Tunc Jesus locutus est ad turbas,Then Jesus spoke to the crowds,et ad discipulos suos, and to his disciples,
dicens:saying:Super cathedram Moysi sederunt scribæ et pharisæi.“The scribes and the Pharisees have sat down in the chair of Moses.
Omnia ergo quæcumque dixerint vobis, servate,Therefore, all things whatsoever that they shall say to you,et facite:observe and do.secundum opera vero eorum nolite facere:Yet truly, do not choose to act according to their works.dicunt enim,For they say,et non faciunt.but they do not do.
Alligant enim onera gravia,For they bind up heavyet importabilia, and unbearable burdens,et imponunt in humeros hominum:and they impose them on men’s shoulders.digito autem suo nolunt ea movere. But they are not willing to move them with even a finger of their own.
Omnia vero opera sua faciunt ut videantur ab hominibus:Truly, dilatant enim phylacteria sua, they do all their works so that they may be seen by men.et magnificant fimbrias. For they enlarge their phylacteries and glorify their hems.
Amant autem primos recubitus in cœnis,And they love the first places at feasts,et primas cathedras in synagogis, and the first chairs in the synagogues,
et salutationes in foro, and greetings in the marketplace,et vocari ab hominibus Rabbi.and to be called Master by men.
Vos autem nolite vocari Rabbi:But you must not be called Master.unus est enim magister vester,For One is your Master, omnes autem vos fratres estis.and you are all brothers.
Et patrem nolite vocare vobis super terram:And do not choose to call anyone on earth your father.unus est enim pater vester qui in cælis est.For One is your Father, who is in heaven.
Nec vocemini magistri:Neither should you be called teachers.quia magister vester unus est,For One is your Teacher,Christus.the Christ.
Qui major est vestrum, erit minister vester.Whoever is greater among you shall be your minister.
Qui autem se exaltaverit,But whoever has exalted himself, humiliabitur:shall be humbled.et qui se humiliaverit,And whoever has humbled himself, exaltabitur.shall be exalted.
Væ autem vobis scribæ et pharisæi hypocritæ,So then: Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, quia clauditis regnum cælorum ante homines!you hypocrites! For you close the kingdom of heaven before men.vos enim non intratis,For you yourselves do not enter, nec introëuntes sinitis intrare.and those who are entering, you would not permit to enter.
Væ vobis scribæ et pharisæi hypocritæ,Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites!quia comeditis domos viduarum,For you consume the houses of widows, orationes longas orantes!praying long prayers. Because of this, propter hoc amplius accipietis judicium.you shall receive the greater judgment.
Væ vobis scribæWoe to you,et pharisæi hypocritæ,scribes and Pharisees, quia circuitis mare, you hypocrites!et aridam,For you travel around by sea and by land,ut faciatis unum proselytum,in order to make one convert.et cum fuerit factus,And when he has been converted, facitis eum filium gehennæ duplo quam vos.you make him twice the son of Hell that you are yourselves.
Væ vobis duces cæci,Woe to you,qui dicitis:blind guides,Quicumque juraverit per templum, who say:nihil est:‘Whoever will have sworn by the temple, qui autem juraverit in auro templi,it is nothing.debet.But whoever will have sworn by the gold of the temple is obligated.’
Stulti et cæci:You are foolishquid enim majus est?and blind!aurum,For which is greater:an templum, the gold, quod sanctificat aurum?or the temple that sanctifies the gold?
Et quicumque juraverit in altari,And you say: ‘Whoever will have sworn by the altar, nihil est:it is nothing.quicumque autem juraverit in dono, quod est super illud, debet. But whoever will have sworn by the gift that is on the altar is obligated.’
Cæci: quid enim majus est,How blind you are! For which is greater:donum, the gift,an altare, quod sanctificat donum?or the altar that sanctifies the gift?
Qui ergo jurat in altari, jurat in eo,Therefore, whoever swears by the altar,et in omnibus quæ super illud sunt.swears by it, and by all that is on it.
