In die autem vigesimo quarto mensis hujus,Then, convenerunt filii Israël in jejunioon the twenty-fourth day of the same month,et in saccis, the sons of Israel came together in fasting and in sackcloth,et humus super eos.and with soil upon them.

Et separatum est semen filiorum Israël ab omni filio alienigena:And the offspring of the sons of Israel were separated from all the sons of foreigners.et steterunt,And they stood up,et confitebantur peccata sua,and they confessed their sinset iniquitates patrum suorum.and the iniquities of their fathers.

Et consurrexerunt ad standum:And they arose to stand.et legerunt in volumine legis Domini Dei sui,And they read in the volume of the law of the Lord their God,quater in die, four times in the day,et quater confitebantur, and four times they confessed.et adorabant Dominum Deum suum. And they adored the Lord their God.

Surrexerunt autem super gradum Levitarum Josue,Then, upon the step of the Levites, Jeshua,et Bani, and Bani,et Cedmihel, and Kadmiel,Sabania,Shebaniah,Bonni,Bunni,Sarebias,Sherebiah,Bani,Bani,et Chanani: et clamaverunt voce magna ad Dominum Deum suum.and Chenani rose up. And they cried out in a great voice to the Lord their God.

Et dixerunt Levitæ Josue,And the Levites, Jeshua and Kadmiel,et Cedmihel, Bonni,Bunni, Hashabneiah,Hasebnia,Sherebiah,Serebia, Odaia,Hodiah, Shebaniah,Sebnia, Phathathia:and Pethahiah said:Surgite,“Rise up.benedicite Domino Deo vestro ab æterno usque in æternum:Bless the Lord your God, from eternity even to eternity!et benedicant nomini gloriæ tuæ excelso in omni benedictione et laude. And blessed be the exalted name of your glory, with all blessing and praise.

Tu ipse, Domine,You yourself alone, solus,O Lord,tu fecisti cælum, et cælum cælorum, made heaven, and the heaven of the heavens,et omnem exercitum eorum:and all their host, terram, et universa quæ in ea sunt:the earth and all things that are in it,maria, et omnia quæ in eis sunt:the seas and all things that are in them.et tu vivificas omnia hæc,And you gave life to all these things.et exercitus cæli te adorat. And the host of heaven adores you.

Tu ipse,You yourself,Domine Deus,O Lord God,qui elegisti Abram, are the One who chose Abram.et eduxisti eum de igne Chaldæorum,And you led him away from the fire of the Chaldeans,et posuisti nomen ejus Abraham:and you gave him the name Abraham.

et invenisti cor ejus fidele coram te,And you found his heart to be faithful before you.et percussisti cum eo fœdus ut dares ei terram Chananæi,And you formed a covenant with him, so that you might give to him the land of the Canaanite,Hethæi,of the Hittite,et Amorrhæi,and of the Amorite,et Pherezæi,and of the Perizzite,et Jebusæi,and of the Jebusite,et Gergesæi,and of the Girgashite,ut dares semini ejus:so that you might give it to his offspring.et implesti verba tua,And you have fulfilled your words, quoniam justus es.for you are just.

Et vidisti afflictionem patrum nostrorum in Ægypto,And you saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt.clamoremque eorum audisti super mare Rubrum. And you heard their outcry beside the Red Sea.

Et dedisti signa atque portenta in Pharaone,And you gave signs and portents to Pharaoh,et in universis servis ejus, and to all his servants,et in omni populo terræ illius:and to the people of his land.cognovisti enim quia superbe egerant contra eos:For you knew that they acted arrogantly against them.et fecisti tibi nomen,And you made a name for yourself, sicut et in hac die.just as it is in this day.

Et mare divisisti ante eos,And you divided the sea before them,et transierunt per medium maris in sicco:and they crossed through the midst of the sea on dry land.persecutores autem eorum projecisti in profundum,But their pursuers you cast into the depths, quasi lapidem in aquas validas.like a stone into great waters.

Et in columna nubis ductor eorum fuisti per diem,And in the pillar of cloud, you were their leader by day,et in columna ignis per noctem, and in the pillar of fire, by night,ut appareret eis via per quam ingrediebantur.so that they might see the way along which they might advance.

Ad montem quoque Sinai descendisti,You also descended to mount Sinai,et locutus es cum eis de cælo,and you spoke with them from heaven.et dedisti eis judicia recta,And you gave them upright judgments,et legem veritatis, and the law of truth,cæremonias, and ceremonies,et præcepta bona:and good precepts.

et sabbatum sanctificatum tuum ostendisti eis: et mandata,You revealed to them your sanctified Sabbath, and you instructed them in commandments,et cæremonias, and ceremonies,et legem præcepisti eis in manu Moysi servi tui.and the law, by the hand of Moses, your servant.

