Veneruntque filii Israël et omnis multitudo in desertum Sin,And the sons of Israel, and the entire multitude, went into the desert of Sin,mense primo,in the first month.et mansit populus in Cades. And the people stayed at Kadesh.Mortuaque est ibi Maria, et sepulta in eodem loco. And Miriam died there, and she was buried in the same place.
Cumque indigeret aqua populus,And when the people were in need of water, convenerunt adversum Moysen et Aaron:they came together against Moses and Aaron.
et versi in seditionem,And as it turned into sedition, dixerunt:they said:Utinam periissemus inter fratres nostros coram Domino.“If only we had perished among our brothers in the sight of the Lord.
Cur eduxistis ecclesiam Domini in solitudinem,Why have you led away the Church of the Lord, into the wilderness,ut et nos et nostra jumenta moriamur?so that both we and our cattle would die?
quare nos fecistis ascendere de Ægypto,Why did you cause us to ascend from Egypt,et adduxistis in locum istum pessimum, and why have you led us into this most wretched place, qui seri non potest, which is not able to be sown, qui nec ficum gignit, nec vineas, which does not produce figs, or vines, nec malogranata,or pomegranates, and which, insuper et aquam non habet ad bibendum?moreover, does not even have water to drink?”
Ingressusque Moyses et Aaron,And Moses and Aaron, dismissing the multitude, dimissa multitudine, tabernaculum fœderis, entered the tabernacle of the covenant, corruerunt proni in terram, and they fell prone on the ground, clamaveruntque ad Dominum, and they cried out to the Lord, atque dixerunt:and they said: “O Lord God,Domine Deus, audi clamorem hujus populi, listen to the outcry of this people, and open for them,et aperi eis thesaurum tuum fontem aquæ vivæ,from your storehouse, a fountain of living water, so that,ut satiati, being satisfied, cesset murmuratio eorum.their murmuring may cease.”Et apparuit gloria Domini super eos.And the glory of the Lord appeared over them.
Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen,And the Lord spoke to Moses, dicens:saying:
Tolle virgam,“Take the rod,et congrega populum, and gather the people,tu et Aaron frater tuus, you and your brother Aaron,et loquimini ad petram coram eis,and speak to the rock before them,et illa dabit aquas.and it shall bestow waters.Cumque eduxeris aquam de petra,And when you have brought forth water from the rock, bibet omnis multitudo et jumenta ejus.the entire multitude and their cattle shall drink.”
Tulit igitur Moyses virgam,Therefore, Moses took the rod,quæ erat in conspectu Domini, which was in the sight of the Lord, sicut præceperat ei,just as he had instructed him.
congregata multitudine ante petram:And having gathered the multitude before the rock, dixitque eis:he said to them:Audite,“Listen, rebelles et increduli:you who are rebellious and unbelieving.num de petra hac vobis aquam poterimus ejicere?Would we be able to cast out water from this rock?”
Cumque elevasset Moyses manum,And when Moses had lifted up his hand, percutiens virga bis silicem, striking the stone twice with the rod, egressæ sunt aquæ largissimæ,very great waters went forth, ita ut populus biberet et jumenta.so much so that the people and their cattle were able to drink.
Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen et Aaron:And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron,Quia non credidistis mihi,“Because you did not believe me,ut sanctificaretis me coram filiis Israël,so as to sanctify me before the sons of Israel, non introducetis hos populos in terram, you shall not lead this people into the land, quam dabo eis.which I will give to them.”
Hæc est aqua contradictionis,This is the Water of Contradiction, ubi jurgati sunt filii Israël contra Dominum, where the sons of Israel were quarreling against the Lord,et sanctificatus est in eis.and he was sanctified in them.
