Tunc accesserunt ad eum ab Jerosolymis scribæ et pharisæi,Then the scribes and the Pharisees came to him from Jerusalem, dicentes:saying:
Quare discipuli tui transgrediuntur traditionem seniorum?“Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders?non enim lavant manus suas cum panem manducant. For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”
Ipse autem respondens ait illis:But responding,Quarehe said to them:et vos transgredimini mandatum Dei propter traditionem vestram?“And why do you transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?Nam Deus dixit:For God said:
Honora patrem, et matrem:‘Honor your father and mother,’et,and,Qui maledixerit patri, vel matri, morte moriatur.‘Whoever will have cursed father or mother shall die a death.’
Vos autem dicitis: Quicumque dixerit patri,But you say: ‘If anyone will have said to father or mother, vel matri: Munus,“It is dedicated, quodcumque est ex me, tibi proderit:so that whatever is from me will benefit you,”
et non honorificabit patrem suum, then he shall not honor his father or his mother.’aut matrem suam:So have you nullified the commandment of God,et irritum fecistis mandatum Dei propter traditionem vestram.for the sake of your tradition.
Hypocritæ,Hypocrites!bene prophetavit de vobis Isaias,How well did Isaiah prophesy about you, dicens:saying:
Populus hic labiis me honorat:‘This people honors me with their lips, cor autem eorum longe est a me.but their heart is far from me.
Sine causa autem colunt me,For in vain do they worship me,docentes doctrinas et mandata hominum.teaching the doctrines and commandments of men.’”
Et convocatis ad se turbis,And having called the multitudes to him, dixit eis:he said to them:Audite,“Listenet intelligite.and understand.
Non quod intrat in os, coinquinat hominem:A man is not defiled by what enters into the mouth, sed quod procedit ex ore,but by what proceeds from the mouth.hoc coinquinat hominem. This is what defiles a man.”
Tunc accedentes discipuli ejus,Then his disciples drew near and said to him, dixerunt ei:“Do you know that the Pharisees,Scis quia pharisæi audito verbo hoc, upon hearing this word, scandalizati sunt?were offended?”
At ille respondens ait:But in response he said:Omnis plantatio, quam non plantavit Pater meus cælestis, eradicabitur.“Every plant which has not been planted by my heavenly Father shall be uprooted.
Sinite illos:Leave them alone.cæci sunt,They are blind,et duces cæcorum;and they lead the blind.cæcus autem si cæco ducatum præstet,But if the blind are in charge of the blind, ambo in foveam cadunt.both will fall into the pit.”
Respondens autem Petrus dixit ei:And responding, Peter said to him,Edissere nobis parabolam istam.“Explain this parable to us.”
At ille dixit:But he said:Adhuc et vos sine intellectu estis?“Are you, even now, without understanding?
Non intelligitis quia omne quod in os intrat, in ventrem vadit,Do you not understand that everything that enters into the mouth goes into the gut,et in secessum emittitur?and is cast into the sewer?
Quæ autem procedunt de ore,But what proceeds from the mouth,de corde exeunt, goes forth from the heart,et ea coinquinant hominem:and those are the things that defile a man.
de corde enim exeunt cogitationes malæ,For from the heart go out evil thoughts, homicidia, murders, adulteria, adulteries, fornicationes, fornications, furta, thefts, falsa testimonia, false testimonies, blasphemiæ:blasphemies.
hæc sunt, quæ coinquinant hominem. These are the things that defile a man.Non lotis autem manibus manducare, non coinquinat hominem. But to eat without washing hands does not defile a man.”
Et egressus inde Jesus secessit in partes TyriAnd departing from there,et Sidonis.Jesus withdrew into the areas of Tyre and Sidon.
Et ecce mulier chananæa a finibus illis egressa clamavit,And behold, a woman of Canaan, going out from those parts, dicens ei:cried out,Miserere mei, saying to him:Domine fili David:“Take pity on me, Lord, filia mea male a dæmonio vexatur.Son of David. My daughter is badly afflicted by a demon.”
Qui non respondit ei verbum. He did not say a word to her.Et accedentes discipuli ejus rogabant eum dicentes:And his disciples, drawing near, petitioned him,Dimitte eam:saying: “Dismiss her, quia clamat post nos.for she is crying out after us.”
Ipse autem respondens ait:And responding,Non sum missus nisi ad oves,he said,quæ perierunt domus Israël.“I was not sent except to the sheep who have fallen away from the house of Israel.”
At illa venit,But she approachedet adoravit eum,and adored him, dicens:saying,Domine,“Lord, adjuva me.help me.”
Qui respondens ait:And responding,Non est bonum sumere panem filiorum,he said,et mittere canibus.“It is not good to take the bread of the children and cast it to the dogs.”
At illa dixit:But she said,Etiam Domine:“Yes,namLord,et catelli edunt de micis quæ cadunt de mensa dominorum suorum.but the young dogs also eat from the crumbs that fall from the table of their masters.”
Tunc respondens Jesus,Then Jesus, responding, ait illi:said to her:O mulier,“O woman, magna est fides tua: fiat tibi sicut vis.great is your faith. Let it be done for you just as you wish.”Et sanata est filia ejus ex illa hora. And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
Et cum transisset inde Jesus,And when Jesus had passed from there, venit secus mare Galilææ:he arrived beside the sea of Galilee.et ascendens in montem,And ascending onto a mountain, sedebat ibi.he sat down there.
Et accesserunt ad eum turbæ multæ,And great multitudes came to him, habentes secum mutos, having with them the mute,cæcos, the blind, claudos, the lame, debiles, the disabled,et alios multos:and many others.et projecerunt eos ad pedes ejus,And they cast them down at his feet,et curavit eos,and he cured them,
ita ut turbæ mirarentur,so much so that the crowds wondered, videntes mutos loquentes, seeing the mute speaking, claudos ambulantes, the lame walking,cæcos videntes:the blind seeing.et magnificabant Deum Israël.And they magnified the God of Israel.
Jesus autem,And Jesus, convocatis discipulis suis, calling together his disciples, said:dixit: Misereor turbæ,“I have compassion on the crowds, quia triduo jam perseverant mecum, because they have persevered with me now for three days,et non habent quod manducent:and they do not have anything to eat.et dimittere eos jejunos nolo,And I am not willing to dismiss them, fasting,ne deficiant in via.lest they faint along the way.”
Et dicunt ei discipuli: Unde ergo nobis in deserto panes tantos, ut saturemus turbam tantam? And the disciples said to him: “From where, then, in the desert, would we obtain enough bread to satisfy so a great multitude?”
Et ait illis Jesus:And Jesus said to them,Quot habetis panes?“How many loaves of bread do you have?”At illi dixerunt:But they said,Septem,“Seven,et paucos pisciculos.and a few little fish.”
Et præcepit turbæ ut discumberent super terram. And he instructed the crowds to recline upon the ground.
Et accipiens septem panes,And taking the seven loaveset pisces, and the fish,et gratias agens, and giving thanks, fregit,he brokeet dedit discipulis suis, and gave to his disciples,et discipuli dederunt populo.and the disciples gave to the people.
Et comederunt omnes,And they all ate and were satisfied.et saturati sunt. And,Et quod superfuit de fragmentis, from what was left over of the fragments, tulerunt septem sportas plenas.they took up seven full baskets.
Erant autem qui manducaverunt quatuor millia hominum,But those who ate were four thousand men, extra parvulos et mulieres.plus children and women.
Et, dimissa turba,And having dismissed the crowd, ascendit in naviculam: et venit in fines Magedan.he climbed into a boat. And he went into the coastal region of Magadan.
