Omnis autem populus Juda filium ejus Oziam,Then all the people of Judah appointed his son, Uzziah, annorum sedecim, who was sixteen years old, constituit regem pro Amasia patre suo.as king in place of his father, Amaziah.

Ipse ædificavit Ailath, et restituit eam ditioni Juda,He built up Eloth, and he restored it to the dominion of Judah.postquam dormivit rex cum patribus suis. After this, the king slept with his fathers.

Sedecim annorum erat Ozias cum regnare cœpisset,Uzziah was sixteen years old when he had begun to reign.et quinquaginta duobus annis regnavit in Jerusalem:And he reigned for fifty-two years in Jerusalem.nomen matris ejus Jechelia de Jerusalem. The name of his mother was Jecoliah, from Jerusalem.

Fecitque quod erat rectum in oculis Domini,And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, juxta omnia quæ fecerat Amasias pater ejus.in accord with all that his father, Amaziah, had done.

Et exquisivit Dominum in diebus Zachariæ intelligentis et videntis Deum:And he sought the Lord, during the days of Zechariah, who understood and saw God.cumque requireret Dominum,And while he was seeking the Lord, direxit eum in omnibus.he directed him in all things.

Denique egressus est, et pugnavit contra Philisthiim,Indeed, he went out and fought against the Philistines.et destruxit murum Geth,And he destroyed the wall of Gath,et murum Jabniæ,and the wall of Jabneh, murumque Azoti:and the wall of Ashdod.ædificavit quoque oppida in Azoto et in Philisthiim. Also, he built towns in Ashdod, and among the Philistines.

Et adjuvit eum Deus contra Philisthiim,And God helped him against the Philistines,et contra Arabes qui habitabant in Gurbaal, and against the Arabians, who were living in Gurbaal,et contra Ammonitas.and against the Ammonites.

Appendebantque Ammonitæ munera Oziæ:And the Ammonites weighed out gifts to Uzziah.et divulgatum est nomen ejus usque ad introitum Ægypti propter crebras victorias. And his name became widely known, even to the entrance of Egypt, because of his frequent victories.

Ædificavitque Ozias turres in Jerusalem super portam anguli,And Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem, above the gate of the corner,et super portam vallis, and above the gate of the valley,et reliquas in eodem muri latere, and others on the same side of the wall, firmavitque eas.and he fortified them.

Exstruxit etiam turres in solitudine,Then he also constructed towers in the wilderness,et effodit cisternas plurimas, and dug many cisterns,eo quod haberet multa pecora tam in campestribus quam in eremi vastitate:because he had much cattle, vineas quoque habuitboth in the plains and in the starkness of the wilderness.et vinitores,Also,in montibushe had vineyards and dressers of vines in the mountains and at Carmel.et in Carmelo:Certainly, erat quippe homo agriculturæ deditus.he was a man devoted to agriculture.

Fuit autem exercitus bellatorum ejus,Now the army of his warriors, qui procedebant ad prælia sub manu Jehiel scribæ,who would go forth to battle, was under the hand of Jeiel, the scribe,Maasiæque doctoris, and Maaseiah, the teacher,et sub manu Hananiæ,and under the hand of Hananiah, qui erat de ducibus regis.who was among the king’s commanders.

Omnisque numerus principum per familias,And the entire number of the leaders, virorum fortium duorum millium sexcentorum.by the families of strong men, was two thousand six hundred.

Et sub eis universus exercitus trecentorum et septem millium quingentorum,And the entire army under them was three hundred and seven thousand five hundred, qui erant apti ad bella, who were fit for war,et pro rege contra adversarios dimicabant.and who fought on behalf of the king against the adversaries.

Præparavit quoque eis Ozias,Also, Uzziah prepared for them,id est, that is,cuncto exercitui, for the entire army, clypeos, shields,et hastas, and spears,et galeas, and helmets,et loricas, and breastplates, arcusque et fundas ad jaciendos lapides.and bows, as well as slings for the casting of stones.

Et fecit in Jerusalem diversi generis machinas,And in Jerusalem, quas in turribus collocavit et in angulis murorum,he made various kinds of machines,ut mitterent sagittas, which he placed in the towers,et saxa grandia:and at the corners of the walls, egressumque est nomen ejus procul,so as to shoot arrows and large stones.eo quod auxiliaretur ei Dominus,And his name went forth to far away places,et corroborasset illum.for the Lord was helping him and had strengthened him.

Sed cum roboratus esset,But when he had become strong, elevatum est cor ejus in interitum suum, his heart was lifted up, even to his own destruction.et neglexit Dominum Deum suum:And he neglected the Lord his God.ingressusque templum Domini,And entering into the temple of the Lord, adolere voluit incensum super altare thymiamatis.he intended to burn incense upon the altar of incense.

Statimque ingressus post eum Azarias sacerdos,And entering immediately after him, Azariah the priest,et cum eo sacerdotes Domini octoginta, and with him eighty priests of the Lord, viri fortissimi, very valiant men,

restiterunt regi, withstood the king, atque dixerunt:and they said:Non est tui officii,“It is not your office,Ozia,Uzziah,ut adoleas incensum Domino,to burn incense to the Lord; rather, sed sacerdotum, hoc est,it is the office of the priests, that is,filiorum Aaron,of the sons of Aaron, qui consecrati sunt ad hujuscemodi ministerium:who have been consecrated for this same ministry.egredere de sanctuario, ne contempseris:Depart from the sanctuary, otherwise you will be in contempt.quia non reputabitur tibi in gloriam hoc a Domino Deo.For this act will not be reputed to you for your glory by the Lord God.”

Iratusque Ozias,And Uzziah, having become angry, tenens in manu thuribulum ut adoleret incensum, while holding in his hand the censer so that he might burn incense, minabatur sacerdotibus.threatened the priests.Statimque orta est lepra in fronte ejus coram sacerdotibus,And immediately a leprosy arose on his forehead, in the sight of the priests,in domo Domini super altare thymiamatis.in the house of the Lord, at the altar of incense.

Cumque respexisset eum Azarias pontifex,And when the high priest Azariah,et omnes reliqui sacerdotes, and all the rest of the priests, had gazed upon him, viderunt lepram in fronte ejus, they saw the leprosy on his forehead,et festinato expulerunt eum.and they hurried to expel him. Then too,Sed et ipse perterritus,he himself, becoming terrified, acceleravit egredi, eo quod sensisset illico plagam Domini.rushed to depart, because immediately he had become aware of the wound of the Lord.

Fuit igitur Ozias rex leprosus usque ad diem mortis suæ,And so, king Uzziah was a leper, even until the day of his death.et habitavit in domo separata plenus lepra,And he lived in a separate house, being full of leprosy,ob quam ejectus fuerat de domo Domini.because of which he had been ejected from the house of the Lord.Porro Joatham filius ejus rexit domum regis,Then Jotham, his son, directed the house of the king,et judicabat populum terræ.and he was judging the people of the land.

Reliqua autem sermonum Oziæ priorum et novissimorum scripsit Isaias filius Amos propheta. But the rest of the words of Uzziah, the first and the last, were written by the prophet Isaiah, the son of Amoz.

Dormivitque Ozias cum patribus suis,And Uzziah slept with his fathers.et sepelierunt eum in agro regalium sepulchrorum,And they buried him in the field of the royal sepulchers,eo quod esset leprosus:because he was a leper.regnavitque Joatham filius ejus pro eo.And Jotham, his son, reigned in his place.
