Initium Evangelii Jesu Christi,The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ,Filii Dei.the Son of God.

Sicut scriptum est in Isaia propheta:As it has been written by the prophet Isaiah:Ecce ego mitto angelum meum ante faciem tuam,“Behold, I send my Angel before your face, qui præparabit viam tuam ante te.who shall prepare your way before you.

Vox clamantis in deserto:The voice of one crying out in the desert:Parate viam Domini,Prepare the way of the Lord;rectas facite semitas ejus.make straight his paths.”

Fuit Joannes in deserto baptizans,John was in the desert,et prædicans baptismum pœnitentiæ in remissionem peccatorum.baptizing and preaching a baptism of repentance, as a remission of sins.

Et egrediebatur ad eum omnis Judææ regio,And there went out to him all the region of Judeaet Jerosolymitæ universi, and all those of Jerusalem,et baptizabantur ab illo in Jordanis flumine, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confitentes peccata sua.confessing their sins.

Et erat Joannes vestitus pilis cameli, et zona pellicea circa lumbos ejus,And John was clothed with camel’s hair and with a leather belt around his waist.et locustas et mel silvestre edebat. And he ate locusts and wild honey.

Et prædicabat dicens:And he preached, saying:Venit fortior me post me, cujus non sum dignus procumbens solvere corrigiam calceamentorum ejus.“One stronger than me comes after me. I am not worthy to reach down and loosen the laces of his shoes.

Ego baptizavi vos aqua,I have baptized you with water.ille vero baptizabit vos Spiritu Sancto.Yet truly, he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Et factum est:And it happened that,in diebus illis venit Jesus a Nazareth Galilææ:in those days, Jesus arrived from Nazareth of Galilee.et baptizatus est a Joanne in Jordane. And he was baptized by John in the Jordan.

Et statim ascendens de aqua, vidit cælos apertos,And immediately, upon ascending from the water,et Spiritum tamquam columbam descendentem,he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit, like a dove, descending,et manentem in ipso.and remaining with him.

Et vox facta est de cælis:And there was a voice from heaven:Tu es Filius meus dilectus,“You are my beloved Son;in te complacui.in you I am well pleased.”

Et statim Spiritus expulit eum in desertum. And immediately the Spirit prompted him into the desert.

Et erat in deserto quadraginta diebus,And he was in the desert for forty dayset quadraginta noctibus:and forty nights.et tentabatur a Satana:And he was tempted by Satan.eratque cum bestiis,And he was with the wild animals,et angeli ministrabant illi.and the Angels ministered to him.

Postquam autem traditus est Joannes,Then, after John was handed over, venit Jesus in Galilæam,Jesus went into Galilee,prædicans Evangelium regni Dei,preaching the Gospel of the kingdom of God,

et dicens:and saying:Quoniam impletum est tempus,“For the time has been fulfilledet appropinquavit regnum Dei:and the kingdom of God has drawn near.pœnitemini,Repentet credite Evangelio.and believe in the Gospel.”

Et præteriens secus mare Galilææ,And passing by the shore of the Sea of Galilee, vidit Simonem,he saw Simon and his brother Andrew,et Andream fratrem ejus, casting nets into the sea, mittentes retia in mare (erant enim piscatores),for they were fishermen.

et dixit eis Jesus:And Jesus said to them,Venite post me,“Come after me,et faciam vos fieri piscatores hominum.and I will make you fishers of men.”

Et protinus relictis retibus,And at once abandoning their nets, secuti sunt eum.they followed him.

Et progressus inde pusillum,And continuing on a little ways from there, vidit Jacobum Zebedæi,he saw James of Zebedeeet Joannem fratrem ejus, and his brother John,et ipsos componentes retia in navi:and they were mending their nets in a boat.

et statim vocavit illos. And immediately he called them.Et relicto patre suo Zebedæo in navi cum mercenariis,And leaving behind their father Zebedee in the boat with his hired hands, secuti sunt eum.they followed him.

Et ingrediuntur Capharnaum:And they entered into Capernaum.et statim sabbatis ingressus in synagogam,And entering into the synagogue promptly on the Sabbaths, docebat eos.he taught them.

Et stupebant super doctrina ejus:And they were astonished over his doctrine.erat enim docens eos quasi potestatem habens,For he was teaching them as one who has authority,et non sicut scribæ.and not like the scribes.

