Dormivit autem Josaphat cum patribus suis,Then Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers,et sepultus est cum eis in civitate David:and he was buried with them in the City of David.regnavitque Joram filius ejus pro eo.And his son, Jehoram, reigned in his place.
Qui habuit fratres filios Josaphat,And he had brothers, sons of Jehoshaphat:Azariam,Azariah,et Jahiel, and Jehiel,et Zachariam, and Zechariah,et Azariam, and Azariah,et Michaël,and Michael,et Saphatiam:and Shephatiah.omnes hi filii Josaphat regis Juda. All these were sons of Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah.
Deditque eis pater suus multa munera argentiAnd their father gave to them many gifts of silver,et auri, and gold,et pensitationes, and valuables, cum civitatibus munitissimis in Juda:with very fortified cities in Judah.regnum autem tradidit Joram,But the kingdom he handed on to Jehoram,eo quod esset primogenitus.because he was the firstborn.
Surrexit ergo Joram super regnum patris sui:Therefore, Jehoram rose up over the kingdom of his father.cumque se confirmasset,And when he had established himself, occidit omnes fratres suos gladio,he killed with the sword all his brothers,et quosdam de principibus Israël.and certain ones from the leaders of Israel.
Triginta duorum annorum erat Joram cum regnare cœpisset,Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he had begun to reign.et octo annis regnavit in Jerusalem. And he reigned for eight years in Jerusalem.
Ambulavitque in viis regum Israël,And he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, sicut egerat domus Achab:just as the house of Ahab had done.filia quippe Achab erat uxor ejus:For his wife was a daughter of Ahab,et fecit malum in conspectu Domini.and he did evil in the sight of the Lord.
Noluit autem Dominus disperdere domum David propter pactum quod inierat cum eo:But the Lord was not willing to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had formed with him,et quia promiserat ut daret ei lucernam, and because he had promised that he would provide a lamp to him,et filiis ejus omni tempore.and to his sons, for all time.
In diebus illis rebellavit Edom,In those days, Edom rebelled,ne esset subditus Judæ,so as not to be subject to Judah,et constituit sibi regem.and they appointed for themselves a king.
Cumque transisset Joram cum principibus suis,And when Jehoram had gone across with his leaders,et cuncto equitatu qui erat secum, and all the horsemen who were with him, surrexit nocte,he arose in the night,et percussit Edom, qui se circumdederat, and struck the Edomites (who had surrounded him),et omnes duces equitatus ejus.and all the commanders of his horsemen.
Attamen rebellavit Edom,Even so, Edom rebelled,ne esset sub ditione Juda usque ad hanc diem:so as not to be under the authority of Judah, even to this day.eo tempore et Lobna recessit ne esset sub manu illius. Also at that time, Libnah withdrew, so as not to be under his hand.Dereliquerat enim Dominum Deum patrum suorum:For he had forsaken the Lord, the God of his fathers.
insuperMoreover,et excelsa fabricatus est in urbibus Juda,he also constructed high places in the cities of Judah.et fornicari fecit habitatores Jerusalem,And he caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to fornicate,et prævaricari Judam.and Judah to prevaricate.
Allatæ sunt autem ei litteræ ab Elia propheta,Then letters were conveyed to him from the prophet Elijah,in quibus scriptum erat:in which it was written:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus David patris tui:“Thus says the Lord, the God of David, your father:Quoniam non ambulasti in viis Josaphat patris tui,Because you have not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat, your father,et in viis Asa regis Juda, nor in the ways of Asa, the king of Judah,
sed incessisti per iter regum Israël,but instead you have advanced along the paths of the kings of Israel,et fornicari fecisti Judam et habitatores Jerusalem, and you have caused Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to fornicate, imitatus fornicationem domus Achab, imitating the fornication of the house of Ahab, insuper et fratres tuos, and moreover, domum patris tui,you have killed your brothers, meliores te,the house of your father, occidisti:who are better than you:
ecce Dominus percutiet te plaga magna cum populo tuo, behold, the Lord will strike you with a great plague, with all your people,et filiis, et uxoribus tuis, and your sons and wives, universaque substantia tua.and all your substance.
Tu autem ægrotabis pessimo languore uteri tui,And you shall be sickened by a very grievous disease of your bowels, donec egrediantur vitalia tua paulatim per singulos dies.until your inner organs depart, little by little, each day.”
Suscitavit ergo Dominus contra Joram spiritum Philisthinorum, et Arabum qui confines sunt Æthiopibus:Therefore, the Lord stirred up, against Jehoram, the spirit of the Philistines, and of the Arabians, who are along the borders of the Ethiopians.
et ascenderunt in terram Juda,And they ascended into the land of Judah.et vastaverunt eam,And they laid waste to it.diripueruntque cunctam substantiam quæ inventa est in domo regis,And they despoiled all the substance that was found in the house of the king, insuper et filios ejus, including even his sonset uxores:and wives.nec remansit ei filius,Neither did there remain for him any son, nisi Joachaz, except Jehoahaz, qui minimus natu erat.who was the youngest born.
Et super hæc omnia percussit eum Dominus alvi languore insanabili. And in addition to all these things, the Lord struck him with an incurable disease of the bowels.
Cumque diei succederet dies,And as day followed after day,et temporum spatia volverentur, and the space of time turned, duorum annorum expletus est circulus:the course of two years was completed.et sic longa consumptus tabe,And after having been wasted by a long consumption, ita ut egereret etiam viscera sua,so much so that even his inner organs were discharged, languore pariter, the disease ended along with his life.et vita caruit. And so he died of a very grievous illness.Mortuusque est in infirmitate pessima,And the people did not make a funeral for him,et non fecit ei populus secundum morem combustionis exequias, according to the custom of burning, sicut fecerat majoribus ejus.as they had done for his ancestors.
Triginta duorum annorum fuit cum regnare cœpisset,He was thirty-two years old when he had begun to reign,et octo annis regnavit in Jerusalem.and he reigned for eight years in Jerusalem.Ambulavitque non recte,And he did not walk uprightly.et sepelierunt eum in civitate David,And they buried him in the City of David, verumtamen non in sepulchro regum.yet truly, not in the sepulcher of the kings.
