In illa hora accesserunt discipuli ad Jesum, dicentes:In that hour, the disciples drew near to Jesus,Quis, saying, putas, major est in regno cælorum?“Whom do you consider to be greater in the kingdom of heaven?”

Et advocans Jesus parvulum,And Jesus, calling to himself a little child, statuit eum in medio eorum, placed him in their midst.

et dixit:And he said:Amen dico vobis,“Amen I say to you, nisi conversi fueritis, unless you changeet efficiamini sicut parvuli, and become like little children, non intrabitis in regnum cælorum.you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Quicumque ergo humiliaverit se sicut parvulus iste,Therefore, whoever will have humbled himself like this little child, hic est major in regno cælorum.such a one is greater in the kingdom of heaven.

Et qui susceperit unum parvulum talem in nomine meo,And whoever shall accept one such little child in my name,me suscipit:accepts me.

qui autem scandalizaverit unum de pusillis istis,But whoever will have led astray one of these little ones, qui in me credunt, who trust in me,expedit ei ut suspendatur mola asinaria in collo ejus,it would be better for him to have a great millstone hung around his neck,et demergatur in profundum maris.and to be submerged in the depths of the sea.

Væ mundo a scandalis!Woe to a world that leads people astray!Necesse est enim ut veniant scandala:Although it is necessary for temptations to arise, verumtamen væ homini illi, nevertheless:per quem scandalum venit.Woe to that man through whom temptation arises!

Si autem manus tua, vel pes tuus scandalizat te,So if your hand or your foot leads you to sin, abscide eum, et projice abs te:cut it off and cast it away from you.bonum tibi est ad vitam ingredi debilem, vel claudum,It is better for you to enter into life disabled or lame, quam duas manus vel duos pedes habentem mitti in ignem æternum.than to be sent into eternal fire having two hands or two feet.

Et si oculus tuus scandalizat te,And if your eye leads you to sin, erue eum, root it outet projice abs te:and cast it away from you.bonum tibi est cum uno oculo in vitam intrare,It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, quam duos oculos habentem mitti in gehennam ignis.than to be sent into the fires of Hell having two eyes.

Videte ne contemnatis unum ex his pusillis:See to it that you do not despise even one of these little ones.dico enim vobis,For I say to you, quia angeli eorum in cælis semper vident faciem Patris mei, that their Angels in heaven continually look upon the face of my Father, qui in cælis est.who is in heaven.

Venit enim Filius hominis salvare quod perierat. For the Son of man has come to save what had been lost.

Quid vobis videtur? How does it seem to you?si fuerint alicui centum oves,If someone has one hundred sheep,et erravit una ex eis:and if one of them has gone astray, nonne relinquit nonaginta novem in montibus, should he not leave behind the ninety-nine in the mountains,et vadit quærere eam quæ erravit?and go out to seek what has gone astray?

Et si contigerit ut inveniat eam:And if he should happen to find it:amen dico vobis,Amen I say to you, quia gaudet super eam magis quam super nonaginta novem, that he has more joy over that one,quæ non erraverunt.than over the ninety-nine which did not go astray.

Sic non est voluntas ante Patrem vestrum,Even so, it is not the will before your Father, qui in cælis est,who is in heaven,ut pereat unus de pusillis istis.that one of these little ones should be lost.

Si autem peccaverit in te frater tuus, vade,But if your brother has sinned against you,et corripe eum inter te, et ipsum solum:go and correct him, between you and him alone.si te audierit,If he listens to you, lucratus eris fratrem tuum.you will have regained your brother.

Si autem te non audierit,But if he will not listen you, adhibe tecum adhuc unum, invite with you onevel duos,or two more,ut in ore duorum,so that every word may stand by the mouth of twovel trium testium stet omne verbum.or three witnesses.

