Et confestim mane consilium facientes summi sacerdotes cum senioribus, et scribis, et universo concilio, vincientes Jesum, duxerunt, et tradiderunt Pilato. And immediately in the morning, after the leaders of the priests had taken counsel with the elders and the scribes and the entire council, binding Jesus, they led him away and delivered him to Pilate.

Et interrogavit eum Pilatus:And Pilate questioned him,Tu es rex Judæorum?“You are the king of the Jews?”At ille respondens,But in response, ait illi:he said to him,Tu dicis.“You are saying it.”

Et accusabant eum summi sacerdotes in multis. And the leaders of the priests accused him in many things.

Pilatus autem rursum interrogavit eum,Then Pilate again questioned him, dicens:saying:Non respondes quidquam?“Do you not have any response?vide in quantis te accusant.See how greatly they accuse you.”

Jesus autem amplius nihil respondit,But Jesus continued to give no response, ita ut miraretur Pilatus.so that Pilate wondered.

Per diem autem festum solebat dimittere illis unum ex vinctis,Now on the feast day, he was accustomed to release to them one of the prisoners, quemcumque petissent.whomever they requested.

Erat autem qui dicebatur Barrabas,But there was one called Barabbas, qui cum seditiosis erat vinctus, who had committed murder in the sedition, qui in seditione fecerat homicidium.who was confined with those of the sedition.

Et cum ascendisset turba,And when the crowd had ascended,cœpit rogare, sicut semper faciebat illis.they began to petition him to do as he always did for them.

Pilatus autem respondit eis,But Pilate answered themet dixit:and said,Vultis dimittam vobis regem Judæorum?“Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”

Sciebat enim quod per invidiam tradidissent eum summi sacerdotes. For he knew that it was out of envy that the leaders of the priests had betrayed him.

Pontifices autem concitaverunt turbam,Then the chief priests incited the crowd,ut magis Barabbam dimitteret eis.so that he would release Barabbas to them instead.

Pilatus autem iterum respondens,But Pilate, responding again, said to them:ait illis: Quid ergo vultis faciam regi Judæorum?“Then what do you want me to do with the king of the Jews?”

At illi iterum clamaverunt:But again they cried out,Crucifige eum.“Crucify him.”

Pilatus vero dicebat illis:Yet truly, Pilate said to them:Quid enim mali fecit?“Why? What evil has he done?”At illi magis clamabant:But they cried out all the more,Crucifige eum.“Crucify him.”

Pilatus autem volens populo satisfacere,Then Pilate, wishing to satisfy the people, dimisit illis Barabbam, released Barabbas to them,et tradidit Jesum flagellis cæsum, and he delivered Jesus, having severely scourged him,ut crucifigeretur.to be crucified.

Milites autem duxerunt eum in atrium prætorii,Then the soldiers led him away to the court of the praetorium.et convocant totam cohortem,And they called together the entire cohort.

et induunt eum purpura,And they clothed him with purple.et imponunt ei plectentes spineam coronam. And platting a crown of thorns, they placed it on him.

Et cœperunt salutare eum:And they began to salute him:Ave rex Judæorum.“Hail, king of the Jews.”

Et percutiebant caput ejus arundine:And they struck his head with a reed,et conspuebant eum,and they spit on him.et ponentes genua,And kneeling down, adorabant eum.they reverenced him.

Et postquam illuserunt ei,And after they had mocked him, exuerunt illum purpura, they stripped him of the purple,et induerunt eum vestimentis suis:and they clothed him in his own garments.et educunt illum ut crucifigerent eum.And they led him away, so that they might crucify him.

Et angariaverunt prætereuntem quempiam,And they compelled a certain passerby,Simonem Cyrenæum venientem de villa,Simon the Cyrenian, patrem Alexandriwho was arriving from the countryside,et Rufi, the father of Alexander and Rufus,ut tolleret crucem ejus.to take up his cross.

Et perducunt illum in Golgotha locum:And they led him through to the place called Golgotha, quod est interpretatum Calvariæ locus.which means, ‘the Place of Calvary.’

Et dabant ei bibere myrrhatum vinum:And they gave him wine with myrrh to drink.et non accepit. But he did not accept it.

Et crucifigentes eum,And while crucifying him, diviserunt vestimenta ejus, they divided his garments, mittentes sortem super eis, casting lots over them, quis quid tolleret.to see who would take what.

Erat autem hora tertia:Now it was the third hour.et crucifixerunt eum.And they crucified him.

Et erat titulus causæ ejus inscriptus:And the title of his case was written as:Rex Judæorum. The king of the Jews.

