Quod cum audisset Chananæus rex Arad,And when king Arad the Canaanite, qui habitabat ad meridiem, who was living toward the south, venisse scilicet Israël per exploratorum viam, had heard this, namely, that Israel had arrived by the way of spies, pugnavit contra illum,he fought against them.et victor existens,And proving to be the victor, duxit ex eo prædam.he led away prey from them.
At Israël voto se Domino obligans,But Israel, obliging himself by a vow to the Lord, ait:said:Si tradideris populum istum in manu mea, delebo urbes ejus.“If you deliver this people into my hand, I will wipe away their cities.”
Exaudivitque Dominus preces Israël,And the Lord heard the prayers of Israel,et tradidit Chananæum,and he delivered the Canaanite, quem ille interfecit subversis urbibus ejus:whom they put to death, overthrowing his cities.et vocavit nomen loci illius Horma,And they called the name of that place Hormah,id est, that is,anathema.Anathema.
Profecti sunt autem et de monte Hor,Then they set out from mount Hor,per viam quæ ducit ad mare Rubrum,by the way that leads to the Red Sea,ut circumirent terram Edom.to circle around the land of Edom.Et tædere cœpit populum itineris ac laboris:And the people began to tire of their journey and hardships.
locutusque contra Deum et Moysen,And speaking against God and Moses, ait:they said:Cur eduxisti nos de Ægypto,“Why did you lead us away from Egypt,ut moreremur in solitudine?so as to die in the wilderness?deest panis,Bread is lacking;non sunt aquæ:there are no waters.anima nostra jam nauseat super cibo isto levissimo. Our soul is now nauseous over this very light food.”
Quam ob rem misit Dominus in populum ignitos serpentes,For this reason,ad quorum plagasthe Lord sent fiery serpents among the people,et mortes plurimorum, which wounded or killed many of them.
venerunt ad Moysen,And so they went to Moses, atque dixerunt:and they said:Peccavimus,“We have sinned, quia locuti sumus contra Dominumbecause we have spoken against the Lord and against you.et te:Pray, ora ut tollat a nobis serpentes.so that he may take away these serpents from us.”Oravitque Moyses pro populo,And Moses prayed for the people.
et locutus est Dominus ad eum:And the Lord said to him:Fac serpentem æneum,“Make a bronze serpent,et pone eum pro signo:and place it as a sign. Whoever, qui percussus aspexerit eum, having been struck, gazes upon it,vivet.shall live.”
Fecit ergo Moyses serpentem æneum,Therefore, Moses made a bronze serpent,et posuit eum pro signo:and he placed it as a sign.quem cum percussi aspicerent,When those who had been struck gazed upon it,sanabantur.they were healed.
Profectique filii Israël castrametati sunt in Oboth. And the sons of Israel, setting out, made camp at Oboth.
Unde egressi fixere tentoria in Jeabarim,Having departed from there, they pitched their tents at Iye-abarim,in solitudine quæ respicit Moab contra orientalem plagam.in the wilderness, which looks out toward Moab, opposite the eastern region.
Et inde moventes,And moving from there, venerunt ad torrentem Zared.they arrived at the Torrent of Zared.
Quem relinquentes castrametati sunt contra Arnon,Having left that place behind,quæ est in deserto, they then made camp opposite Arnon,et prominet in finibus Amorrhæi.which is in the desert,Siquidem Arnon terminus est Moab, and which juts out at the borders of the Amorite.dividens MoabitasFor certainly Arnon is at the limit of Moab,et Amorrhæos.dividing the Moabites and the Amorites.
Unde dicitur in libro bellorum Domini:About this place, it is said in the book of the wars of the Lord:Sicut fecit in mari Rubro,“As he did at the Red Sea,sic faciet in torrentibus Arnon.so will he do at the Torrents of Arnon.”
Scopuli torrentium inclinati sunt,The stones of the torrents were bent,ut requiescerent in Ar,so that they might rest in Aret recumberent in finibus Moabitarum.and lie back within the borders of the Moabites.
Ex eo loco apparuit puteus,Beyond that place appeared a well, super quo locutus est Dominus ad Moysen:about which the Lord said to Moses:Congrega populum,“Gather the people together,et dabo ei aquam.and I will give them water.”
Tunc cecinit Israël carmen istud:Then Israel sang this verse:Ascendat puteus.“Let the well rise up.”Concinebant:They sang:
Puteus,“The well, quem foderunt principes et paraverunt duces multitudinis in datore legis, the leaders dug it,et in baculis suis.and the commanders of the multitude prepared it,De solitudine,at the direction of the lawgiver,Matthana.and with their staffs.”