Panem quoque de cælo dedisti eis in fame eorum,You also gave them bread from heaven in their hunger,et aquam de petra eduxisti eis sitientibus, and you brought forth water from the rock for them in their thirst.et dixisti eis ut ingrederentur et possiderent terram,And you said to them that they should enter and possess the land, super quam levasti manum tuam ut traderes eis.over which you lifted up your hand so that you might give it to them.

Ipsi veroYet truly,et patres nostri superbe egerunt, they and our fathers acted arrogantly,et induraverunt cervices suas, and they hardened their necks,et non audierunt mandata tua.and they did not listen to your commandments.

Et noluerunt audire,And they were not willing to hear,et non sunt recordati mirabilium tuorum quæ feceras eis.and they did not remember,Et induraverunt cervices suas, your miracles which you had accomplished for them.et dederunt caput ut converterentur ad servitutem suam,And they hardened their necks, quasi per contentionem.and they offered their head,Tu autem,so that they would return to their servitude,Deus propitius,as if in contention.clemens,But you,et misericors,a forgiving God,longanimis, lenient and merciful,et multæ miserationis, longsuffering and full of compassion, non dereliquisti eos,did not abandon them.

et quidem cum fecissent sibi vitulum conflatilem,Indeed, even when they had made for themselves a molten calf,et dixissent:and they had said,Iste est deus tuus,‘This is your God,qui eduxit te de Ægypto:who led you away from Egypt!’feceruntque blasphemias magnas:and had committed great blasphemies,

tu autem in misericordiis tuis multis non dimisisti eos in deserto:even so, in the multitude of your mercies, you did not send them away in the desert.columna nubis non recessit ab eis per diem ut duceret eos in viam,The pillar of cloud did not withdraw from them by day, so that it might lead them on the way,et columna ignis per noctem ut ostenderet eis iter per quod ingrederentur.nor the pillar of fire by night, so that it might show them the way along which they might advance.

Et spiritum tuum bonum dedisti,And you gave them your good Spirit, qui doceret eos:so that he might teach them,et manna tuum non prohibuisti ab ore eorum, and you did not withhold your manna from their mouth,et aquam dedisti eis in siti.and you gave them water in their thirst.

Quadraginta annis pavisti eos in deserto,For forty years, you fed them in the desert, nihilque eis defuit: vestimenta eorum non inveteraverunt, and nothing was lacking to them; their garments did not grow old,et pedes eorum non sunt attriti.and their feet were not worn down.

Et dedisti eis regna,And you gave them kingdoms and peoples,et populos, and you distributed to them by lot.et partitus es eis sortes:And they possessed the land of Sihon,et possederunt terram Sehon, and the land of the king of Heshbon,et terram regis Hesebon, and the land of Og,et terram Og regis Basan.the king of Bashan.

Et multiplicasti filios eorum sicut stellas cæli,And you multiplied their sons like the stars of heaven.et adduxisti eos ad terram de qua dixeras patribus eorum ut ingrederenturAnd you led them into the land,et possiderent.about which you had said to their fathers that they would enter and possess it.

Et venerunt filii, et possederunt terram,And the sons arrived and possessed the land.et humiliasti coram eis habitatores terræ Chananæos,And you humbled the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, before them.et dedisti eos in manu eorum,And you delivered them into their hands,et reges eorum, with their kings,et populos terræ,and the people of the land,ut facerent eis sicut placebant illis.so that they might do with them just as it was pleasing to them.

Ceperunt itaque urbes munitas et humum pinguem,And so they seized fortified cities and fat soil.et possederunt domos plenas cunctis bonis:And they possessed houses filled with all kinds of goods, cisternas ab aliis fabricatas, cisterns made by others, vineyards, vineas, et oliveta, and olive groves,et ligna pomifera multa:and fruit trees in abundance.et comederunt, et saturati sunt,And they ate and were satisfied.et impinguati sunt,And they were fattened,et abundaverunt deliciis in bonitate tua magna.and they abounded with delights from your great goodness.

Provocaverunt autem te ad iracundiam,But they provoked you to wrath,et recesserunt a te,and they withdrew from you,et projecerunt legem tuam post terga sua:and they cast your law behind their backs.et prophetas tuos occiderunt,And they killed your prophets, qui contestabantur eos ut reverterentur ad te:who contended with them so that they might return to you.feceruntque blasphemias grandes. And they committed great blasphemies.

