Ecce ego mitto angelum meum,Behold, I send my angel,et præparabit viam ante faciem meam:and he will prepare the way before my face.et statim veniet ad templum suum Dominator quem vos quæritis,And presently the Sovereign, whom you seek, and the angel of testimony,et angelus testamenti quem vos vultis.whom you desire, will arrive at his temple. Behold,Ecce venit,he approaches, dicit Dominus exercituum.says the Lord of hosts.
Et quis poterit cogitare diem adventus ejus,And who will be able to consider the day of his advent,et quis stabit ad videndum eum?and who will stand firm in order to see him?ipse enim quasi ignis conflans,For he is like a refining fire,et quasi herba fullonum:and like the fuller’s herb.
et sedebit conflans, et emundans argentum:And he will sit refining and cleansing the silver,et purgabit filios Levi, and he will purge the sons of Levi,et colabit eos quasi aurum et quasi argentum, and he will gather them like gold and like silver,et erunt Domino offerentes sacrificia in justitia.and they will offer sacrifices to the Lord in justice.
Et placebit Domino sacrificium Juda et Jerusalem,And the sacrifice of Judah and of Jerusalem will please the Lord, sicut dies sæculi, just as in the days of past generations,et sicut anni antiqui.and as in the ancient years.
Et accedam ad vos in judicio,And I will approach you in judgment,et ero testis velox maleficis, and I will be a swift witness against evil-doers,et adulteris, and adulterers,et perjuris, and perjurers,et qui calumniantur mercedem mercenarii, and those who cheat the hired hand in his wages, viduas et pupillos, the widows and the orphans,et opprimunt peregrinum, and who oppress the traveler, nec timuerunt me,and who have not feared me,dicit Dominus exercituum.says the Lord of hosts.
Ego enim Dominus, et non mutor:For I am the Lord, and I do not change.et vos filii Jacob,And you, the sons of Jacob, non estis consumpti.have not been consumed.
A diebus enim patrum vestrorum recessistis a legitimis meis,For, from the days of your fathers, you have withdrawn from my ordinances and have not kept them.et non custodistis: revertimini ad me,Return to me, and I will return to you,et revertar ad vos, says the Lord of hosts.dicit Dominus exercituum. And you have said,Et dixistis:“In what way,In quo revertemur?shall we return?”
Si affliget homo Deum,If a man will afflict God,quia vos configitis me?then you greatly afflict me.Et dixistis:And you have said,In quo configimus te?“In what way,In decimisdo we afflict you?”et in primitiis. In tithes and in first-fruits.
Et in penuria vos maledicti estis,And you have been cursed with privation,et me vos configitis gens tota.and you greatly afflict me, even your entire people.
Inferte omnem decimam in horreum,Bring all the tithes into the storehouse,et sit cibus in domo mea:and let there be food in my house.et probate me super hoc,And test me about this, says the Lord, dicit Dominus: si non aperuero vobis cataractas cæli,as to whether I will not open to you the floodgates of heaven,et effudero vobis benedictionem usque ad abundantiam:and pour out to you a blessing, all the way to abundance.
et increpabo pro vobis devorantem,And I will rebuke for your sakes the devourer,et non corrumpet fructum terræ vestræ,and he will not corrupt the fruit of your land.nec erit sterilis vinea in agro,Neither will the vine in the field be barren, dicit Dominus exercituum.says the Lord of hosts.
Et beatos vos dicent omnes gentes:And all nations will call you blessed.eritis enim vos terra desiderabilis,For you will be a desirable land, dicit Dominus exercituum.says the Lord of hosts.
Invaluerunt super me verba vestra,Your words have gathered strength over me,dicit Dominus.says the Lord.
Et dixistis:And you have said,Quid locuti sumus contra te?“What have we spoken against you?”Dixistis:You have said,Vanus est qui servit Deo:“He labors in vain who serves God,”et quod emolumentum quia custodivimus præcepta ejus, and, “What advantage is it that we have kept his precepts,et quia ambulavimus tristes coram Domino exercituum?and that we have walked sorrowfully in the sight of the Lord of hosts?”
Ergo nunc beatos dicimus arrogantes:Now, therefore, we call the arrogant blessed, siquidem ædificati sunt facientes impietatem,as if those who work impiety have been built up,et tentaverunt Deum, et salvi facti sunt.and as if they have tempted God and been saved.
Tunc locuti sunt timentes Dominum,Then those who fear the Lord spoke, unusquisque cum proximo suo:each one with his neighbor.et attendit Dominus, et audivit,And the Lord paid attention and heeded.et scriptus est liber monumenti coram eo timentibus Dominum, et cogitantibus nomen ejus. And a book of remembrance was written in his sight, for those who fear the Lord and for those who consider his name.
Et erunt mihi, ait Dominus exercituum,And they will be my special possession,in die qua ego facio, in peculium:says the Lord of hosts, on the day that I act.et parcam eis, sicut parcit vir filio suo servienti sibi. And I will spare them, just as a man spares his son who serves him.
Et convertemini,And you shall be converted,et videbitis quid sit inter justum et impium, and you will see the difference between the just and the impious,et inter servientem Deo et non servientem ei.and between those who serve God and those who do not serve him.
