Constituerunt autem habitatores Jerusalem Ochoziam filium ejus minimum regem pro eo:Then the inhabitants of Jerusalem appointed his youngest son, Ahaziah, as king in his place.omnes enim majores natu,For the robbers of the Arabians, qui ante eum fuerant, who had fallen upon the camp, interfecerant latrones Arabum qui irruerant in castra:had put to death all those who were greater by birth before him.regnavitque Ochozias filius Joram regis Juda. And so Ahaziah, the son of Jehoram, reigned as king of Judah.
Quadraginta duorum annorum erat Ochozias cum regnare cœpisset,Ahaziah was forty-two years old when he had begun to reign,et uno anno regnavit in Jerusalem:and he reigned for one year in Jerusalem.et nomen matris ejus Athalia filia Amri. And the name of his mother was Athaliah, the daughter of Omri.
Sed et ipse ingressus est per vias domus Achab:But he too went forth in the ways of the house of Ahab.mater enim ejus impulit eum ut impie ageret. For his mother impelled him to act impiously.
Fecit igitur malum in conspectu Domini,And so he did evil in the sight of the Lord, sicut domus Achab:just as the house of Ahab did.ipsi enim fuerunt ei consiliarii post mortem patris sui,For after the death of his father, they were counselors to him,in interitum ejus:to his destruction.
ambulavitque in consiliis eorum. Et perrexit cum Joram filio Achab rege Israël in bellum contra Hazaël regem Syriæ in Ramoth Galaad: vulneraveruntque Syri Joram. And he walked in their counsels. And he went with Joram, the son of Ahab, the king of Israel, to war against Hazael, the king of Syria, at Ramoth Gilead. And the Syrians wounded Joram.
Qui reversus est ut curaretur in Jezrahel: multas enim plagas acceperat in supradicto certamine. Igitur Ochozias filius Joram rex Juda descendit ut inviseret Joram filium Achab in Jezrahel ægrotantem. And he returned, so that he might be cured at Jezreel. For he had received many wounds in the above-stated battle. And so Ahaziah, the son of Jehoram, the king of Judah, descended, so that he might visit Joram, the son of Ahab, at Jezreel, while he was ill.
Voluntatis quippe fuit Dei adversus Ochoziam, ut veniret ad Joram:Indeed, it was the will of God against Ahaziah that he would go to Joram,et cum venisset, and when he had gone,et egrederetur cum eo adversum Jehu filium Namsi, that he also would go out with him against Jehu, the son of Nimshi, quem unxit Dominus ut deleret domum Achab.whom the Lord had anointed to destroy the house of Ahab.
Cum ergo everteret Jehu domum Achab,Therefore, when Jehu was overthrowing the house of Ahab, invenit principes Juda,he found the leaders of Judah,et filios fratrum Ochoziæ,with the sons of the brothers of Ahaziah, qui ministrabant ei,who were ministering to him,et interfecit illos.and he put them to death.
Ipsum quoque perquirens Ochoziam,Also, while he himself was seeking Ahaziah, comprehendit latitantem in Samaria:he found him to be hiding in Samaria.adductumque ad se,And having been led to him, occidit: et sepelierunt eum,he killed him. And they buried him,eo quod esset filius Josaphat, because he was the son of Jehoshaphat, qui quæsierat Dominum in toto corde suo.who had sought the Lord with all his heart.Nec erat ultra spes aliqua ut de stirpe quis regnaret Ochoziæ:But there was no longer any hope that someone from the stock of Ahaziah would reign.
siquidem Athalia mater ejus,For indeed, his mother, videns quod mortuus esset filius suus,Athaliah, seeing that her son had died, surrexit, et interfecit omnem stirpem regiam domus Joram.rose up and killed the entire royal stock of the house of Jehoram.
Porro Josabeth filia regis tulit Joas filium Ochoziæ,But Jehosheba, the daughter of the king, took Joash,et furata est eum de medio filiorum regis, cum interficerentur:the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from the midst the king’s sons when they were being slain.absconditque eum cum nutrice sua in cubiculo lectulorum:And she hid him with his nurse in a bedroom.Josabeth autem,Now Jehosheba,quæ absconderat eum,the one who had hidden him, erat filia regis Joram, was the daughter of king Jehoram, uxor Jojadæ pontificis, soror Ochoziæ:and the wife of the high priest Jehoiada, and the sister of Ahaziah.et idcirco Athalia non interfecit eum.And because of this, Athaliah did not kill him.
Fuit ergo cum eis in domo Dei absconditus sex annis,Therefore, he was with them, hidden in the house of God,quibus regnavit Athalia super terram.for six years, while Athaliah reigned over the land.
