Septem annorum erat Joas cum regnare cœpisset,Joash was seven years old when he had begun to reign.et quadraginta annis regnavit in Jerusalem:And he reigned for forty years in Jerusalem.nomen matris ejus Sebia de Bersabee. The name of his mother was Zibiah, from Beersheba.
Fecitque quod bonum est coram Domino cunctis diebus Jojadæ sacerdotis. And he did what is good before the Lord during all the days of Jehoiada, the priest.
Accepit autem ei Jojada uxores duas,Now Jehoiada gave to him two wives,e quibus genuit filios et filias.from whom he conceived sons and daughters.
Post quæ placuit Joas ut instauraret domum Domini. After these things, it pleased Joash to repair the house of the Lord.
Congregavitque sacerdotesAnd he gathered together the priests and Levites,et Levitas, and he said to them:et dixit eis:“Go out to the cities of Judah,Egredimini ad civitates Juda, and collect from all of Israel money to repair the surfaces of the temple of your God,et colligite de universo Israël pecuniam ad sartatecta templi Dei vestri per singulos annos, throughout each year.festinatoque hoc facite. And do this promptly.”Porro Levitæ egere negligentius. But the Levites acted negligently.
Vocavitque rex Jojadam principem,And the king summoned Jehoiada, the leader,et dixit ei:and he said to him:Quare tibi non fuit curæ,“Why was there no concern with you, so that you would compel the Levites to bring,ut cogeres Levitas inferre de Juda et de Jerusalem pecuniam quæ constituta est a Moyse servo Domini, from Judah and from Jerusalem, the money that was appointed by Moses, the servant of the Lord,ut inferret eam omnis multitudo Israël in tabernaculum testimonii?so as to bring it, from the entire multitude of Israel, to the tabernacle of the testimony?
Athalia enim impiissima, et filii ejus, destruxerunt domum Dei,For that very impious woman Athaliah and her sons have destroyed the house of God,et de universis quæ sanctificata fuerant in templo Domini, ornaverunt fanum Baalim.and they have adorned the shrine of Baal from all the things that had been sanctified in the temple of the Lord.”
Præcepit ergo rex,Therefore, the king instructed,et fecerunt arcam:and they made an ark.posueruntque eam juxta portam domus Domini forinsecus. And they placed it beside the gate of the house of the Lord, on the outside.
Et prædicatum est in Juda et Jerusalem ut deferrent singuli pretium Domino,And they proclaimed, in Judah and Jerusalem, that each one should bring to the Lord the money that Moses, quod constituit Moyses servus Dei super omnem Israël in deserto.the servant of God, appointed in the desert, concerning all of Israel.
Lætatique sunt cuncti principes,And all the leaders and all the people rejoiced.et omnis populus,And upon entering,et ingressi contulerunt in arcam Domini, atque miserunt ita ut impleretur.they together took and placed so much into the ark of the Lord that it was filled.
Cumque tempus esset ut deferrent arcam coram rege per manus Levitarum (videbant enim multam pecuniam),And when it was time for them to bring the ark before the king by the hands of the Levites, for they saw that there was much money, ingrediebatur scriba regis, the scribe of the king,et quem primus sacerdos constituerat, and the one whom the high priest had appointed, effundebantque pecuniam quæ erat in arca, entered. And they poured out the money that was in the ark.porro arcam reportabant ad locum suum:Then they carried the ark back to its place.sicque faciebant per singulos dies. And they did this on each day.Et congregata est infinita pecunia,And an immense sum of money was gathered.
quam dederunt rex et Jojada his qui præerant operibus domus Domini: at illi conducebant ex ea cæsores lapidum,And the king and Jehoiada gave it to those who were in charge of the works of the house of the Lord. Then with it they hired hewers of stone,et artifices operum singulorum ut instaurarent domum Domini:and artisans of every kind, so that they might repair the house of the Lord, fabros quoque ferri et æris, and also so that the works of iron and of brass,ut quod cadere cœperat, fulciretur.which had begun to fall, would be reinforced.
Egeruntque hi qui operabantur industrie,And those who were hired were working industriously.et obducebatur parietum cicatrix per manus eorum,And the breach in the walls was healed by their hands.ac suscitaverunt domum Domini in statum pristinum,And they returned the house of the Lord to a pristine state.et firmiter eam stare fecerunt. And they caused it stand firm.
