Et venerat mensis septimus:And the seventh month had arrived.filii autem Israël erant in civitatibus suis. Now the sons of Israel were in their cities.Congregatusque est omnis populus quasi vir unus ad plateam quæ est ante portam aquarum:And all the people were gathered together, like one man, in the street which is before the water gate.et dixerunt Esdræ scribæ ut afferret librum legis Moysi,And they spoke to Ezra the scribe, so that he would bring the book of the law of Moses, quam præceperat Dominus Israëli.which the Lord had instructed to Israel.

Attulit ergo Esdras sacerdos legem coram multitudine virorumTherefore,et mulierum,Ezra the priest brought the law before the multitude of men and women, cunctisque qui poterant intelligere, and all those who were able to understand,in die prima mensis septimi.on the first day of the seventh month.

Et legit in eo aperte in platea quæ erat ante portam aquarum,And he read it openly in the street which was before the water gate,de mane usque ad mediam diem, from morning even until midday,in conspectu virorum et mulierum,in the sight of the men and women,et sapientium:and those who understood.et aures omnis populi erant erectæ ad librum. And the ears of all the people were attentive to the book.

Stetit autem Esdras scriba super gradum ligneum,Then Ezra the scribe stood upon a step of wood,quem fecerat ad loquendum:which he had made for speaking.et steterunt juxta eum Mathathias,And standing beside him were Mattithiah,et Semeia,and Shemaiah,et Ania,and Anaiah,et Uria,and Uriah,et Helcia,and Hilkiah,et Maasia,and Maaseiah,ad dexteram ejus:on his right.et ad sinistram, Phadaia,And on the left were Pedaiah,Misaël,Mishael,et Melchia,and Malchijah,et Hasum,and Hashum,et Hasbadana,and Hashbaddanah,Zacharia,Zechariah,et Mosollam.and Meshullam.

Et aperuit Esdras librum coram omni populo:And Ezra opened the book before all the people.super universum quippe populum eminebat:For he stood out above all the people.et cum aperuisset eum,And when he had opened it,stetit omnis populus.all the people stood up.

Et benedixit Esdras Domino Deo magno:And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God.et respondit omnis populus:And all the people responded,Amen,“Amen, amen,Amen,”elevans manus suas:lifting up their hands.et incurvati sunt,And they bowed down,et adoraverunt Deum proni in terram.and they adored God, facing the ground.

Porro Josue,Then Jeshua,et Bani, and Bani,et Serebia, and Sherebiah,Jamin,Jamin,Accub,Akkub,Septhai,Shabbethai,Odia,Hodiah,Maasia,Maaseiah,Celita,Kelita,Azarias,Azariah,Jozabed,Jozabad,Hanan,Hanan,Phalaia,Pelaiah,Levitæ,the Levites, silentium faciebant in populo ad audiendam legem:caused the people to be silent in order to hear the law.populus autem stabat in gradu suo.And the people were standing on their feet.

Et legerunt in libro legis Dei distincte,And they read from the book of the law of God,et aperte ad intelligendum:distinctly and plainly, so as to be understood.et intellexerunt cum legeretur. And when it was read, they did understand.

Dixit autem Nehemias (ipse est Athersatha) et Esdras sacerdos et scriba,Then Nehemiah (the same is the cupbearer) and Ezra, the priest and scribe, and the Levites,et Levitæ interpretantes universo populo:who were interpreting for all the people, said:Dies sanctificatus est Domino Deo nostro:“This day has been sanctified to the Lord our God. Do not mourn, nolite lugere, and do not weep.”et nolite flere. Flebat enim omnis populus cum audiret verba legis. For all of the people were weeping, as they were listening to the words of the law.

Et dixit eis:And he said to them:Ite,“Go,comedite pinguia, eat fat foodset bibite mulsum, and drink sweet drinks,et mittite partes his qui non præparaverunt sibi, and send portions to those who have not prepared for themselves.quia sanctus dies Domini est:For it is the holy day of the Lord.et nolite contristari:And do not be sad.gaudium etenim Domini est fortitudo nostra. For the joy of the Lord is also our strength.”

Levitæ autem silentium faciebant in omni populo,Then the Levites caused the people to be silent, dicentes:saying:Tacete,“Be quiet.quia dies sanctus est,For the day is holy.et nolite dolere. And do not be sorrowful.”

Abiit itaque omnis populus ut comederet,And so all the people went forth,et biberet,so that they might eat and drink,et mitteret partes, and so that they might send portions,et faceret lætitiam magnam:and so that they might make a great rejoicing.quia intellexerant verba quæ docuerat eos.For they understood the words that he had taught to them.

Et in die secundo congregati sunt principes familiarum universi populi,And on the second day, sacerdotesthe leaders of the families of all the people,et Levitæ,the priests,ad Esdram scribam, and the Levites were gathered together to Ezra the scribe,ut interpretaretur eis verba legis.so that he might interpret for them the words of the law.

Et invenerunt scriptum in lege præcepisse Dominum in manu Moysi ut habitent filii Israël in tabernaculis in die solemni, mense septimo:And they found written in the law, which the Lord had instructed by the hand of Moses, that the sons of Israel should live in tabernacles on the day of solemnity in the seventh month,

et ut prædicent, and that they should proclaimet divulgent vocem in universis urbibus suis, and send out a voice in all their citieset in Jerusalem, and in Jerusalem, dicentes:saying:Egredimini in montem,“Go forth to the mount,et afferte frondes olivæ,and bring olive branches,et frondes ligni pulcherrimi, and the branches of beautiful trees, frondes myrti, myrtle branches,et ramos palmarum, and palm branches,et frondes ligni nemorosi, and the branches of thick trees,”ut fiant tabernacula,so that they might make tabernacles, sicut scriptum est.just as it was written.

Et egressus est populus,And the people went forth and brought.et attulerunt. And they made for themselves tabernacles,Feceruntque sibi tabernacula unusquisque in domate suo:each one at his own dwelling,et in atriis suis, and in their courts,et in atriis domus Dei,and in the courts of the house of God,et in platea portæ aquarum, and in the street of the water gate,et in platea portæ Ephraim.and in the street of the gate of Ephraim.

Fecit ergo universa ecclesia eorum qui redierant de captivitate, tabernacula,Therefore, the entire assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made tabernacles and lived in tabernacles.et habitaverunt in tabernaculis:For from the days of Jeshua, non enim fecerant a diebus Josue filii Nun taliter filii Israël usque ad diem illum.the son of Nun, even to that day, the sons of Israel had not done so.Et fuit lætitia magna nimis. And there was exceedingly great rejoicing.

Legit autem in libro legis Dei per dies singulos,Now he read in the book of the law of God, throughout each day,a die primo usque ad diem novissimum.from the first day even to the very last day.Et fecerunt solemnitatem septem diebus,And they kept the solemnity for seven days. And on the eighth day,et in die octavo collectam juxta ritum.there was a gathering according to the ritual.
