Tunc Jesus ductus est in desertum a Spiritu,Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert,ut tentaretur a diabolo.in order to be tempted by the devil.

Et cum jejunasset quadraginta diebus,And when he had fasted for forty dayset quadraginta noctibus, and forty nights, postea esuriit.afterwards he was hungry.

Et accedens tentator dixit ei:And approaching, the tempter said to him,Si Filius Dei es,“If you are the Son of God,dic ut lapides isti panes fiant.tell these stones to become bread.”

Qui respondens dixit:And in response he said,Scriptum est:“It has been written:Non in solo pane vivit homo,‘Not by bread alone shall man live, sed in omni verbo, quod procedit de ore Dei.but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”

Tunc assumpsit eum diabolus in sanctam civitatem,Then the devil took him up, into the holy city,et statuit eum super pinnaculum templi, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple,

et dixit ei:and said to him:Si Filius Dei es,“If you are the Son of God,mitte te deorsum.cast yourself down.Scriptum est enim:For it has been written:Quia angelis suis mandavit de te,‘For he has given charge of you to his angels,et in manibus tollent te,and they shall take you into their hands,ne forte offendas ad lapidem pedem tuum.lest perhaps you may hurt your foot against a stone.’”

Ait illi Jesus:Jesus said to him,Rursum scriptum est:“Again, it has been written:Non tentabis Dominum Deum tuum.‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”

Iterum assumpsit eum diabolus in montem excelsum valde:Again, the devil took him up, onto a very high mountain,et ostendit ei omnia regna mundi, et gloriam eorum, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory,

et dixit ei:and said to him,Hæc omnia tibi dabo,“All these things I will give to you,si cadens adoraveris me.if you will fall down and adore me.”

Tunc dicit ei Jesus:Then Jesus said to him:Vade Satana:“Go away, Satan.Scriptum est enim:For it has been written:Dominum Deum tuum adorabis,‘You shall adore the Lord your God,et illi soli servies.and him only shall you serve.’”

Tunc reliquit eum diabolus:Then the devil left him.et ecce angeli accesserunt,And behold,et ministrabant ei.Angels approached and ministered to him.

Cum autem audisset Jesus quod Joannes traditus esset,And when Jesus had heard that John had been handed over, secessit in Galilæam:he withdrew into Galilee.

et, relicta civitate Nazareth, venit,And leaving behind the city of Nazareth,et habitavit in Capharnaum maritima,he went and lived in Capernaum, near the sea,in finibus Zabulon et Nephthalim:at the borders of Zebulun and of Naphtali,

ut adimpleretur quod dictum est per Isaiam prophetam:in order to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:

Terra Zabulon,“Land of Zebulunet terra Nephthalim, and land of Naphtali, via maris trans Jordanem, the way of the sea across the Jordan,Galilæa gentium:Galilee of the Gentiles:

populus, qui sedebat in tenebris, vidit lucem magnam:A people who were sitting in darkness have seen a great light.et sedentibus in regione umbræ mortis,And unto those sitting in the region of the shadow of death, lux orta est eis.a light has risen.”

Exinde cœpit Jesus prædicare, et dicere:From that time, Jesus began to preach,Pœnitentiam agite:and to say: “Repent.appropinquavit enim regnum cælorum. For the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.”

Ambulans autem Jesus juxta mare Galilææ,And Jesus, vidit duos fratres, walking near the Sea of Galilee,Simonem, saw two brothers, qui vocatur Petrus,Simon who is called Peter,et Andream fratrem ejus, and his brother Andrew, mittentes rete in mare (erant enim piscatores),casting a net into the sea (for they were fishermen).

et ait illis:And he said to them:Venite post me,“Follow me,et faciam vos fieri piscatores hominum.and I will make you fishers of men.”

At illi continuo relictis retibus secuti sunt eum.And at once, leaving behind their nets, they followed him.

Et procedens inde,And continuing on from there, vidit alios duos fratres,he saw another two brothers,Jacobum Zebedæi,James of Zebedee,et Joannem fratrem ejus, and his brother John,in navi cum Zebedæo patre eorum,in a ship with their father Zebedee, reficientes retia sua:repairing their nets.et vocavit eos.And he called them.

Illi autem statim relictis retibusAnd immediately,et patre, leaving their nets and their father behind, secuti sunt eum.they followed him.

Et circuibat Jesus totam Galilæam,And Jesus traveled throughout all of Galilee, docens in synagogis eorum, teaching in their synagogues,et prædicans Evangelium regni:and preaching the Gospel of the kingdom,et sanans omnem languorem, and healing every sicknesset omnem infirmitatem in populo.and every infirmity among the people.

Et abiit opinio ejus in totam Syriam,And reports of him went out to all of Syria,et obtulerunt ei omnes male habentes, and they brought to him all those who had maladies, variis languoribus, those who were in the grasp of various sicknesseset tormentis comprehensos, and torments,et qui dæmonia habebant, and those who were in the hold of demons,et lunaticos, and the mentally ill,et paralyticos, and paralytics.et curavit eos:And he cured them.

et secutæ sunt eum turbæ multæ de Galilæa,And a great crowd followed him from Galilee,et Decapoli, and from the Ten Cities,et de Jerosolymis, and from Jerusalem,et de Judæa,and from Judea,et de trans Jordanem.and from across the Jordan.
