Reversus est autem Josaphat rex Juda in domum suam pacifice in Jerusalem. Then Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, returned in peace to his house in Jerusalem.
Cui occurrit Jehu filius Henani videns,And the seer Jehu, the son of Hanani, met him,et ait ad eum:and said to him:Impio præbes auxilium,“You offer assistance to the impious,et his qui oderunt Dominum amicitia jungeris, and you are joined in friendship with those who hate the Lord.et idcirco iram quidem Domini merebaris:And for this reason, you certainly deserve the wrath of the Lord.
sed bona opera inventa sunt in te,But good works have been found in you.eo quod abstuleris lucos de terra Juda,For you have taken away the sacred groves from the land of Judah.et præparaveris cor tuum ut requireres Dominum Deum patrum tuorum. And you have prepared your heart, so as to seek the Lord, the God of your fathers.”
Habitavit ergo Josaphat in Jerusalem,Then Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem.rursumque egressus est ad populum de Bersabee usque ad montem Ephraim,And again he went out to the people, from Beersheba as far as mount Ephraim.et revocavit eos ad Dominum Deum patrum suorum. And he called them back to the Lord, the God of their fathers.
Constituitque judices terræ in cunctis civitatibus Juda munitis per singula loca,And he appointed judges of the land, in all the fortified cities of Judah, in each place.
et præcipiens judicibus:And instructing the judges,Videte,he said:ait,“Pay attention to what you are doing.quid faciatis:For you exercise judgment, non enim hominis exercetis judicium, not of man,sed Domini:but of the Lord.et quodcumque judicaveritis,And whatever you will have judged,in vos redundabit.it will come back to you.
Sit timor Domini vobiscum,Let the fear of the Lord be with you,et cum diligentia cuncta facite:and do all things with diligence.non est enim apud Dominum Deum nostrum iniquitas,For there is no iniquity with the Lord our God,nec personarum acceptio, nor respect of persons, nec cupido munerum.nor desire for gifts.”
In Jerusalem quoque constituit Josaphat Levitas,Jehoshaphat also appointed Levites and priests and leaders of families,et sacerdotes, out of Israel,et principes familiarum ex Israël,in Jerusalem,ut judicium et causam Domini judicarent habitatoribus ejus.so that they might judge the judgment and purpose of the Lord for its inhabitants.
Præcepitque eis, dicens: Sic agetis in timore Domini fideliter et corde perfecto. And he instructed them, saying, “So shall you act: faithfully, in the fear of the Lord, and with a perfect heart.
Omnem causam quæ venerit ad vos fratrum vestrorum,Every case that will come to you from your brothers, qui habitant in urbibus suis inter cognationem et cognationem, who live in their cities, between kindred and kindred, ubicumque quæstio est de lege, de mandato, wherever there is a question concerning law,de cæremoniis, commandment,de justificationibus:ceremonies, or justifications, ostendite eis, reveal it to them,ut non peccent in Dominum,so that they may not sin against the Lord,et ne veniat ira super vos et super fratres vestros:and so that wrath may not overwhelm you and your brothers. Then, sic ergo agentes non peccabitis.by acting in this way, you will not sin.
Amarias autem sacerdosBut Amariah,et pontifex vester in his quæ ad Deum pertinent,a priest and your high priest,præsidebit:shall preside over those things which pertain to God.porro Zabadias filius Ismahel,Then Zebadiah, qui est dux in domo Juda, the son of Ishmael, super ea opera erit quæ ad regis officium pertinent:who is a ruler in the house of Judah, habetisque magistros Levitas coram vobis.shall be over those works that pertain to the office of the king.Confortamini,And you have before you the Levites as teachers.et agite diligenter,Be strengthened and act diligently,et erit Dominus vobiscum in bonis.and the Lord will be with you for what is good.”
