Morabatur autem eo tempore Israël in Settim,Now Israel, at that time, dwelt in Shittim,et fornicatus est populus cum filiabus Moab, and the people were fornicating with the daughters of Moab,
quæ vocaverunt eos ad sacrificia sua.who called them to their sacrifices. At ille comederuntAnd they ate,et adoraverunt deos earum.and they adored their gods.
Initiatusque est Israël Beelphegor:And Israel was initiated into Baal of Peor.et iratus Dominus,And so the Lord, being angry,
ait ad Moysen:said to Moses,Tolle cunctos principes populi,“Take all the leaders of the people,et suspende eos contra solem in patibulis, and hang them on gallows against the sun,ut avertatur furor meus ab Israël.so that my fury may be averted from Israel.”
Dixitque Moyses ad judices Israël:And Moses said to the judges of Israel,Occidat unusquisque proximos suos,“Let each one kill his neighbors, qui initiati sunt Beelphegor.who have been initiated into Baal of Peor.”
Et ecce unus de filiis Israël intravit coram fratribus suis ad scortum Madianitidem,And behold, one of the sons of Israel entered, in the sight of his brothers, vidente Moyse, et omni turba filiorum Israël,to a prostitute of Midian, within view of Moses and of all the crowd of the sons of Israel, qui flebant ante fores tabernaculi.who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle.
Quod cum vidisset Phinees filius Eleazari filii Aaron sacerdotis,And when Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, had seen it,surrexit de medio multitudinis,he rose up from the midst of the multitude,et arrepto pugione, and, seizing a dagger,
ingressus est post virum Israëlitem in lupanar,he entered after the Israelite man, into the brothel,et perfodit ambos simul, and he pierced both of them at the same time, virum scilicet et mulierem in locis genitalibus.specifically, the man and the woman at the location of their genitals.Cessavitque plaga a filiis Israël:And the scourge ceased from among the sons of Israel.
et occisi sunt viginti quatuor millia hominum. And there were slain twenty-four thousand men.
Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen:And the Lord said to Moses:
Phinees filius Eleazari filii Aaron sacerdotis avertit iram meam a filiis Israël:“Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has averted my wrath from the sons of Israel.quia zelo meo commotus est contra eos,For he was moved against them by my zeal, so that I myself,ut non ipse delerem filios Israël in zelo meo.in my zeal, might not wipe away the sons of Israel.
Idcirco loquere ad eum:Because of this, say to him: Behold,Ecce do ei pacem fœderis mei,I give to him the peace of my covenant.
et erit tam ipsi quam semini ejus pactum sacerdotii sempiternum:And the covenant of the everlasting priesthood shall be as much for him as for his offspring.quia zelatus est pro Deo suo,For he was zealous on behalf of his God,et expiavit scelus filiorum Israël.and he has made expiation for the wickedness of the sons of Israel.”
Erat autem nomen viri Israëlitæ,Now the name of the Israelite man,qui occisus est cum Madianitide, who was killed with the Midianite woman,Zambri filius Salu, was Zimri the son of Salu, dux de cognatione et tribu Simeonis.a leader from the kinship and tribe of Simeon.
Porro mulier Madianitis,Moreover, the Midianite woman,quæ pariter interfecta est,who was put to death together with him, vocabatur Cozbi filia Sur principis nobilissimi Madianitarum.was called Cozbi the daughter of Zur, a most noble leader among the Midianites.
Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen,And the Lord spoke to Moses, dicens:saying:
Hostes vos sentiant Madianitæ,“Let the Midianites perceive you as enemies,et percutite eos:and strike them down,
quia et ipsi hostiliter egerunt contra vos,for they, too, have behaved with hostility against you,et decepere insidiis per idolum Phogor, and they have deceived you insidiously by means of the idol Peor,et Cozbi filiam ducis Madian sororem suam, and by Cozbi, the daughter of a commander of Midian, their sister,quæ percussa est in die plagæ pro sacrilegio Phogor.who was struck down in the day of the scourge because of the sacrilege of Peor.”
