Et accesserunt ad eum pharisæi et sadducæi tentantes:And Pharisees and Sadducees approached him to test him,et rogaverunt eum ut signum de cælo ostenderet eis.and they asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
At ille respondens,But he responded by saying to them:ait illis:“When evening arrives,Facto vespere dicitis:you say,Serenum erit,‘It will be calm, rubicundum est enim cælum.for the sky is red,’
Et mane:and in the morning,Hodie tempestas,‘Today there will be a storm, for the sky is red and gloomy.’rutilat enim triste cælum. So then, you know how to judge the appearance of the sky, but you are unable to know the signs of the times?
Faciem ergo cæli dijudicare nostis: signa autem temporum non potestis scire? An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign.Generatio mala et adultera signum quærit:And a sign shall not be given to it,et signum non dabitur ei, nisi signum Jonæ prophetæ.except the sign of the prophet Jonah.”Et relictis illis, abiit. And leaving them behind, he went away.
Et cum venissent discipuli ejus trans fretum,And when his disciples went across the sea, obliti sunt panes accipere.they forgot to bring bread.
Qui dixit illis:And he said to them,Intuemini, et cavete a fermento pharisæorum et sadducæorum.“Consider and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”
At illi cogitabant intra se dicentes:But they were thinking within themselves, saying,Quia panes non accepimus.“It is because we have not brought bread.”
Sciens autem Jesus,Then Jesus, knowing this, said:dixit: Quid cogitatis intra vos modicæ fidei,“Why do you consider within yourselves, O little in faith, quia panes non habetis?that it is because you have no bread?
Nondum intelligitis,Do you not yet understand, neque recordamini quinque panum in quinque millia hominum, nor remember, the five loaves among the five thousand men,et quot cophinos sumpsistis?and how many containers you took up?
neque septem panum in quatuor millia hominum,Or the seven loaves among the four thousand men,et quot sportas sumpsistis?and how many baskets you took up?
Quare non intelligitis,Why do you not understand that it was not because of bread that I said to you:quia non de pane dixi vobis:Beware of the leaven of the PhariseesCavete a fermento pharisæorum et sadducæorum?and the Sadducees?”
Tunc intellexerunt quia non dixerit cavendum a fermento panum,Then they understood that he was not saying that they should beware of the leaven of bread, sed a doctrina pharisæorum et sadducæorum.but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.
Venit autem Jesus in partes Cæsareæ Philippi:Then Jesus went into parts of Caesarea Philippi.et interrogabat discipulos suos,And he questioned his disciples, dicens:saying,Quem dicunt homines esse Filium hominis?“Who do men say that the Son of man is?”
At illi dixerunt:And they said,Alii Joannem Baptistam,“Some say John the Baptist, alii autem Eliam, and others say Elijah, alii vero Jeremiam, still others say Jeremiahaut unum ex prophetis.or one of the prophets.”
Dicit illis Jesus:Jesus said to them,Vos autem, quem me esse dicitis?“But who do you say that I am?”
Respondens Simon Petrus dixit:Simon Peter responded by saying,Tu es Christus,“You are the Christ,Filius Dei vivi.the Son of the living God.”
Respondens autem Jesus,And in response, dixit ei:Jesus said to him:Beatus es Simon Bar Jona:“Blessed are you, quia caroSimon son of Jonah.et sanguis non revelavit tibi,For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you,sed Pater meus, but my Father, qui in cælis est.who is in heaven.
Et ego dico tibi,And I say to you, quia tu es Petrus, that you are Peter,et super hanc petram ædificabo Ecclesiam meam, and upon this rock I will build my Church,et portæ inferi non prævalebunt adversus eam.and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.
Et tibi dabo claves regni cælorum. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.Et quodcumque ligaveris super terram,And whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound, erit ligatum et in cælis:even in heaven.et quodcumque solveris super terram,And whatever you shall release on earth shall be released, erit solutum et in cælis.even in heaven.”
Tunc præcepit discipulis suis ut nemini dicerent quia ipse esset Jesus Christus. Then he instructed his disciples that they should tell no one that he is Jesus the Christ.
Exinde cœpit Jesus ostendere discipulis suis,From that time, quia oporteret eum ire Jerosolymam,Jesus began to reveal to his disciples that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem,et multa pati a senioribus, and to suffer much from the elderset scribis, and the scribeset principibus sacerdotum, and the leaders of the priests,et occidi, and to be killed,et tertia die resurgere.and to rise again on the third day.
Et assumens eum Petrus,And Peter, taking him aside,cœpit increpare illum dicens:began to rebuke him, saying, “Lord,Absit a te, Domine:may it be far from you;non erit tibi hoc.this shall not happen to you.”
Qui conversus,And turning away, dixit Petro:Jesus said to Peter:Vade post me Satana,“Get behind me, Satan;scandalum es mihi:you are an obstacle to me.quia non sapis ea quæ Dei sunt,For you are not behaving according to what is of God,sed ea quæ hominum.but according to what is of men.”
Tunc Jesus dixit discipulis suis:Then Jesus said to his disciples:Si quis vult post me venire,“If anyone is willing to come after me,abneget semetipsum, let him deny himself,et tollat crucem suam, and take up his cross,et sequatur me.and follow me.
Qui enim voluerit animam suam salvam facere,For whoever would save his life, perdet eam:will lose it.qui autem perdiderit animam suam propter me,But whoever will have lost his life for my sake, inveniet eam.shall find it.
Quid enim prodest homini,For how does it benefit a man,si mundum universum lucretur,if he gains the whole world, animæ vero suæ detrimentum patiatur?yet truly suffers damage to his soul?aut quam dabit homo commutationem pro anima sua?Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Filius enim hominis venturus est in gloria Patris sui cum angelis suis:For the Son of man will arrive in the glory of his Father, with his Angels.et tunc reddet unicuique secundum opera ejus. And then he will repay each one according to his works.
Amen dico vobis,Amen I say to you, sunt quidam de hic stantibus, there are some among those standing here, qui non gustabunt mortem, who shall not taste death, donec videant Filium hominis venientem in regno suo.until they see the Son of man arriving in his reign.”