Misit interea nuntios Moyses de Cades ad regem Edom,Meanwhile, Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom.qui dicerent:They said:Hæc mandat frater tuus Israël:“Your brother Israel says this:Nosti omnem laborem qui apprehendit nos,You know of all the hardships which have overtaken us,
quomodo descenderint patres nostri in Ægyptum, how our fathers descended into Egypt,et habitaverimus ibi multo tempore, and we lived there for a long time, afflixerintque nos Ægyptii, and the Egyptians afflicted both uset patres nostros:and our fathers,
et quomodo clamaverimus ad Dominum, and how we cried out to the Lord,et exaudierit nos,and he heeded usmiseritque angelum, and sent an Angel, qui eduxerit nos de Ægypto.who led us away from Egypt.Ecce in urbe Cades,Behold,quæ est in extremis finibus tuis,we are situated in the city of Kadesh, positi, which is at the extremity of your borders.
obsecramus ut nobis transire liceat per terram tuam. Non ibimus per agros,And we beg you to permit us to cross through your land. We will not go through the fields, nec per vineas;nor through the vineyards;non bibemus aquas de puteis tuis:we will not drink the waters of your wells, sed gradiemur via publica, but we will travel by the public ways, nec ad dexteram nec ad sinistram declinantes, neither turning aside to the right, nor to the left, donec transeamus terminos tuos.until we have passed your borders.”
Cui respondit Edom:Edom responded to them:Non transibis per me,“You shall not cross through me,alioquin armatus occurram tibi.otherwise, I will meet you armed.”
Dixeruntque filii Israël:And the sons of Israel said:Per tritam gradiemur viam:“We will travel by the well-trodden path.et si biberimus aquas tuas,And if wenos et pecora nostra,or our cattle drink from your waters, dabimus quod justum est:we will give you what is just.nulla erit in pretio difficultas,There shall be no difficulty in the price, tantum velociter transeamus.only let us cross through quickly.”
At ille respondit: Non transibis.But he answered, “You shall not cross.”Statimque egressus est obvius, cum infinita multitudo, et manu forti,And immediately he went out to meet them with a countless multitude and a strong hand;
nec voluit acquiescere deprecanti, neither was he willing to agree to their petition to concede passage through his borders.ut concederet transitum per fines suos. For this reason,Quam ob rem divertit ab eo Israël.Israel diverted away from him.
Cumque castra movissent de Cades,And when they had moved the camp from Kadesh, venerunt in montem Hor,they arrived at mount Hor,qui est in finibus terræ Edom:which is at the borders of the land of Edom,
ubi locutus est Dominus ad Moysen:where the Lord spoke to Moses:
Pergat,“Let Aaron,”inquit,he said,Aaron ad populos suos:“go to his people.non enim intrabit terram, quam dedi filiis Israël,For he shall not enter into the land which I have given to the sons of Israel,eo quod incredulus fuerit ori meo, ad aquas contradictionis.because he did not believe my mouth at the Waters of Contradiction.
Tolle AaronTake Aaron,et filium ejus cum eo,and his son with him,et duces eos in montem Hor.and lead them on to mount Hor.
Cumque nudaveris patrem veste sua,And when you have stripped the father of his vestments, indues ea Eleazarum filium ejus:you shall put them on Eleazar,Aaron colligetur, his son.et morietur ibi.Aaron shall be gathered and shall die there.”
Fecit Moyses ut præceperat Dominus:Moses did just as the Lord had instructed.et ascenderunt in montem Hor coram omni multitudine. And they ascended mount Hor, in the sight of the entire multitude.
Cumque Aaron spoliasset vestibus suis,And when he had despoiled Aaron of his vestments, induit eis Eleazarum filium ejus.he clothed his son Eleazar with them.
Illo mortuo in montis supercilio,And when Aaron had died at the top of the mountain, descendit cum Eleazaro.Moses came down with Eleazar.
Omnis autem multitudo videns occubuisse Aaron,And the entire multitude, seeing that Aaron lay dead, flevit super eo triginta diebus per cunctas familias suas.wept over him for thirty days, throughout all their families.
