Viginti quinque annorum erat Amasias cum regnare cœpisset,Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he had begun to reign.et viginti novem annis regnavit in Jerusalem:And he reigned for twenty-nine years in Jerusalem.nomen matris ejus Joadan de Jerusalem. The name of his mother was Jehoaddan, from Jerusalem.
Fecitque bonum in conspectu Domini,And he accomplished good in the sight of the Lord.verumtamen non in corde perfecto.Yet truly, not with a perfect heart.
Cumque roboratum sibi videret imperium,And when he saw himself to be strengthened in his rule, jugulavit servos qui occiderant regem patrem suum,he cut the throats of the servants who had killed his father, the king.
sed filios eorum non interfecit,But he did not put to death their sons, sicut scriptum est in libro legis Moysi, just as it was written in the book of the law of Moses, ubi præcepit Dominus, where the Lord instructed, dicens:saying:Non occidentur patres pro filiis,“The fathers shall not be slain because of the sons, neque filii pro patribus suis, nor the sons because of their fathers.sed unusquisque in suo peccato morietur.Instead, each one shall die for his own sin.”
Congregavit igitur Amasias Judam,And then Amaziah gathered together Judah,et constituit eos per familias, and he organized them by families, tribunosqueand tribunes,et centuriones in universo Judaand centurions,et Benjamin:throughout all of Judah and Benjamin.et recensuit a viginti annis supra,And he numbered them from twenty years old and upward.invenitque trecenta millia juvenum qui egrederentur ad pugnam,And he found three hundred thousand young men,et tenerent hastamwho could go forth to battle,et clypeum:and who could hold spear and shield.
mercede quoque conduxit de Israël centum millia robustorum,Also, he hired for pay from Israel one hundred thousand experienced men, centum talentis argenti.for one hundred talents of silver.
Venit autem homo Dei ad illum,Then a man of God came to him,et ait:and he said:O rex,“O king,ne egrediatur tecum exercitus Israël:let not the army of Israel go forth with you.non est enim Dominus cum Israël,For the Lord is not with Israel,et cunctis filiis Ephraim:nor with all the sons of Ephraim.
quod si putas in robore exercitus bella consistere,But if you think that a war stands by the strength of the army, superari te faciet Deus ab hostibus:God will cause you to be overwhelmed by the enemies.Dei quippe estFor indeed,et adjuvare,it belongs to God to assist,et in fugam convertere.and to put to flight.”
Dixitque Amasias ad hominem Dei:And Amaziah said to the man of God,Quid ergo fiet de centum talentis,“Then what will become of the one hundred talents,quæ dedi militibus Israël?which I gave to the soldiers of Israel?”Et respondit ei homo Dei:And the man of God responded to him,Habet Dominus unde tibi dare possit multo his plura.“The Lord has that from which he is able to give much more than this to you.”
Separavit itaque Amasias exercitum qui venerat ad eum ex Ephraim,And so, Amaziah separated the army, which had come to him from Ephraim,ut reverteretur in locum suum:so that they would return to their place.at illi contra Judam vehementer irati,But having become very angry against Judah, reversi sunt in regionem suam.they returned to their own region.
Porro Amasias confidenter eduxit populum suum,Then Amaziah confidently led forth his people.et abiit in vallem Salinarum,And he went away to the Valley of the Salt Pits, percussitque filios Seir decem millia:and he struck down ten thousand of the sons of Seir.
et alia decem millia virorum ceperunt filii Juda,And the sons of Judah captured another ten thousand of the men.et adduxerunt ad præruptum cujusdam petræ,And they led them to the precipice of a certain rock.præcipitaveruntque eos de summo in præceps:And they threw them from the summit, qui universi crepuerunt.and they were all broken apart.
At ille exercitus quem remiserat Amasias ne secum iret ad prælium,But the army that Amaziah had sent away, so that they would not go with him into battle, diffusus est in civitatibus Juda, spread out among the cities of Judah,a Samaria usque ad Bethoron, from Samaria as far as Beth-horon.et interfectis tribus millibus,And having killed three thousand, diripuit prædam magnam.they took away much plunder.
Amasias vero post cædem Idumæorum,Truly, after the slaughter of the Edomites,et allatos deos filiorum Seir, and when the gods of the sons of Seir were brought, statuit illos in deos sibi,Amaziah chose them as gods for himself.et adorabat eos,And he was adoring them,et illis adolebat incensum.and burning incense to them.