Cumque complessent omnia opera,And when they had completed all the works, detulerunt coram rege et Jojada reliquam partem pecuniæ:they brought the remaining part of the money before the king and Jehoiada.de qua facta sunt vasa templi in ministerium,And from it, the vessels of the temple were made,et ad holocausta, phialæ quoque, for the ministry and for the holocausts,et cetera vasa aurea et argentea:including bowls and other vessels of gold and silver.offerebantur holocausta in domo Domini jugiter cunctis diebus Jojadæ.And holocausts were being offered in the house of the Lord continually, during all the days of Jehoiada.
Senuit autem Jojada plenus dierum,But Jehoiada was old and full of days.et mortuus est cum esset centum triginta annorum:And he died when he was one hundred thirty years old.
sepelieruntque eum in civitate David cum regibus,And they buried him in the City of David,eo quod fecisset bonum cum Israël,with the kings,et cum domo ejus.because he had done good to Israel and to his house.
Postquam autem obiit Jojada,Then, ingressi sunt principes Juda, after Jehoiada passed away,et adoraverunt regem:the leaders of Judah entered and reverenced the king.qui delinitus obsequiis eorum,And he was enticed by their obsequiousness, acquievit eis.and so he acquiesced to them.
Et dereliquerunt templum Domini Dei patrum suorum,And they abandoned the temple of the Lord, the God of their fathers, servieruntque lucis et sculptilibus:and they served sacred groves and graven images.et facta est ira contra Judam et Jerusalem propter hoc peccatum. And wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem because of this sin.
Mittebatque eis prophetas ut reverterentur ad Dominum,And he sent prophets to them, so that they might return to the Lord.quos protestantes illi audire nolebant. And though they were offering testimony, they were not willing to listen to them.
Spiritus itaque Dei induit Zachariam filium Jojadæ sacerdotem,And so the Spirit of God clothed Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada the priest.et stetit in conspectu populi,And he stood in the sight of the people,et dixit eis:and he said to them:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:“Thus says the Lord God:Quare transgredimini præceptum Domini,Why have you transgressed the precept of the Lord, quod vobis non proderit, though it was not to your benefit,et dereliquistis Dominum ut derelinqueret vos?and why have you abandoned the Lord, so that he would then abandon you?”
Qui congregati adversus eum,And gathering together against him, miserunt lapides juxta regis imperium in atrio domus Domini.they stoned him, beside the place of the king, in the atrium of the house of the Lord.
Et non est recordatus Joas rex misericordiæ quam fecerat Jojada pater illius secum,And king Joash did not remember the mercy with which Jehoiada, his father, had treated him;sed interfecit filium ejus.instead he put to death his son.Qui cum moreretur, ait:And as he was dying, he said:Videat Dominus, et requirat.“May the Lord see and take account.”
Cumque evolutus esset annus,And when a year had turned, ascendit contra eum exercitus Syriæ:the army of Syria ascended against him.venitque in Judam et Jerusalem,And they went to Judah and Jerusalem.et interfecit cunctos principes populi,And they put to death all the leaders of the people.atque universam prædam miserunt regi in Damascum. And they sent all the spoils to the king of Damascus.
Et certe cum permodicus venisset numerus Syrorum, tradidit Dominus in manibus eorum infinitam multitudinem,And although certainly there had arrived a very small number of Syrians, the Lord delivered into their hands an immense multitude.eo quod dereliquissent Dominum Deum patrum suorum:For they had forsaken the Lord, the God of their fathers.in Joas quoque ignominiosa exercuere judicia. Also, against Joash they executed disgraceful judgments.
Et abeuntes dimiserunt eum in languoribus magnis:And upon departing, they left him greatly debilitated.surrexerunt autem contra eum servi sui in ultionem sanguinis filii Jojadæ sacerdotis,Then his servants rose up against him, in vengeance for the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest.et occiderunt eum in lectulo suo,And they killed him on his bed,et mortuus est:and he died.sepelieruntque eum in civitate David,And they buried him in the City of David, sed non in sepulchris regum.but not in the sepulchers of the kings.
Insidiati vero sunt ei Zabad filius Semaath Ammanitidis,Truly, those who ambushed him were Zabad, the son of an Ammonite woman named Shimeath,et Jozabad filius Semmarith Moabitidis.and Jehozabad, the son of a Moabite woman named Shimrith.
Porro filii ejus,But concerning his sons,ac summa pecuniæ quæ adunata fuerat sub eo,and the sum of money that had been amassed under him,et instauratio domus Dei,and the repairing of the house of God,scripta sunt diligentius in libro regum:these things have been written more diligently in the book of kings.regnavit autem Amasias filius ejus pro eo.Then his son, Amaziah, reigned in his place.
