In diebus autem illis venit Joannes Baptista prædicans in deserto Judææ,Now in those days, John the Baptist arrived, preaching in the desert of Judea,
et dicens:and saying:Pœnitentiam agite:“Repent.appropinquavit enim regnum cælorum. For the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.”
Hic est enim,For this is the one who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, qui dictus est per Isaiam prophetam dicentem:saying:Vox clamantis in deserto:“A voice crying out in the desert:Parate viam Domini;Prepare the way of the Lord.rectas facite semitas ejus.Make straight his paths.”
Ipse autem Joannes habebat vestimentum de pilis camelorum,Now the same John had a garment made from the hair of camels,et zonam pelliceam circa lumbos suos:and a leather belt around his waist.esca autem ejus erat locustæ,And his food was locustset mel silvestre.and wild honey.
Tunc exibat ad eum Jerosolyma,Then Jerusalem,et omnis Judæa,and all Judea,et omnis regio circa Jordanem;and the entire region around the Jordan went out to him.
et baptizabantur ab eo in Jordane,And they were baptized by him in the Jordan, confitentes peccata sua.acknowledging their sins.
Videns autem multos pharisæorum,Then,et sadducæorum, seeing many of the Phariseesvenientes ad baptismum suum, and Sadducees arriving for his baptism, dixit eis:he said to them:Progenies viperarum,“Progeny of vipers, quis demonstravit vobis fugere a ventura ira?who warned you to flee from the approaching wrath?
Facite ergo fructum dignum pœnitentiæ.Therefore, produce fruit worthy of repentance.
Et ne velitis dicere intra vos:And do not choose to say within yourselves,Patrem habemus Abraham.‘We have Abraham as our father.’Dico enim vobis quoniam potens est Deus de lapidibus istis suscitare filios Abrahæ.For I tell you that God has the power to raise up sons to Abraham from these stones.
Jam enim securis ad radicem arborum posita est. Omnis ergo arbor,For even now the axe has been placed at the root of the trees. Therefore,quæ non facit fructum bonum, excidetur, et in ignem mittetur.every tree that does not produce good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.
Ego quidem baptizo vos in aqua in pœnitentiam:Indeed, I baptize you with water for repentance, qui autem post me venturus est, fortior me est,but he who will come after me is more powerful than me.cujus non sum dignus calceamenta portare:I am not worthy to carry his shoes.ipse vos baptizabit in Spiritu Sancto, et igni.He will baptize you with the fire of the Holy Spirit.
Cujus ventilabrum in manu sua:His winnowing fan is in his hand.et permundabit aream suam:And he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor.et congregabit triticum suum in horreum,And he will gather his wheat into the barn.paleas autem comburet igni inextinguibili. But the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
Tunc venit Jesus a Galilæa in Jordanem ad Joannem,Then Jesus came from Galilee, to John at the Jordan,ut baptizaretur ab eo.in order to be baptized by him.
Joannes autem prohibebat eum,But John refused him, dicens:saying,Ego a te debeo baptizari,“I ought to be baptized by you,et tu venis ad me?and yet you come to me?”
Respondens autem Jesus,And responding, dixit ei:Jesus said to him:Sine modo:“Permit this for now.sic enim decet nos implere omnem justitiam. For in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all justice.”Tunc dimisit eum. Then he allowed him.
Baptizatus autem Jesus,And Jesus, having been baptized, confestim ascendit de aqua, ascended from the water immediately,et ecce aperti sunt ei cæli:and behold, the heavens were opened to him.et vidit Spiritum Dei descendentem sicut columbam,And he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove,et venientem super se.and alighting on him.
Et ecce vox de cælis dicens:And behold, there was a voice from heaven,Hic est Filius meus dilectus, saying: “This is my beloved Son,in quo mihi complacui.in whom I am well pleased.”