Quam ob rem iratus Dominus contra Amasiam misit ad illum prophetam,For this reason, the Lord became angry against Amaziah, and he sent a prophet to him,qui diceret ei:who would say to him,Cur adorasti deos qui non liberaverunt populum suum de manu tua?“Why have you adored gods who did not free their own people from your hand?”
Cumque hæc ille loqueretur,And after he spoke these things, respondit ei:he responded to him:Num consiliarius regis es?“Are you the counselor of the king?quiesce,Be quiet!ne interficiam te.Otherwise I will put you to death.”Discedensque propheta:And departing,Scio, the prophet said, inquit,“I know that God has decided to kill you, quod cogitaverit Deus occidere te quia fecisti hoc malum, because you have done this evil,et insuper non acquievisti consilio meo.and also because you have not agreed to my counsel.”
Igitur Amasias rex Juda inito pessimo consilio,And so Amaziah, the king of Judah, undertaking a very wicked counsel, misit ad Joas filium Joachaz filii Jehu regem Israël,sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, dicens:the king of Israel,Veni, saying:videamus nos mutuo.“Come, let us see one another.”
At ille remisit nuntios,But he sent back messengers, dicens:saying:Carduus qui est in Libano misit ad cedrum Libani,“The thistle which is in Lebanon sent to the cedar of Lebanon, dicens:saying:Da filiam tuam filio meo uxorem:‘Give your daughter to my son as wife.’et ecce bestiæ quæ erant in silva Libani,And behold, transierunt, the beasts that were in the forest of Lebanon passed through,et conculcaverunt carduum.and they trampled the thistle.
Dixisti:You said,Percussi Edom,‘I struck down Edom.’et idcirco erigitur cor tuum in superbiam:And for this reason, sede in domo tua:your heart is lifted up with pride.cur malum adversum te provocas,Settle in your own house.ut cadasWhy do you provoke evil against yourself,et tu,so that you may fall,et Juda tecum?and then Judah with you?”
Noluit audire Amasias,Amaziah was not willing to listen to him,eo quod Domini esset voluntas ut traderetur in manus hostium propter deos Edom.because it was the will of the Lord that he be delivered into the hands of the enemies, because of the gods of Edom.
Ascendit igitur Joas rex Israël,And so Joash, the king of Israel, ascended,et mutuos sibi præbuere conspectus:and they presented themselves within the sight of one another.Amasias autem rex Juda erat in Bethsames Juda:Now Amaziah, the king of Judah, was in Beth-shemesh of Judah.
corruitque Juda coram Israël,And Judah fell before Israel.et fugit in tabernacula sua.And each one fled to his own tent.
Porro Amasiam regem Juda,Then Joash, the king of Israel, filium Joas filii Joachaz, captured Amaziah, the king of Judah, cepit Joas rex Israël in Bethsames, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh,et adduxit in Jerusalem:and he led him to Jerusalem.destruxitque murum ejus a porta Ephraim usque ad portam anguli quadringentis cubitis. And he destroyed its walls, from the gate of Ephraim as far as the gate of the corner, four hundred cubits.
Omne quoque aurum et argentum,Also, he brought back to Samaria all the gold and silver,et universa vasa quæ repererat in domo Dei,and all the vessels, which he had found in the house of God,et apud Obededom in thesauris etiam domus regiæ, necnon et filios obsidum, and with Obededom in the treasuries of the king’s house, reduxit in Samariam.as well as sons for hostages.
Vixit autem Amasias filius Joas rex Juda,Then Amaziah, the son of Joash, the king of Judah, postquam mortuus est Joas filius Joachaz rex Israël,lived for fifteen years after the death of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, quindecim annis.the king of Israel.
Reliqua autem sermonum Amasiæ priorumNow the rest of the words of Amaziah,et novissimorum scripta sunt in libro regum Judathe first and the last,et Israël.have been written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
Qui postquam recessit a Domino,And after he withdrew from the Lord, tetenderunt ei insidias in Jerusalem.they set up an ambush against him in Jerusalem.Cumque fugisset in Lachis,But since he had fled into Lachish, miserunt, they sentet interfecerunt eum ibi.and killed him in that place.
Reportantesque super equos,And having carried him back upon horses, sepelierunt eum cum patribus suis in civitate David.they buried him with his fathers in the City of David.
