1Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen,And the Lord spoke to Moses,dicens:saying:
2Fac tibi duas tubas argenteas ductiles,“Make for yourself two trumpets of ductile silver,quibus convocare possis multitudinem quando movenda sunt castra.with which you may be able to call together the multitude when the camp is to be moved.
3Cumque increpueris tubis,And when you sound the trumpets,congregabitur ad te omnis turba ad ostium tabernaculi fœderis.all the multitude shall gather to you at the door of the tabernacle of the covenant.
4Si semel clangueris,If you sound it only once,venient ad te principes,the leaderset capita multitudinis Israël.and the heads of the multitude of Israel shall come to you.
5Si autem prolixiorBut if the sound of the trumpets is prolonged,atque concisus clangor increpuerit,but with interruptions,movebunt castra primi qui sunt ad orientalem plagam.those who are toward the east side shall move the camp first.
6In secundo autem sonituThen,et pari ululatu tubæ,at the second sounding of the trumpet with the same cadence,levabunt tentoria qui habitant ad meridiem;those who live toward the south shall take up their tents.et juxta hunc modum reliqui facient,And the remainder shall act in like manner,ululantibus tubis in profectionem.when the trumpets shall reverberate for a departure.
7Quando autem congregandus est populus,But when the people are to be gathered together,simplex tubarum clangor erit,the sound of the trumpets shall be simple,et non concise ululabunt.and the sounds shall not be separated.
8Filii autem Aaron sacerdotes clangent tubis:Now it is the sons of Aaron the priest who shall sound the trumpets.eritque hoc legitimum sempiternum in generationibus vestris.And this shall be an everlasting ordinance, in your generations.
9Si exieritis ad bellum de terra vestra contra hostes qui dimicant adversum vos,If you go forth to war from your land, against the enemies who set out against you,clangetis ululantibus tubis,you shall sound the trumpets repeatedly,et erit recordatio vestri coram Domino Deo vestro,and there shall be a remembrance of you before the Lord your God,ut eruamini de manibus inimicorum vestrorum.so that you may be rescued from the hands of your enemies.
10Siquando habebitis epulum,If at any time you will have a banquet,et dies festos,and on feast days,et calendas,and on the first days of the months,canetis tubis super holocaustis,you shall sound the trumpets over the holocaustset pacificis victimis,and the peace-offering victims,ut sint vobis in recordationem Dei vestri.so that they may be for you as a remembrance by your God.Ego Dominus Deus vester.I am the Lord your God.”
11Anno secundo,In the second year,mense secundo,in the second month,vigesima die mensis,on the twentieth day of the month,elevata est nubes de tabernaculo fœderis:the cloud was lifted up from the tabernacle of the covenant.
12profectique sunt filii Israël per turmas suas de deserto Sinai,And the sons of Israel set out by their companies from the desert of Sinai,et recubuit nubes in solitudine Pharan.and the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran.
13Moveruntque castra primi juxta imperium Domini in manu Moysi.And the first to move their camp, according to the command of the Lord by the hand of Moses,
14Filii Juda per turmas suas:were the sons of Judah by their companies,quorum princeps erat Nahasson filius Aminadab.whose leader was Nahshon the son of Amminadab.
15In tribu filiorum Issachar fuit princeps Nathanaël filius Suar.In the tribe of the sons of Issachar, the leader was Nathanael the son of Zuar.
16In tribu Zabulon erat princeps Eliab filius Helon.In the tribe of Zebulon, the leader was Eliab the son of Helon.
17Depositumque est tabernaculum,And the tabernacle was taken down,quod portantes egressi sunt filii Gerson et Merari.because the sons of Gershon and Merari, who carry it, were departing.
18Profectique sunt et filii Ruben,And the sons of Ruben also set out,per turmas et ordinem suum:by their companies and ranks,quorum princeps erat Helisur filius Sedeur.whose leader was Elizur the son of Shedeur.
19In tribu autem filiorum Simeon,And in the tribe of Simeon,princeps fuit Salamiel filius Surisaddai.the leader was Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.
20Porro in tribu Gad erat princeps Eliasaph filius Duel.And in the tribe of Gad, the leader was Eliasaph the son of Reuel.
21Profectique sunt et Caathitæ portantes sanctuarium.Then the Kohathites also set out, carrying the Sanctuary.Tamdiu tabernaculum portabatur,The tabernacle was carried, all the while,donec venirent ad erectionis locum.until they arrived at the place for setting it up.
22Moverunt castra et filii Ephraim per turmas suas,The sons of Ephraim also moved their camp by their companies,in quorum exercitu princeps erat Elisama filius Ammiud.and the leader of their army was Elishama the son of Ammihud.
23In tribu autem filiorum Manasse princeps fuit Gamaliel filius Phadassur.And in the tribe of the sons of Manasseh, the leader was Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.
24Et in tribu Benjamin erat dux Abidan filius Gedeonis.And in the tribe of Benjamin, the leader was Abidan the son of Gideoni.
25Novissimi castrorum omnium profecti sunt filii Dan per turmas suas,The last of all the camp to set out were the sons of Dan by their companies,in quorum exercitu princeps fuit Ahiezer filius Ammisaddai.and the leader of their army was Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.
26In tribu autem filiorum Aser erat princeps Phegiel filius Ochran.And in the tribe of the sons of Asher, the leader was Pagiel the son of Ochran.
27Et in tribu filiorum Nephthali princeps fuit Ahira filius Enan.And in the tribe of the sons of Naphtali, the leader was Ahira the son of Enan.
28Hæc sunt castra,These were the camps and departures of the sons of Israel by their companies,et profectiones filiorum Israël per turmas suas quando egrediebantur.when they went forth.
29Dixitque Moyses Hobab filio Raguel Madianitæ,And Moses said to Hobab the son of Raguel the Midianite,cognato suo:his kinsman:Proficiscimur ad locum quem Dominus daturus est nobis:“We are setting out to the place which the Lord will give to us.veni nobiscum,Come with us,ut benefaciamus tibi,so that we may do good to you.quia Dominus bona promisit Israëli.For the Lord has promised good things to Israel.”
30Cui ille respondit:And he answered him,Non vadam tecum,“I will not go with you,sed revertar in terram meam,but I will return to my own land,in qua natus sum.in which I was born.”
31Et ille: Noli,And he said:inquit, nos relinquere:“Do not choose to leave us.tu enim nosti in quibus locis per desertum castra ponere debeamus,For you know in which places in the desert we ought to make camp,et eris ductor noster.and so you shall be our guide.
32Cumque nobiscum veneris,And if you come with us,quidquid optimum fuerit ex opibus, quas nobis traditurus est Dominus,whatever will be best among the riches which the Lord will deliver to us,dabimus tibi.we will give to you.”
33Profecti sunt ergo de monte Domini viam trium dierum,Therefore, they set out from the Mountain of the Lord on a journey of three days.arcaque fœderis Domini præcedebat eos,And the ark of the covenant of the Lord preceded them,per dies tres providens castrorum locum.for three days, in order to provide a place for the camp.
34Nubes quoque Domini super eos erat per diem cum incederent.Likewise, the cloud of the Lord was over them, throughout the day, while they proceeded.
35Cumque elevaretur arca,And when the ark was lifted up,dicebat Moyses:Moses said, “Rise up,Surge,O Lord,Domine, et dissipentur inimici tui,and let your enemies be scattered,et fugiant qui oderunt te, a facie tua.and let those who hate you flee from your face.”
36Cum autem deponeretur,And when it was set down,aiebat:he said:Revertere,“Return,Domine,O Lord,ad multitudinem exercitus Israël.to the multitude of the army of Israel.”
