Post hæc congregati sunt filii MoabAfter these things,et filii Ammon, the sons of Moab,et cum eis de Ammonitis, and the sons of Ammon,ad Josaphat, and with them some from the Ammonites,ut pugnarent contra eum.gathered together so that they might fight against him.
Veneruntque nuntii, et indicaverunt Josaphat,And messengers arrived and reported to Jehoshaphat, saying:dicentes: Venit contra te multitudo magna de his locis quæ trans mare sunt,“A great multitude has arrived against you, from those places that are across the sea,et de Syria:and from Syria.et ecce consistunt in Asasonthamar,And behold, they are standing together at Hazazon-tamar,quæ est Engaddi.which is Engedi.”
Josaphat autem timore perterritus,Then Jehoshaphat, being terrified with fear, totum se contulit ad rogandum Dominum, gave himself entirely to petitioning the Lord,et prædicavit jejunium universo Juda.and he proclaimed a fast for all of Judah.
Congregatusque est Judas ad deprecandum Dominum:And Judah gathered together to pray to the Lord.sedMoreover,et omnes de urbibus suis venerunt ad obsecrandum eum.everyone from their cities came to beseech him.
Cumque stetisset Josaphat in medio cœtu JudaAnd when Jehoshaphat had stood up in the midst of the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem,et Jerusalem,in the house of the Lord,in domo Domini ante atrium novum, before the new atrium,
ait:he said:Domine Deus patrum nostrorum,“O Lord,tu es Deus in cælo,God of our fathers,et dominaris cunctis regnis gentium:you are God in heaven,in manu tua est fortitudoand you rule over all the kingdoms of the Gentiles.et potentia,In your hand is strength and power, nec quisquam tibi potest resistere.and no one is able to withstand you.
Nonne tu, Deus noster,Did not you, our God,interfecisti omnes habitatores terræ hujus coram populo tuo Israël,put to death all the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel?et dedisti eam semini Abraham amici tui in sempiternum? And you gave it to the offspring of your friend Abraham, for all time.
Habitaveruntque in ea,And they lived in it.et exstruxerunt in illa sanctuarium nomini tuo,And they built a Sanctuary to your name in it,dicentes:saying:
Si irruerint super nos mala,‘If evils will have fallen upon us,gladius judicii, the sword of judgment, pestilentia,or pestilence,et fames,or famine, stabimus coram domo hac in conspectu tuo,we will stand in your sight before this house,in qua invocatum est nomen tuum:in which your name is invoked,et clamabimus ad te in tribulationibus nostris, and we will cry out to you in our tribulations.et exaudies,And you will heed ussalvosque facies.and accomplish our salvation.’
Nunc igitur,Now therefore, ecce filii Ammon, behold the sons of Ammon,et Moab, and of Moab,et mons Seir, and mount Seir, per quos non concessisti Israël ut transirent quando egrediebantur de Ægypto, through whose lands you did not permit Israel to cross when they were departing from Egypt. Instead, sed declinaverunt ab eis, they turned aside from them,et non interfecerunt illos, and they did not put them to death.
e contrario agunt,They are doing the contrary,et nituntur ejicere nos de possessione quam tradidisti nobis.and they are striving to cast us from the possession which you delivered to us.
Deus noster,Therefore, will you, ergo non judicabis eos?our God, not judge them?in nobis quidem non est tanta fortitudo, ut possimus huic multitudini resistere,Certainly, in us there is not enough strength so that we would be able to withstand this multitude,quæ irruit super nos.which rushes against us.Sed cum ignoremus quid agere debeamus,But although we do not know what we ought to do,hoc solum habemus residui,we have this alone remaining,ut oculos nostros dirigamus ad te.that we direct our eyes to you.”
Omnis vero Juda stabat coram Domino cum parvulis, et uxoribus, et liberis suis.Truly, all of Judah was standing before the Lord with their little ones and wives and children.
