Accidit autem ut moreretur Naas rex filiorum Ammon,Now it happened that Nahash, the king of the sons of Ammon,et regnaret filius ejus pro eo.died, and his son reigned in his place.

Dixitque David:And David said:Faciam misericordiam cum Hanon filio Naas:“I will act with mercy toward Hanun, the son of Nahash.præstitit enim mihi pater ejus gratiam. For his father was gracious to me.”Misitque David nuntios ad consolandum eum super morte patris sui.And so David sent messengers to console him over the death of his father.Qui cum pervenissent in terram filiorum Ammon ut consolarentur Hanon,But when they had reached the land of the sons of Ammon, so that they might console Hanun,

dixerunt principes filiorum Ammon ad Hanon:the leaders of the sons of Ammon said to Hanun:Tu forsitan putas, quod David honoris causa in patrem tuum miserit qui consolentur te:“Do you think that perhaps David has sent them to console you in order to honor your father?nec animadvertis quod ut explorent, et investigent, et scrutentur terram tuam,Have you not noticed that his servants came to you so that they might explore, venerint ad te servi ejus.and investigate, and examine your land?”

Igitur Hanon pueros David decalvavit,And so Hanun shaved the headset rasit, and beards of the servants of David,et præcidit tunicas eorum a natibus usque ad pedes, and he cut away their tunics from the buttocks to the feet,et dimisit eos.and he sent them away.

Qui cum abiissent,And when they had gone,et hoc mandassent David, and had sent word to David, misit in occursum eorum (grandem enim contumeliam sustinuerant)(for they had suffered a great disgrace,)et præcepit ut manerent in Jericho,he sent to meet them, donec cresceret barba eorum, and he instructed them that they should remain at Jericho until their beards grew,et tunc reverterentur.and then they should return.

Videntes autem filii Ammon quod injuriam fecissent David,Then, tam Hanon quam reliquus populus, when the sons of Ammon realized that they had committed an injury against David, miserunt mille talenta argenti, both Hanun and the rest of the people sent one thousand talents of silver,ut conducerent sibi de Mesopotamia,so that they might hire for themselves chariots and horsemen from Mesopotamia,et de Syria Maacha, and from Syrian Maacah,et de Soba currus et equites.and from Zobah.

Conduxeruntque triginta duo millia curruum,And they hired thirty-two thousand chariots,et regem Maacha cum populo ejus.and the king of Maacah with his people.Qui cum venissent,When these had arrived, castrametati sunt e regione Medaba.they made camp in the region opposite Medeba. Also,Filii quoque Ammon congregati de urbibus suis venerunt ad bellum.the sons of Ammon, gathering from their cities, went to war.

Quod cum audisset David,And when David had heard this, misit Joab,he sent Joabet omnem exercitum virorum fortium:and the entire army of strong men.

egressique filii Ammon,And the sons of Ammon, direxerunt aciem juxta portam civitatis; reges autem, going out, set up a battle line before the gate of the city.qui ad auxilium ejus venerant, separatim in agro steterunt. But the kings who had come to their aid stood separately in the field.

Igitur Joab,And so Joab, intelligens bellum ex adverso et post tergum contra se fieri, understanding the war to be set facing him and behind his back, elegit viros fortissimos de universo Israël,chose the strongest men from all of Israel,et perrexit contra Syrum.and he went out against the Syrians.

Reliquam autem partem populi dedit sub manu Abisai fratris sui:But the remaining portion of the people he placed under the hand of his brother Abishai.et perrexerunt contra filios Ammon. And they went out against the sons of Ammon.

Dixitque:And he said:Si vicerit me Syrus,“If the Syrians prevail over me,auxilio eris mihi:then you shall be a help to me.si autem superaverint te filii Ammon,But if the sons of Ammon prevail over you,ero tibi in præsidium.I will be a safeguard for you.

Confortare,Be strengthened,et agamus viriliter pro populo nostro, and let us act manfully on behalf of our people,et pro urbibus Dei nostri: Dominus autem, and on behalf of the cities of our God.quod in conspectu suo bonum est, faciet. And the Lord will do what is good in his own sight.”

Perrexit ergo Joab et populus qui cum eo erat,Therefore, Joab, and the people who were with him, contra Syrum ad prælium:went out to battle against the Syrians.et fugavit eos.And he put them to flight.

Porro filii Ammon videntes quod fugisset Syrus,Then the sons of Ammon, seeing that the Syrians had fled, ipsi quoque fugerunt Abisai fratrem ejus, also themselves fled from Abishai, his brother,et ingressi sunt civitatem:and they entered into the city.reversusque est etiam Joab in Jerusalem. And now Joab returned to Jerusalem.

Videns autem Syrus quod cecidisset coram Israël,But the Syrians, seeing that they had fallen before Israel, misit nuntios, sent messengers,et adduxit Syrum, qui erat trans fluvium:and they brought the Syrians who were across the river.Sophach autem princeps militiæ Adarezer erat dux eorum. And Shophach, the leader of the military of Hadadezer, was their commander.

Quod cum nuntiatum esset David,When this had been reported to David, congregavit universum Israël,he gathered together all of Israel,et transivit Jordanem, and he crossed the Jordan.irruitque in eosAnd he rushed toward them.et direxit ex adverso aciem,And he set up a battle line facing them.illis contra pugnantibus. And they fought against him.

Fugit autem Syrus Israël,But the Syrians fled from Israel.et interfecit David de Syris septem millia curruum,And David killed of the Syrians seven thousand chariots,et quadraginta millia peditum, and forty thousand men on foot,et Sophach exercitus principem.and Shophach, the leader of the army.

Videntes autem servi Adarezer se ab Israël esse superatos,Then the servants of Hadadezer, seeing themselves to be overwhelmed by Israel, transfugerunt ad David, crossed over to David,et servierunt ei:and they served him.noluitque ultra Syria auxilium præbere filiis Ammon. And Syria was no longer willing to offer aid to the sons of Ammon.
