Erat autem Pascha et azyma post biduum: et quærebant summi sacerdotes et scribæ quomodo eum dolo tenerent, et occiderent. Now the feast of Passover and of Unleavened Bread was two days away. And the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, were seeking a means by which they might deceitfully seize him and kill him.
Dicebant autem:But they said,Non in die festo,“Not on the feast day,ne forte tumultus fieret in populo.lest perhaps there may be a tumult among the people.”
Et cum esset Bethaniæ in domo Simonis leprosi,And when he was in Bethania, in the house of Simon the leper,et recumberet, and was reclining to eat, venit mulier habens alabastrum unguenti nardi spicati pretiosi:a woman arrived having an alabaster container of ointment, of precious spikenard.et fracto alabastro, effudit super caput ejus. And breaking open the alabaster container, she poured it over his head.
Erant autem quidam indigne ferentes intra semetipsos,But there were some who became indignant within themselveset dicentes:and who were saying:Ut quid perditio ista unguenti facta est?“What is the reason for this waste of the ointment?
poterat enim unguentum istud venundari plus quam trecentis denariis,For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denariiet dari pauperibus.and been given to the poor.”Et fremebant in eam.And they murmured against her.
Jesus autem dixit:But Jesus said:Sinite eam,“Permit her.quid illi molesti estis? What is the reason that you trouble her?Bonum opus operata est in me:She has done a good deed for me.
semper enim pauperes habetis vobiscum:For the poor, you have with you always.et cum volueritis,And whenever you wish, potestis illis benefacere:you are able to do good to them.me autem non semper habetis. But you do not have me always.
Quod habuit hæc, fecit:But she has done what she could.prævenit ungere corpus meum in sepulturam. She has arrived in advance to anoint my body for burial.
Amen dico vobis:Amen I say to you,Ubicumque prædicatum fuerit Evangelium istud in universo mundo, wherever this Gospel shall be preached throughout the entire world,et quod fecit hæc,the things she has done also shall be told, narrabitur in memoriam ejus.in memory of her.”
Et Judas Iscariotes,And Judas Iscariot, unus de duodecim, one of the twelve, abiit ad summos sacerdotes, went away, to the leaders of the priests,ut proderet eum illis.in order to betray him to them.
Qui audientes gavisi sunt:And they, upon hearing it, were gladdened.et promiserunt ei pecuniam se daturos. And they promised him that they would give him money.Et quærebat quomodo illum opportune traderet. And he sought an opportune means by which he might betray him.
Et primo die azymorum quando Pascha immolabant,And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, dicunt ei discipuli:when they immolate the Passover,Quo vis eamus, the disciples said to him,et paremus tibi ut manduces Pascha?“Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?”
Et mittit duos ex discipulis suis,And he sent two of his disciples,et dicit eis:and he said to them:Ite in civitatem,“Go into the city.et occurret vobis homo lagenam aquæ bajulans:And you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water;sequimini eum, follow him.
et quocumque introierit,And wherever he will have entered, dicite domino domus, say to the owner of the house, quia magister dicit:‘The Teacher says:Ubi est refectio mea,Where is my dining room, ubi Pascha cum discipulis meis manducem?where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’
Et ipse vobis demonstrabit cœnaculum grande,And he will show you a large cenacle, fully furnished.stratum:And there,et illic parate nobis.you shall prepare it for us.”
Et abierunt discipuli ejus,And his disciples departedet venerunt in civitatem:and went into the city.et invenerunt sicut dixerat illis,And they found it just as he had told them.et paraverunt Pascha. And they prepared the Passover.
Vespere autem facto,Then, when evening came, venit cum duodecim.he arrived with the twelve.
Et discumbentibus eis,And while reclining and eating with them at table,et manducantibus,Jesus said, ait Jesus:“Amen I say to you,Amen dico vobis, that one of you, quia unus ex vobis tradet me,who eats with me,qui manducat mecum.will betray me.”
At illi cœperunt contristari,But they began to be sorrowful and to say to him,et dicere ei singulatim:one at a time:Numquid ego?“Is it I?”
Qui ait illis:And he said to them:Unus ex duodecim,“It is one of the twelve, qui intingit mecum manum in catino.who dips his hand with me in the dish.
Et Filius quidem hominis vadit sicut scriptum est de eo:And indeed, the Son of man goes, just as it has been written of him.væ autem homini illi per quem Filius hominis tradetur! But woe to that man by whom the Son of man will be betrayed.bonum erat ei, si non esset natus homo ille.It would be better for that man if he had never been born.”
Et manducantibus illis,And while eating with them, accepit Jesus panem:Jesus took bread.et benedicens fregit,And blessing it,et dedit eis,he broke it and gave it to them,et ait:and he said:Sumite,“Take.hoc est corpus meum. This is my body.”
Et accepto calice,And having taken the chalice, gratias agens dedit eis:giving thanks, he gave it to them.et biberunt ex illo omnes. And they all drank from it.