Erat autem Jahaziel filius Zachariæ filii Banaiæ filii Jehiel filii Mathaniæ,But there was Jahaziel, the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah,Levites de filiis Asaph, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, super quem factus est spiritus Domini,a Levite from the sons of Asaph, upon whom the Spirit of the Lord went,in medio turbæ,in the midst of the crowd.
et ait:And he said:Attendite,“Pay attention, omnis Juda, all of Judah,et qui habitatis Jerusalem, and you who live in Jerusalem,et tu,and you,rex Josaphat:king Jehoshaphat.hæc dicit Dominus vobis:Thus says the Lord to you:Nolite timere,Do not be afraid.nec paveatis hanc multitudinem:Neither should you be dismayed by this multitude.non est enim vestra pugna,For the fight is not yours, sed Dei.but God’s.
Cras descendetis contra eos:Tomorrow, you shall descend against them.ascensuri enim sunt per clivum nomine Sis,For they will ascend along the incline named Ziz,et invenietis illos in summitate torrentis qui est contra solitudinem Jeruel.and will find them at the summit of the torrent, which is opposite the wilderness of Jeruel.
Non eritis vos qui dimicabitis,It will not be you who will fight.sed tantummodo confidenter state,Instead,et videbitis auxilium Domini super vos, only stand with confidence,o Judaand you will see the help of the Lord over you,et Jerusalem:O Judah and Jerusalem.nolite timere,Do not be afraid.nec paveatis:Neither should you be dismayed.cras egrediemini contra eos,Tomorrow you shall go forth against them,et Dominus erit vobiscum.and the Lord will be with you.”
Josaphat ergo,Then Jehoshaphat,et Juda, and Judah,et omnes habitatores Jerusalem ceciderunt proni in terram coram Domino, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell prone on the ground before the Lord,et adoraverunt eum.and they adored him.
Porro Levitæ de filiis Caath et de filiis Core laudabant Dominum Deum Israël voce magna in excelsum. And the Levites from the sons of Kohath, and from the sons of Korah, were praising the Lord, the God of Israel, with a great voice, on high.
Cumque mane surrexissent,And when they had risen up in the morning, egressi sunt per desertum Thecue:they went out through the desert of Tekoa.profectisque eis,And as they were setting out, stans Josaphat in medio eorum,Jehoshaphat, dixit:standing in their midst,Audite me,said:viri Juda,“Listen to me,et omnes habitatores Jerusalem:men of Judah and all inhabitants of Jerusalem.credite in Domino Deo vestro,Believe in the Lord your God,et securi eritis:and you will be secure.credite prophetis ejus,Believe in his prophets,et cuncta evenient prospera.and everything will come to prosperity.”
Deditque consilium populo,And he gave counsel to the people.et statuit cantores Domini ut laudarent eum in turmis suis, et antecederent exercitum,And he appointed the singing men of the Lord, so that they would praise him by their companies,ac voce consona dicerent:and so that they would go before the army,Confitemini Domino quoniam in æternum misericordia ejus.and with one voice say: “Confess to the Lord. For his mercy is eternal.”
Cumque cœpissent laudes canere,And when they had begun to sing praises, vertit Dominus insidias eorum in semetipsos, the Lord turned their ambushes upon themselves, that is,filiorum scilicet Ammon, those of the sons of Ammon,et Moab, and of Moab,et montis Seir, and of mount Seir, qui egressi fuerant ut pugnarent contra Judam:who had gone forth so that they might fight against Judah.et percussi sunt. And they were struck down.
Namque filii Ammon et Moab consurrexerunt adversum habitatores montis Seir,For the sons of Ammon and of Moab rose up against the inhabitants of mount Seir,ut interficerent et delerent eos:so that they might slay and destroy them.cumque hoc opere perpetrassent,And when they had perpetrated this work, etiam in semetipsos versi, now also turning upon themselves, mutuis concidere vulneribus.they cut one another with wounds.
Porro Juda, cum venisset ad speculam quæ respicit solitudinem,Then, when Judah had gone to the high point that looks out toward the desert, vidit procul omnem late regionem plenam cadaveribus, they saw, from far away, the entire wide region filled with dead bodies.nec superesse quemquam qui necem potuisset evadere.Neither was there anyone who was left alive and had been able to escape death.
