Locutaque est Maria et Aaron contra Moysen propter uxorem ejus Æthiopissam,And Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses, because of his wife, an Ethiopian,
et dixerunt:and they said:Num per solum Moysen locutus est Dominus?“Has the Lord spoken only through Moses?nonne et nobis similiter est locutus?Has he not also spoken similarly to us?”Quod cum audisset DominusAnd when the Lord had heard this,
(erat enim Moyses vir mitissimus super omnes homines qui morabantur in terra),(for Moses was a man exceedingly meek, beyond all the men who were living upon the earth)
statim locutus est ad eum, immediately he spoke to him,et ad Aaron et Mariam:and to Aaron and Miriam,Egredimini vos tantum tres ad tabernaculum fœderis.“Go out, you three only, to the tabernacle of the covenant.”Cumque fuissent egressi,And when they had gone out,
descendit Dominus in columna nubis, the Lord descended in a column of cloud,et stetit in introitu tabernaculi, and he stood at the entrance of the tabernacle, vocans Aaron et Mariam.calling to Aaron and Miriam.Qui cum issent,And when they had advanced,
dixit ad eos:he said to them:Audite sermones meos:“Listen to my words.si quis fuerit inter vos propheta Domini,If there will be among you a prophet of the Lord,in visione apparebo ei,I will appear to him in a vision, vel per somnium loquar ad illum.or I will speak to him through a dream.
At non talis servus meus Moyses,But it is not so with my servant Moses, qui in omni domo mea fidelissimus est:who is the most faithful in all my house.
ore enim ad os loquor ei:For I speak with him mouth to mouth,et palam, and plainly.et non per ænigmataAnd not through enigmas and figures does he perceive the Lord.et figuras Dominum videt. Therefore,Quare ergo non timuistis detrahere servo meo Moysi?why were you not afraid to disparage my servant Moses?”
Iratusque contra eos,And being angry against them, abiit:he went away.
nubes quoque recessit quæ erat super tabernaculum:Likewise, the cloud which was over the tabernacle withdrew.et ecce Maria apparuit candens lepra quasi nix.And behold, Miriam appeared to be white with a leprosy, like snow.Cumque respexisset eam Aaron,And when Aaron had looked upon her,et vidisset perfusam lepra, and he had seen the spreading of the leprosy,
ait ad Moysen:he said to Moses:Obsecro, domine mi,“I beg you, my lord,ne imponas nobis hoc peccatum quod stulte commisimus, not to impose upon us this sin, which we have committed foolishly.
ne fiat hæc quasi mortua,Do not let this one be like one who is dead,et ut abortivum quod projicitur de vulva matris suæ:or like an abortion that has been cast from the womb of her mother.ecce jam medium carnis ejus devoratum est a lepra.Behold, half of her flesh is already consumed by leprosy.”
Clamavitque Moyses ad Dominum,And Moses cried out to the Lord, dicens:saying,Deus,“O God,obsecro,I beg you:sana eam.heal her.”
Cui respondit Dominus:And the Lord answered him:Si pater ejus spuisset in faciem illius,“If her father had spit on her face, nonne debuerat saltem septem diebus rubore suffundi?should she not have been filled with shame for at least seven days? Let her be separated, separetur septem diebus extra castra, outside the camp, for seven days, and after that,et postea revocabitur.she will be called back.”
Exclusa est itaque Maria extra castra septem diebus:And so Miriam was excluded from the camp for seven days.et populus non est motus de loco illo,And the people did not move from that place, donec revocata est Maria.until Miriam was called back.