Et cum eo crucifigunt duos latrones:And with him they crucified two robbers:unum a dextris, one at his right,et alium a sinistris ejus.and the other at his left.

Et impleta est Scriptura,And the scripture was fulfilled,quæ dicit:which says:Et cum iniquis reputatus est.“And with the iniquitous he was reputed.”

Et prætereuntes blasphemabant eum,And the passersby blasphemed him, moventes capita sua, shaking their headset dicentes:and saying,Vah!“Ah,qui destruis templum Dei,you who would destroy the temple of God,et in tribus diebus reædificas, and in three days rebuild it,

salvum fac temetipsum descendens de cruce.save yourself by descending from the cross.”

SimiliterAnd similarly the leaders of the priests,et summi sacerdotes illudentes, mocking him with the scribes,ad alterutrum cum scribis dicebant:said to one another:Alios salvos fecit;“He saved others.seipsum non potest salvum facere. He is not able to save himself.

Christus rex Israël descendat nunc de cruce,Let the Christ,ut videamus, the king of Israel,et credamus.descend now from the cross,Et qui cum eo crucifixi erant,so that we may see and believe.”convitiabantur ei.Those who were crucified with him also insulted him.

Et facta hora sexta,And when the sixth hour arrived, tenebræ factæ sunt per totam terram usque in horam nonam.a darkness occurred over the entire earth, until the ninth hour.

Et hora nona exclamavit Jesus voce magna,And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, dicens:saying,Eloi,“Eloi, eloi,Eloi, lamma sabacthani?lamma sabacthani?”quod est interpretatum:which means, “My God,Deus meus,My God,Deus meus, ut quid dereliquisti me?why have you forsaken me?”

Et quidam de circumstantibus audientes,And some of those standing near, upon hearing this, dicebant:said, “Behold,Ecce Eliam vocat.he is calling Elijah.”

Currens autem unus,Then one of them,et implens spongiam aceto, running and filling a sponge with vinegar, circumponensque calamo, and placing it around a reed, potum dabat ei,gave it to him to drink, dicens:saying:Sinite,“Wait.videamus si veniat Elias ad deponendum eum.Let us see if Elijah will come to take him down.”

Jesus autem emissa voce magna expiravit. Then Jesus, having emitted a loud cry, expired.

Et velum templi scissum est in duo,And the veil of the temple was torn in two,a summo usque deorsum.from the top to the bottom.

Videns autem centurio,Then the centurion who stood opposite him,qui ex adverso stabat, seeing that he had expired while crying out in this way, quia sic clamans expirasset, said:ait:“Truly,Vere hic homo Filius Dei erat.this man was the Son of God.”

Erant autem et mulieres de longe aspicientes:Now there were also women watching from a distance, inter quas erat Maria Magdalene, among whom were Mary Magdalene,et Maria Jacobi minoris, and Mary the mother of James the youngeret Joseph mater, and of Joseph,et Salome:and Salome,

et cum esset in Galilæa,(and while he was in Galilee, sequebantur eum, they followed himet ministrabant ei,and ministered to him)et aliæ multæ,and many other women,quæ simul cum eo ascenderant Jerosolymam.who had ascended along with him to Jerusalem.

Et cum jam sero esset factum (quia erat parasceve,And when evening had now arrived (because it was the Preparation Day,quod est ante sabbatum),which is before the Sabbath)

venit Joseph ab Arimathæa nobilis decurio, there arrived Joseph of Arimathea, qui et ipse erat exspectans regnum Dei,a noble council member,et audacter introivit ad Pilatum, who himself was also awaiting the kingdom of God.et petiit corpus Jesu. And he boldly entered to Pilate and petitioned for the body of Jesus.

Pilatus autem mirabatur si jam obiisset. But Pilate wondered if he had already died.Et accersito centurione,And summoning a centurion, interrogavit eum si jam mortuus esset.he questioned him as to whether he was already dead.

Et cum cognovisset a centurione,And when he had been informed by the centurion, donavit corpus Joseph.he gave the body to Joseph.

Joseph autem mercatus sindonem,Then Joseph, having bought a fine linen cloth,et deponens eum involvit sindone, and taking him down,et posuit eum in monumento quod erat excisum de petra, wrapped him in the fine linen and laid him in a sepulcher, which was hewn from a rock.et advolvit lapidem ad ostium monumenti. And he rolled a stone to the entrance of the tomb.

Maria autem Magdalene et Maria Joseph aspiciebant ubi poneretur. Now Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph observed where he was laid.