Venit ergo Josaphat,Therefore, Jehoshaphat went,et omnis populus cum eo,and all the people with him,ad detrahenda spolia mortuorum:in order to take away the spoils of the dead.inveneruntque inter cadavera variam supellectilem,And they found, among the dead bodies, diverse equipment, vestes quoque, and also garments,et vasa pretiosissima, and very precious vessels. And they despoiled these,et diripuerunt ita ut omnia portare non possent,to such an extent that they were unable to carry everything. Neither could they, nec per tres dies spolia auferre præ prædæ magnitudine.over three days, take away the spoils because of the magnitude of the plunder.
Die autem quarto congregati sunt in Valle benedictionis:Then, on the fourth day, they were gathered together in the Valley of Blessing.etenim quoniam ibi benedixerant Domino,For they had blessed the Lord there, vocaverunt locum illum Vallis benedictionis usque in præsentem diem.and therefore they called that place the Valley of Blessing, even to the present day.
Reversusque est omnis vir Juda,And every man of Judah,et habitatores Jerusalem, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, returned,et Josaphat ante eos, with Jehoshaphat before them,in Jerusalem cum lætitia magna,to Jerusalem, with great rejoicing.eo quod dedisset eis Dominus gaudium de inimicis suis. For the Lord had granted to them gladness concerning their enemies.
Ingressique sunt in Jerusalem cum psalteriis,And they entered into Jerusalem with psalteries, and harps,et citharis, and trumpets,et tubis in domum Domini.into the house of the Lord.
Irruit autem pavor Domini super universa regna terrarum cum audissent quod pugnasset Dominus contra inimicos Israël.Then the fear of the Lord fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands, when they had heard that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel.
Quievitque regnum Josaphat,And the kingdom of Jehoshaphat was quiet.et præbuit ei Deus pacem per circuitum. And God granted to him peace on all sides.
Regnavit igitur Josaphat super Judam,And so Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah.et erat triginta quinque annorum cum regnare cœpisset:And he was thirty-five years old when he had begun to reign.viginti autemThen he reigned for twenty-five years in Jerusalem.et quinque annis regnavit in Jerusalem,And the name of his mother was Azubah,et nomen matris ejus Azuba filia Selahi.the daughter of Shilhi.
Et ambulavit in via patris suis Asa,And he walked in the way of his father, Asa,nec declinavit ab ea,and he did not decline from it,faciens quæ placita erant coram Domino.doing the things that were pleasing before the Lord.
Verumtamen excelsa non abstulit,Yet truly, he did not take away the high places,et adhuc populus non direxerat cor suum ad Dominum Deum patrum suorum.and the people still had not directed their heart to the Lord, the God of their fathers.
Reliqua autem gestorum Josaphat priorum et novissimorum scripta sunt in verbis Jehu filii Hanani, quæ digessit in libros regum Israël.But the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, the first and the last, have been written in the words of Jehu, the son of Hanani, which he digested into the books of the kings of Israel.
Post hæc iniit amicitias Josaphat rex Juda cum Ochozia rege Israël, cujus opera fuerunt impiissima. After these things, Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, formed a friendship with Ahaziah, the king of Israel, whose works were very impious.
Et particeps fuit ut facerent naves quæ irent in Tharsis:And he was a partner in the making of ships, which would go to Tarshish.feceruntque classem in Asiongaber. And they made the fleet at Eziongeber.
Prophetavit autem Eliezer filius Dodau de Maresa ad Josaphat,Then Eliezer, the son of Dodavahu, from Mareshah, dicens:prophesied to Jehoshaphat,Quia habuisti fœdus cum Ochozia, saying: “Because you have made a pact with Ahaziah, percussit Dominus opera tua,the Lord has struck your works, contritæque sunt naves, and the ships have been broken, nec potuerunt ire in Tharsis.and they have not been able to go to Tarshish.”
