Hæc quoque locutus est Dominus ad Moysen in campestribus Moab supra Jordanem,And the Lord also spoke these things to Moses in the plains of Moab, above the Jordan, contra Jericho:opposite Jericho:
Præcipe filiis Israël ut dent Levitis de possessionibus suis“Instruct the sons of Israel, so that they may give to the Levites, from their possessions,
urbes ad habitandum, cities as dwelling places,et suburbana earum per circuitum:with their surrounding suburbs,ut ipsi in oppidis maneant,so that they may lodge in the towns,et suburbana sint pecoribus ac jumentis:and so that the suburbs may be for cattle and beasts of burden.
quæ a muris civitatum forinsecus,The suburbs shall extend from the outer walls of the cities, per circuitum, all around, mille passuum spatio tendentur.for the space of one thousand steps.
Contra orientem duo millia erunt cubiti,Facing the east, there shall be two thousand cubits,et contra meridiem similiter erunt duo millia:and facing the south, similarly, there shall be two thousand cubits.ad mare quoque,Toward the sea, also, quod respicit ad occidentem, eadem mensura erit, which looks out toward the west, there shall be the same measure,et septentrionalis plaga æquali termino finietur, and the northern region shall be bounded by equal limits.eruntque urbes in medio,And the cities shall be in the center,et foris suburbana.and the suburbs shall be outside.
De ipsis autem oppidis, quæ Levitis dabitis,Now, from the towns which you shall give to the Levites, sex erunt in fugitivorum auxilia separata, six shall be separated for the assistance of fugitives,ut fugiat ad ea qui fuderit sanguinem:so that he who has shed blood may flee to them.et exceptis his,And, aside from these, alia quadraginta duo oppida, there shall be forty-two other towns,
id est, that is,simul quadraginta octo cum suburbanis suis.all together forty-eight with their suburbs.
Ipsæque urbes,And concerning these cities,quæ dabuntur de possessionibus filiorum Israël,which shall be given from the possessions of the sons of Israel:ab his qui plus habent, from those who have more, plures auferentur:more shall be taken,et qui minus, and from those who have less, pauciores:less shall be taken.singuli juxta mensuram hæreditatis suæ dabunt oppida Levitis. Each shall give towns to the Levites according to the measure of their inheritance.”
Ait Dominus ad Moysen:The Lord said to Moses:
Loquere filiis Israël,“Speak to the sons of Israel,et dices ad eos:and you shall say to them:Quando transgressi fueritis Jordanem in terram Chanaan,When you will have crossed the Jordan into the land of Canaan,
decernite quæ urbes esse debeant in præsidia fugitivorum, qui nolentes sanguinem fuderint:discern which cities ought to be for the protection of fugitives who have shed blood unwillingly.
in quibus cum fuerit profugus,And when a fugitive is in these, cognatus occisi non poterit eum occidere, the kinsman of the deceased shall not be able to kill him, donec stet in conspectu multitudinis, until he stands in the sight of the multitudeet causa illius judicetur.and his case is judged.
De ipsis autem urbibus,Then,quæ ad fugitivorum subsidia separantur, among those cities which are separated for relief to fugitives,
tres erunt trans Jordanem, three shall be across the Jordan,et tres in terra Chanaan, and three in the land of Canaan,
tam filiis Israël quam advenis atque peregrinis,as much for the sons of Israel as for newcomers and sojourners,ut confugiat ad eas qui nolens sanguinem fuderit.so that anyone who has shed blood unwillingly may flee to these places.
Si quis ferro percusserit,If anyone will have struck someone with iron,et mortuus fuerit qui percussus est,and he who was struck will have died, reus erit homicidii, then he shall be guilty of homicide,et ipse morietur.and he himself shall die.
Si lapidem jecerit,If he will have thrown a stone,et ictus occubuerit, and he who has been struck lies dead, similiter punietur.then he shall be punished similarly.
Si ligno percussus interierit,If he who has been struck with wood passes away, percussoris sanguine vindicabitur.he shall be avenged by the blood of the one who struck him.
Propinquus occisi, homicidam interficiet:The close relative of the deceased shall put to death the murderer;statim ut apprehenderit eum, interficiet.as soon as he apprehends him, he shall put him to death.
Si per odium quis hominem impulerit,If, out of hatred, anyone assaults a man,vel jecerit quippiam in eum per insidias:or throws anything at him with ill intent,
aut cum esset inimicus,or, while being his enemy, manu percusserit, et ille mortuus fuerit:strikes him with his hand, and so he has died, percussor homicidii reus erit:the attacker shall be guilty of murder.cognatus occisi statim ut invenerit eum,The kinsman of the deceased, as soon as he finds him, jugulabit.shall cut his throat.
Quod si fortuitu,But if by chance,et absque odioand without hatred
et inimicitiis quidquam horum fecerit,or animosity, he will have done any of these things,
et hoc audiente populo fuerit comprobatum, and this has been proven in the hearing of the people, atque inter percussoremand the questions have been aired,et propinquum sanguinis quæstio ventilata:between the one who struck and the close relative,
liberabitur innocens de ultoris manu, then the innocent one shall be freed from the hand of the revenger,et reducetur per sententiam in urbem, ad quam confugerat, and he shall be returned by this judgment into the city to which he had fled, manebitque ibi, donec sacerdos magnus, and he shall stay there until the high priest, qui oleo sancto unctus est, moriatur.who has been anointed with the holy oil, dies.
Si interfector extra fines urbium, quæ exulibus deputatæ sunt,If the one who has killed has been found beyond the limits of the cities which have been assigned to the exiled,
fuerit inventus, et percussus ab eo qui ultor est sanguinis:and he has been struck by him who is avenging blood, absque noxa erit qui eum occiderit.he who killed him shall not be harmed.
Debuerat enim profugus usque ad mortem pontificis in urbe residere. For the fugitive ought to have resided in the city, until the death of the high priest. Then,Postquam autem ille obierit, homicida revertetur in terram suam.after he is dead, the one who has killed shall be returned to his own land.
Hæc sempiterna erunt, et legitima in cunctis habitationibus vestris. These things shall be a perpetual ordinance in all your habitations.
Homicida sub testibus punietur:The punishment of a murderer shall be based upon testimony;ad unius testimonium nullus condemnabitur.but no one shall be condemned upon the testimony of only one person.
Non accipietis pretium ab eo qui reus est sanguinis,You shall not accept money from him who is guilty of blood, statim et ipse morietur.and he shall be put to death promptly.
Exules et profugi ante mortem pontificis nullo modo in urbes suas reverti poterunt,Exiles and fugitives, prior to the death of the high priest, are by no means able to be returned to their own cities.
ne polluatis terram habitationis vestræ,Do not pollute the land of your habitation,quæ insontium cruore maculatur:so as to stain it with the blood of the innocent;nec aliter expiari potest, nisi per ejus sanguinem, qui alterius sanguinem fuderit.neither is it able to be expiated in any way other than by the blood of him who has shed the blood of another.
Atque ita emundabitur vestra possessio me commorante vobiscum. And so shall your possession be cleansed, while I myself am abiding with you.Ego enim sum Dominus qui habito inter filios Israël.For I am the Lord, who lives among the sons of Israel.”