Quod si non audierit eos:And if he will not listen to them, dic ecclesiæ.tell the Church.Si autem ecclesiam non audierit,But if he will not listen to the Church, sit tibi sicut ethnicus et publicanus.let him be to you like the pagan and the tax collector.

Amen dico vobis,Amen I say to you,quæcumque alligaveritis super terram, whatever you will have bound on earth, erunt ligata et in cælo:shall be bound also in heaven,et quæcumque solveritis super terram, and whatever you will have released on earth, erunt soluta et in cælo.shall be released also in heaven.

Iterum dico vobis,Again I say to you, quia si duo ex vobis consenserint super terram, that if two of those among you have agreed on earth,de omni re quamcumque petierint, about anything whatsoever that they have requested, fiet illis a Patre meo,it shall be done for them by my Father, qui in cælis est.who is in heaven.

Ubi enim sunt duoFor wherever two or three are gathered in my name, vel tres congregati in nomine meo, there am I,ibi sum in medio eorum.in their midst.”

Tunc accedens Petrus ad eum,Then Peter, drawing near to him, said:dixit:“Lord,Domine, quoties peccabit in me frater meus, how many times shall my brother sin against me,et dimittam ei?and I forgive him?usque septies?Even seven times?”

Dicit illi Jesus:Jesus said to him:Non dico tibi usque septies:“I do not say to you, even seven times, sed usque septuagies septies.but even seventy times seven times.

Ideo assimilatum est regnum cælorum homini regi,Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is compared to a man who was king, qui voluit rationem ponere cum servis suis.who wanted to take account of his servants.

Et cum cœpisset rationem ponere,And when he had begun taking account, oblatus est ei unus, qui debebat ei decem millia talenta.one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.

Cum autem non haberet unde redderet,But since he did not have any way to repay it,jussit eum dominus ejus venundari, his lord ordered him to be sold,et uxorem ejus, with his wifeet filios, and children,et omnia quæ habebat, and all that he had,et reddi.in order to repay it.

Procidens autem servus ille,But that servant, falling prostrate, orabat eum, begged him, dicens:saying,Patientiam habe in me,‘Have patience with me,et omnia reddam tibi.and I will repay it all to you.’

Misertus autem dominus servi illius,Then the lord of that servant, being moved with pity, dimisit eum, released him,et debitum dimisit ei.and he forgave his debt.

Egressus autem servus ille invenit unum de conservis suis, qui debebat ei centum denarios:But when that servant departed, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him one hundred denarius.et tenens suffocavit eum,And taking hold of him, he choked him, dicens:saying:Redde quod debes.‘Repay what you owe.’

Et procidens conservus ejus,And his fellow servant, falling prostrate, rogabat eum, petitioned him, dicens:saying:Patientiam habe in me,‘Have patience with me,et omnia reddam tibi.and I will repay it all to you.’

Ille autem noluit:But he was not willing.sed abiit,Instead,et misit eum in carcerem donec redderet debitum.he went out and had him sent to prison, until he would repay the debt.

Videntes autem conservi ejus quæ fiebant,Now his fellow servants, contristati sunt valde:seeing what was done,et venerunt, were greatly saddened,et narraverunt domino suo omnia quæ facta fuerant.and they went and reported to their lord all that was done.

Tunc vocavit illum dominus suus: et ait illi:Then his lord called him, and he said to him:Serve nequam,‘You wicked servant, omne debitum dimisi tibi quoniam rogasti me:I forgave you all your debt, because you pleaded with me.

nonne ergo oportuit et te misereri conservi tui,Therefore, should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, sicut et ego tui misertus sum?just as I also had compassion on you?’

Et iratus dominus ejus tradidit eum tortoribus,And his lord, being angry, handed him over to the torturers, quoadusque redderet universum debitum.until he repaid the entire debt.

Sic et Pater meus cælestis faciet vobis,So, too, shall my heavenly Father do to you,si non remiseritis unusquisque fratri suo de cordibus vestris.if each one of you will not forgive his brother from your hearts.”