Et erat in synagoga eorum homo in spiritu immundo:And in their synagogue, there was a man with an unclean spirit;et exclamavit, and he cried out,

dicens:saying:Quid nobis et tibi,“What are we to you,Jesu Nazarene?Jesus of Nazareth?venisti perdere nos?Have you come to destroy us?scio qui sis,I know who you are:Sanctus Dei.the Holy One of God.”

Et comminatus est ei Jesus,And Jesus admonished him, dicens:saying,Obmutesce,“Be silent,et exi de homine.and depart from the man.”

Et discerpens eum spiritus immundus,And the unclean spirit,et exclamans voce magna, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, exiit ab eo.departed from him.

Et mirati sunt omnes,And they were all so amazed that they inquired among themselves, ita ut conquirerent inter se dicentes:saying:Quidnam est hoc?“What is this?quænam doctrina hæc nova? And what is this new doctrine?quia in potestate etiam spiritibus immundis imperat,For with authority he commands even the unclean spirits,et obediunt ei.and they obey him.”

Et processit rumor ejus statim in omnem regionem Galilææ.And his fame went out quickly, throughout the entire region of Galilee.

Et protinus egredientes de synagoga,And soon after departing from the synagogue, venerunt in domum Simonis et Andreæ,they went into the house of Simon and Andrew, cum Jacobo et Joanne.with James and John.

Decumbebat autem socrus Simonis febricitans:But the mother-in-law of Simon lay ill with a fever.et statim dicunt ei de illa. And at once they told him about her.

Et accedens elevavit eam,And drawing near to her, he raised her up,apprehensa manu ejus:taking her by the hand.et continuo dimisit eam febris,And immediately the fever left her,et ministrabat eis.and she ministered to them.

Vespere autem facto cum occidisset sol,Then, when evening arrived, after the sun had set, afferebant ad eum omnes male habentes, et dæmonia habentes:they brought to him all who had maladies and those who had demons.

et erat omnis civitas congregata ad januam. And the entire city was gathered together at the door.

Et curavit multos, qui vexabantur variis languoribus,And he healed many who were troubled with various illnesses.et dæmonia multa ejiciebat,And he cast out many demons,et non sinebat ea loqui, but he would not permit them to speak, quoniam sciebant eum.because they knew him.

Et diluculo valde surgens,And rising up very early, egressus abiit in desertum locum, departing, he went out to a deserted place, ibique orabat.and there he prayed.

Et prosecutus est eum Simon,And Simon, and those who were with him,et qui cum illo erant.followed after him.

Et cum invenissent eum,And when they had found him, dixerunt ei:they said to him,Quia omnes quærunt te.“For everyone is seeking you.”

Et ait illis:And he said to them:Eamus in proximos vicos,“Let us go into the neighboring towns and cities,et civitates,so that I may preach there also.ut et ibi prædicem:Indeed,ad hoc enim veni.it was for this reason that I came.”

Et erat prædicans in synagogis eorum,And he was preaching in their synagogueset in omni Galilæa,and throughout all of Galilee,et dæmonia ejiciens.and casting out demons.

Et venit ad eum leprosus deprecans eum:And a leper came to him, begging him. And kneeling down,et genu flexo dixit ei:he said to him, “If you are willing,Si vis, potes me mundare.you are able to cleanse me.”

Jesus autem misertus ejus,Then Jesus, taking pity on him, extendit manum suam:reached out his hand.et tangens eum,And touching him,ait illi: Volo:he said to him: “I am willing.mundare.Be cleansed.”

Et cum dixisset,And after he had spoken, statim discessit ab eo lepra, immediately the leprosy departed from him,et mundatus est.and he was cleansed.

Et comminatus est ei,And he admonished him, statimque ejecit illum, and he promptly sent him away.

et dicit ei:And he said to him:Vide nemini dixeris:“See to it that you tell no one.sed vade,But goostende te principi sacerdotum, and show yourself to the high priest,et offer pro emundatione tua,and offer for your cleansing that which Moses instructed,quæ præcepit Moyses in testimonium illis.as a testimony for them.”

At ille egressus cœpit prædicare, et diffamare sermonem,But having departed, he began to preach and to disseminate the word, ita ut jam non posset manifeste introire in civitatem,so that he was no longer able to openly enter a city, sed foris in desertis locis esset, but had to remain outside, in deserted places.et conveniebant ad eum undique. And they were gathered to him from every direction.