Et dedisti eos in manu hostium suorum,And so you gave them into the hand of their enemies,et afflixerunt eos.and they afflicted them.Et in tempore tribulationis suæ clamaverunt ad te,And in the time of their tribulation, they cried out to you,et tu de cælo audisti, and from heaven you heard them.et secundum miserationes tuas multas dedisti eis salvatores,And in accord with your great compassion, you gave to them saviors, qui salvarent eos de manu hostium suorum.who might save them from the hand of their enemies.

Cumque requievissent,But after they had rested, reversi sunt ut facerent malum in conspectu tuo, they turned back, so that they did evil in your sight.et dereliquisti eos in manu inimicorum suorum,And you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies,et possederunt eos.and they possessed them.Conversique sunt,And they converted,et clamaverunt ad te:and they cried out to you.tu autem de cælo exaudisti,And from heaven you heeded them,et liberasti eos in misericordiis tuis, and you freed them many times, multis temporibus.by your mercies.

Et contestatus es eos ut reverterentur ad legem tuam. And you contended with them, so that they might return to your law.Ipsi vero superbe egerunt,Yet truly, they acted in arrogance,et non audierunt mandata tua,and they did not listen to your commandments,et in judiciis tuis peccaverunt, and they sinned against your judgments, which,quæ faciet homo,if a man does them,et vivet in eis:he shall live by them.et dederunt humerum recedentem,And they withdrew from offering their shoulder,et cervicem suam induraverunt, nec audierunt.and they hardened their neck; neither would they listen.

Et protraxisti super eos annos multos,And you continued to forbear them for many years.et contestatus es eos in spiritu tuo per manum prophetarum tuorum:And you contended with them by your Spirit, through the hand of your prophets.et non audierunt,And they did not listen,et tradidisti eos in manu populorum terrarum.and so you delivered them into the hand of the peoples of the lands.

In misericordiis autem tuis plurimis non fecisti eos in consumptionem,Yet in your very many mercies, nec dereliquisti eos:you did not cause them to be consumed, quoniam Deus miserationumnor did you abandon them.et clemens es tu.For you are a compassionate and lenient God.

Nunc itaque Deus noster magne,Now therefore, fortisour great God,et terribilis, strong and terrible, custodiens pactumwho keeps covenant and mercy,et misericordiam, may you not avert your face from all the hardship that has found us,ne avertas a facie tua omnem laborem,we and our kings, qui invenit nos,and our leaders, reges nostros, and our priests,et principes nostros, and our prophets,et sacerdotes nostros, and our fathers,et prophetas nostros, and all the people,et patres nostros, from the days of king Assur,et omnem populum tuum a diebus regis Assur usque in diem hanc.even to this day.

Et tu justus es in omnibus quæ venerunt super nos:For you are just, concerning all things that have overwhelmed us.quia veritatem fecisti,For you have done truth, nos autem impie egimus.but we have acted impiously.

Reges nostri,Our kings, principes nostri, our leaders, sacerdotes nostriour priests,et patres nostri non fecerunt legem tuam, and our fathers have not done your law,et non attenderunt mandata tua,and they have not been attentive to your commandments and your testimonies,et testimonia tua quæ testificatus es in eis.to which you have testified among them.

Et ipsi in regnis suis,And they have not served you,et in bonitate tua multa quam dederas eis,in their kingdoms and with your many good things,et in terra latissimawhich you gave to them,et pingui quam tradideras in conspectu eorum, and in the very wide and fat land, non servierunt tibi, which you delivered into their sight, nec reversi sunt a studiis suis pessimis.nor did they return from their most wicked pursuits.

Ecce nos ipsi hodie servi sumus:Behold, we ourselves this day are servants.et terra quam dedisti patribus nostris ut comederent panem ejus, et quæ bona sunt ejus,And the land, which you gave to our fathers so that they might eat its bread and have its good things,et nos ipsi servi sumus in ea.we ourselves are servants within it.

Et fruges ejus multiplicantur regibus quos posuisti super nos propter peccata nostra:And its fruits are multiplied for the kings, whom you have set over us because of our sins.et corporibus nostris dominantur,And they rule over our bodies,et jumentis nostris secundum voluntatem suam:and over our cattle, according to their will.et in tribulatione magna sumus. And we are in great tribulation.

Super omnibus ergo his nos ipsi percutimus fœdus,Therefore, concerning all of these things,et scribimus: et signant principes nostri,we ourselves are forming and writing a covenant,Levitæ nostri, and our leaders,et sacerdotes nostri.our Levites, and our priests are signing it.”