Et ait illis:And he said to them:Hic est sanguis meus novi testamenti,“This is my blood of the new covenant, qui pro multis effundetur.which shall be shed for many.
Amen dico vobis,Amen I say to you, quia jam non bibam de hoc genimine vitis usque in diem illum, that I will no longer drink from this fruit of the vine, cum illud bibam novum in regno Dei.until that day when I will drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
Et hymno dicto exierunt in montem Olivarum. And having sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Et ait eis Jesus:And Jesus said to them:Omnes scandalizabimini in me in nocte ista:“You will all fall away from me in this night.quia scriptum est:For it has been written:Percutiam pastorem,‘I will strike the shepherd,et dispergentur oves.and the sheep will be scattered.’
Sed postquam resurrexero,But after I have risen again,præcedam vos in Galilæam.I will go before you to Galilee.”
Petrus autem ait illi:Then Peter said to him,Et si omnes scandalizati fuerint in te,“Even if all will have fallen away from you,sed non ego.yet I will not.”
Et ait illi Jesus:And Jesus said to him,Amen dico tibi,“Amen I say to you, quia tu hodie in nocte hac, that this day, in this night, priusquam gallus vocem bis dederit, before the rooster has uttered its voice twice, ter me es negaturus.you will deny me three times.”
At ille amplius loquebatur:But he spoke further,Et si oportuerit me simul commori tibi,“Even if I must die along with you,non te negabo.I will not deny you.”Similiter autem et omnes dicebant. And they all spoke similarly also.
Et veniunt in prædium,And they went to a country estate, cui nomen Gethsemani.by the name of Gethsemani.Et ait discipulis suis:And he said to his disciples,Sedete hic donec orem.“Sit here, while I pray.”
Et assumit Petrum,And he took Peter,et Jacobum, and James,et Joannem secum:and John with him.et cœpit pavere et tædere. And he began to be afraid and wearied.
Et ait illis:And he said to them:Tristis est anima mea usque ad mortem:“My soul is sorrowful, sustinete hic, even unto death.et vigilate.Remain here and be vigilant.”
Et cum processisset paululum,And when he had proceeded on a little ways, procidit super terram,he fell prostrate on the ground.et orabat ut,And he prayed that,si fieri posset,if it were possible, transiret ab eo hora.the hour might pass away from him.
Et dixit:And he said:Abba pater,“Abba, Father, omnia tibi possibilia sunt:all things are possible to you.transfer calicem hunc a me:Take this chalice from me.sed non quod ego volo,But let it be, not as I will, sed quod tu.but as you will.”
Et venit,And he wentet invenit eos dormientes.and found them sleeping.Et ait Petro:And he said to Peter:Simon,“Simon, dormis?are you sleeping?non potuisti una hora vigilare? Were you not able to be vigilant for one hour?
vigilate et orate,Watch and pray,ut non intretis in tentationem.so that you may not enter into temptation.Spiritus quidem promptus est,The spirit indeed is willing, caro vero infirma.but the flesh is weak.”
Et iterum abiens oravit,And going away again, he prayed, eumdem sermonem dicens.saying the same words.
Et reversus,And upon returning, denuo invenit eos dormientes (erant enim oculi eorum gravati),he found them sleeping yet again,et ignorabant quid responderent ei.(for their eyes were heavy) and they did not know how to respond to him.
Et venit tertio, et ait illis:And he arrived for the third time,Dormite jam,and he said to them:et requiescite.“Sleep now, and take rest.Sufficit:It is enough.venit hora:The hour has arrived.ecce Filius hominis tradetur in manus peccatorum.Behold, the Son of man will be betrayed into the hands of sinners.
Surgite,Rise up,eamus:let us go.ecce qui me tradet,Behold, prope est.he who will betray me is near.”
Et,And while he was still speaking, adhuc eo loquente,Judas Iscariot, venit Judas Iscariotes unus de duodecim, one of the twelve,et cum eo turba multa cum gladiisarrived,et lignis, and with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs,a summis sacerdotibus, sent from the leaders of the priests,et scribis, and the scribes,et senioribus.and the elders.
Dederat autem traditor ejus signum eis,Now his betrayer had given them a sign, dicens:saying:Quemcumque osculatus fuero,“He whom I shall kiss, ipse est,it is he.tenete eum,Take hold of him,et ducite caute.and lead him away cautiously.”
Et cum venisset,And when he had arrived, statim accedens ad eum, ait:immediately drawing near to him,Ave Rabbi:he said: “Hail,et osculatus est eum.Master!” And he kissed him.
At illi manus injecerunt in eum,But they laid hands on himet tenuerunt eum.and held him.
Unus autem quidam de circumstantibus educens gladium,Then a certain one of those standing near, percussit servum summi sacerdotis, drawing a sword,et amputavit illi auriculam.struck a servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
Et respondens Jesus, ait illis:And in response, Jesus said to them:Tamquam ad latronem existis cum gladiis et lignis comprehendere me?“Have you set out to apprehend me, just as if to a robber, with swords and clubs?
quotidie eram apud vos in templo docens,Daily, I was with you in the temple teaching,et non me tenuistis.and you did not take hold of me.Sed ut impleantur Scripturæ.But in this way, the scriptures are fulfilled.”
