things could be brought before the king,et quæ res permittebat,I have presented them.concessit.And he has conceded to those things that are permitted.
Si igitur in negotiis fidem conservaveritis, et deinceps bonorum vobis causa esset, tentabo. If, therefore, you will keep yourselves faithful in these matters, then, from now on, I will endeavor to be a cause of your good.
De ceteris autem per singula verbo mandaviBut as for other particulars,et istis,I have given orders by word,et his, both to these, qui a me missi sunt, and to those who have been sent by me,colloqui vobiscum.to confer with you.
Bene valete. Anno centesimo, quadragesimo octavo mensis Dioscori, die vigesima et quarta.Farewell. In the one hundred forty-eighth year, on the twenty-fourth day of the month of Dioscorus.”
Regis autem epistola ista continebat:But the letter of the king contained this:Rex Antiochus Lysiæ fratri salutem.“King Antiochus to Lysias, his brother: greetings.
Patre nostro inter deos translato,Since our father has been transferred among the gods, nos volentes eos qui sunt in regno nostro sine tumultu agere,we are willing that those who are in our kingdom should act without tumult,et rebus suis adhibere diligentiam, and should attend diligently to their own concerns.
audivimus Judæos non consensisse patri meo ut transferrentur ad ritum Græcorum,We have heard that the Jews would not consent to my father to convert to the rites of the Greeks, sed tenere velle suum institutum, but that they chose to keep to their own institutions,ac propterea postulare a nobis concedi sibi legitima sua.and, because of this, that they ask of us to leave them to their own laws.
Volentes igitur hanc quoque gentem quietam esse,Therefore, wanting this nation, likewise, statuentes judicavimus templum restitui illis,to be at rest, we have reached a judgment that the temple should be restored to them,ut agerent secundum suorum majorum consuetudinem.so that they may act according to the custom of their ancestors.
Bene igitur feceris,You will do well,si miseris ad eostherefore,et dexteram dederis:if you send to them and grant them a pledge,ut cognita nostra voluntate,so that our will becomes known, bono animo sint, and they may be of good courage,et utilitatibus propriis deserviant.and may look after their own needs.”
Ad Judæos vero regis epistola talis erat:Truly, the letter of the king to the Jews was such as this:Rex Antiochus senatui Judæorum,“King Antiochus to the senate of the Jews,et ceteris Judæis salutem.and to the rest of the Jews: greetings.
Si valetis,If you are well, sic estis ut volumus:such is what we desire.sed et ipsi bene valemus. But we ourselves are also well.
Adiit nos Menelaus,Menelaus came to us,dicens velle vos descendere ad vestros, saying that you wished to come down to your own,qui sunt apud nos.who are among us.
His igitur qui commeant usque ad diem trigesimum mensis Xanthici,Therefore, we grant a pledge of security to those who come and go,damus dextras securitatis, even until the thirtieth day of the month of Xanthicus,
ut Judæi utantur cibis et legibus suis,so that the Jews may make use of their own foods and laws, sicut et prius:just as also before,et nemo eorum ullo modo molestiam patiatur de his quæ per ignorantiam gesta sunt.and so that none of them should endure any kind of trouble for things which have been done by ignorance.
Misimus autemAnd so,et Menelaum,we have also sent Menelaus, qui vos alloquatur.who will talk with you.
Valete.Farewell.Anno centesimo quadragesimo octavo,In the one hundred forty-eighth year,Xanthici mensis quintadecima die.on the fifteenth day of the month of Xanthicus.”
Miserunt autem etiam Romani epistolam,But the Romans also now sent a letter, ita se habentem:having this in it:Quintus Memmius et Titus Manilius legati Romanorum,“Quintus Memmius and Titus Manilius, ambassadors of the Romans, populo Judæorum salutem.to the people of the Jews: greetings.
De his quæ Lysias cognatus regis concessit vobis,Concerning these things that Lysias, the relative of the king, has conceded to you,et nos concessimus.we also have conceded.
De quibus autem ad regem judicavit referendum,But about such things as he judged should be referred to the king, confestim aliquem mittere, send someone, diligentius inter vos conferentes,as soon as you have diligently conferred among yourselves,ut decernamus,so that we may make a decree, sicut congruit vobis:just as it is agreeable to you.nos enim Antiochiam accedimus. For we are going to Antioch.
Ideoque festinate rescribere,And, therefore, make haste to write back,ut nos quoque sciamus cujus estis voluntatis.so that we may know whatever your will may be.
Bene valete.Farewell.Anno centesimo quadragesimo octavo,In the one hundred forty-eighth year, quintadecima die mensis Xanthici.on the fifteenth day of the month of Xanthicus.”