De Matthana in Nahaliel:They went from the wilderness to Mattanah,de Nahaliel in Bamoth.from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth,
De Bamoth, from Bamoth, vallis est in regione Moab,a valley in the region of Moab,in vertice Phasga,to the top of Pisgah, quod respicit contra desertum.which looks out opposite the desert.
Misit autem Israël nuntios ad Sehon regem Amorrhæorum,Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon, the king of the Amorites, dicens:saying:
Obsecro ut transire mihi liceat per terram tuam:“I beg you to permit me to cross through your land.non declinabimus in agros et vineas; We will not turn aside into the fields or the vineyards.non bibemus aquas ex puteis:We will not drink waters from the wells.via regia gradiemur,We will travel by the royal way, donec transeamus terminos tuos.until we have passed your borders.”
Qui concedere noluit ut transiret Israël per fines suos:And he was not willing to allow Israel to cross through his borders.quin potius exercitu congregato,But instead, egressus est obviam in desertum, gathering an army,et venit in Jasa,he went out to meet them in the desert, pugnavitque contra eum.and he arrived at Jahaz and fought against them.
A quo percussus est in ore gladii,And he was struck down by them with the edge of the sword,et possessa est terra ejus ab Arnon usque Jeboc, and they possessed his land from Arnon,et filios Ammon:even to Jabbok and the sons of Ammon.quia forti præsidio tenebantur termini Ammonitarum. For the borders of the Ammonites were held by a strong fortress.
Tulit ergo Israël omnes civitates ejus,Therefore,et habitavit in urbibus Amorrhæi,Israel took all his cities and lived in the cities of the Amorite,in Hesebon scilicet, namely,et viculis ejus.in Heshbon and its villages.
Urbs Hesebon fuit Sehon regis Amorrhæi,Heshbon was the city of Sihon, the king of the Amorites, qui pugnavit contra regem Moab:who fought against the king of Moab.et tulit omnem terram,And he took all the land,quæ ditionis illius fuerat usque Arnon.which had been under his sovereignty, as far as Arnon.
Idcirco dicitur in proverbio:About this,Venite in Hesebon:it is said in the proverb:ædificetur,“Enter into Heshbon.et construatur civitas Sehon:Let the city of Sihon be established and built.
ignis egressus est de Hesebon,A fire has gone forth from Heshbon, flamma de oppido Sehon,a flame from the town of Sihon,et devoravit Ar Moabitarum, and it has devoured Ar of the Moabites,et habitatores excelsorum Arnon.and the inhabitants of the heights of Arnon.
Væ tibi Moab;Woe to you, Moab!peristi popule Chamos. You are perishing, O people of Chemosh.Dedit filios ejus in fugam,He gave flight to his sons,et filias in captivitatem regi Amorrhæorum Sehon.and he gave the daughters into captivity, to the king of the Amorites, Sihon.
Jugum ipsorum disperiit ad Hesebon usque Dibon:Their yoke has been scattered from Heshbon even to Dibon.lassi pervenerunt in Nophe,They have passed through, wearily, into Nophah,et usque Medaba.and as far as Medeba.”
Habitavit itaque Israël in terra Amorrhæi.And so Israel lived in the land of the Amorite.
Misitque Moyses qui explorarent Jazer:And Moses sent some to explore Jazer.cujus ceperunt viculos,These captured its villageset possederunt habitatores.and possessed its inhabitants.
Verteruntque se,And they turned themselves and ascended,et ascenderunt per viam Basan, along the way of Bashan.et occurrit eis Og,And Og,rex Basan, the king of Bashan, cum omni populo suo,met them with all his people, pugnaturus in Edrai.to fight at Edrei.
Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen: Ne timeas eum,And the Lord said to Moses: “Do not be afraid of him.quia in manu tua tradidi illum,For I have delivered him, and all his people,et omnem populum ac terram ejus:as well as his land, into your hand.faciesque illi sicut fecisti Sehon,And you shall do to him just as you did to Sihon, regi Amorrhæorum habitatori Hesebon.the king of the Amorites, the inhabitant of Heshbon.”
Percusserunt igitur et hunc cum filiis suis,Therefore, they struck him down also, with his sons, universumque populum ejus usque ad internecionem, and all his people, even to utter destruction,et possederunt terram illius.and they possessed his land.