Tunc discipuli ejus relinquentes eum,Then his disciples, leaving him behind, omnes fugerunt.all fled away.
Adolescens autem quidam sequebatur eum amictus sindone super nudo:Now a certain young man followed him, having nothing but a fine linen cloth over himself.et tenuerunt eum.And they took hold of him.
At ille rejecta sindone,But he, rejecting the fine linen cloth, nudus profugit ab eis.escaped from them naked.
Et adduxerunt Jesum ad summum sacerdotem:And they led Jesus to the high priest.et convenerunt omnes sacerdotes,And all the priestset scribæ,and the scribeset seniores.and the elders came together.
Petrus autem a longe secutus est eum usque intro in atrium summi sacerdotis:But Peter followed him from a distance,et sedebat cum ministris ad ignem, even into the court of the high priest.et calefaciebat se.And he sat with the servants at the fire and warmed himself.
Summi vero sacerdotes et omne concilium quærebant adversus Jesum testimonium ut eum morti traderent:Yet truly, the leaders of the priests and the entire council sought testimony against Jesus, so that they might deliver him to death, nec inveniebant.and they found none.
Multi enim testimonium falsum dicebant adversus eum:For many spoke false testimony against him,et convenientia testimonia non erant.but their testimony did not agree.
Et quidam surgentes,And certain ones, falsum testimonium ferebant adversus eum, rising up, bore false witness against him, dicentes:saying:
Quoniam nos audivimus eum dicentem:“For we heard him say,Ego dissolvam templum hoc manu factum,‘I will destroy this temple, made with hands,et per triduum aliud non manu factum ædificabo.and within three days I will build another, not made with hands.’”
Et non erat conveniens testimonium illorum. And their testimony did not agree.
Et exsurgens summus sacerdos in medium,And the high priest, rising up in their midst, interrogavit Jesum, questioned Jesus, saying, dicens: Non respondes quidquam ad ea quæ tibi objiciuntur ab his?“Do you have nothing to say in answer to the things that are brought against you by these ones?”
Ille autem tacebat, et nihil respondit. But he was silent and gave no answer. Again,Rursum summus sacerdos interrogabat eum,the high priest questioned him, and he said to him,et dixit ei: Tu es Christus Filius Dei benedicti?“Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed God?”
Jesus autem dixit illi:Then Jesus said to him:Ego sum:“I am.et videbitis Filium hominis sedentem a dextris virtutis Dei,And you shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of the power of Godet venientem cum nubibus cæli.and arriving with the clouds of heaven.”
Summus autem sacerdos scindens vestimenta sua,Then the high priest, rending his garments, ait:said:Quid adhuc desideramus testes?“Why do we still require witnesses?
Audistis blasphemiam:You have heard the blasphemy.quid vobis videtur? How does it seem to you?”Qui omnes condemnaverunt eum esse reum mortis. And they all condemned him, as guilty unto death.
Et cœperunt quidam conspuere eum,And some began to spit on him,et velare faciem ejus, and to cover his faceet colaphis eum cædere, and to strike him with fists,et dicere ei:and to say to him,Prophetiza:“Prophesy.”et ministri alapis eum cædebant. And the servants struck him with the palms their hands.
Et cum esset Petrus in atrio deorsum,And while Peter was in the court below, venit una ex ancillis summi sacerdotis:one of the maidservants of the high priest arrived.
et cum vidisset Petrum calefacientem se,And when she had seen Peter warming himself, aspiciens illum, she stared at him, ait:and she said:Et tu cum Jesu Nazareno eras.“You also were with Jesus of Nazareth.”
At ille negavit,But he denied it,dicens:saying,Neque scio,“I neither know nor understand what you saying.”neque novi quid dicas. And he went outside,Et exiit foras ante atrium,in front of the court;et gallus cantavit.and a rooster crowed.
Rursus autem cum vidisset illum ancilla,Then again, when a maidservant had seen him,cœpit dicere circumstantibus:she began to say to the bystanders,Quia hic ex illis est.“For this is one of them.”
At ille iterum negavit. But he denied it again.Et post pusillum rursus qui astabant, dicebant Petro:And after a little while, again those standing near said to Peter:Vere ex illis es:“In truth, you are one of them.nam et Galilæus es.For you, too, are a Galilean.”
Ille autem cœpit anathematizareThen he began to curse and to swear,et jurare:saying,Quia nescio hominem istum,“For I do not know this man, quem dicitis.about whom you are speaking.”
Et statim gallus iterum cantavit. And immediately the rooster crowed again.Et recordatus est Petrus verbi quod dixerat ei Jesus:And Peter remembered the word that Jesus had said to him,Priusquam gallus cantet bis,“Before the rooster crows twice, ter me negabis.you will deny me three times.”Et cœpit flere. And he began to weep.