Et quicumque juraverit in templo,And whoever will have sworn by the temple, jurat in illo, swears by it,et in eo qui habitat in ipso:and by him who dwells in it.
et qui jurat in cælo,And whoever swears by heaven, jurat in throno Dei,swears by the throne of God,et in eo qui sedet super eum.and by him who sits upon it.
Væ vobis scribæ et pharisæi hypocritæ,Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites!qui decimatis mentham, et anethum, et cyminum,For you collect tithes on mint and dill and cumin,et reliquistis quæ graviora sunt legis, judicium, but you have abandoned the weightier things of the law:et misericordiam, et fidem!judgment and mercy and faith.hæc oportuit facere,These you ought to have done,et illa non omittere.while not omitting the others.
Duces cæci,You blind guides,excolantes culicem,straining out a gnat,camelum autem glutientes.while swallowing a camel!
Væ vobis scribæ et pharisæi hypocritæ,Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites!quia mundatis quod deforis est calicis et paropsidis; For you clean what is outside the cup and the dish, intus autem pleni estis rapina et immunditia!but on the inside you are full of avarice and impurity.
Pharisæe cæce,You blind Pharisee!munda prius quod intus est calicis, et paropsidis,First clean the inside of the cup and the dish,ut fiat id, quod deforis est, mundum.and then what is outside becomes clean.
Væ vobis scribæ et pharisæi hypocritæ,Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites!quia similes estis sepulchris dealbatis,For you are like whitewashed sepulchers,quæ a foris parent hominibus speciosa, which outwardly appear brilliant to men, yet truly, intus vero pleni sunt ossibus mortuorum, et omni spurcitia!inside, they are filled with the bones of the dead and with all filth.
Sic et vos a foris quidem paretis hominibus justi:So also, you certainly appear to men outwardly to be just.intus autem pleni estis hypocrisi et iniquitate. But inwardly you are filled with hypocrisy and iniquity.
Væ vobis scribæWoe to you,et pharisæi hypocritæ,scribes and Pharisees, qui ædificatis sepulchra prophetarum, you hypocrites,et ornatis monumenta justorum, who build the sepulchers of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the just.
et dicitis:And then you say,Si fuissemus in diebus patrum nostrorum,‘If we had been there in the days of our fathers, non essemus socii eorum in sanguine prophetarum!we would not have joined with them in the blood of the prophets.’
itaque testimonio estis vobismetipsis,And so you are witnesses against yourselves, quia filii estis eorum, qui prophetas occiderunt.that you are the sons of those who killed the prophets.
Et vos implete mensuram patrum vestrorum.Complete, then, the measure of your fathers.
Serpentes,You serpents, genimina viperarum, you brood of vipers!quomodo fugietis a judicio gehennæ?How will you escape from the judgment of Hell?
Ideo ecce ego mitto ad vos prophetas,For this reason, behold, I send to you prophets and wise men,et sapientes, and scribes.et scribas, et ex illis occidetis, et crucifigetis,And some of these you will put to death and crucify;et ex eis flagellabitis in synagogis vestris, et persequemini de civitate in civitatem:and some you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city,
ut veniat super vos omnis sanguis justus,so that upon you may fall all the blood of the just, qui effusus est super terram, which has been shed upon the earth,a sanguine Abel justi usque ad sanguinem Zachariæ,from the blood of Abel the just, filii Barachiæ,even to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, quem occidistis inter templum et altare.whom you killed between the temple and the altar.
Amen dico vobis,Amen I say to you, venient hæc omnia super generationem istam.all these things shall fall upon this generation.
Jerusalem,Jerusalem,Jerusalem,Jerusalem!quæ occidis prophetas, et lapidas eos, qui ad te missi sunt,You kill the prophets and stone those who have been sent to you.quoties volui congregare filios tuos,How often I have wanted to gather your children together, quemadmodum gallina congregat pullos suos sub alas, et noluisti?in the way that a hen gathers her young under her wings. But you were not willing!
Ecce relinquetur vobis domus vestra deserta.Behold, your house shall be abandoned to you, having been deserted.
Dico enim vobis,For I say to you,non me videbitis amodo, you shall not see me again, donec dicatis:until you say:Benedictus, qui venit in nomine Domini.‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
