Cum ergo natus esset Jesus in Bethlehem Juda in diebus Herodis regis,And so, when Jesus had been born in Bethlehem of Judah, in the days of king Herod, ecce magi ab oriente venerunt Jerosolymam, behold, Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,
dicentes:saying:Ubi est qui natus est rex Judæorum?“Where is he who was born king of the Jews?vidimus enim stellam ejus in oriente,For we have seen his star in the east,et venimus adorare eum.and we have come to adore him.”
Audiens autem Herodes rex,Now king Herod, hearing this, turbatus est,was disturbed,et omnis Jerosolyma cum illo.and all Jerusalem with him.
Et congregans omnes principes sacerdotum,And gathering together all the leaders of the priests,et scribas populi, and the scribes of the people, sciscitabatur ab eis ubi Christus nasceretur.he consulted with them as to where the Christ would be born.
At illi dixerunt:And they said to him:In Bethlehem Judæ:“In Bethlehem of Judea.sic enim scriptum est per prophetam:For so it has been written by the prophet:
Et tu Bethlehem terra Juda,‘And you, Bethlehem, the land of Judah, nequaquam minima es in principibus Juda:are by no means least among the leaders of Judah.ex te enim exiet dux, qui regat populum meum Israël.For from you shall go forth the ruler who shall guide my people Israel.’”
Tunc Herodes clam vocatis magis diligenter didicit ab eis tempus stellæ, quæ apparuit eis:Then Herod, quietly calling the Magi, diligently learned from them the time when the star appeared to them.
et mittens illos in Bethlehem,And sending them into Bethlehem, dixit:he said:Ite,“Go and diligently ask questions about the boy.et interrogate diligenter de puero:And when you have found him,et cum inveneritis, report back to me,renuntiate mihi,so that I,uttoo,et ego veniens adorem eum.may come and adore him.”
Qui cum audissent regem,And when they had heard the king, abierunt, they went away.et ecce stella,And behold, quam viderant in oriente, the star that they had seen in the east went before them, antecedebat eos, even until, usque dum veniens staret supra, arriving, ubi erat puer.it stood still above the place where the child was.
Videntes autem stellam gavisi sunt gaudio magno valde. Then, seeing the star, they were gladdened by a very great joy.
Et intrantes domum,And entering the home, invenerunt puerum cum Maria matre ejus, they found the boy with his mother Mary. And so,et procidentes adoraverunt eum:falling prostrate, they adored him.et apertis thesauris suis obtulerunt ei munera,And opening their treasures, they offered him gifts: gold, aurum, thus, frankincense,et myrrham.and myrrh.
Et responso accepto in somnis ne redirent ad Herodem,And having received a response in sleep that they should not return to Herod, per aliam viam reversi sunt in regionem suam.they went back by another way to their own region.
Qui cum recessissent,And after they had gone away, ecce angelus Domini apparuit in somnis Joseph, behold, dicens:an Angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph,Surge, saying:et accipe puerum,“Rise up,et matrem ejus, and take the boy and his mother,et fuge in Ægyptum, and flee into Egypt.et esto ibi usque dum dicam tibi. And remain there until I tell you.Futurum est enim ut Herodes quærat puerum ad perdendum eum.For it will happen that Herod will seek the boy to destroy him.”
Qui consurgens accepit puerumAnd getting up,et matrem ejus nocte,he took the boy and his mother by night,et secessit in Ægyptum:and withdrew into Egypt.
et erat ibi usque ad obitum Herodis:And he remained there, until the death of Herod,ut adimpleretur quod dictum est a Domino per prophetam dicentem:in order to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:Ex Ægypto vocavi filium meum.“Out of Egypt, I called my son.”
Tunc Herodes videns quoniam illusus esset a magis,Then Herod, iratus est valde, seeing that he had been fooled by the Magi,et mittens occidit omnes pueros, was very angry.qui erant in Bethlehem,And so he sent to kill all the boys who were in Bethlehem,et in omnibus finibus ejus, and in all its borders,a bimatu et infra secundum tempus, from two years of age and under, quod exquisierat a magis.according to the time that he had learned by questioning the Magi.
Tunc adimpletum est quod dictum est per Jeremiam prophetam dicentem:Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled, saying:
Vox in Rama audita est ploratus,“A voice has been heard in Ramah,et ululatus multus:great weeping and wailing:Rachel plorans filios suos,Rachel crying for her sons.et noluit consolari,And she was not willing to be consoled, quia non sunt.because they were no more.”
Defuncto autem Herode,Then, when Herod had passed away, ecce angelus Domini apparuit in somnis Joseph in Ægypto, behold, an Angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph in Egypt,
dicens:saying:Surge,“Rise up,et accipe puerum, and take the boyet matrem ejus, and his mother,et vade in terram Israël:and go into the land of Israel.defuncti sunt enim qui quærebant animam pueri. For those who were seeking the life of the boy have passed away.”
Qui consurgens,And rising up,accepit puerum,he took the boyet matrem ejus, and his mother,et venit in terram Israël.and he went into the land of Israel.
Audiens autem quod Archelaus regnaret in Judæa pro Herode patre suo,Then, hearing that Archelaus reigned in Judea in place of his father Herod, timuit illo ire:he was afraid to go there.et admonitus in somnis,And being warned in sleep, secessit in partes Galilææ.he withdrew into parts of Galilee.
Et veniens habitavit in civitate quæ vocatur Nazareth:And arriving, he lived in a city which is called Nazareth,ut adimpleretur quod dictum est per prophetas:in order to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets:Quoniam Nazaræus vocabitur.“For he shall be called a Nazarene.”
