Decrevit autem Salomon ædificare domum nomini Domini,And Solomon resolved to build a house to the name of the Lord,et palatium sibi.and a palace for himself.

Et numeravit septuaginta millia virorum portantium humeris,And he numbered seventy thousand men to carry upon shoulders,et octoginta millia qui cæderent lapides in montibus, and eighty thousand who were hewing stones in the mountains,præpositosque eorum tria millia sexcentos.and three thousand six hundred as their overseers.

Misit quoque ad Hiram regem Tyri,Also, he sent to Hiram, the king of Tyre, dicens:saying:Sicut egisti cum David patre meo,“Just as you did for my father David,et misisti ei ligna cedrina ut ædificaret sibi domum, when you sent him cedar wood, so that he might build a house for himself,in qua et habitavit:in which he then lived,

sic fac mecum ut ædificem domum nomini Domini Dei mei,do so also for me, so that I may build a house to the name of the Lord my God,ut consecrem eam ad adolendum incensum coram illo,so that I may consecrate it for the burning of incense before him,et fumiganda aromata, and for the smoke of aromatics,et ad propositionem panum sempiternam, and for the perpetual bread of the presence,et ad holocautomata mane, and for the holocausts,et vespere, sabbatis quoque,in morning and in evening,et neomeniis, et solemnitatibus Domini Dei nostri in sempiternum,as well as on the Sabbaths and new moons and solemnities of the Lord our God forever,quæ mandata sunt Israëli.which have been commanded to Israel.

Domus enim quam ædificare cupio,For the house that I desire to build is great.magna est:For our God is great, magnus est enim Deus noster super omnes deos.above all gods.

Quis ergo poterit prævalere,So then, who will be able prevail,ut ædificet ei dignam domum? si cælum,so that he may build a worthy house for him?et cæli cælorum, capere eum nequeunt,If heaven and the heavens of heavens cannot contain him, quantus ego sum, ut possim ædificare ei domum?what am I that I would be able to build a house to him?sed ad hoc tantum,But let it be for this only,ut adoleatur incensum coram illo.so that incense may be burned before him.

Mitte ergo mihi virum eruditum,Therefore, send to me a learned man,qui noverit operari in auro, et argento, who knows how to work with gold and silver,ære, et ferro, with brass and iron, purpura, with purple, coccino, scarlet,et hyacintho:and hyacinth,et qui sciat sculpere cælaturas cum his artificibus quos mecum habeo in Judæa, et Jerusalem, and who knows how to carve engravings, along with these artisans that I have with me in Judea and Jerusalem, quos præparavit David pater meus.whom my father David has prepared.

SedThen too,et ligna cedrina mitte mihi, send to me cedar wood,et arceuthina, and juniper,et pinea de Libano:and pine from Lebanon.scio enim quod servi tui noverint cædere ligna de Libano:For I know that your servants know how to cut timber from Lebanon,et erunt servi mei cum servis tuis, and my servants will be with your servants,

ut parentur mihi ligna plurima.so that very much wood may be prepared for me.Domus enim quam cupio ædificare, magna est nimis, et inclyta. For the house that I desire to build is exceedingly great and glorious.

Præterea operariis qui cæsuri sunt ligna,In addition, I will give to your servants, the workers who will cut down the trees, servis tuis, for provisions:dabo in cibaria tritici coros viginti millia, et hordei coros totidem, twenty thousand cor of wheat, and the same number of cor of barley,et vini viginti millia metretas, and twenty thousand measures of wine, olei quoque sata viginti millia.as well as twenty thousand good measures of oil.”

Dixit autem Hiram rex Tyri per litteras quas miserat Salomoni: Quia dilexit Dominus populum suum, idcirco te regnare fecit super eum. Then Hiram, the king of Tyre, said, by a letter that had been sent to Solomon: “Because the Lord loved his people, for this reason he appointed you to reign over them.”

Et addidit,And he added, dicens:saying:Benedictus Dominus Deus Israël,“Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, qui fecit cælum et terram:who made heaven and earth, qui dedit David regi filium sapientem et eruditum et sensatum atque prudentem, who gave to king David a son who is wise, and learned, and intelligent as well as prudent,ut ædificaret domum Domino,so that he may build a house to the Lord,et palatium sibi.and a palace for himself.

Misi ergo tibi virum prudentem et scientissimum Hiram patrem meum,Therefore, I have sent my father Hiram to you; he is a prudent and very knowledgeable man,

filium mulieris de filiabus Dan,the son of a woman from the daughters of Dan,cujus pater fuit Tyrius, whose father was a Tyrian, qui novit operari in auro, et argento, who knows how to work with gold and silver,ære, et ferro, with brass and iron,et marmore, et lignis, and with marble and timber,in purpura quoque,as well as with purple,et hyacintho, et bysso, and hyacinth, and fine linen,et coccino:and scarlet.et qui scit cælare omnem sculpturam,And he knows how to carve every kind of engraving,et adinvenire prudenter quodcumque in opere necessarium est cum artificibus tuis, and how to devise prudently whatever may be necessary to the work,et cum artificibus domini mei David patris tui.with your artisans and with the artisans of my lord David, your father.

Triticum ergo,Therefore,et hordeum, et oleum, et vinum, send the wheat and barley and oil and wine,quæ pollicitus es,which you, my lord, domine mi,have promised, mitte servis tuis.to your own servants.

Nos autem cædemus ligna de Libano, quot necessaria habueris,Then we will cut down as much wood from Lebanon as you will need,et applicabimus ea ratibus per mare in Joppe:and we will convey them as rafts by sea to Joppa.tuum autem erit transferre ea in Jerusalem. Then it will be for you to transfer them to Jerusalem.”

Numeravit igitur Salomon omnes viros proselytos qui erant in terra Israël,And so Solomon numbered all the new converts who were in the land of Israel, post dinumerationem quam dinumeravit David pater ejus, after the numbering that David his father had done,et inventi sunt centum quinquaginta millia, and they were found to be one hundred fifty thousandet tria millia sexcenti.and three thousand six hundred.

Fecitque ex eis septuaginta millia qui humeris onera portarent,And he appointed seventy thousand of them,et octoginta millia qui lapides in montibus cæderent:who would carry burdens on shoulders, tria autem milliaand eighty thousand who would hew stones in the mountains,et sexcentos præpositos operum populi.then three thousand and six hundred as overseers of the work of the people.
